I couldn’t agree more. This subject in particular only half interested me, but I saw it was a Becca video and figured I’d watch and she killed it as usual.
i love the fact that you acknowledged that the iphone’s images and videos falls apart as soon as you take a closer look. most of the comparisons of these mirrorless cameras and iphones are just people comparing image thumbnails and painting a wrong picture of iphones being better. Also i think being on auto mode on a full frame camera and letting AI do the work is like an auto pilot on a supercar. you spend all that money to drive at below speed limit. but there is always the manual mode to take things in your own hand , which is a must if you get a dedicated camera.
Also the color and shadow rendering is so unreal from smartphones, you can tell when a picture or video comes from an iPhone because of the orange faces or warm profile with no shadows. I mean they are not the only ones guilty of this but usually people don't point on that.
Exactly. The iPhone has a ton of post processing which imo doesn't really look nice. Not saying it is bad by any means but the sony is the way to go for professional use.
i really loved that you mentioned the a7c at the end! i recently purchased it and was slightly tempted by the zv e1 but with hearing that you are still loving the a7c, that's enough for me to wait on the second generation of the zv e1
I don't care about cameras, at all, but I love watching/hearing Becca review them. She's just such a joy, but also super clear and informative. If I do ever get into photography, I feel like I'll be well equipped to make that first major purchase.
Some channels have been showcasing this as a beginner camera for individuals “just getting started” - based on the price, I say just take out your phone.
ZV-E1 is a vlogging camera dude. vloggers don't like to use their smartphone a lot rather they prefer a dedicated video camera. E1 offers better video quality and better autofocus along with your choice of lenses. Only you would take out your phone to record now.
@@KarlSainte dude, you seriously have no idea about cameras and their types. Sony said the ZV-E1 is for vloggers. You don't need an EVF when you're vlogging with the camera. What a great review. I love how different it is to reviews of other cameras, and really leans on the niche the camera sells itself towards. How does it compare to the a7c?
The big benefit of the ZV-E1 is that it has 10-bit 4:2:2 color instead of the A7C's 8-bit 4:2:0, so it holds up much better to color grading and isn't as prone to color banding. Also higher slow mo frame rates at 4k, better rolling shutter, better low light, and a few other processor based improvements (Becca didn't touch on the ZV-E1's lossless digital zoom which is pretty cool). Main pros to the A7c is that it's 300 cheaper, better at avoiding overheating, and i think the body may be metal but not positive
@@volumefactthe A7C also has a larger megapixel count which helps when it comes to strictly photos. I would never buy the ZV-E1 if I did just as many photos as I did videos.

Please do these videos in 60fps in the future. Would be great to see how these cameras compare there. I know many at The Verge are not fans of HFR but they're wrong 😅 Most people are trying to capture a sense of realism, not a film...
As a small creator myself who actually shoots with an iPhone 13 Pro, I really enjoyed the comparison points and the attention to detail. The only problem that I see is that a system like this probably still is way too inaccessible for a starting creator since you not only have to buy the $2000 camera body but also add a lens to it which greatly affects the image that you get out of the camera. And, as we know, those lenses can easily cost you as much or more than the camera body itself. Compared to an $1400 iPhone 14 Pro, even with a gimbal added into the calculation (roughly $200), most starting creators will probably be choosing this "deal" since it's just the smarter move. I would love to have a beautiful bokeh effect but its just not worth adding these extra dollars.
To be fair, you don't need a full frame sensor to get those benefits. There are numerous cameras around the 1000-Dollar price point that can still offer benefits like image stabilization and fast auto-focus. Even with a 18-55 kit lens, you will get vastly superior footage compared to the iPhone. Then you can add some prime lenses later for improved image quality, or another zoom. Also, lenses can theoretically be used for decades, and even bodies often last for 10+ years. Because of that, there is a big used market for camera gear, which will give you even better prices. With 1400 dollars, you could have a decently new body with multiple lenses, and even a gimble if you want.
I’m pretty sure “the smallest full frame camera you can buy right now” would be the Sigma FP or FP-L, with the Sony being the smallest with IBIS. This was a really good review though, the camera seems quite compelling, and it’s nice to see Sony taking on the smartphone market by incorporating more smart features. As far as the app goes: years back people hated Nikon’s SnapBridge app because it was buggy and awful. Now, being able to take a photo with my professional camera and then have it on my phone moments later, automatically and seamlessly, is one of my favorite things about the Nikon mirrorless lineup. Hopefully Sony will put in the work and get everything fixed up, given time.
I believe Becca is one of the best RUclipsr out there reviewing camera / tech stuff. Informative and engaging at the same time. Keep up the good work Becca.

Great review Becca, and loved the creative on this. Fresh angle on the product and you found some facts that others missed. Great to see you up on the screen. Be well and keep the momentum.
ZVE1 is a good camera, but as a vlogging camera, it fails. The primary feature of a vlogging camera is that it should be able to shoot stable videos even without a stabilizer because vlogging is all about shooting videos anytime and anywhere, and you can’t carry a stabilizer with you all the time. However, Sony’s anti-shake function is very poor. ZVE1’s anti-shake function is very unstable when shooting handheld walking videos. Active Stabilization requires large cropping and affects image quality. You must use an external stabilizer every time you shoot. You don’t need to buy Zve1 at all. Other Sony models are similar. Even if you use a stabilizer, ZVE1 IBIS cannot handle micro-shakes well, and you still need to use post-shake reduction when you get home. A 20-minute 4K walking video takes more than 2-3 hours to convert in CATALYST BROWSE (even longer if your computer is not fast enough). As for Zve1’s AI anti-shake and tracking functions, they cause too much damage to image quality. You can feel it even on the small screen of your phone. It’s okay to play with them, but try not to use them in practice.-
Is the Sigma fp not the smaller of the two? Not that it's much smaller, but I think it still wins as smallest full-frame mirrorless. Could be wrong there. Otherwise this thing looks pretty awesome for content creators who need a compact camera that can do it all without additional accessories, which I wouldn't necessarily say about the fp.
I have a very similar ZV E10 and I got a $20 L-bracket that turns it into a great portrait-mode camera. It works great for talking head videos. All the points in this video are correct, but there is one significant omission which is kinda of the main reason many people buy ZV cameras: the ability to swap out the lenses. She should have shown how a couple of different lenses and inexpensive filters can totally change the look of this camera, hugely for the better, and make it do things phones can't even attempt. Like a macro lens or a decent prime portrait with a nice Glimmerglass filter on it - greatly superior to anything a phone can do. Admittedly the mic quality on this camera isn't sensational but that's normal, if you buy a $200 gun mic you can get great idea for a very reasonable price. I have the ZV setup with a gun mic, L Bracket and a cross mount bracket all ready to go in my bag, so I can whip it onto a tripod at a moment's notice.
I forget that I'm watching an "industry pro" just because of the accessible energy Becca brings to her vids - I'm glad she's still on staff many years later!
A high end/mid camera (any good brand) will always beat out a mobile phone camera. That is just facts! And we are not talking about by small margins either, mobilephone cameras/softwares will never beat out a good camera. If someone tells you otherwise...means they are bias or uninformative.
The sigma fp is still smaller, and also full frame. and cheaper... Just not packed with creature comforts. So those may be worth the extra 500 bucks for some people
Great review. Owning an A7C myself. I would say thats definitely a more general purpose camera vs this one which is all video. The 12MP sensor is from the a7sIII which has better low light performance. 12 MP and dual native ISO will definitely make a huge difference in low light. Honestly i think they should not have marketed this as the ZV series. Instead they should focus on making an a7sIII- C, which this sort of is.
Totally agree with recommending the A7C first. I will stay with my A7C untill the price of this one drops below 2k € - its at 2,7k € now here in Germany... Too much for my taste, when already owning an A7C.
As a cheat, you can enable the Focus markers (maybe Frame markers, something like that) for 9:16, then frame up your content to be between the 2 lines. Then the same video can be used for both shorts and long-form videos. Not quite the same, but might work well for some.
The best part about an actual camera is the lenses you can put on it. For example a 16-35 for vlogging. Phones tend to have a crappier smaller sensor for ultrawide and Tele and obviously the front facing lens, having high quality optics of all focal lengths utilising the full sensor is an experience unmatched.
hi Becca, thanks for the review. I'm interesting to get the ZV-E1 as my first full frame vlog camera and would like to know what best lens should I use or what lens did you use during this review. thanks in advance.
Hi, I also have the Sony a7c but I just can't use this camera for vlogging, the image stabilization is not good enough to get smooth shots, do you have any tips? I heard that you can get the giro data from the camera.
FIRST of all let me say, I love Beccas reviews. Gotta be one of the best at it atm Secondly, honestly I would recommend the Sony FX30 before the ZVE1. Here some reasons why (IMO): -Same body as the $4000 FX3 (built like a tank) -1/4inch threads on the sides to mount tripods or handles for vertical shooting -APSC lenses are wayyy cheaper (can still use full frame lenses if needed) -No overheating problems -Exceptional image quality -26 Megapixel photos vs the ZVE1's 12 megapixels -$400 CHEAPER -Has everything from auto modes for beginners to full on manual modes for legit professionals in production settings -Much better screen than the ZVE1 -Can import your own LUTs -Much more custom buttons to choose -Lastly, lets face it...it just looks cooler Yes its has a super35 sensor as opposed to full-frame but so what? Most high end cinema cameras are still super35. You can still get buttery bokeh with the right lenses if thats what you're looking for. Maybe I'm biased because I own an FX3, but the fx30 just gives you so much for the money. If I could go back in time, I would use the $4000 I spent on the fx3 and would've gotten 2 fx30's instead
Look up for Lumix S5 II. Much more capable camera, with phase AF finally, with tons of options for video and photo, and a line-up of affordable f/1.8 primes. Price is bit higher ($2.5k), but you'll have a proper camera for that money. And in May "S5 IIx" will be released, more video-centric type.
Who won for you.. ZV-E1 or iPhone 14 Pro?

I see Becca, you can bet I’m watching and hitting the like button. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great product review! I look forward to using the Sony ZV-E1. I am already in love with how easy it is to use the ZV-1.
Good point on the lack of vertical shooting. This was a big question for me. gonna stick to sony's ZV-F1
Finally a long awaited review from Becca! Well done on this review, very straightforward and attention to detail. Hope to see you here more often! ❤
Totally agree with recommending the A7C first. I will stay with my A7C untill the price of this one drops below 2k € - its at 2,7k € now here in Germany... Too much for my taste, when already owning an A7C.
Thanks 🎉I’ll wait for next gen.
8:35 - you can use a 90degree ball head mount for fixed shots - there might be frames with a 90degree for mobile shots
Phones tend to have a crappier smaller sensor for ultrawide and Tele and obviously the front facing lens, having high quality optics of all focal lengths utilising the full sensor is an experience unmatched.
a7cii coming out soon. probably better for hybrid shooters because it has a view(range)finder.
Great review. Thanks for taking the time. Well done!
Excellent! Just what I was looking for….a comparison with the 14 pro.
hi Becca, thanks for the review. I'm interesting to get the ZV-E1 as my first full frame vlog camera and would like to know what best lens should I use or what lens did you use during this review. thanks in advance.
such a great review Becca! thanks a lot
What about the photography with the 14pro VS the zve1?
Hi, I also have the Sony a7c but I just can't use this camera for vlogging, the image stabilization is not good enough to get smooth shots, do you have any tips? I heard that you can get the giro data from the camera.
Hello, is the FX-30 a better option? Thanks (but I own a A7C already 😂)
Hell of a great review and comparison, thanks!
FIRST of all let me say, I love Beccas reviews. Gotta be one of the best at it atm
Secondly, honestly I would recommend the Sony FX30 before the ZVE1. Here some reasons why (IMO):
-Same body as the $4000 FX3 (built like a tank)
-1/4inch threads on the sides to mount tripods or handles for vertical shooting
-APSC lenses are wayyy cheaper (can still use full frame lenses if needed)
-No overheating problems
-Exceptional image quality
-26 Megapixel photos vs the ZVE1's 12 megapixels
-$400 CHEAPER
-Has everything from auto modes for beginners to full on manual modes for legit professionals in production settings
-Much better screen than the ZVE1
-Can import your own LUTs
-Much more custom buttons to choose
-Lastly, lets face it...it just looks cooler
Yes its has a super35 sensor as opposed to full-frame but so what? Most high end cinema cameras are still super35. You can still get buttery bokeh with the right lenses if thats what you're looking for. Maybe I'm biased because I own an FX3, but the fx30 just gives you so much for the money. If I could go back in time, I would use the $4000 I spent on the fx3 and would've gotten 2 fx30's instead
How's the stabilization on the FX30? I was looking at that camera but I shoot a lot of indoor scenes, so full frame is high up on my list.
Love your reviews Becca! Great info and presentation
If you want two to one, it’s pretty darn easy to create to the one in post from an image that’s 9 to 16.
Ok those touch screen functions CAN be added to things like the A7s3 with a simple software update. Why don't they do that???
What a great review and what a talented videographer!
I wish I could give this video 2 likes - outstanding work as always Becca.
Does it have a manual mode? Or is everything on auto??
