I just found this hack for the A/C smells. Mine is just starting to have a bad smell, south Fla. here. First time ever. Always use it ...year round. How much of that size can, do you use? I have a subcompact 4 cyl. So is it the full can, or half, or what? Is regular old Lysol ok, or is there any certain ones to avoid for certain chemicals in them???
A good way to prevent this problem is to turn off a/c a couple of minutes before you turn off the car and put the heater to warmest setting. That will dry out the vent box and ducts. It will also prevent your windows from fogging up when you turn on the heater in the morning.
Had "the smell" 🤢 in my car (Peugeot 3008 1.6td 2013) so searched RUclips last night and found this video. Went out this morning and bought the equivalent of lysol in the UK which is Dettol spray. Tried it this afternoon (used roughly 1/4 of the can) followed Scotty's instructions to the letter and ... WOW ... the fusty smell has gone!! *update* have been a run out in the car tonight and switch between AC on and AC off quite a few times and "the smell" has completely gone. I didn't bother taking out my cabin filter as some have recommended but it will be changed at its next service anyway.. thank you so much Scotty 👍
you can spray from the inside duct in passenger footwell(switch to recirc), as well. also, after you spray, turn off HVAC completely for 15-20min, that allows the lysol sit and percolate in system, fuming out and accumulating in system, killing the bugs. with this technique you only need to spray a smaller amount, say 15sec, after that turn back on and fully vent it out as needed. Thanks Scotty, u ROCK!!!
Scotty, Thanks a bunch. I've been dealing with "the odor" for about a month now. I bought same brand you suggested, removed the cabin filter and sprayed it into both sides (half a can total). Worked perfectly. I had no idea it would be such an easy fix. Thanks for taking the time to post this video!
Good tip. A local Chevy dealership actually told me to do this once when I asked them about the smell coming from the vents in my truck. One add on tip to this, if you car has a cabin air filter make sure you replace the filter, but also, make sure the cabin air filter is removed when you spray the Lysol through there, other wise it will get saturated with Lysol which isn't good for the filter, and it also can make the Lysol not be as effective at killing the odors in the rest of the system.
Some cars don't have a cover over the cabin-air-filter-housing (like Toyota Aygo). If you then remove the cabinfilter, that means there is a big 'leaking hole' which prevents the air&cleaner to reach the evaporator. So what to do then?
@@happytime1012 I understand you would think that, but on an Aygo it's a mission impossible to reach and cover it with ducttape sturdy enough to withstand the underpressure when AC is on during Lysol cleaning.

@@cooldaddyslick6869 Lysol has to saturate the surface to kill the mold. Doesn’t the cabin air filter defeat the purpose since it’s situated just after the fresh-air intake duct?
@@cooldaddyslick6869 where exactly did you spray in? Where is the fan? I just paid the Toyota dealership $150 for a professional A/C cleaning and the smell came back in just three days. From personal trial and error, having the filter doesn't seem to stop this from working, but it won't be as good of a result if you have it. Having your filter on while doing this won't damage the filter, and the Lysol will only last a little bit before it gets removed. Hence why you want to keep your windows open

I think you should take the cabin filter out because all that lysol will just sit and be blocked by the filter. Take the filter out and the lysol will go straight to the evap. Then lysol the filter afterwards. Be careful when running ac without filter though, as it is usually the last lime of defence from leaves!

Hii Scotty, Can you make a very detailed video on how air flow and how heat and cold exchange (evaporator) inside works.. how operational wise causes mold grow (due to moisture stayed in the heat and cold exchanger)... because i just can't get it.. there are explanation out there.. but not able to convince me.. because too general... how to operate the cold and warm air during summer and winter .. so that the moisture stuck in there be lessen... and give no chances for the mold to grow.. i can't find this kind of info anywhere.. thanks andrew
I was told when ur done driving for the day you can turn your heat full blast with ac on that way the heat will dry out the moisture in the evap. That kinda make sense to me but not 100%. My question is, if the ac is on with high heat and it’s humid out, are u not adding more moisture on the evap? Why not turn off the ac and just heat it up full blast? Unless the hot air doesn’t go through the evap (where the moisture is) if the ac is off? Can someone out there get this one straight? Thnx

Mold and fungus is the problem--just like your home's AC. My '95 Prelude absolutely wreaked of mold (Tampa, FL= 90+% humidity)--here's what I did: I put the AC on recirc and found where the intake was from the passenger compartment (using a few tiny specks of dry paper-it was under the passenger side dash). I put the car on idle with the AC on high/recirc. and placed a quart bowl of pool bleach (10% hypochlorite) on newspaper on the passenger side floor by the intake and closed all the windows and doors. Immediately before I closed the passenger side door I added a third of additional volume to the bowl of Muriatic acid solution (also known as 30% hydrochloric acid), held my breath and closed the door and let it idle for half an hour. The reaction in the bowl released chlorine gas which circulated throughout the AC system and car---and annihilated every living thing within! I held my breath, turned off the car and opened up everything to let it air out for an hour.....and got far away from the car before I breathed in again! (You DON"T want to breath Chlorine gas). Mold gone. Tons of roaches, ants--you name it--dead all over inside the car. You'll need an inside detail/clean up afterward. The car never stunk again.

Bought a good 05' Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo this month based on a lot of your "car buying guide" information. Thanks for all the info you share. It really helps folks like myself out a great deal. Especially when money is as tight as it is for most of us. God bless
This worked really well on my car's AC! Thank you Scotty!
@MrHarjider Yes, just turn the heater on full blast with outside air blowing in. Scotty
I was getting that sour vinegar smell in my Toyota. So I finally used my shopvac to clean up the leaf and tree matter that gets stuck between the air intake and the engine area under the hood. After the vacuum, I cleaned the area with the Lysol and paper towels. Then removed the dirty cabin filter and followed the video instructions. It's been a few days now and all is good.
hi Scotty. Really nice videos with great tips. tried it and it work like a charm. My stinky Range Rover sports now smells ok. Ive been leaving with an alergy I alway develop when my ac is on. Now the alergy is gone while I can now cope with my ac.
Will neva miss ur videos again.
I've actually done this. I used Lysol vanilla scent. I also give the floor and under the seats a good spray. ✌️ Great videos thank you.
I bet he didn't know that in 2020 we would all be wearing masks
Right? When he brought up disinfectant spray I was like dang... don't have that anywhere lol
not me nfw
@itaichatindo3265 Speak for yourself. Not everyone lost their balls in 2020. I bet you got the jab as well
😂😂😂
This guy knows exactly what he is talking about. Thank you buddy
Holy crap this channel is so handy. Thanks for the advice

Woo...this is so useful.
Thank God for you Scotty! I just love you . He has taught me so many DYI car repairs.
Dear Scotty, thank you so much for this valuable information, you have save my Kia Sedona. Best regards, Diego
Did you actually try this solution in your own vehicle? It worked?
@@paulraymond139
I did this on a brand new 2020 loaner from the dealer.
The man who borrowed it before me was a fish cutter.
The car literally smelled like rotting fish.
I had to use 2 entire cans of Neutra air but it definitely worked.
Just finished. This really works well! Didn't take very long for the scent to be tolerable...
Reading this on my break at work, ill be picking up a can of this on my way home. Thanks alot for the helpful video.
I tried this with a few auto specific products and 2 cans of Lysol. No luck. Not complaining, just passing on my situation. Do appreciate the videos.
Ive replaced my A/C filter twice already cuz of the dam smell. Thanks for the advice!
Thanks for the tip Scotty, got rid of the smell. I also noticed no condensation draining under my SUV. Been told its a plugged drain hose, that's why the smell built up in the vents.
I am in Houston too! If I see ya ill be like REV UP YOUR ENGINES!
Scotty Kilmer you're a legend and you know it.
Cheers old timer!
pray it's not something burning inside the vent like the blower motor or resistor assembly. If not, often valve covers leak on the engine and get oil on the exhaust and smolder. Check that out first.
I tried this yesterday. It works. Thank you so much. Too bad Lysol doesn't make a scent Free aerosol I can't find it here in Canada. However it is better then the moldy smell I was getting from my air conditioner.
@ding0925 Just be VERY careful not to pour too much liquid in, as it can short electrical parts out a lot easier than a spray. Scotty Kilmer
One of the greatest tips ever. I just did this.
problem solved. thanks scotty!
Wow! Wow! Wow! So glad I found your video. Worked like a charm no more dog odor from the previous owner
learn while you laugh love your videos Scotty
He is the best :)
Scotty, your a god amongst men! Your more helpful than my high school automotive classes.
I think you should take the cabin filter out because all that lysol will just sit and be blocked by the filter. Take the filter out and the lysol will go straight to the evap. Then lysol the filter afterwards. Be careful when running ac without filter though, as it is usually the last lime of defence from leaves!
A lot of vehicles, like my 1999 Toyota Camry, do not have a cabin filter...but...you give good advice to those with vehicles that do.
Thanks buddy nice idea
That's only if you have the circulator on, at least in my f150.
Was about to ask this, and maybe spray it from the intake were u took the filter out.
my 2012 ford escape came without a filter..so I guess they didn't consider it important.
Man... mechanic videos are usually horrendous!
Thank you for your artistry!
Tried it! It works! Thank you Scotty!
Most owner's manuals say to run the A/C on Recirc (or MAX A/C) as LITTLE as possible for this very reason. I follow this rule and I've never had this problem in any of my vehicles. Great tip for those who refuse to "read directions".
Love this guy! Awesome tips all the time.
I like you way of explaining the problems Scotty… all the best from Libya 🇱🇾
Keep making us look good in Houston, Scotty!
sure
Hii Scotty,
Can you make a very detailed video on how air flow and how heat and cold exchange (evaporator) inside works.. how operational wise causes mold grow (due to moisture stayed in the heat and cold exchanger)... because i just can't get it..
there are explanation out there.. but not able to convince me.. because too general...
how to operate the cold and warm air during summer and winter .. so that the moisture stuck in there be lessen... and give no chances for the mold to grow..
i can't find this kind of info anywhere..
thanks
andrew
This^^
I was told when ur done driving for the day you can turn your heat full blast with ac on that way the heat will dry out the moisture in the evap. Thnx
@@marcohangman5312 same question I have i think after using ac..turn on heat..jus heat full blast
this was so simple, i cant believe it didnt occur to me. so helpful, ive been dealing with stinky feet smell coming from a 2009 nissan tiida( usa's versa) for months now
Cats expression is priceless lmao. “ I didn’t do it “. Love all your vids Scotty, I’ve learned so much! Keep me coming 👍🏼
Just did this to our 2003 Toyota Camry. I used a half can of Lysol Citrus Scent and wow, what a difference! Feels fantastic now. I also replaced the cabin air filter which was beyond filthy. Thanks, Scotty!
No wonder I have been sneezing like hell whenever i turn on my car AC. I need to get this product asap. Provided its available in Singapore LOL.
Lyzol is called Dettol for the rest of the world.
Jello Shot Thanks! I've been wondering how to get Lysol outside the States. I've just searched & the Dettol "Neutra Air" & Lysol "Neutra Air" have almost identical packaging.
"Oust 3 in 1" is another great spray product that actually kills airborne bacteria as well as surface.
Doesn't have to be Lysol. It can be any sanitizing spray.
Does it work?
I had a Mercedes that had a bad order when i turned in the AC. I was so embarrased i didn't want anyone riding with me. I no longer have the Mercedes but i wish i saw this video back then. Very helpful.
yep, the mold blows off by then. Try this method
Thx Scotty. I just did it. Now it smells fresh and clean. Amazing!!!
TV is a dying media. Stay tuned here, I make a new video each week.
you're the patron saint of the mech on a budget, thank you.
It doesn't bother the seats, not like you're spraying the stuff right on the seats.
Oh my god.. why has it taken me so long to find your channel ?! Funny AND informative.
Scotty if I'm ever in Houston and see you, I owe ya a beer! this trick helped get rid of the previous owner smell in my car!
Glad to hear it, thanks!
Glad I remembered this video. Two days ago I noticed my AC was smelling a bit musty.
Love your videos scotty, excellent advice.
A Scotty Kilmer video less than 10 minutes long!
The ENTIRE INDUSTRY IS SHOCKED!
This may work for a temporary (e.g. 20 minute) relief. But it does not last. Tried his method two separate times and unfortunately it did not get rid of the smell in the long run
maybe an air filter problem- or something underneath the seats (likely issue)
@@FrostyDubbz no it was the ac ducts. Did a more thorough cleaning of the inner lines using the proper tools/chemicals, and smell is now gone 🤙
Have u changed the Cabin Filter
@@timothyhellsing Yep
@@OptimusIsHere what did you use, i got the same problem
Thanks, Scotty! Fellow Houstonian here!
Thanks for the reply Scotty, I'm off to Walmart to get a can of that stuff now.
Rebeldoug How was using a can of this in your vent?
Wish i could find some now!!
in malaysia doesn't have lysol product, perhaps dettol spray will useful.. thumbs up scotty :)

Done, and done. Thank you! It smells so much better now. You're a lifesaver.
Does it still work
Thank you!!! I subscribed. You saved my nose and money!!
Here in 2024 they haven’t patched this glitched yet
I love this guy's energy and enthusiasm!!
keep up the good work, Scotty!
you mean evaporator, condenser is in front of the radiator. Yes, they can get mold build up but spraying cleaning will kill it.
I love this guy! He's hilarious and super helpful :D
