- I've tried it all! I can't get the horse barn smell out of my car. So I'm going to try something I learned from the Cadillac dealership. This is the stuff I used. Chemical Guys New Car Smell amzn.to/2W2gqin or if you like new car with a hint of leather scent, try this one amzn.to/3SYUr3M

Excellent. Spraying disinfectant through the windshield air intake, changing the filter and keeping Chemical Guy's New Car Smell on a rag under the seat goes a long long way. Especially with ventilated seats circulating scent.
yea.i jus learned the lysol trick..spray into vent from outside..turn on ac..and spray to get that musty smell out
D Bo!
I have been using the Chemical Guys for a couple years now and I always spray it in the footwell with the AC running. I recently got their leather spray and use that along with the new car and it smells amazing!
I use BOTH as well. those two are the classic combo.
Yes! Their Aloe leather conditioner stuff smells so good!!
Use ozone generator machine. I used couple of times, works very well. Got rid of smell of smoking and pet from previous owners. Reccommend.
One of the main reasons why new cars have that smell is because of the adhesive used in the interiors. One time I bought a tube of contact cement to repair some shoes and it smelled just like a new car.
Did you eat it?
@@vilmfilm you don't eat glue silly, you sniff it 😜
What kind of contact adhesive??
@@Joseph-C I wanted to buy Shoe Goo brand but I was broke at the time so I bought a cheaper contact cement made by Bazic Products.
what brand please?
“Now we know the source of COVID” 🤣
😂
Hey Michael, have you tried spraying lysol disinfectant through the intake near the windshield with the fan blowing? That helps kill a lot of bacteria and I find it leaves a pretty nice almost febreeze smell. I recomend getting orange peel scent or any citrus scent. It last longer and smells pretty good. Be sure to take the cabin filter out before doing the process and give the cabin filter a spray as well. Works great for my ATS that unfortunately sits outside... (P.S. over a month later there is only a hint of lysol spray in the air and the smell currently I would say is just neutral)
Great tips! I was amazed what a difference it made to replace the cabin filter! So far the new car scent is my favorite and the car smells fresh and inviting to get inside. No longer greeted by horse barn :) I suspect much of the horse smell comes from the trunk. My next step is to strip the trunk and clean metal surfaces but also submerge the carpet in the bath tub with laundry detergent (I did that with an older car I owned and it worked perfectly) and let it drip dry in front of a fan. I really appreciate your feedback! There is always more than one way to get it done :)
@@sstressfl I'm a horse person and I prefer the new car smell myself haha. I own a 14' Chevy Cruze.
@@BLYFACTOR 👍😀 Now I enjoy getting into my car even more!
Chemical Guys makes some great products. Their butter wax (iirc) is amazing for waxing.
Just came across this vid and was about to suggest the very same thing..
Trouble is, you become nose blind to the smell of these air fresheners as you get used to them and you can no longer smell it and have to spray it more and more to get the same effect. Ive had air fresheners in my car that i could no longer smell and i thought were completely dead and somebody else gets in the car and immediately comments on the nice smell.
Even if that’s so what I like is that I don’t smell barn smell anymore 👍 I only respray when the horse returns 😀
I use an ozone generator, roll up the windows and let it run for about an hour. If you catch a whiff of it while it's running it smells like chlorine gas, works on every smelly car I buy.
Hi there, Which one and where did you buy?
Where did you buy yours
Chemical guys leather scent is also a good one.
Yes. New cabin filter. Spray Lysol into intake vents with a/c running fresh air, windows open. The Chemical Guys is on my shopping list, but for people on a budget? Toss a couple dryer sheets under the seats 😉
My first vehicle in 1999 was a black 86 Chevy Blazer, and I kept it showroom washed and waxed. I used the Ozium new car smell and it was this exact scent but they changed the formula. Two weeks ago I bought a new used truck and use this and man all the nostalgia of being 16 in a clean ride came flooding back.
That’s awesome 👏 I agree. It’s good stuff 👍
You should try this if you haven't already, try removing your seats at least the front seats then use some cleaners or higher a detailer to clean out under your seats or to clean all of your fabric.
Oh I agree. You really need to dig in deeper if you have a scent you can’t get rid of. I had a car that was so bad (a 79 Aspen Wagon that I built into a sleeper) that smelled like sweaty stink. No amount of cleaning helped. I replaced the carpet and seats. That did it 👍
Michael, Thank you for the info on the "New Car Smell" , i just ordered it.
Thats awsome. I dig it... if you find you need more smell control, try spraying it directly in the area(s_ where you think the smell exists. It actually has the ability to absorb smell quite well. And it can last for a couple of months. Good stuff :)
Baking soda sprinkled on the upholstery, floor mats, floor carpet, anywhere smells permeate - in direct contact overnight the baking soda absorbs odor. Leave it longer if you want to, it shouldn't harm anything. Vacuum it out once you're happy with the duration. I then spray my favorite scent while the car is running, air on recirculate, a 99.9% disinfectant is good too. Eventually changing the filters is one easy way too
Excellent info. I had my car get rained on, left window open. Tried everything to get rid of the mildew smell in my car. Even leaving the doors opened, a number of times. I live in the south. Lots of humidity. One day I went back home to west Texas to visit, for a week or two. Very dry there. The smell disappeared, by the time I returned home. I have had, more than once, taken a doggie bag home from the restaurant. The smell in my car from the spices and the salad dressing was horrendous. Fabreeze worked. I am always stocked up on Fabreeze.
Try using ozone (ozium in a can) and doing multiple treatments.
My grandma was a heavy smoker and smoked in the car constantly. I got the cigarette smell out after about a month of ozone treatments every couple of days. I also ripped apart the dash and cleaned every surface with diluted degreaser and simple green. Never would've known anyone smoked in it, except the cigarette holes in the seats and floor lol
Even after not touching the car for 2 weeks, it didn't smell like cigarettes anymore
Bought some of this stuff years ago and havnt used anything since. A new car doesnt have any scents and most car sprays use scents to make the car smell 'nice'. The chemical guys spray isnt a 'nice' scent. Instead of getting into the car and smelling flowers or fruits this leaves a very sterile and clean smell which gives that new car feel to it.
I like the smell of offgassing VOCs in new cars! But for older cars, the Chem Guys scent smells great and I like that it doesnt smell like flowers & fruits :)
I would use a steamer and hold it in each ac bent for 5 min while it was on circulation or get an ozone machine rental!
Been using this for about 2 years now and i love it
I bought a used mini van some years ago that had been heavily smoked in. I took a large apple cut it in half and sat it in a rear seat cup holder protected by some paper towels. I left it until it started to shrivel then replaced it. Did this about three times over two months and the apples absorbed all the smell.
I had a 1997 Camaro that I smoked in (I smoked for 15 years) and it smelled like an ash tray. I simply cleaned it well and it stopped smoking in it and it smelled like new :) Its rare that I cant get a smell out of a car. Personally I like the new car scent better than apple.
Buy an ozone generator and run it in the car with the windows rolled up for an hour. If you can run the fan with the recirculating setting that will be even better. It will kill all odors.
Been using the "new car smell" for 2 years and my '14 Titan SL does in fact, smell like new inside. But I also have a no eating/drinking(except water)policy in the cab.
Strict, but the trucks gotta last, and smell good 'till 2030, or until EV trucks are more proven and get 500+ kms on a charge
Hey Michael,
Just a tip: leather steering wheels aren't supposed to be shiny; that is many miles of built up oil from hands. I use a magic eraser and it makes it look perfect and matte, again.
Mine was wiped down with leather treatment. Gave it subtle shine. It turns matte again soon. But good tip to clean an older wheel!!
I spray it on the used leather smell tree air fresheners. then just toss it under the seat.
And I highly recommend the chemical guys leather smell if you have leather interior you won’t regret it
I have heard good things :) I added a link to it as well.
Never the same smell new car smell is all the new platica and blues they use at factories. New car scent sprays are totally different smells but they are good
This chemical new car smell has been around since the 1940s :) Like any scent, it depends on personal preference. As for this one, I personally like it a lot.
I prefer to put a plate of baking soda to sit overnight in odor to eliminate the odor
I’ve tried that! As well as dryer sheets. New car smell for the win!
@@sstressfl - Try renting or buying an Ozone Machine. An Ozone Machine will Eliminate the odor.
You need to run an ozone machine. Other than that I guarantee the majority of the smell is in the floormats and carpet, there's tons of particles that are deeply embedded there from farm boots. Clean out the Hvac vents, grab some new floormats and extract the carpet, and run an ozone machine.
I use the same spray, but spray it on the carpets, headlining, boot , just about every fabric, once the initial smell fades it has actually absorbed whatever the original small was, in my case I was trying to get rid of a very strong dog smell. and it worked...
It does work! I was impressed by its ability to neutralize odors... it doesnt just mask it with a scent, it actually helps kill the odor.
Cabin air filter must be changed same time as oil, oil filter, air filter. Try sprinkling baking sofa on car seats and carpets. Let sit for about 30 minutes. Then vacuum.
Did you try cleaning the three pedals with a small screwdriver between the ridges in the rubber? Fine place for horse poop to hide.
I know what you mean!! I used a lot of cleaning solution and a wire brush to clean the pedals 👍
I've had a similar problem with house rentals, the previous tenant had a German shephard. I eventually found the smell was the door mats, but a simple jet wash didn't work, it needed car détergent adding.
Its always a matter of replacing OR effective cleaning. I had an old station wagon that I converted into a sleeper. Smelled horrible. I eventually replaced the stinky bench seat with Jaz racing seats. Helped a lot! The last step was removing the carpet and washing it with laundry detergent in the bath tub. Man that was nasty. But it worked! :)
Could you use your carpet or a small section of the carpet as the rag? Just spray in your foot well, for instance?
Absolutely! I ended up spraying my trunk and floorboards. It lasted longer. And I realized it has an amazing ability to not just mask odors but to neutralize the odors. The instructions say shake well before use and TEST an inconspicuous area before spraying. Its possible it could discolor so test first 👍
4:50 I had a used van smelling like dog. Cleaned it and everything got some febreze original sprayed the seats very well everywhere nice summer day let it dry odor was gone
I’ve done that with a smokers car as well. I specifically like the chemical guys new car smell over any febreeze products including their car scent. All of them make me think of laundry :)
That filter had never been changed. Wow!
When I bought the car, it went into a 2+ year visit to the dealership (warranty work) before I could actually start taking care of such things. Day 1 in my posession, with 17k on the odomoter, it actually had a large mouse next in the airbox! Its been quite the journey.
@@sstressfl wow. It looks great and I bet it smells good.
You can try purggo it has charcoal and bamboo inside to trap the smell and purity the air inside the car.
clean the air intake in the engine bay
it's probably in the rug you can take the seats out and power wash the rug and put new insulation underneath or just buy a new rug
A old school trick is to buy a bar of Irish spring soap and open the box and put it under your seat
Another old trick is to buy a pair of brand new cowboy boots &
put them in the backseat & enjoy that leather fragrance.
!
Mmmmm I like that smell a lot!! Great idea but can be pricey right?! The leather seats in my car still give off a nice scent after I clean them with mequiars leather cleaner but it doesn’t last long 🙁 but new leather smell is one of the best smells 👍
@@sstressfl Let your daughter leave her saddle in the backseat ! ( a good instructor will teach students to clean their tack after each use = " new " leather smell !
Hey Chemical Guys are my go to for everything there stuff are real great
I use their metal polish and matte black conditioner as well 👍 They haven’t let me down 😎👍
@@sstressfl that's great if you don't have the nonsense you should it's cleans everything it's my red-hot I use that thing to clean everything 😁
I would have tried spraying some on the new cabin air filter.
Hey Mike Take your new filter back out and spray it with your new car smell and the reinstall it.
Ive actually done that beofr years ago and it doesnt last very long. Also moisture on any paper filter causes the pores to close up making it less efficient. I find a clean fresh filter without anything on it is the way to go.
Ok I’ll work for Home Depot and we have a spray for home furnace filters
And people love it I just thought the idea would work better n a car.
I know that plastic-y Styrofoam-y smell that gives a new car smell vibe and I like it a lot. Thanks for sharing.
I use the same thing in my car. They also have a leather scented spray that smells really good too
I have heard good things about the leather scent as well :)
Go to home depot, buy a pair of leather gloves... the rawhide leather kind without the shiny finish... toss those under the seats, the smell will last forever... and if the car breaks down, you have a pair of heavy duty leather gloves in the car to check things out without burning yourself and getting your hands dirty.
I could see that smelling pretty good :D The only thing I would add... the new car smell has a an odor neautralizing capability.
Why not spray the carpets with it
Later I did! I sprayed the floor boards and the trunk area. It has an uncanny ability to neutralize odors! It lasted for 2 months in the winter. Then I sprayed again. With summer temps and windows opened it would last 3-4 weeks. Shake well before use! The stuff works great :)
If he would have moved the driver's seat completely forward he would've revealed an air duct...
Now, there he could have spread the (car's new smell) on the carpet beneath the seat just in front of the duct where he would've gotten even better results especially if the product is oil-based...
If it's water-based it won't last long whether it's on the carpet or rag...
Ive been using CG's New Car Smell for years and i spray on my mats each week and it smeels exactky that ....... like a new car 🙂
I dig it too! 👍
Thanks for posting! Will have to try it for my car!
Its my favorite scent for a car! Hope you'll enjoy :)
Ordering Chemical Guys now!!!
Just touched up our minivan with a few squirts. Smells so good. Wife likes it too 👍
I dont understand what exactly you did. Can someone explain?
A follow up on how effective it is over time would be nice
Hey that's a great idea! I have learned new things about it and have new ways of using it.
my cat pissed a tiny bit on the edge of the leather driver's seat several years ago, and despite me removing the seat twice and dousing both the seat and the car interior with multiple products made for cat urine, it still smells whenever the weather gets warmer. It must have gotten between the stitching and into the cushion or something. FML.
That’s horrible… I had that in a closet at an apartment I rented many years ago. No amount of magic cleaning solution would fix it. I’d be tempted to buy a new seat! 💪👍
I rhink you need ozone generator in the car to fully get rid of the old smell. Great video
In this case it was a $9 bottle of good scent vs $60 or more for an og. Happy with the $9 scent!
I use Bounce laundry dryer sheets. I’m a guy so I buy the Sport scent. 80 sheets in a box. Tuck them under the seats door pockets up in windshield visor. When the scent fades replace them. Store them in a plastic bread bag under the kitchen sink. Works just as good as those scented hanging trees.
I have used dryer sheets! They are good at absorbing odors but I didn’t personally like when my car smelled like laundry scent. For me the new car smell makes sense and works well inside my car. The leather scent is good too.
If your car has a musty smell, theres maybe a leak somewhere, I had the exact same thing, turns out it was a leak in my boot
0:30 Run! LMAO!
I wish they made my cabin filter that easy to change in my Volvo. My 06 Honda Ridgeline took five minutes
What kind of Volvo do you have?
@@sstressfl 2012 Volvo xc60
I just watched a video on it…. Yikes way too much work for something that is a constant maintenance item.
I would’ve sprayed the cabin filter with that new car smell.
Ive done that before and I learned moisture is bad for paper filters it causes the pores to deform/close. And also the scent does not last.
I love that company chemical guys. I have the new money freshener
thanks
I cut a bar of Irish spring soap in half , under the seat....
If you like that smell I could see that working well 👍 Perhaps place it on something so it doesn’t seep into the carpet, yes?
All I can smell is a mild new car smell, which is preferred over, you know, horse poop. (c)
As an immigrant to Canada, I keep studying and improving my English - especially proverbs and sayings, which you can learn only from the inside.
So, I'm proudly adding this "... which is preferred over, you know, horse poop. (c)" into my quotation book.
Keep in mind, that it can be used in almost any life situation.
Thank you, good sir!
Lol thank you for the feedback 🙏gave me a smile 😃
Ozone generator works well for wiping out any organic smells.
You should have sprayed some of the CG new car smell on your air filter. You will get a blast of air freshener every time you use your AC/heat.
Others have said the same. Paper filters tend to close up when they get wet. I’ve done it before and it doesn’t last and is not an easy place to reach. Anyway, I prefer this method 👍
Another trick I just recently started implementing is spraying men’s fragrances in the vent and carpet. The oils in them last a lot longer than car air fresheners and they generally smell better! Only downside is they are more expensive!! I use Bentley Intense for men which has a nice leather note!
And good call on the paper filter closing up when it gets wet. I did not think about that. I do not actually saturate the filter. I just give a couple of sprays in the passenger wheel well where the intake vents are.
@@The_007 if you find a scent you like that sounds perfect :) when I sprayed the new car smell in the trunk and on the floorboards last winter I noticed that the new car smell seems to have odor neutralizing capability. It’s good stuff 👍
Thanks ... nice video, ordered a bottle in uk
Appreciate it 🙏
Vinegar dawn soap water one drop of dawn soap in a quart spray bottle with the vinegar table spoon of lemon amoninia bam your car order is gone pay carpet and whip with a micro fiber towel
A few weeks after I made this video, I sprayed a little of this stuff on the area where I thought the mild horse barn smell was coming from.... and ya know what? It's been months and no more smell! It neutralized it! :)
@@sstressfl This formula ( Dawn + vinegar + water , but NO amonia ! ) works for washing skunk spray off of dogs , plus its skin- safe . ( remember to rinse the dog thoroughly )
So basically just shake it, spray it on a piece of microfiber towel, and put that towel behind/under the seat? --- how long will it last?
about 2 weeks, however, I later found if you spray it on the floor boards (or where ever you think its needed, it does an incredible job of neutralizing the odors and lasts for a couple months in the winter (windows closed) and afew weeks in the summer (windows open). Either way, on the towel, or floor boards, it smells great and works well to mask odors.
Now we know the source of COVID Neigh 🐴 teen!! 🤣🤪
i think just cleaning a car periodicaly is enough( not in your case, generaly) we just dont need to use any smells or air refresheners...not good for health
As long as you don't drink it or use it for eye wash it's perfectly safe ;)
Why don't you use an ozon machine. Works great.
The way you do it now, the stinky smell reappears as soon as you remove the rag.
It’s cost to benefit. A cheap ozone is about $50. This is $9 and at the current rate of consumption this bottle should last a few years :)
Ozone machine. Best $60 bucks you can spend on an odor remover. I don’t use air fresheners
I have the chemical guys spray it is awesome !
Great video. I've been looking to buy the spray and after seeing your video I definitely will be!
You wont be disappointed. BTW, I have also discovered that its even more effective if you spray it on the trouble area. It somehow seems to neutralize the smell. Lasts for months. I'm impressed!
@@sstressfl i’ve only had my car 3 weeks. They new car smells gone but I want to make sure it stays smelling good
I just buy a box of baking soda, punch some holes in the box, place it in a small plastic tray and slip it under the driver's seat. May not give a "new car" smell, but it helps to eliminate odours. Just remember to replace the box of baking soda about every 1-2 months. Also make sure you change your fresh air filter regularly. Add a couple drops of deodorizer to the filter . Works for me.

Ozone Machine plus chemical guys leather or new scent
Great video and you have a great presence…..
Thank you Greg 🙏
This is no kidding I had a brother-in-law that smoked constantly, here’s the trick all Buy yourself a big can of coffee open it up and leave it in the truck for six days, six days with the windows rolled up it will take every bit of smell out, trust me on this I’ve used it firsthand.
But then it smells like coffee… not new car 😎
@@sstressfl Better than cow shit
Wouldn’t you just be able to spray that green spray on one of your carpets instead of the rag? Lol
Yes indeed! Works great that way too. In fact I later sprayed my trunk. It’s a great odor neutralizer!
@@sstressfl thank you, I’m definitely spraying my trunk with this as well!
I spray it up under the pedals at the top of the carpet and then on the passenger side same area.
Great video! How is it holding up?
It went two weeks and then I decided to spray it directly on the areas where I thought the smell was coming from. The trunk and the floor boards. That worked for 6 months! 💪 I’m very impressed with this stuff.
You have to clean the evap cooler. Your method is just covering up the smell for a bit.
The smell was coming from the trunk/rear floorboards more than anywhere else. Never smelled it coming from the vents. Plus the car was too new to have the hvac system effected.
dunno why it didnt work for me. i have the same spray and it didnt last long for me.
2 things I learned. If you dont shake well, it doesnt last as long. Also in the summer with my windows wide open it didnt last as long as winter.
So for an update when you put it on the rag and under your seat, how long did the smell last until you had to spray it again?
Lasted about 2 weeks. Which is impressive for a little amount of spray. Then I decided to try it directly on the trunk and rear seat floor boards where the smell seems to originate and it lasted a couple months! Seems to have an odor neutralizing ability. I touch it up when I need to :)
@@sstressfl Might be worth trying a spritz on the cabin air filter?
I would check the trunk and under the spare tire
No spare tire in an ATS but I did tear the trunk apart and scrubbed everything and used the shampooer vac. The scent was def coming from the trunk and floor boards. Later I shook the bottle of new car smell well then sprayed the trunk directly. That worked great and lasted for weeks.
@@sstressfl yeah I work at Carvana so I kind of knew it would possibly be the trunk with a used car, a good last resort for a really bad scent/smoke I think would be an Ozone machine
@@FunGoverner fortunately it wasn't a strong scent so the $9 bottle is the perfect solution, especially because this bottle is going to last forever!
Can you just spray a magic tree air freshener with this to renew its smell?
No it won’t stay. Shake it well and spray it on your floors if you need to… but check an inconspicuous area first to make sure it doesn’t affect the color of your rug.
Should of sprayed that filter thoe😀
I’ve done that. It doesn’t last long and I learned that moisture closes pores on the filter. Not a good solution 👍
Thanks for sharing 👍😀
Appreciate it🙏
Can you get this stuff from auto part stores ?
Walmart has it!
MacGruber!
😂
I was trying to figure out why you edited the audio everytime you said Chemical 'Guys' and I think you called them Chemical Brothers - am I right?
Yes!! Lol 😂
Would it be a good idea to spray it on the filter ?
I’ve done that before but what I’ve found is moisture closes the cells on paper filters and makes it less efficient. Plus it doesn’t last long 🫤
Its been a year, how's the chemical guys new car smell holding out? How often do you need to refresh the rag you sprayed into? Thanks
I refreshed the rag about once every 2 weeks. But then I experimented and misted it directly in my trunk and floorboards. In the winter it lasted 3 months AND it acted as an odor neutralizer. I also learned it needs to be shaken before use (reading instructions) or you'll find it to be less effective. The stuff is awesome, IMO. And for $9 I am a satisfied customer. BTW, I recently traded in my Cadillac on a new truck. The new truck has new car smell! But when it fades, I'll be ready with my 3/4 full bottle of scent! lol
@@sstressfl thank you
Spray some onto the fresh air filter ;-)
I avoid getting paper filters wet. It makes them close and become less efficient.
Spray it on the cabin air fulter
I have done that before and it does not last long. Also, getting a paper air filter wet causes the pores to close and makes it less efficient.
Spray your air filter
wouldn't a less expensive 'air freshener spray' work the same way? And you can pick what scent you prefer..
This was $9 for a giant bottle. I still have 3/4 of it left. I cannot imagine a more economical solution. Plus this specific scent, to me, is perfect. And yes, you can use whatever you want! I was simply sharing my own experience with this specific solution.
Use an ozone generator
It smells nothing like a new car.
Smells like one to me! :)
@@sstressfl I guess people have different sense of smell. It doesn't smell bad, just not what I was expecting.
@@TonyDaTunafish I got a little more adventurous and sprayed it on all of the suspected areas in my car that were causing it to smell like a barn... and I think it cured it! Its been weeks and not a single hint of barn. And the spray smell is very subdued and gentle. It simply smells fresh and clean when I get in the car.
