Excellent build. I'm 70 years old and still learning. I have plenty of time to do this now days and parts of your weathering methods are new to me. Nicely done!
Having worked on Seakings in the past, this build brought back a lot of memories. The tail number of this MKV gave the aircraft the nickname Damien, and is still flying today.
@@machmodels I was only cleaning them after getting stripped out for survey for cracks etc. Did manage a test flight in a MK 3 though. Just such a beautiful aircraft.
I used to work from Bristows at Redhill aerodrome in the early 90s. Loved it when overtime was approved due to towing a Seaking into the hanger for refit and respray. Happy days.
@16:53 The correct term for that is part is Sponson. It's main job is floatation! Keeps the helicopter stabilized on the water. But it is also multipurpose, it houses the landing gear, carries spot/landing lights & navigation lighting (left side red, right side green), antennae mast, sometimes storage compartments, and in other type of aircraft extra fuel. That oblong area by your thumb that looks like a line with stitches going around it, is an emergency "float bag". If you had to ditch in the ocean, you can inflate it (both sides) to help with stability. Once the rotor head shuts down, helicopters are extremely top heavy and will "turn turtle" in no time! There is a great big bag packed inside there, covered with a vinyl tarp like material. The flip of a switch causes both sides to inflate very rapidly, you'd be shocked to see just how big that thing gets. A Nacelle typically is the housing for an engine. But there are always exceptions to every rule. Hope this helps with your aviation terminology. Great subject, and great build. Bravo Zulu
Love this video, very clear narration and some great hints. I'd love for Airfix to produce the RAF version, the Sikorsky S92 and the Augusta Westland AW189 (all same scale) to have a collection of UK SAR helicopters
Thank you very much! I can’t agree with you more, I really want to make another one of these but in the iconic RAF yellow search and rescue markings! Hopefully Airfix will produce some more helis after their success on this one🤙🏻😁
Only just found your channel and I must say, given how you’ve not long started this is really really good. Well done you! Nice pace, worthy tips, cracking standard of modeling, brilliant lighting and sound and superb photography, can’t ask for more really!
Thank you very much! It’s been around about a year on the channel now and my god it’s been a steep learning curve, looking back on earlier videos I cringe a little!!! Comments like yours really do mean a lot and help me to recognise my progress so thank you again!🤙🏻
This is an interesting release to me. I've been a helicopter mech for 30 years, and a modeller for 40 years, so this release surprised me because the Hasegawa SH-3 kit was one of the worst selling helo kits that Hasegawa ever produced, something well known among us older/rotary wing modelers. Thats why Hasegawa never produced any of the UK Sea King variants, but I'm talking 25 years ago. I also can see how the hobby has changed and is expanding for the better.
I think this release caught everyone a little off guard, so far it seems to be selling like crazy! Pretty sure it’s on backorder in most places so maybe it’s a more popular subject because you don’t see them much anymore? Thanks for the comment😁🤙🏻
The 72 RAF seaking was my first model I built as a kid always wanted a bigger scaled one loved the sliding door 😂 still not RAF one yet though that I've seen in 48th
SMS is the go!! apart from some minor brush painting, I'm 100% SMS now...I find if I use SMS+MLT (and post paint wet sand were needed) I don't need a clear before decalling anymore. Love the masking tips. Being in Aus, it maybe a long time before we get this, but I'll build this as you have as soon as I can.
100% this build made me fall in love with the paints!!! I’m still a little skeptical with not using a gloss but maybe I’ll have to try it out for a future build. Thanks for the comment and I’m glad it helped!🤙🏻❤️

Excellent! Very beautiful model, i cant wait until this is available in the states. I plan on building all four versions. Next to each other on the shelf will be impressive , i bet. As for the fogged windows try a light blast of electronics keyboard cleaner, that might clean the dust out. Thanks!
Thank you very much! Once you do that you have got to send me a photo of all of them that would look mega!! Brilliant suggestion I will try that later🤙🏻❤️

Absolutely outstanding. Finally, airfix learned manufacturing scale models.....descent models. Nevertheless the model is a crisp one, this project to airfix will be a failure because of the high price that will have to pay to own one, so only few will have access to it, so don't bother sending this model that will result obnoxiously expensive to places like mexico And Latin America. 😢😢😢😢😢.
Thank you! Very valid point, at similar price points you can get some superb kits so I understand the hesitation to buy such a kit… that being said this is such an enjoyable build I can’t recommend you getting one enough!🤙🏻
Nice looking model I worked on the mk 2 at prestwick 819 NAS the kit market should provide some please there should be a gap between the fuselage and the step where the sponson fits and good job on tying off the main rotors as they have a tendency to sag once hydraulics are shut off
What a wonderful beast, especially if you get the opportunity to stick your head into it and do that next to the double mambas mounted on stands with their gearbox. Loverly model , aircraft and engine. Search YT and find a flying unit in the states.
@@machmodels sorry, I didn’t mean to sound critical, I would not have been as relaxed about it as you were! And it did look like condensation! Amazing work btw. I was born in 72’ in London so these were the toys of the day, besides action man of course. Ours were made extremely badly compared to yours. Globs of glue everywhere, including smeared over windows. And thick paint applied by cheap brushes from those little metal paint pots that were the standard at the time. Shame to think all those many models my mum would have just thrown away at some point. Nice to watch it done properly and to reminisce from my life now in New Zealand. I wish you all the luck with your channel, it’s very professional. I’ll look at some of your other videos and see if there’s anything more in-depth on the glueing process. I my even buy a model for myself and have a crack at doing it properly too!
Haha! No worries bud! Modelling sure has changed a whole load in the last 10 years let alone the last 50 odd! I’ve been told by my Dad at the quality of equipment has probably impacted the quality of model more than anything! If you have any questions about a specific part of the model building process let me know! I’ll be more than happy to hopefully give you a well and truly detailed answer to hopefully get you back into the hobby😁🤙🏻
I purchased an F-14 kit that came with a bunch of aftermarket stuff awhile back, but I am super nervous about starting it. Do you have any tips? Also, awesome build!
Sounds like a project and a half!! The big thing about aftermarket stuff is taking the time to ensure it fits correctly, taking the time for careful clean up and test fitting is vital. Also making sure you have the right tools is another pretty vital aspect, using a medium like ammo mig ultra glue is good for lots of photo etch and then having a filler you’re comfortable with also helps! Hopefully that helps🤙🏻
That helps a lot! Thanks! I will have to let you know how it turns out for sure. Currently building a B25-J using photoetch for the first time. It adds a ton of detail, but also more tedious work lol. I appreciate the help.
You did a GREAT job on that Seaking Luke. Great finish and nice details overall. Too bad the SMS tones for the MSG and the Signal Red are way off as they look too pale and whitish, and almost orange respectively. Anyway, congrats for this great build and thanks for the brilliant video.
Thank you! I think I’ve got to agree with you, I really wanted to have that Signal Red pop a bit more! I do still really like spraying it but maybe I’ll have to try out some of the other tones to see if it’s the same story🤙🏻❤️
Random question. I have an Iwata iwata-medea eclipse hp bs - Its the BS model. I ordered this a long time ago for minis, but having just got into aircraft modelling, will I be ok with with this? I know it has a finer needle.
100% that’ll work just fine! If you are running a smaller needle I’d recommend thinning the paint a little more than usual just to help the flow. Hope that helps!🤙🏻
Great Thanks! I was worried about using it for priming as its meant for more detailed work. Will give it a go and thin a little more! Thanks@@machmodels
Well I think that might be something on the horizon, they do it with a lot of their big releases like the buccaneer. They do the Navy version and then also the RAF version a few months later!! So you might be in luck🤙🏻

@@machmodels You are very welcome!
Model looks great! Too bad Jadlam doesn't do shipping to Ireland at the moment, hopefully they will in the future :D
Thank you! I’m sure in the near future shipping to external countries will become available🤙🏻
very nice. The mold lines on the propellers made me sad though.
Thank you! I noticed that as well, luckily they aren’t too prominent!😁
What a wonderful beast, especially if you get the opportunity to stick your head into it and do that next to the double mambas mounted on stands with their gearbox. Loverly model , aircraft and engine. Search YT and find a flying unit in the states.
Thank you very much for the comment! I’ll go search it up now🤙🏻
Очень красиво 👍
Thank you very much!🤙🏻😁
All that work and then to have the windows F’ed up!😮
Haha I know right! Bit of a pain in the bum, but I did what I could to rectify it🤣🤙🏻
@@machmodels sorry, I didn’t mean to sound critical, I would not have been as relaxed about it as you were!
@@machmodels thanks mate.
I appreciate the help.
what's the brand and type of the gloves you're using when painting ?
I wish I could tell you the exact name of them, but they are just the black sugery gloves from my local hardware store! Sorry!
Your roundel is upside down.😁
Wait really?! What is the correct orientation?!🤣
It is not so important to know everything as to appreciate what we learn.
Very true point! I’m always very grateful for all the comments correcting me!😁
Random question.
Not sure what primer is your go to, but Mr Surfacer would be great as it atomises great and the particle size is really small👍🏻
@@machmodels I have a few Bottles of Vallejo airbrush primer. So it’s pre thinned.
Perfect!!
Shame they didn’t do the famous yellow SAR version as an option. Need a modern Tornado and Red Arrows Hawk next.
Well I think that might be something on the horizon, they do it with a lot of their big releases like the buccaneer. They do the Navy version and then also the RAF version a few months later!! So you might be in luck🤙🏻
I have actually flown in that aircraft who’s name was Damian
Woah! That is very cool, how was it!
@@machmodels Spent 5 years on the squadron so lots of hairy moments lol
Glad the video helped!!!👌🏻
I have to say, the kit looks very lovely, though some of your build steps are just terrible.the exhaust fumes are pretty ugly but you can do it better in the future
The kit is very nice, thank you for stating your lovely opinion about my building. Have you got any photos of exhaust stains you have done on builds, I would love to see them as reference for future projects😁
