The ugliest but most gorgeous plane ever to launch off a carrier!!!! Mental design, iffy wings, but a massively capable machine!! Along with the Buccaneer, a massive favourite of.mine
What an amazing model of Fairey Gannet. Brings back memories of my dad who work in the Fairey factory where the large amount of parts Gannet where made. It was shared between 3 othe factories . I had the pleasure of visiting the factory when I was 11 I'm (68) I think the last one was completed in 1967 Stay safe J.
Thank you very much sir! Wow great to hear about your affiliation to the Gannet, after building this I’m in a mission to see one! Thanks for the comment😁
Up until the early 90's there was a Gannet used as a Gate Guardian at RAF Lossiemouth (formally RNAS Fulmar). Sat alongside this hefty beast was a Buccaneer and a Shackleton . Quite a sight! Great video as always!
I enjoyed your build and you have sold me on the idea of building one. These things take me back to family holidays in Devon and Cornwall when I was young. If we were lucky our holidays coincided with an Open Day at RNAS Culdrose, RAF Chivenor or St Mawgan. Fairey Gannets were regular visitors to these events. I enjoyed seeing them fly. I always thought of them as being safe, solid and dependable aircraft. Yes, they do look a bit chunky but some of us do prefer a bit of wood on the tree and something quieter. Three bits of trivia: 1. Sorry to be a spotter but the Fairey Gannet had two engines, each driving its own co-axially mounted propeller. So not really a contra-rotating propellor. 2. They were not invasion stripes but recognition stripes applied to aircraft operating in the 1956 Suez crisis. 3. The RN were hell bent on getting rid of nasty, dangerous, explosive aviation spirit (petrol) from their carriers. So jet engines and gas turbines using relatively safe kerosene were the future but…. these things were started with a gas generator burning, of all things, Avpin. This is a highly volatile liquid mono-fuel or in other words an explosive. Therefore armourers had to look after its storage and dispensing.
Thank you! Glad to hear you’ll have one of these bad boys in your stash. Great to hear about your affiliation to the Gannet, made me rather jealous I must say! Thank you very much for the information, next time I make one of these I’ll reference this comment😁🤙🏻
What a beautiful build! And a wonderful aircraft. I can remember them when I was a young lad when the Australian Fleet Air Arm had them. And I've subscribed.
Nice job, Luke! You always build clean, solid models (philosophically speaking, not literally). You’re such a good example & I always feel encouraged to go & tackle my current model challenge. Thank you!
That is a really nice model, thank you for sharing it with us. I'm glad you built it "out of the box" because it lets us numpties know what can be done if we (mainly me) makes it properly. I haven't made an Airfix kit for over 50 years, they seem to have progressed somewhat, building jigs? Well, well, well.
Great video! Just got the kit and as a newbie builder wanted to watch and follow an established modeler. I now realise I don't have a hope in hell of replicating your superb work, but it was a joy to watch so many thanks for that.
You strike a really good balance between moderate weathering and a clean, crisp finish. I have to admit, I have my head in my hands watching some other modelling channels when they're going too far with it.
Thank you! I am still trying to find a style that I like to work with but I agree, sometimes it’s a little bit overkill. There are past videos on the channel where I have fallen victim to overdoing it!🤣
"It was at this point of the build where I started to notice how *bloody fat* the Gannet is!" This had me rolling. Absolutely love your builds, found your channel recently and have it's been absolute perfect bedtime watching.
Insane build. Really love your videos. I’m getting back into my airfix after a few years out. Need to invest in an airbrush now as I want to notch up my abilities and dive much deeper into the more realistic finishes you can get with them. Many thanks for the upload 👍
Thank you very much sir! Very kind! Definitely, the airbrush is definitely a piece of kit that can transform your models. What airbrush do you have in mind?🤙🏻
Some of the bulkier aircraft really do look better in a bigger scale. The recent buccaneer is a similar example . The first time I saw a gannet live, I could not believe how deep the fuselage was. This scale really does it justice. You have to love ship borne craft for their sheer toughness!
We've got a Gannet at our local museum (with the wings folded too!). It absolutely dominates the hangar. They are huge aircraft in person. Bigger than every other aircraft in the museum aside from a Shackleton and 737 fuselage (Tornado's, Jaguar, Harrier, Phantom and others). Absolute beasts.
Gorgeous build! Learned a lot from your video, really well done! I like a lot of your personal choices for many of the details, and the very diluted paint with many applications comes off beautifully. Subbed and liked looking for ward to your other video's!
Thank you! Haha yes it was paint full not to make use of the wing fold system… luckily as I bought two I’m sure I’ll do another one but utilising the wing fold this time😁
Nice job! If my Gannet looks half as good as yours I'll be very happy. I've still got a long way to go, my next step is assembling the interior once I've done some drybrushing on it so you can actually see some of the detail!
Hi Luke, very nicely done & well done for being the first to release the build video. I will get myself one once the hype has calmed down & price has dropped or a man in a red suit drops one off 😅😊
G'day Luke, I'm down here in Tasmania and, finally, I found the new Gannet kit at a price I could afford. I'm so glad I persisted till I found one. While I've been waiting; I've watched this great video on your build. I'm ex-RAAF but, like you seem to be; I'm fascinated by WW2 and post war military aircraft. I've done a lot of research on the Gannets flown by our Navy back when we had a carrier in the 60s. For this reason, I'll be subscribing. They are so beautifully ugly; talk about function over form; the Gannet is all function! 😉 I haven't done a really new Airfix kit in a long time. I cooled on them when they were making really flimsy plastic moulds out of India. Now, they have gone back to making their kits easy on modellers. With such a complex structure, like the Gannet, those placement 'guides' ensure the base angles are correct because if they weren't the rest of the fuselage would be a nightmare to square up. The RAN livery will be different to yours, however, you've done a fantastic job with the light weathering that seems to be a hallmark of this aircraft. Most carrier-based aircraft, including the Gannet, were regularly washed down to lessen the effects of saltwater so they always looked sharp. Your addition of 'sand dust' was a clever move given your Gannet's posting. These are in my Top 20 'light' fighter/bombers. For their time they were a devastating, versatile weapons platform. So, thanks again, Luke. This video will be a great help to me when my Gannet 'touches down'. Cheers, Bill H.
@machmodels please don't think I'm patronising when I say this, but as a seasoned modeller of some 40+ years, I'm very impressed with the results your getting after only 2 years at it. Chapeau!🫡 On average, how long does it take you to complete?
Hi Luke, that was a great build of a 'strange' looking aircraft, you should be congratulated on a job well, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia
Chap at work his brother was radar tech in the navy on carriers. He said his brother witnessed a Gannet wing fold on launch. Crew rescued. Few weeks later same again. Crew lost. His brother would fly on board Gannets to fault check avionics..
Great Job. I have a real fondness for the Gannet ever since I was a kid and saw her displayed at a Navy day in Portsmouth, UK. Some say she is an ugly aircraft but I say she is unique and significant.
Thank you very much! Before I made this model I was a little on the fence about how it looks, but now I am an affirmed Gannet lover! Now just need to go and find one in real life! Thanks for the comment😁🤙🏻
About 1992 I was with REME and attached to an British Army unit who were covering a rather special air base and beside where I was working was a Fairy Gannet parked up on the grass. Talking to the Squadron Leader who was my boss he told me he actually flew it on it's last flight to this base before it was grounded and a lot of parts removed. Interesting to hear some of the aircraft The Gannet is certainly very distinctive and easily recognisable with it's two propellers.. I agree she is a very chunky bird but there is an elegance in her ugliness.
Great build, and newly subbed! Re the nose weight box, there is a part, A5, not mentioned in the instructions. This would appear to be another "weight box" that fits under the cockpit forward of the weapons bay bulkhead, A9. It doesn't appear to exceed the weight position limit shown in an inset in step 23.
Thank you very much! Hope you enjoy the content. Well how about that, shame that the instructions didn’t point it out but for next gannet build it’ll make it a hell of a lot easier! Thanks for the comment😁
What a nice build and video👍👍 I’m just back to the hobby and can build and decal but the painting is my challenge!!!!😢😢 keep up the work it’s soooo good. Regards from north of Scotland
I’m the kind of modeler whose interest in accuracy amounts to exactly zilch, as long as it looks awesome. Let me tell you my life is significantly less stressful. I’ll happily paint an American cockpit soviet turquoise if I so decide, enjoying every bit of anger my actions induce to the 1000% accuracy crowd.
nice quick build - looks great - still a pain re seat belts... hey-ho.... also love the weathering of the black (doogs models call this 'stage paint' - so while not 'accurate' makes for a better model....
Thank you mate! Yup, seatbelts I think are always going to be this issue that manufacturers have... but as you say 'hey-ho'! Glad you like the weathering, really simple yet effective way to break up that dull black!
Pahahaha oh my goodness I’ve only just released that, that has cracked me up!! My excuse will be I was recording the voiceover at 2am last night! Thanks for the comment🤣🤣😁
Nice job on your Gannet. It's an airframe I've always been fond of for some reason. Airfix look to have done a great job of their offering. I'm hoping for an AEW version before I pull the trigger but it is very tempting
Love The Gannet, used to watch them at White Waltham from the Fairy works. I’m a bit disappointed there isn’t a wings folded option with a kit this size.
I’m very jealous! There sure is a wings folded option, I just chose not to use is as I wanted to show off the sheer size of the wings! Airfix captured the Bi-Fold mechanism incredibly well, so well that it made me get another one so that I can display one with wings folded🤣
I used to watch them taking off from White Waltham as well. My grandfather was NAAFI manager there and had a cottage nearby that ? came with the job. We could sit in his garden and see them taking off.
Heya! Fab Plane, Fab Build! Where do you get the lines from? Did you use sprue and stretch it over a candle flame or can you buy it especially? Very Best.
Thank you very much dude! So the rigging that I use is ammo fine rigging, super cool material it’s super stretchy and super durable. I would highly recommend giving it a go!🤙🏻
Thank you, hope you enjoy the content! So if I can I will use glues like superglue which don’t have to melt the surrounding plastic to bond parts, Ammo mig ultra glue works well too!😁
Fantastic dude!! Iv had the same things you have mentioned but no great issue n some basic modeling will fix!! I noticed when messing with my nose weight they did include a tray for the front weight but no mention in the instructions for it!
Very nice build and finish. I am confused as to what you used for the Extra Dark Sea Gray-you mention that it’s too blue. What paint did you use on the Gannet? Thank you again.
Hi Mach Models I am thinking about getting this kit I was wondering when doing this model did you have any fitting problems and such as what white do you use since I am having trouble on trying to find a good white to aurbrush and brush paint
Hi dude! I would say that this kit is for a modeller who has made quite a few kits, that’s purely because it has a hell of a lot of parts which all need to be put into place perfectly to ensure a good fit. If you can get all the parts in correctly the kit will go together with no issues at all, the one area I had a little bit of problem would be nose area but that was sorted out just using some white putty! In regard to a white, I love to use the SMS white. Super good coverage and lovely finish. I hope that helps!
The ugliest but most gorgeous plane ever to launch off a carrier!!!! Mental design, iffy wings, but a massively capable machine!! Along with the Buccaneer, a massive favourite of.mine
I couldn’t agree more! Thanks for the comment😁🤙🏻

The actual plane is a Beast. Posts on the aircraft are worth a look.
Whilst building this I was searching all over the internet for photos of the Gannet. It’s just so weirdly menacing🤣

Very funky indeed! Thank you very much sir, appreciate it😁🤙🏻

Looks amazing
thank you very much sir!
Was tempted to buy this kit at the model shop but saving money for the me410 and gloster meteor.
Oooo a very tough choice, but I’d grab one of these as well😉
I would highly recommend giving it a go!🤙🏻
Just found ur channel. Great, much respect. But how do u glue painted parts without destroying paint?
Thank you, hope you enjoy the content! So if I can I will use glues like superglue which don’t have to melt the surrounding plastic to bond parts, Ammo mig ultra glue works well too!😁
Couldn't you have filled the front of the torpedoes with ballast? Nice build!!!!
I was thinking that, but was worried about the CG. Thank you!😁
Fantastic dude!! Iv had the same things you have mentioned but no great issue n some basic modeling will fix!! I noticed when messing with my nose weight they did include a tray for the front weight but no mention in the instructions for it!
Thank you mate! Brilliant, I have another one of these to do so for next time I’ll make sure to make use of that part😁✌🏼
@@machmodels like I said it's not in the instructions but it's next to the one that is lol
Excellent build! Can you please share the brand name of your riveting wheel? I’ve never seen those before. Thank you!
Thank you! Yes of course, I use a brand called SBS Model. Hope this helps!😁
Otimos detalhes ,excelente hoby, valorizacao de cada item de pintura
Thank you bud!🤙🏻
Really great stuff! Your video quality is superb. May I ask what camera you're using?
Thank you very much! Surprisingly enough all of the content is filmed on my phone, which is an iPhone 12 Pro😁
Beautiful build though👍
Thank you sir! Really appreciate it😁🤙🏻
