- Sorry its been a while but the house move went pear shaped big time. Who in their right mind would sell a house these days, but there may be light at the end of the tunnel, hopefully!
So this build has been plodding along for many weeks and it may show. I'm not one for spending months on a build because I loose interest so easily.
Thanks to the people who have stuck and believed in the channel I thank you all 👍😎
The 1/76 scale cars come from the Oxford Automobile Company.
You really do take kit building to another level and you're entertaining to listen to while you're at it. Brilliant.
I think you did a great job of building and updating the original kit, despite all life's interruptions.
It’s a really amazing aeroplane and that last scene with ramp cars and people is museum quality. Loved every second of this build especially the moulding and rebuilding to allow the doors to be opened, brilliant job.
An incredible amount of work done to get the kit looking right. Your patience is rewarded with an amazing end result.
Your patience, attention to detail and pursuit of accuracy never cease to amaze me. For us viewers it makes for a fascinating watch and I hope you're pleased with the superb end result in spite of the many frustrations encountered in getting there!
In a corny B&W British film "A Weekend With Lulu" (it's on RUclips) a Silver City Superfreighter features in the last few minutes.
Will check it out👍
I remember watching these as they flew low over my Uncle's house in Southend, taking off for Europe. Also used to see the later four engined Carvairs rumble over too.
@@GilbertdeClare0704 I saw them too, from the other side of the estuary😀.
@@Robutube1 They were impressive, weren't they ? As a kid they always seemed to me to lumber along, yet they were quite awesome as they flew right over the rooftops as we all had evening tea😂😂
@@GregsModelsamazing result ...im not going to lie...i wouldnt have the paitence (or skill level) for it.
A beautiful build of a kit I'm sure any of us attempted in our youth but I'm equally sure none of us managed to build anything as impressive as your build - Brilliant
I truly love how you bring up ancient Airfix kits to display standards using scratch building techniques.
Excellent. I made one as boy. Got an unmade one (boxed) in my spare room. Brought back happy memories. I remember playing in G-ANVR in 1965 when it went to the dump at Southend airport awaiting scrapping. Me and my mates climbed out of the escape hatch on the roof and we used to sit on the wing watching the take offs and landings of the Carvairs and Viscounts. G-ANWK and others were lined up. Needless to say we helped ourselves to many of the old dials etc for souvenirs. "DO NOT JAR - HANDLE LIKE EGGS". Still got a few bits. Thanks, cheered me up.😊
That must have been a great visit. The aircraft was leased by Air Charter in Mar 1955 for operations on the airline’s new cross-Channel Southend-Calais car ferry service - ground-breaking at the time!
Watching this build took me straight back to around 1959-1960 when I was a young teenage Airfix fan. Back then their kits ranged from two shillings (10p in new money) to 17 shillings and six pence (87.5p in new money). I think the Bristol Freighter was around 15 shillings (75p in new money). Yes they were a bit on the crude side but in the range of most schoolboys pocket money. Over the years they have come a long way and I'm astounded at the detail in todays kits. Of course the current prices reflect this. As a final note I loved watching your build of what wasn't considered a popular model.
Yes. I paid two shillings for HMS Cossack in one of those clear plastic bags. Tattersalls in Clitheroe.
Fearless. You continue to prove there is no such thing as a bad kit. Awesome work.
I built this for a good friend a few years ago. A river nightmare but sanded and smoothed it out. Used aftermarket decals which went down well. I kept photos of the model, since it turned out very nice. Good to see this video. Brings back good memories
Excellent build ,remember this being one of my favourite kits but can’t remember it being so rough, love the build 👌
Fantastic build Greg! Show's in no uncertain terms what can be done with these old classics. This is my kind of modelling too. I love nothing more than taking old kits, often subjects that are not available elsewhere, and correcting and adding all the missing details. I could build more state of the art models, but stuff like this is what I enjoy the most. Makes me wish Airfix had released a Carvair to go along with the Superfreighter.
Yes that would have been a big kit👍
I had this kit three times in my life (I'm 59), in the 1970s and 1980s. The plastic was nice and thick on this kit, when it was made at this time. Another nice thick plastic kit, made at the same time, was the Short Sunderland lll. I haven't bought Airfix kits for over thirty years, the plastic is too thin, almost translucent.
I flew in one in 1960 from Hurn airport to Cherbourg. I have no memory of the flight only the journey to Hurn, waiting at Hurn, being called for the flight, and landing at Cherbourg and going through customs. I do remember wanting to build a model of one when Airfix or another company made a model of one.
Cor, Greg, that was some build! I'm very impressed!
Thanks👍😎
The patience of a saint, the skills of a brain surgeon ! BRAVO sir, BRAVO !
You got a jewel from a crude stone. I am trying to do so with an Airfix Catalina issued in 1964,so your tips are very useful, thanks for sharing
Breathtaking. From a lame duck kit to a brilliantly detailed and painted one. Well done.
I remember seeing a film about the Bristol Freighter as a kid. I had to look it up "The Man in the Sky" 1957 staring Jack Hawkins. I seem to remember it being an Ok film for the time. I really like your build and especially the British United colours. I remember flying to Jersey in a BUA BAC 111. I would have probably flown over your house.
I lived inside the wreck of an old Superfreighter for two years during my youth. Consequently I knew every inch of the fuselage very well. What you have done here is commendable! Though I wonder at your infinite powers of patience! Well done and good luck.
What? Literally? Or you just played in one?
I lived inside it.@@chrismartin3197
Absolutely fantastic work. Very well done and the video was enjoyable to watch.
Brilliant build, I love how you are able to take obscure subjects and make them into fantastic show pieces. Keep up the great videos, they’re all very interesting and instructive.
You've just described what makes Greg stand out among others. He is so underrated Imo.
Glorious build, and my big sister remembers flying from Lyde in 1955 with mum and dad and a motorbike and sidecar on a freightliner, and having to have a medical before being allowed to fly!
Quite remarkable…there’s modelling and then there’s Greg’s modelling!
Used to watch these fly over our home in Southend on Sea
Great build. I made one in the mid sixties. Then I built another about 1995 or 1996 when it was re-released. I painted it mainly using Halfords spray cans. I did the white cockpit framing using thin strips of white electrical insulating tape . The whole model including the canopy was then brushed with Johnson's Kleer. I still have the model in mint condition.
Absolutely brilliant Mate. Takes me back to being a kid all over again seeing these old Airfix kits. Good on ya👍.
at least they were cheap in those days ............!
That's quite something, thanks for sharing with us.
Literally made a silk purse from a sows ear. I'm not surprised you had to take a few days off! Fantastic build Greg 👍
Now go buy a Tamiya tank and take it easy on yourself 😀.
😂😂
Superb build and wonderful attention to detail.
There is a Bristol freighter in Omaka (Sth Island) in New Zealand. Videos on You Tube, very nice sir, great that you didn't park it up forever!
Wow! What a tremendous build! ( as always). Your work is really inspirational to me and you make me aspire to be as good as you one day. Thankyou for making the effort to share the video. Take care and be well.
Thank you😎
I am really looking forward to seeing this build. Greg, you are correct. Much as I wanted this kit when I was 10 years old, I could not find it anywhere. I do not doubt that you will turn an old moulding into a beautiful piece of work.
Excellent job on the Super Freighter. Displaying it off loading some cars makes for a intriguing scene. Great eye for adding needed details. Keep up the super work.
Bill
My current project is in full swing as a result of the inspriation I receive from your builds and videos. Thank you Greg! Truly amazing! Be well.
Anytime👍
The legend is back!! Awesome as always Greg. Glad you’re back!
Hope you're well👍
I’m one of the exceptions mate. Built this as a lad and I remember it being an impressive size…..a bit like Mars Bars.
Hand painted it with original Airfix enamels from bottles.
Halcyon days!!
Great job on this one Greg!
Sorry - great doesn’t do it justice!!
I hope Airfix can see what can be done with this kit. It’s a remarkable transformation!
I'm keen to do a video on painting a model by brush using Humbrol enamel paints. Just to show the technique used before my airbrush came on the scene.
You must have the patience of several saints to see that through to the end, but what a lovely result. Bravo!
Stunning, looks great. Well Done.
Superb job, Greg. So close with that wave! 😂
😂
An amazing job. Superb result and some good tips too like copying the decals to make masks. Well worth all the effort.
Another super build. Funnily enough, my favourite stage of model building is sorting out the problems at the start, the construction phase, more than painting or detailing after. Particularly in very old kits (airfix and matchbox) that I love creating new or revised parts. Anyway, great work.
Some 63 years ago (aged 10) I took my 2nd and 3rd air experience flights in the Bristol freighter, flying from Southend (Rochford) to Oostend on day trip to Belgium with my parents. The outward flight was in, I believe, a British Air Ferries craft and was noisy, smelly and uncomfortable. The return journey was in a Sabena Airlines version which was not quite as noisy or smelly but was made extremely uncomfortable when we encountered a thunderstorm on the way back! In the dark!
My mum vowed never to fly again but in later life relented for a family holiday to Croatia.
I, naturally being an adventurous lad, loved every second of it, including the storm!
Nice work Greg, turned out great.
Great build! I don't ever remember seeing this in the model shop in Yeovil in the late 60's or early 70's... perhaps it was alway sold out 😄
I did two trips (1968) in the Bristol Type 170 Freighter Mk.31, of SAFE, New Zealand.
Your presentation is just right. And in this case only, the old yokes are not the best ones!
You have turned a nation once proud of their boyhood modelling skills into one which now realise we were a nation of bodgers!
Really impressive 👍. Truly.
Fantastic result! Just goes to show it's the modeller not the model. These videos that show the older Airfix kits built to their true potential are wonderful.
So true👍
You’re onto a winner with that one mate!
Very nice job on an old airfix kit.
Amazing work my friend.
I had this kit back in the 60's, love seeing what you could really do with it.
Just staggering what you are prepared to work on. Thanks for the videos. I imagine you must have a huge level of nostalgia to even contemplate these builds. Amazing.
You bet!
I've seen this kit many times over the years at swap meets, hobby shops, conventions and whatnot; however, I've never seen anyone build it. Bravo to you for taking on that monumental task. It was also frustrating for me to watch, but in the end she turned out quite nice. Than you for sharing this unique build. Cheers!
My dad has a neat pick of one of these landing in Canada's far north. Thanks for the reminder.
Very, very nice! A really unusual subject expertly updated🙂
I remember the 60ies when British Air Ferries Superfreighters landed her in Ostend (Belgium) on a daily basis. We called them fatheads. I recall the model, too - assisted my father with the sanding and painting. Nice job!
I'm always amazed with how much details and techniques you use. 👍👏👏
By the power of Greyskull! That was a project! I commend both your skills and your patience.
😂😂
Fantastic end result, good effort
Masterly, hugely enjoyable build. The casting and vacuum forming was instructive and shows what can be achieved with a little care.I did build this kit first time round, with Dad, and was hugely excited to see it in the "Goldfinger"movie. Many thanks.
Superb, Greg , as always.
There's the easy way and then there's Greg's way.. End result is always amazing. Love watching your builds Sir
It's good to have you back. Summer seemed like it would never end with you gone and dealing with real issues.
I appreciate the humor and the fact you cram a ton of work into 30 minutes. Also appreciated is how you take on some crazy subjects. Much more interesting than the usual Tamiya stuff.
I have built this model when they could be purchased from Woolworths. I have a memory of it being pretty terrible. So well done for producing such a fantastic result.
One took me to France; with my car of course.
A treat my kids will never know!
The fare for me was more than for the car!
No Q's,. No baggage search.
Just a salute from the gendarme and I headed South.
I took the wrong road and and instead of due south, slept on the beach near where the nuke stations are now! St. Vaaste-
Best holiday I ever had!
Hurn/Maupertus.
This is what I like best about your builds, the amount of work and attention to detail in taking old kits and bringing them up to modern looking marvels!
Wow, Greg.
What a beautiful model you made of it.
The man with the golden hands...!!
😂😂
Great to see you back, Greg. Been a funny old summer. Loved this one
This is without question one of my favorite builds. I’ve watched numerous times now. 😁
Excellent excellent excellent build !👍
Thank you👍
Really inspirational. Thanks for creating this video.
This is excellent - so many incredible skills and techniques on display.
Hi Greg! =)
Good to show that plane!
What a passion to build new and better so much joy to see. THANK YOU
Give me Power for my longtime Projekt sssss
Greetings from germany =)
Your skill and diligence in improving this kit is amazing. I wish I had that level of patience!
Sunday morning does'nt get better than watching you build what always was a questionable kit...all that work is so worthwhile ...real modelling. Brilliant vid..👍
Thank you
Very good video, an excelent work in that kit. you do an amazing work, thanks for sharing. Greetings from Portugal
Wonderful finish. The technique you use to improve these older basic kits are always impressive. Excellent video.
Superb. Absolutely superb. This was another of those Airfix kits that I'd look at all those years ago, and say to my young self...."nope, you'll never be able to build that" and my pocket money would go on something easier. Your skill and patience are matched by a wonderful end result. Bravo.
Many thanks!
Awesome job on that old kit!
I would have trashed it a long time ago.
It came close😁
Very excellent model, via _your_ hands and nice diorama at the end with the figures and cars. Looks like an Austin 1100 and maybe a Wolseley, great detail on them considering they're small tiny car models!
Good lord that 50s tooling looks like a pain in the ass
This is top notch modelling, Sir. Jaw dropping!
welcome back. although I like all your builds, I think I like it best when you bring an old unusual kit to life. great result.
Cheers👍
Really like these classic kit builds. Great job.
Great to see you back!
Excellent build.I thoroughly enjoyed watching.
Good to see you back on the tube and modelling Greg. Fantastic build as per usual. Looking forward to the ongoing kit builds 😊
Brilliant! Lots of work, but it turned out excellent
Great build Greg, your skill and patience are amazing. Thank you for sharing 👏👏
What a great upgrade of the original kit, absolutely great result
Hi Greg! ...Nice to see an upload from your 'studio' :D ...Really nice build!
Bravo Greg, another masterclass , very well done 👍
As ever always amazed by your work Greg. Almost makes me want to tackle one of these old kits. Almost!
It was a joy to watch, Greg. Magnificent work 👏
Cheers 😎
Another masterbuilt. Airfix should hire you when they get around upgrading this kit to 21st century standards
Good on ya for sticking with it. As tenacity is its own reward, thanks for sharing.
Fascinating, glued to the TV start to finish. Brilliant mate, and I nearly got the standard greeting at the beginning 😂 nice one
Yes nearly😂
What an incredible build 👍
Absolutely excellent work, making that kit really shine. Thank you for sharing. Hope things settle out for you.
Incredible exceptional work. Thanks from Sicily
