Georgeous build. I'll have to get one for myself.
Just ordered mine (arriving tomorrow) so will be hanging on to every word😊
How is it?
Hi Gary, in answer to your question about how the pilots get in/out of the cockpit, to get in we used to have to place one foot outboard foot) on the seat itself, grab the handhold above the windscreen and bring the other foot over the central console onto the floor in front of the seat. You could then swing your body into the seat while placing the other foot on the floor. Getting out was pretty much the reverse process. It sounds a bit awkward I’m sure, but with practice it was second nature, we used to do this at night during rotors turning hot crew changes.
On of those things that's just a matter of practice I suppose! Thanks for the info.
Great build Gary, your close up filming is perfect, can see properly.👍🇦🇺🇬🇧
I'm one of the lucky few that has used the " relief " tube in the Royal Navies Seakings on numerous occasions , in my younger days ...
Hi Gary, thanks for absolutly everything you do, its brilliant mate, so informative and enjoyable, the Simons matchbox challenge is amazing also, Simon is such a modelling guru, i am lucky enough that simon has helped me many times with my modeling. You guys are totally fantastic thank you so much xxxx
Hey Gary. Thanks for sharing the build with us. It looks fantastic. And thank you Airfix for this great kit. Can't wait to build it myself! Cheers!
what a great kit, well done Airfix. Great build Gary.
Great looking kit, I was especially impressed with all the bells and whistles in the cockpit area. Dry brushing you do looks great as always.
Beautiful..really lovely job..can't wait to get one myself
Brilliant Build Gary. I'm looking forward getting my hopefully soon xx 😊
Stunning result, Gary, and great filming.
This kit just looks great.A fine job you ve done it looks so realistic. The amount of detail one gets today is mind boggling.I remember doing an Airfix Seaking the USN version in the 1/72 scale it was so simple.
Great build Garry really impressed with what you have done on this mate! I can wait to get mine! Hopefully soon
Well done Gary, that’s a lovely job in a very short timescale. It looks like a great kit. I’ve got mine on pre-order through your link. Can’t wait to get started. Mind you the Gannet is not far off and then building for the group build. It’s going to be a busy autumn!
Great build Gary. Got one on pre-order and looking forward to building it. Does look like a well designed kit and using a few parts instead of 20 that some manufacturers do.
It looks like a nice kit Gary and you did a great job on it. I've always thought the Sea King was a great looking machine. Love the red scheme. Take care and happy modeling
Great job Gary, great kit too , Airfix are really going places 👍
Cracking model, you have done a lovely job. Can't wait to get mine!
Very nice indeed! I have pre-ordered it on the back of this video; plus you did it in my favourite livery for the Sea King! I remember for many years at our local airshow on the north coast of N. Ireland when the RAF would fly over and put on a rescue demonstration with the local RNLI lifeboat crew. The parked it in the local tennis courts so you could get a close up view while they were waiting for their slot - very cool!
Hi Gary, that was a absolutely outstanding build, your painting was outstanding, you mudt be congratulated on a job very well done, you had better watch the choppers you may get hooked on them, best regsrds from a Kiwi living in Australia 👍👍👍👍
Hmmm, maybe not Les. I don't have any more in the schedule so maybe I'm helicoptered out!
Hi Gary, great job. I’ve watched many builds of the new Sea King on RUclips and the wonderful fit of the kit is pretty consistent across all of them - great designing by Airfix.
Thankyou for the reply,i say this about the apollo rescue version because people can buy the 1/48 apollo capsule and could make a great diorama
Splendid build! Thanks for sharing tips and builds!👍🏾
My pleasure!
Well done Gary really great job.I like the way you talk us through the process and what to look out for, better than those builds with just bloody music. May get one and have a go at it
Epic! I don't know how you make them so fast. This is awesome!
Awesome build!
Looks stunning Gary, great video.
My hat's off to anyone that can do a helicopter as well as you just did.
Bravo. Looks nice. I must get this kit.
Nice job Gary. Looks great!
Looks like a great kit and a nice result. Well done Gary 👍🏻🇦🇺
Very impressive model, and it did look fun and rewarding.
Beautiful build, the camo is unbelievable
Nice build Gary. I wonder, would LED lights be a solution for the interior? I imagine it would make up for all the lost detail after assembly?
I like the way its been tooled very cleaver the way they have done it im yet to still add this kit to my collection and fantastic video too
Wow you built this kit really quickly and still you did it justice. It looks fantastic. I have it on pre-order but I won't start the build until I get my hands on a mask set.
Great job Gary. What I like about your builds is that I can aspire to improve towards your standard. Some of the stuff I watch is so mind boggling that I think, well I'll never have the time or patience to get anywhere near that.
Beau résultat !! Bravo ...
Great content and great information
Well Gary that a very nice job indeed .I like the Sea King a lot thanks for that. Steve U.K.
Perfect build 🔥🔥🔥
hi gary just ordered through your link great build and watch mate
Thanks Andy!
Many Thanks , Gary. Between Drachinifel and yourself, I was persuaded to visit The FAA Museum@ HMS Heron, on Monday. Thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Well worth the hassle getting to the museum, being a non-driver, and ridiculously great value at £15 online booking! now have been aboard both 001 and 002 Concorde prototypes ( 001 is at IWM Duxford). Loved the Carrier Experience reconstuction, although, having been aboard HMS Belfast last week, I was paying a lot more attention to the ancilliary fittings than I should have, maybe! ( ie electrial boxes,FAP signs, etc). Of course, relevant to this video, I boarded the ASR Sea king they have on loan from the RN
So glad you enjoyed it! A very well presented museum I think.
Gary you mentioned contrast when you were talking about the cables at the back of the cockpit and it reminded me. You often paint propeller tips white and then overpaint with yellow as the white undercoat makes the yellow stand out more. Maybe you could do the same with instrument panel lights when you want to use another colour like red, green, yellow, orange etc. The white would make those show up more, especially through a closed canopy.
That's what happens with the dry brushing - some bits pick up white so when you put the colour over them they stand out a bit more. Just done it on the instrument panel of the Hurricane in fact...
Random thought about the radar sweep arm. Maybe carefully measure where it should be and score with a knife.. then paint the whole screen in green , and treat the sweep as you would panel lines with a white or yellow wash and wipe off the excess?
There is an optional decal for the big radar screen as switched on, but as mine is folded and parked the set is off.
Nice Build Gary.
I have just bought on of these kits and was watching another build video, and in the instructions it tells you to paint the inside blue humbrol 25
but Nigels modeling bench got in touch with airfix and they said it should be grey 125
they missed the one off the number, just wondered what colour you did yours
Great video by the way
Nice I love it.
Looks like a decent kit Gary! I think I'll make it my next kit once I've finished building my Bristol Beaufighter!
It is a beauty!
Nice one mate!.. I want to get this kit.. HMS Eagle visited NZ in the early 70's with Sea Kings.. cool helicopter 👍🇳🇿
Ye did good Gary...Ah spent 15 years on the CH124 sea kings in the RCAF many hours riveting an painting.
Builds up very similar to the 72nd scale model, but I'm impressed with the level of detail, especially in the interior.
If I were to express a diorama with a helicopter like this, I would like to express it with a Kidult of the uh-60j Blackhawk "119 Helicopter Version" rather than that helicopter! 3:19
I would like to build the italeri Wessex , the Airfix Lynx and this Airfix Seaking . I would probably go with the Seaking as its a new tooling . Please Airfix surprise us with a Puma or Gazelle or maybe a Wasp or Scout next year . I really enjoyed the build Gary one day you will learn to love helicopters 🤗. Regards Gav.
If they do a Wasp I might still love them... in 1/48 of course! Cheers marra!
A great looking build and an impressive model. I saw this kit for the first time at RAF Odiham families day where Airfix had a little stand on 19 Aug. Even though helicopters are not my bag really I think I will get one. Being at Odiham it would be great if Airfix made a 1/48 British Chinook.
You'll have met Luke then, the researcher at Airfix who does their 3D scanning for future projects. I did tease him that his presence there meant a 1/48 Chinook in the future!
Yes he was a very enthusiastic guy and a great ambassador for Airfix. I agree a good 1/48 scale BRITISH Chinook would be a great addition to the range. Whilst in the MoD I worked in the Chinook project office on the Mid Life Update which was bringing our Chinooks up to the D model spec from a mechanical aspect. I also did some work on FADEC and two UOR's for Op Granby. I now see the aircraft has moved on a lot, especially with the cockpit instrumentation.@@garys_stuff
Magnificent Gary. Absolutely fantastic job. I see what you mean about that decal around the footholds. That is peculiar. Good fix though
Cheers Paul!
Great job thanks for building my dads helicopter xv666 from 1990
My pleasure - now you need to build one for him!
Wow nothing to said JOB WELL DONE....!!
Gary your internals are out of this world. I don’t think I have seen better excluding of course the OCD boys in the dark corners, truly wonderful and as for your instrument panels , well by ‘eck Gary!!
The growth has been so very fast matey. I guess building two kits a day will make or break one?! Lol 😮!!
Have you considered buying say four kits and doing a ‘deconstructed’ display (I can’t spell diorama) that shows all the beautiful parts that you create but are not really seen? Bet you would win an award or two……if you wanted to enter of course. You could start taking commissions!
Brilliant Gary
Bob
England
Thanks Bob! I did see a 1/48 kit of the He-111Z the other day in which one fuselage had some cut-away parts (lined in red in traditional style) and it looked amazing. Maybe the way forward for all the interiors that we lose!
Ill save this for the morning!
Yeah, sorry, it's a long video!!!
I build the 1/72 version way back in the 70s with the rescued pilot(?) in the raft in the only markings available along with the torpedoes
BRILLIANT GARY, THE PHOTO YOU HAVE USED ON YOUR BACKDROP SHOWS A SEAKING PAINTED HALF RED GREY, HALF YELLOW, DO YOU HAVE ANY PICTURES OF THE YELLOW SIDE. THINKING THAT MIGHT BE MY PAINT SCHEME WHEN PRE ORDERS ARRIVE. OBVIOUSLY I ORDERED THROUGH YOUR SELF WITH 2 FERRETS AS WELL
I don't have photos of the yellow side (it's RAF so I'm not sure the Fleet Air Arm Museum wanted to publicise it too much!!!). I think a yellow one will be out next year.
Sorry you don't like building choppers, Gary, because thisone and the previous are first-rate efforts.
Bravo!
Thanks Randy!
Meanwhile, elsewhere, there'll be an epic hour-long part 47 of a build series; "cyclic and collective painting amd weathering". 😂 You know who I mean. Well done, Gary. Great job, I enjoyed that, thanks.
If anything gets finished at all!
@@geordie_mech absolutely 👏🏻🤣
Who's this? Sounds entertaining! 😂
Very nicely done Gary the interior was lovely especially the instrument panels pity some of the inside was lost but if you had not done it every time you looked at you would feel like you had not given it your all 😔 so 10 out 10 👍
I know what you mean - kind of feels like cheating? Even though it isn't. Odd.
I wouldnt worry about the drill bit, the difference between the two is only 4 thou.
That's a wonderful build Gary, such a shame that all that superb interior detail is hidden
I agree with this defense of tanker because otherwise, it will get worse. As you said, the marines have more backups than what we, the public think
???
Great build Gary! I'm looking forward to getting my one (it's on pre-order) and displaying it alongside the Sea Vixen and the Buccaneer....now when is that Scimitar due out...?
Early next year is what I've heard...
Impressive build. If i were to build this it would be an Apollo 11 version.
The Apollo 11 version is the sikorsky seaking by Hasegawa
Fantastic build, Gary. Is fitting the seat belts an added value? I thought you were going to use paint scheme from the Seaking behind you.
where do you display all your builds perhaps a video showing your huge collection and how its displayed
They are stored in boxes- I don't have a display case!
Also loved the display of the remains of the Shorts 184 flown by "Rutland of Jutland": ironic that it was complete at the IWM until the Luftwaffe damaged it in WW2, and the Project to construct a Fairey Barracuda from 2 wrecks, + new engineered parts, just so one will exist somewhere- I have donated to this and encourage anyone who can, to do so
Gary I'm hoping to get one and I want to do the Westland Sea King HU.5 XV666, Heli-Operations, Portland, Dorset, England 2022. (D)
Looks great. 3 will be coming my way if and when the Yellow one is released mayby 4 if go i for the Half and half one behind, maybe Airfix will do that scheme
My feeling is that the yellow one will be a year 2 release (maybe late next year or early 2025). It's a hugely popular scheme, as is the commando HC.4.
@@garys_stuff I was surprised it wasn't one of the schemes. But seeing the 60/50 RAF/Royal Navy ASR behind you in the video that would look good on the shelf
@@MrPDoff the idea of this first kit was that it is the same airframe (XV666) in the four versions it has appeared in. Their game plan is always to have at least 2 future releases in mind with any new tooling kit - so the yellow RAF and the Commando HC4 are likely, also some export aircraft especially the Belgian SAR colours.
@@garys_stuff well tgor me I think Airfix a putting themselves where they should be, back at the top of their game. My stash is getting mird red than anything else now
@@MrPDoff I would agree that Airfix are stepping up their game considerably. They have a very good team of designers, a very good researcher and management who back them. The new style starter sets are very good indeed, let down slightly by the tube of glue and the Humbrol paints, and their high-end kits are very good indeed. Also, from a creator perspective, they are very open and very helpful, they engage strongly with the digital community. It's good for them, of course, but they have taken that on very well. Looking forward to the Ferret and the Gannet, that's for sure!!!
A cracking build Gary, looks fantastic.
Such a shame so much of the inside can't be seen. I'm sure some very clever person will in future eork out how to fit a small LED light inside to make it stand out a bit more.
I hasten to add, that's not me, far beyond my skills.
I think there are mouldings for ceiling lights, and there is room in the tail for the control chip and battery...
@@garys_stuffsomeone is bound to do it then at some point.
Nice Job Gary 👍🏻🇦🇺
Thank you so much David!
Pity they didnt include the apollo rescue version like the airfix 1/72
The Apollo recovery aircraft was an S-61, there are too many differences with the Westland Sea King especially around the engine bays. That's not to say they can't do one in the future with different outer shells...
Nice job Gary! I think i will wait and do the yellow version though.Just a quick one ,i have tried to join your FB page but with no luck or is it just for your members only?
No, no reason why it won't stop you unless your FB account is less that 24 months old, in which case I can accept you - but there is nothing pending.
@@garys_stuffThanks for the Info Gary ,i will take another look.
Brilliant - what red did you use ?
It was the Tamiya flat red, XF-7.
Hi Gary. I really wish you hadnt rushed this one. It was really looking like you hadnt dry fitted anything and there was near zero sprue nib clear uo on parts before you threw parts together. I am glad however that you didnt try and get all removeable/opening panel gaps filled and completely flush as they really arent perfect on the real thing.
Oops! The yellow main rotor isn't folded. It's positioned straight back 😮
Well then Airfix made the same mistake on their build! I will ask their researcher about this as it will be his fault, of course...
Do that! Because now I am confused. I saw an informed comment on another channel about this. It may be BS, if so please find out! 😊
@@soppdrake I have sent a message to the all-knowing Luke - also might ask the guys at Classic Helicopters (who have about five Sea Kings, and several ex-service pilots).
Sorry - Historic Helicopters....
@@garys_stuff A picture of the RAF yellow Seaking had its yellow one on other side
Nice video !
Well airfix where to start...but this one looks ok ,still for 2023 kit it got issues but looks good if you compare it with other Seaking kits that are available around all these years ,price is up there for sure ! I still dont understand why Airfix failing so badly to adapt to the quality that other model kit manufacturers produce ,for me after many many years the only very good model from Airfix that actually decide to buy and build... and really enjoyed was the Avro Anson !
Your hands are always in front of the model
he calls me terrible in 100 ways I will only say two reasons because it will take all day
it is It takes me one day to do the cockpit the noticed I did it wrong and the other one is that it also the slats take me 2 days then mess up the plastic
Why have Airfix become so over priced, £55 for a 1/48, for that price it should fly
Nah....airfix...nah!👎
