Fantastic build. I used to fly the Skyvan for International Air Cargo Ltd. in the 1970's, so you can imagine that I have built numerous Skyvan kits. I can still remember how exciting it was when the kit first came out. None of them have ever been easy builds, usually due to warped fuselage parts. A hint for weathering. It was almost impossible to keep the lower vertical stabilizers clean due to engine exhaust. If it was allowed to stay on too long, the tail would be stained forever.
We had a company come to us wanting a contract to clean our Skyvans. They guaranteed to get the exhaust stains off. We told them to have at it. They washed for two day, left, and we never saw them again. The stains were still there.
between 70s and 80s my father was supervising constraction like public roads, bridges etc in small island of Cyclades (Siros, Milos, Kythera, etc) and many times i travelled with him in summers mostly with this exact type of airplane due to small airways in first airports. Still remember the noise of starting the engines.....
Really enjoyed this. My late Dad worked in Short Brothers. I remember being a young boy and sometimes he would bring me down and I got to see some of these close up. Later as a young man I flew with my girlfriend (now wife ) from Belfast to Leeds Bradford in one. What an experience 😮.
Beautiful build of a kit from my childhood. Particularly sweet as I am sitting at my computer about a mile and a half from where they were built. Many thanks
Magnificent outcome Greg. An oldie I distinctly remember avoiding at My Model shop. Now having seen your handy work Greg , I’ll shop around for one to build 🫶👍
Excellent to see this build, Greg. The mid-late 70s was a golden age for models. So many obscure subjects were kitted, many seemingly insane commercial decisions. And while some kuts were dogs, a lot were really good. I remember in the late 80s/90s it all died off, companies like Esci and Airfix went bust, and new subjects were rare. Many of us assumed new hobbies and games would kill modelling altogether. But, here we are in the second golden age.
I'd argue that today is actually a golden age or at least a new second golden age of modelling. Just look at the vast array of after market detail up kits resin and photo etch add ons available for most kits. Not to mention the availability of 3D printers and home made kits/models/designs. There's still a huge array of obsucre subjects just not from the big name brands like Airfix. You should look for small kit makers and resin kits there's many and most do obscure stuff. Looking around on RUclips I'd argue the hobby is as big as it's ever been.

Hi Greg. Another great build. Airfix should just send you all their. vintage kits and ask you to build them as you seem to be the only guy that can turn out a decent result from them!!
A pleasing aircraft and a pleasing build! I've always liked this aircraft since my dad made one out of wood, back in the 60s, and mounted it on a spike on the garage roof, where it faced into the wind with its propellors spinning, for many years. I still have its remains in the attic. Thanks for the memories!

Oh my goodness. It's the 70s. I'm in Woolworths. And lots of Airfix's offerings are saying "buy me buy me" except this one! The Skyvan was one kit I knew I'd never be able to build well. Greg, the end result you've produced is yet another masterpiece. Bravo. Superb work.
Some memories there building that kit at twelve. Little did I know I would be turning them around at Manchester Airport on night shift Data post . Then working at the Shorts factory early 2000 . I spoke with the pilots on many occasions asking about how they flew . They said they were solid and reliable but did not like cross and head winds to much. As far as I know about the fuselage the concept was to use this as aerodynamic lift hence it's shape. Fitted with the ever so reliable PT 6 it was regarded as a great work horse. Replaced by the 340 and 360 later . Thanks for the build love the channel. More please.
I really enjoy those classic kits. Nowadays most people seem to avoid them because of raised panel lines, lack of detail and sometimes less than ideal fit. But they are a great way to improve our skills as scale modelers. You did an amazing job by the way, from start to finish.

I used to skydive out of a Skyvan in the early 80's. Exiting through the rear door was always fun especially if you took a dive at it with a bit of a run up. It was also fun to exit facing forwards, looking back up at its distinctive dumpy shape with the string of skydivers who followed me out stretching back up into the back of it. I can still picture it.
Lot of model content creators show spending a ton on aftermarket. This is just good old modelling skill applied to an old-school kit. The result is perfectly grand. Just a great tutorial for your punters.

Your videos that feature & build these vintage Airfix kits are wonderful! I “cut my teeth” on these early Airfix kits, along with UPC “pee wee” & Hawk kits. The Airfix 1:72 “Walrus”, & “Short Stirling” are enshrined on my bench. Thank you Greg for breathing fresh air into these kits with an Masters touch! On to the Next!
Looking back I can't help marveling at the level of detail of Airfix 1/72 models when the molds were made in an age without CAD/CAM and CNC milling. During the 70s, I saw a reference where an Airfix rep mentioned that the molds cost 10,000 UK pounds. Airfix would have been hard pressed to turn a profit on the less popular models at that cost. The plastic baggie models were selling for 1 UKP IIRC before the switch to blister packaging.
Picking those old Airfix kits is a leap of faith, some come out ok and others can be a source of sprue goo. This appears to be a kit that can be built with some persistence and produce great results in the end. Great job Greg. Cheers Bob
I remember my oldest brother builded this kit back in 1976 while playing 10cc on the background😊

Great build of a very obscure kit!
Great build Greg. Skill and perseverance have paid off again! 👏
Another nice build of an unusual subject. Cheers
*Oldy but Goody, you did the best with this Airfix kit, good job!*
Great job! Some of these old kits can be a challenge.
very nice build i like the old airfix kits fun to build
Great build and model, thanks for doing the video 👍🏻
Chuff me that kits older than I am 🤣🤣🤣. Great job on an antique Greg, surprised it wasn't marked up in shillings 🤪 Top man as per, keep em coming pal
Cheers Mark 😎
That is beautiful! You are so inspiring.
Lovely job, Greg! An excellent rendition of a Whispering Nissen Hut 😂😂
😂😂
Cheers Bob
Thanks Bob 👍
