Purposeful Shortage | Sunday Rant | Trucking Answers

  • The Sunday Rant has always speculated about this. A recent article suggests that the companies with the highest turnover actually benefit from that turnover. It costs less to hire new drivers than to keep experienced drivers. The churn is a profit center. That makes sense because all companies will do whatever costs the least. Truck drivers can take advantage of this by continually switching companies every year or two. This will result in the maximum income due to sign on bonus money. Get it and move on to the next one.

Takes sooo long, and so many conditions to get that bonus, most people never see it.

In front of the news cameras they are scratching their heads, cameras off behind closed doors, they are celebrating!! This is how they keep labor costs down!!

Just remember bonus money is taxed at a much higher rate. 😢

I was averaging about $480 after taxes in 1994 running regional. When you convert that to 2023 there are drivers making less. Funny to see my whole career wages stayed the same no matter how long you been doing it.

That's what fiat currency does. Nothing backing it so it's printed and loaned out into oblivion reducing the value every year. Eventually it will collapse. That's why they're trying to implement digital currency, so the banks and government will have total control.

I've said that a company driver today should be making starting out pay should be $1.00 pm. And O/O at least $5.00 pm for all miles plus fsc.

Mark, I don't have any of those problems keeping drivers. I just don't. I've been in business now for a little over a year now and I've only had to replace one driver and that was due to a driver passing away. I pay my drivers very well and I talk to and treat them all with respect. So far to date I've only had 3 late deliveries and all 3 were due to inclimate weather. My company is doing well without all those sorts of headaches. Most companies spend way too much time and money coming up with new ways to fuck over their drivers. When you simply pay your drivers their worth and give them the decision-making authority and responsibility, they do well on their own with little to no supervision. I just love doing business this way. Like I said 99% less headaches and problems equal 99% less stress on everyone and that is a working business equation I love.

      Absolutely Sir
A straight forward relationship is enjoyable for all and easy to manage
It's amazing how much money some carriers spend on marketing ,recruiting, fake sign on pay, travel etc . Detail clean turnover trucks etc ..
Good job Sir, an honest, respectful environment is motivating and rewarding.
      CONGRATULATIONS.

@@mudtrucking -- I don't at this time no but thanks for asking. As my company grows, I will be putting out information about my company and my driver requirements. They are comprehensive and I do stick to them at all times. But my drivers are compensated among the best in the industry, and I do not stick my nose in their day-to-day operations. They are not only company drivers, but they are treated as though they own their truck and their own business.

Add new enough, Mark, I am one of the most senior drivers at the Korean mafia as well. However we have grown exponentially in the eight years that I have been here. There are still a few drivers that have been here longer than I

So, a relay system is similar to Line Haul , kind of, both drivers get home on a daily basis, I had a relay one time, Philly to Lancaster, Pa. Somewhere around there, even though I drove LTL. They should bring back the relay system than. I dunno. I am so very glad that I’m not a trucker anymore!

The NEW GUY makes more money than you.. They hired you at .50cpm and gave you a 2000 FTL CLASSIC, the next guy they hire they give him .55cpm and give him a newer truck, next guy gets an even newer truck and you have been asking for a newer truck and you have been asking for one since the 2000. Now it’s 2023 and today the newest guy gets a 2024 KW T680 with zero miles and all the bells and whistles. Your voice is just going forgotten and the opportunity keeps getting better for the new guy and you keep getting left in the dark having the most experience with the company..

That doesn't make sense because when you do get to start accepting the advantage they find something to not pay you. I worked for Davis Express in Stark Florida until they started paying you and I had malfunctioning brakes and flatten super single tire and took my enrollment pay and Safety Bonus

I never really understood the sign on bonus if you can give someone $5000 sign on bonus paid in a year and yet you run 20 people through orientation each week why not give new drivers 1000$ sign on bonus And every driver for each year they are driving for you give them a $5000 sign on bonus to me it would make more sense rather than hiring people every week and giving it to them
