  • In no order, these are the worst companies to drive for ever. Never work for one of these mega carriers. They do not treat drivers with respect and do not train drivers properly. If you drive a truck, don't do it here.

    I've actually worked for small to medium sized trucking companies that treated me worse than Prime (but had better pay). They all lie. 🤷 Having my class-A for 6 years now, I've come to grips with the fact that a 'good company' is the unicorn of the trucking industry. Pick your poison. . . 💀

      Yep! Its true, I was at a great company near st louis, paid phenomenally, nice trucks, pretty much as good as it gets but then they tried to coerce me into drive empty in a 55-65mph wind dust storm on a two lane road, AND the fact that they PU/delivered to St. Louis allll the time, more than weekly, StL is one of the most dangerous cities in the entire world, #1 most dangerous in the US. It's such a shame the vast majority of trucking companies are so daggom bad... it wouldn't be so bad if all they did was just let the trucks go over 75, then we wouldn't have to deal with nearly as much bs, nearly as many cars bc everybody would be spaced far apart

    I am a black man. My first trucking job at tmc was a nightmare. During orientation I got accused of leaving the door open on a tractor that I was never near. Then the day before I was supposed to go out with the trainer I overheard management telling him that he apologize for pairing him up with a "brother" immediately he switched me with another trainer and I decided to leave. They put on my dac report that I quit during training. That was in 2012. I should have handled it differently.

    Covenant Transportation force dispatched and alot of drivers were turning over trucks in high wind and their policy was NO TRUCK MOVES UNDER ICY CONDITIONS with mandatory shut downs but the dispatchers always asked "why aren't you moving, get going" and had drivers sliding off the roads and having accidents. If you quit or get fired, forget about getting your last paycheck. There were so many other problems there such as they don't pay layover or detention pay. They have on guard and lane departure and it sends a critical event like if you swerve to miss a gator retread on the road and will fire you if you get to many. I could go on and on about the bad things. Even getting home time was hard to get. PLEASE DON'T GO TO THEM.

  • @bltodd578

    I went through TMC orientation. In fact me and my friend went together and we had the most horrible experience. It was like military boot camp. You will get cussed at and disrespected and told not to stand on the grass and you will be treated 2nd. That don’t treat you like a 1st place guy. We had to share the same hotel room. When you first arrive at the hotel they will make you sign in on a clipboard and that will indicate who is solo in their rooms so if your roommate fails or leaves they will immediately find another person to bunk you up with. Also me and my buddy went in with driving experience. You will have at least 2 weeks of training with a driver trainer on the road. You will rim the truck as if you’re teaming which means the trainer drives during the day and you drive at night. They try to find a driver trainer within 150 miles of your zip code. However my buddy was only able to get a trainer that was 350 miles away which means he would have to drive to that person location and park his vehicle and leave to wherever the trainer lives. The trainer can only guarantee you two showers during the week of training and you’re not guaranteed to come home at the end of each week because y’all are running the truck like a team and the trainer can request longer distant loads for racking up miles. Some people that have to drive long distant to their trainer won’t go home instead they will do a 34 reset in the truck while the trainer sleeps in the comfort of their own home. That being said my experience sucked and i would not recommenced TMC. I will say Maverick might not pay as good and i don’t know for sure. However the recruiter said once I’m done with their month training on their yard i would not need a driver trainer because of my previous experience. Best bet is to stay away from the mega carriers anyways because the LTL industry is where the money is if you have your doubles/triples, hazmat, and tankers. LTL pay is between 55 cpm to 71 cpm and the hourly pay for local is 21hr to 30hr. Check Old Dominion, FedEx Freight, UPS Freight for those pay rates.

    Western Express is worse than swift. One situation is where I'd drop off a load and had to wait THREE days to get an empty along with several other drivers. We did not get paid for that time. Being told we'd be fired if we went to the terminal in California without permission. There's not very many places to park in socal without shelling out bucks. I've had several years driving experience but they forced me to go out with a driver trainer for about three weeks. I only got paid .26cpm and the list goes on and on. Currently there. Recently got CDL amd they were the first company that seemed interested. Just beginning I know having no experience limits me. Live load after live unload with times so scattered I sit around with nothing but time to think. I'm just praying ill make the right move when I'm able to leave. Making now 47 cents a mile I'm only averaging maybe 800 a week. All this time on the road needing more money than I need home time. I was hoping to be able to make more. Unfortunately not here at Western. I just finished a delivery of a live load at 10. Finished at 11:30 and im probably sure I won't get another load until tomorrow if I'm lucky. That will be another live unload load situation. Likely going only less than 300 miles 😢Met a crete driver who sung praise of his company telling me he's been there 4 years and within the first year was able to make 80k. Now he's making 100k+. Looks like I'll have to have a year of experience to get into the good companies. Sadly that's another 7 months or so.

Put me on grey hound out to Missouri via Philadelphia put me in a barrack dorm with a random dude Next day Physical the examiner took my urine sample with no gloves spilling piss all over the counter as she pouted it into a separate bottle. They served some some nice penitentiary style chow Then off to orientation. About 25 minute in I walked out hoped on a plane back home paid out of pocket for Cdl school and been rolling ever since. Prime Logistics Corp out of Algonquin, Illinois was by far the worst company I ever worked for. This company is not to be confused with Prime, Inc. out of Springfield, Missouri. They’ll claim you can make $10k to $18k per month, with 90% line haul pay. You don’t, and that’s not the only lie they tell. I ended up abandoned at a scale house because they would not pay for repairs done on their trailer. Look into them, they have no good reviews.

    Werner was ok when I started out. Not too strict, and I got a new Kenworth T680 after 14 months but I left. The Greyhound rides
    and shared rooms are part of the deal.
    Weekend dispatch was horrible and they have no idea where the empty trailers are with certainty. The million milers don’t make much more than new drivers. They increase.01 cpm every year but it stops after so many years like 5. A driver that’s been there 30 years makes .05-.10cpm more that’s not much!
    I made 67k on my 3rd year and realized that’s the most I’ll probably make there aside from the .01 cpm raise every year and a 401k match.

      I prefer smaller companies as a company driver as they usually have less red tape, are easier to work with, give you more freedom and most have one day to do drug screen and next day on the road. I have worked for all size companies. The large ones are all pretty much the same-you are a number and expendable. Just make sure you let them know from day one that they need you and you don't need them. Be sure you will be paid for detention, layover, sweeping out trailers, etc before you even go there. Don't walk in looking desperate and don't seem anxious or they will think they have you under their foot already. That is how I approach it but to each their own.

    Schneider Trucking I am not surprised by. Years ago when I was processing out of the military. They had us sit and watch a VCR tape of 'career opportunities', and it was to become a truck driver with Schneider Trucking. I realized right away obviously these jobs are not being filled. So the government wanted to minimize the number of Veterans being unemployed after getting out of the military. Schneider Trucking also probably paid a fee to promote their company (this was before the days of the internet, so often it was very expensive/difficult to fill certain jobs). the real benefit though now is people can give feedback online to what it is really like to work in certain places.

    When I Started trucking I was paid .26cpm at CRST. Trained at J-Tech school in Jacksonville. Forced team driving earning $300-$780 a week. I made some lifelong friends but ended up suing CRST in a class action lawsuit at they contracted us for 2 years to pay back $7000. We were running 6000 miles a week back to back for 8 weeks at a time. Never again, then i did 7 Months at knight which wasn’t all that bad. Had a terrible dispatcher that’s would call me up drunk at 2am talking about his personal life daily (which i felt very awkward about). OTR at knight driving company I made about $900-$1,100 a week after taxes. Now I’m running local for a family owned company and take home $1200, $1800 a week. There is light at the end of the tunnel, personally i stay away from Megas now with the exception of ABF, UPS, FEDEX etc (I’ve heard they are good). Apparently RUAN are paying $43hr atm and with a guaranteed 50 hours a week. But i now trust NO recruiters in this industry, mostly blowing smoke.

    If anyone reading this lives in Arizona and are thinking of starting off with a company, head to DSW in tucson (You can park it at Swift terminal if you live in phoenix or close to it). They pull swift BUT you are NOT a swift driver. Its family owned and its smaller but you are not treated like a number. Its swift pay but the dispatch are previous drivers and I haven't had any problems with them. They get stuff done. Its slip seat if you take more days than you earn but the detailers do amazing job once someone is done with the truck. You will get a nice clean truck everytime. Also you can take up to 30 days home time whenever! Just have to give them a decent reason and you won't have to worry about losing your job. They are understanding.
    I started off with them and went to Crete but went back to them
    The pay at crete was a lot better, I was making .55 cents a mile compared to .40 cents now, but I will still choose DSW over Crete. I'm only doing another year then gonna head local.

      Two hour orientation? I would at least like to know their policies, haves a tour of their shops, some questions answered, meet my dispatcher, etc. The test drive that I spent most of my yrs with and retired from took two hrs. The examiner (nice guy) he had me going to places where I would pickup, and deliver. He gave me a tour of the area while we basically visited. If a company wants to get you out on the road that fast, I’d have some concerns about the company. The company that I retired from paid for orientation, hotel room (no two people to a room), and three meals. Like to meet people in the company and get the lay of the facilities. They had 300 plus drivers and it was a first name company. They wanted to get to know you.

    I'm on with Pam and truthfully outside of the pay , I'm not having any problem with the company.
    At the end of the day I realize I was making the exact same amount as I was making with my normal 9 to 5 job; working only 8 hours a day, 2 days off, home time every day. Should not be equivalent to what an OTR driver is making. That's unjustifiable, there is nothing that can kill your morale with a company more than recognizing you was doing better, working at a job that was barely paying you a living wage.

    I've worked for CRST and USA Trucks. CRST was okay to start with and get enough experience to leave. You have to start somewhere. USA was okay but the pay was trash. They were one of the few people who would take me with an accident at the time so I had to roll with it. My dispatcher was awesome though. She was promoted and I left not long after.

    Basically any trucking company that's running dry van, (Aka...Low paying freight) that requires you to eat shitty truck stop food, and bump docks...

    I ran JB Hunt dedicated for a few months and was fired for a no fault accident. Was planning on leaving anyway. They have a required weekly meeting with no extra pay and always asking you do more computer training. The micro managing was taking its toll on me. Some people are ok with people telling them what to do all the time not me. They also had a fuel list you had to use. So most of the time I am fearing I am going to run out fuel because I did not have a load near a fuel stop. I worked a lot of 16 hour days with them also. If they paid by the hour for local would not be a bad gig. All drivers there get cpm pay.

      16 hour days? You must mean 14 hour days. 😁

    • @mrj-charles6383
      @mrj-charles6383 5 лет назад

      16 hour rule is for a day cab driver that returns to the same place daily. Your not supposed to use it just because you want to finish the route but JB implied that and if I still did not make it back they would get me a hotel.

    • @TruckingAnswers
      @TruckingAnswers  5 лет назад

      This is still only once a week unless separated by a 34 hr break and still does not extend driving hours, only on-duty hours. There must be much sitting.

    • @TruckingAnswers
      @TruckingAnswers  5 лет назад

      BTW, if they had gotten you a hotel they would have to restart the once a week rule because you would not have been released from your reporting location so there would be no 16 hour exception in your near future

      I searched for videos about companies to work for and found this video. I am a brand new to be CDL driver and a woman 65 years old. Old enough and Savvy enough to know to do my research ahead of time. I am finding great value and these comments.
      So I'll try to document all the companies not to work for. The Next Step will be finding one to apply to in the next week. Appreciate any recommendations for good companies that also provide CDL training for new drivers I understand that I may have to sign a one-year contract and would be appreciative and willing to do so in exchange for the training, if it's a reputable company. As a woman I can't imagine going through some of the crap mentioned in these comments.
      I appreciate the people who contributed to these threads.

      Windy hill foliage/transportation, that's where I started, put in one year otr saved up a lot of money, I liked that they were laid back compared to other companies, they haul paper and plants midwest-southeast

    Have a good attitude, be fair, and find one where you feel fits you and is fair. I think they're all more alike than not. Truckers have a tendency to grumble about everything. I was happy at Carolina Cargo and am happy at CFI. 2 entirely different companies. Attitude counts for a lot.

    Okay these demands and expectations are for a very experience , spotless recurd and with excellent work ethics. but when a lot of these drivers are fresh off the boat and brand new can be that pinky or if you have a questionable background. I would imagine most people watching your channel or newcomers so they cannot expect all of that

    I ended up driving for a cold storage facility that has their own drivers. It pays by the hour which means overtime pay after 40 hours which is by Wednesday, home almost daily. if i get stuck out they pay for the hotel, parking, and meals. its a Mon-Fri job though Saturdays are offered. Again that's at OT. when my kids were younger and still living at home a Blue Cross Blue Shield plan for a family of four costed me only $85 a week. I literally stumbled across this job which has been a excellent decision. This April will make 12 years at this job. A good driving job does exist. Don't just look at the trucking companies. Many facilities have their own drivers that pay well.
