This series is an absolute dumpster fire, based on what I’m seeing every single big Goosebumps fan is hating this. As a queer person the constant “This character’s personality trait is gay” in these shows really rubs me the wrong way, the teen drama being the core element is a mess, the adaptation of The Haunted Mask is horrendous to me as a fan of that book. (Also the references to porn and serial killers? Like if you’re going to age up Goosebumps go harder with the scares, not the teen drinking and sexual dialogue)
Man, I’m so glad I’m seeing more folks like yourself come out and call it like it is. You know who was a phenomenal gay character, and the writers were smart enough not to make it her personality? Theo from the Haunting of Hill House on Netflix. There’s a humongous difference between a wonderful character like Theo and someone obnoxious and stereotyped as someone like James, whom gets on my last nerve lol. I would also like to add to your comment that I can't stand when horror movies in general always portray teenagers the exact same way, always being sex crazed party goers with alcohol and looking for trouble and make careless mistakes that result in scary things happening to them. Like is there really no other more interesting characteristics to teenaged characters they could come up with???

100% agree, made it 10 minutes in, and turned it off when I saw it basically was exaclty what i was afraid it would be. Just another example of all the things wrong with "entertainment" made for "modern audiences". Besides the fact that its biggest crime is being incredibly boring and dull to the point of complete uninterest, there is also no actual plot, no story, no character developmemt, just a bunch of things happening with unlikeable, undeveloped characters with tons of leftist woke BS. I agree with what you said regarding the dialoge, I absolutely can't stand the constant millenial/Gen Z quippy joke heavy dialogue, with all those annoying inflections, just everyone in general not talking like actual people talk. And I was just waiting to see how long it would take for the first gay character to appear whose only personality trait would be "I'm gay" and it beat my own expectations with how quickly that happened. Also, I hate how subversive and sexual they had to make it. Either make it in the spirit of the original and be kid friendly, or make it fully for adults and ramp up the horror. Especially as someone with small children, it makes me feel gross to see this advertised as somethint more for children and then to see the amount of sexual or subversive things in it. Typical Disney on that though, i guess. What an absolute turd, like most everything else that has been made in the past decade or so.

I can't believe how much potential was wasted, honestly I'm not very surprised as it is Disney. All they had to do with this episode was just focus mainly on the cursed camera with all the terrifying events it predicts, but my main concern is why it had to be Disney. Even Netflix potentially could of made a promising well-adapted Goosebumps show just like how they did with One Piece and Creeped Out. Such a big let down!

All they had to do with the episode was just focus on the camera and show many different horrifc events yet to happen. Honestly the part when the main guy got his arm broke and his bone sticking out, it did gave me chills cause I didn't expect that.

I have only watched one episode but I feel like it has let me down. It feels like goosebumps is the big name they chose but it feels like a teen drama with forced gen z jokes. I like they included the plot and story with the boy dying in the fire so hopefully they can incorporate it into the goosebumps side of things. At the moment feels more like a teen horror drama thing rather than goosebumps

One thing I did appreciate about the first episode is at least the camera this time looks more like an actual old time camera, whereas the 90's adaptation just looked extremely weird and too sci-fi. The camera being more normal looking actually makes it more scary to me personally
That poor man deserves so much better than this crap. I love Stine so much. I know he defended the Fear Street movies, and we can argue about the quality of those movies all day long, but the people defending this Goosebumps show almost never mention how it’s nothing like Goosebumps.

I figured this show would be bad, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how horrible this has been, so far lol. No one can explain, Michael, that Disney+ only released episodes 3 and 4, there is no one and two, or even five. Is this the same with you? Or is this just like an Australian thing? I'm a 90s kid I grew up with goosebumps books and the TV show on fox kids, I'm a big goosebumps fan, I was very optimistic about the new 2023 series and after just finishing it I am very very dissapointed, the budget looks decent the delivery was awful I think fans made films could do a much better job
There’s actually a Haunted Mask short fan film on RUclips (I don’t remember the channel), but I made a video about it years ago. Really solid, and manages to feel like Goosebumps whilst also having an adult, and dark, tone. Sad to see such a high budget be squandered lol
I am sooooo thankful I watched the first episode myself and not with my kids. I had very very low expectations given Disney and Hollywoods track records on reboots. They managed to shoot so far below my expectations it’s disgusting. My 8 and 5 year old love when I read my old goosebumps books to them and there’s absolutely no way in hell I would let them watch this absolute trash show. I am so over Disneys propaganda push. Im really not trying to be too judgental here.....but why does every paranormal themed show catered to preteens/teenagers have to specifically center around the highschooler only being limited to the kids being in high school in a strange town where bad things start to happen just because kids started making stupid mistakes and/or were trying to fit in by attending some dumb party or pulled some prank? Its just getting so repetitive. You know what wouldve been an absolutely amazing idea for a Goosebumps series? If the show was about each kid from different books getting stranded in Horrorland! It could've been like that animated series about those teens being stranded on the island trying to survive in Jurassic park, except with monsters instead of dinosaurs. Hell, they couldve made a whole series based on all the "Enter Horrorland" books alone! Those books had much more excitement and substance than these constantly recycled teen dramas will ever know.

I knew there was going to be SJW, political stuff in it, bad scriptwriting, and a veering away from the books. This was a fast cash grab just like every other remake/reboot crap coming out there nowadays. I knew this show wouldn't be anything like Goosebumps. My expectations were very low at the start and the reviews I'm hearing just confirm what I've been thinking and saying. This show won't come back for a 2nd season---mark my word! Stick with the '90s series, it's more faithful to the Goosebumps books and the whole GB universe.

The trailer didn't feel like Goosebumps at all. It's like someone wrote a teen slasher and then got the Goosebumps license so they shoved that in there. Maybe it's decent for what it is, but I wish it were Goosebumps. I wish every episode was it's own story so even if some sucked we'd have a chance that some were quality.

Rewatching this to get out my frustration with this CRAP show. Such a shame that we are going down this route of consistently ruining good shows with CRAP remakes. How easily this could've been made a great show instead of teen drama propaganda. See, I enjoyed the Power Rangers movie you’re referring to, because I love dark and gritty entertainment. Matter of fact, my favorite Goosebumps are the very darkest of the franchise. But this isn’t dark and gritty, at all lol. It’s written and performed like a comedy with horribly generic “spooky” music pinned over it.

Ive just finished the first episode and in a nutshell, the biggest flaws I wanna point out first before I can share atleast some pros is: Not scary at all, I know I'm asking a lot for that statement, especially it's Goosebumps, but come on, this is like a student's film attempt to atleast terrify you The teen melodrama just feels forced, atleast I get more enjoyment on the Fear Street Netflix movies as that's honestly where they should belong. lols. The dialogue sucks The script sucks The first episode, the titular camera barely makes a deal. like all what happens with it is like 5 mins just to build with atleast an okay climax in the football and it's ridiculous how we build up 30-35 mins just to get to that point and the first 30 mins of it are just pure I don't give a damn thing about the kids Now to my positives: I actually like the beginning, it did reminded me of something in the Goosebumps books as exposition or lore building which is common but what it actually is it's like something from a GB Most Wanted Special Edition The thing with the ghost boy is actually kind of cool as the villain. Overall, the first episode is probs like a 1.75 / 5. lols. I still gotta watch atleast the other episodes and see if theg can atleast be improved or whatever. but if it somehow got worse then damn. The Haunted Mask has no way they'll make that book no justice, atleast be good!!!

Forced myself to watch and knew it was going to be bad but wanted to see if I could be wrong. Dialogue is unrealistic and story is unoriginal and the mystique and ominous tone the original series had is gone. It would have been better as an anthology where no one knew each other and Slappy or even Karl from the Chillogy was the host since all stories take place in the same town giving brief commentary in each episode here and there for comedic effect. Sounds better than the Freddy Krueger type storyline they wrote to tie all the stories together.
Yeah, sadly lol. And I highly doubt they have guaranteed a new season. There’s a very small fraction of people liking the show, and it made it to #1 on Hulu for a single day before dropping all the way down to #6 less than a day later. I refuse to believe that show is doing well financially lol.

honeslty iv been watching it the first 2 and most of episode 3 and grew up as a big fan i dont mind it so far im fine with doing a diffrent adaptation trying to tie it all into 1 thing im not aposed to there is some evolution on some of the plots but so far its not bad honestly im still having fun with it mind you im coming from reading the orignal og books and watching a heavly amount of the orignal tv show as i owned many on vhs and even seen the 2 films with jack black but i dont mind this so far my opinion could change

Just finished binging all 5 of the episodes. Its just very mediocre teen drama that has almost nothing to do with goosebumps. I had to remind myself watching all the parent divorce scenes and other irrelevant things that, yep im watching show based on goosebumps. I cant say im disappointed since i went in knowing its not gonna be related to the books, but i wish it was just more enjoyable. Who knows, maybe the next 5 episodes can actually focus on the monsters and stuff instead of drama between characters i dont care much about. This is just some woke agenda driven nonsense, this is nowhere near goosebumps. You can see the effort they put into including people from every ethnicity and background, and put zero effort in writing actual characters. And why tie every episode to one another? The beauty of goosebumps is stories set in different vibes and atmosphere. If you wanna connect stories to some level, they could at least learn from the horrorland series

I’ve only watched the first episode and I can agree that the show is absolutely god awful just based off first impressions. I don’t think there’s much politically going on with the show which is one thing I must disagree with, but you really have to think who is the audience here??? They use music and terrible acting that would be for kids but it markets itself as an adult tv show and it really just makes me question who the audience even is here- I don’t think anybody could enjoy this crap. I think it’s less about politics or any specific political party and more of just poor choices in literally every margin. It’s terrible. The only things scary about this show is the bad acting, the god awful writing, and the terrible interpretations of each monster. I saw what slappy looked like in the trailer and literally started shaking. Not because I was scared however, just because I was so upset with the garbage that is the new interpretation of slappy. Disney does own Hulu, but 100% glad that Disney is letting them do their own thing. Like the movie Prey and shows like The Bear. Disney is just the sponsor and that's it. With only 5 episodes it still to early to tell out of 10 episodes. There might be one episodes that out shines them all.
Love how they said it be funny and entertaining its not the original was. Now riverdale based off archie but least was entertaining and not a complete rip off of something actual good. I watch it and it to much of a mixed between chucky show and riverdale. If you going to remake something it needs to actually be different and good. This not different yet alone good and now the actors in it i liked i now fully dislike!!!!

Sony are the ones who made the show though as they were developing this and honestly Sony hasn't been using Spiderman well in their projects as of late. Disney Plus is merely the distributor of this it seems. Personally I thought the show was just the boring young adult drama stuff I can't get into given it's not interesting characters nor story arcs nor meaningful relationships. It does take way too long to get to the point in some of the episodes where it focuses on either the boring YA story arcs or focuses on events from previous episodes before introducing the next monster in a sense. I loved Haunted Mask with a passion (my favorite of the Goosebumps villains, thanks to the TV show with the four episodes- both two parters), but this mask ain't it. The mask itself looks creepy, but they really could have said it to be one of the Unloved ones (the other masks), and I could maybe deal with that as that's how I kept internalizing it, when the mask had the creepy smile, it looked somewhat better. The gremlin CGI isn't good and I didn't like it though Isabella (the troll girl) was probably the most tolerable of the characters given how much her life sucks to where she reminded me of the Creeped Out episode Kindlesticks girl. The other characters are pretty boring or just plain annoying. Justin Long isn't that great at all, he just felt boring or he kept overacting to where it felt cringe for me. I didn't mind Nora, then again her actress was Susan Heffley in the Diary of the Wimpy Kid trilogy movies (there is no fourth one lol), and she's probably the only parent actually good, as the others just suck ass and play ignorance because good character decisions can only come down to one person. Overall this show is very below average to bad for me, and I watched all 5 episodes in a day and I just felt tired. I may just finish this show, but I'm glad this isn't the only live action Goosebumps we have given we have the old 90's TV show and both movies (yeah I liked both of them). Not sure this one will get Season 2, honestly hoping it doesn't as that means the anthology route may happen if this show ends prematurely.
Sony and Disney agree to release this show as is, man. They’re both to blame lol. And, no, there’s no way this will get a season 2-if they ever made it, it’d totally be out of spite and not because of any form of supposed success, in my opinion 😂
I blame Sony for how they made it. Disney merely distributed it so I don’t have much a reason to blame them. If they were involved in the creation process, then maybe, but they weren’t so I’m not going to go at them for merely being the ones to post this, feels pointless to me. Depends what happens I suppose. If the viewership doesn’t do well, they may axe the show much like Willow was.

Like I told monsterblood, they should've stuck with the vibe they used to give out in the original. Use kids that are 12 and younger like you used to. Don't use college kids. This series is an absolute dumpster fire, based on what I’m seeing every single big Goosebumps fan is hating this.
As a queer person the constant “This character’s personality trait is gay” in these shows really rubs me the wrong way, the teen drama being the core element is a mess, the adaptation of The Haunted Mask is horrendous to me as a fan of that book.
(Also the references to porn and serial killers? Like if you’re going to age up Goosebumps go harder with the scares, not the teen drinking and sexual dialogue)
I’m upset by the fact that Zombie Town did a better job of capturing Stine’s work than this series.
Man, I’m so glad I’m seeing more folks like yourself come out and call it like it is. You know who was a phenomenal gay character, and the writers were smart enough not to make it her personality? Theo from the Haunting of Hill House on Netflix. There’s a humongous difference between a wonderful character like Theo and someone obnoxious and stereotyped as someone like James, whom gets on my last nerve lol. It’s such a disservice to everyone it’s supposedly trying to represent, and it’s exactly why I hate Disney.

100% agree, made it 10 minutes in, and turned it off when I saw it basically was exaclty what i was afraid it would be. Just another example of all the things wrong with "entertainment" made for "modern audiences". Besides the fact that its biggest crime is being incredibly boring and dull to the point of complete uninterest, there is also no actual plot, no story, no character developmemt, just a bunch of things happening with unlikeable, undeveloped characters with tons of leftist woke BS. I agree with what you said regarding the dialoge, I absolutely can't stand the constant millenial/Gen Z quippy joke heavy dialogue, with all those annoying inflections, just everyone in general not talking like actual people talk. And I was just waiting to see how long it would take for the first gay character to appear whose only personality trait would be "I'm gay" and it beat my own expectations with how quickly that happened. Also, I hate how subversive and sexual they had to make it. Either make it in the spirit of the original and be kid friendly, or make it fully for adults and ramp up the horror. Especially as someone with small children, it makes me feel gross to see this advertised as somethint more for children and then to see the amount of sexual or subversive things in it. Typical Disney on that though, i guess.

I can't believe how much potential was wasted, honestly I'm not very surprised as it is Disney. I have only watched one episode but I feel like it has let me down. It feels like goosebumps is the big name they chose but it feels like a teen drama with forced gen z jokes. I like they included the plot and story with the boy dying in the fire so hopefully they can incorporate it into the goosebumps side of things. At the moment feels more like a teen horror drama thing rather than goosebumps

I figured this show would be bad, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how horrible this has been, so far lol. I'm a 90s kid I grew up with goosebumps books and the TV show on fox kids, I'm a big goosebumps fan, I was very optimistic about the new 2023 series and after just finishing it I am very very dissapointed, the budget looks decent the delivery was awful I think fans made films could do a much better job
There’s actually a Haunted Mask short fan film on RUclips (I don’t remember the channel), but I made a video about it years ago. Really solid, and manages to feel like Goosebumps whilst also having an adult, and dark, tone. Sad to see such a high budget be squandered lol
I am sooooo thankful I watched the first episode myself and not with my kids. I had very very low expectations given Disney and Hollywoods track records on reboots. They managed to shoot so far below my expectations it’s disgusting. Im really not trying to be too judgental here.....but why does every paranormal themed show catered to preteens/teenagers have to specifically center around the highschooler only being limited to the kids being in high school in a strange town where bad things start to happen just because kids started making stupid mistakes and/or were trying to fit in by attending some dumb party or pulled some prank? Its just getting so repetitive.
You know what wouldve been an absolutely amazing idea for a Goosebumps series? If the show was about each kid from different books getting stranded in Horrorland! It could've been like that animated series about those teens being stranded on the island trying to survive in Jurassic park, except with monsters instead of dinosaurs. Hell, they couldve made a whole series based on all the "Enter Horrorland" books alone!
Those books had much more excitement and substance than these constantly recycled teen dramas will ever know.

I KNEW this series would SUCK! I knew it, I knew it, I KNEW IT right when the show was first greenlit and announced. I knew there was going to be SJW, political stuff in it, bad scriptwriting, and a veering away from the books. This was a fast cash grab just like every other remake/reboot crap coming out there nowadays. I knew this show wouldn't be anything like Goosebumps. My expectations were very low at the start and the reviews I'm hearing just confirm what I've been thinking and saying. This show won't come back for a 2nd season---mark my word! Stick with the '90s series, it's more faithful to the Goosebumps books and the whole GB universe.

The trailer didn't feel like Goosebumps at all. It's like someone wrote a teen slasher and then got the Goosebumps license so they shoved that in there. Maybe it's decent for what it is, but I wish it were Goosebumps. I wish every episode was it's own story so even if some sucked we'd have a chance that some were quality.

Rewatching this to get out my frustration with this CRAP show. Such a shame that we are going down this route of consistently ruining good shows with CRAP remakes. How easily this could've been made a great show instead of teen drama propaganda. Always optimistic that this era of CRAP filmmaking will be ending soon and entertainment will be made to entertain once again and not educate.
Personally, man, with how these companies are doubling-down on all of their poor choices to craft movies, I don’t think it’s going anywhere. But I also believe that it won’t matter, because audiences have clearly left the building due to all of the lecturing from Hollywood lol
I knew it was going to be generic as soon as I saw the title sequence. It feels like they used the same blueprint as Power Rangers. Make it dark and edgy. It really sucks so bad.
See, I enjoyed the Power Rangers movie you’re referring to, because I love dark and gritty entertainment. Matter of fact, my favorite Goosebumps are the very darkest of the franchise. But this isn’t dark and gritty, at all lol. It’s written and performed like a comedy with horribly generic “spooky” music pinned over it.

I knew watching To Say Cheese and Die that I was 20 minutes into this and the 27 year old teenagers still didn't get to the camera, that this show was in trouble.

Ive just finished the first episode and in a nutshell, the biggest flaws I wanna point out first before I can share atleast some pros is:
Not scary at all, I know I'm asking a lot for that statement, especially it's Goosebumps, but come on, this is like a student's film attempt to atleast terrify you
The teen melodrama just feels forced, atleast I get more enjoyment on the Fear Street Netflix movies as that's honestly where they should belong. lols.
The dialogue sucks
The script sucks
The first episode, the titular camera barely makes a deal. like all what happens with it is like 5 mins just to build with atleast an okay climax in the football and it's ridiculous how we build up 30-35 mins just to get to that point and the first 30 mins of it are just pure I don't give a damn thing about the kids
Now to my positives:
I actually like the beginning, it did reminded me of something in the Goosebumps books as exposition or lore building which is common but what it actually is it's like something from a GB Most Wanted Special Edition
The thing with the ghost boy is actually kind of cool as the villain.
Overall, the first episode is probs like a 1.75 / 5. lols.
I still gotta watch atleast the other episodes and see if theg can atleast be improved or whatever. but if it somehow got worse then damn.
The Haunted Mask has no way they'll make that book no justice, atleast be good!!!

16 mins and 6 ads into the first episode and I still dont know whats going ....i didnt read the book coinciding with the episode (i read others) but i should still know the base plot if im a 1/4 of the way through the it already . I came straight here before i wasted my time.

Forced myself to watch and knew it was going to be bad but wanted to see if I could be wrong. Dialogue is unrealistic and story is unoriginal and the mystique and ominous tone the original series had is gone. It would have been better as an anthology where no one knew each other and Slappy or even Karl from the Chillogy was the host since all stories take place in the same town giving brief commentary in each episode here and there for comedic effect. Sounds better than the Freddy Krueger type storyline they wrote to tie all the stories together.
I still think AI wrote this trash, man. Seems absolutely soulless hahah. Another massive Disney failure.

Just finished binging all 5 of the episodes. Its just very mediocre teen drama that has almost nothing to do with goosebumps. I had to remind myself watching all the parent divorce scenes and other irrelevant things that, yep im watching show based on goosebumps. I cant say im disappointed since i went in knowing its not gonna be related to the books, but i wish it was just more enjoyable. Who knows, maybe the next 5 episodes can actually focus on the monsters and stuff instead of drama between characters i dont care much about. You can see the effort they put into including people from every ethnicity and background, and put zero effort in writing actual characters. And why tie every episode to one another? The beauty of goosebumps is stories set in different vibes and atmosphere. If you wanna connect stories to some level, they could at least learn from the horrorland series

I’ve only watched the first episode and I can agree that the show is absolutely god awful just based off first impressions.
I don’t think there’s much politically going on with the show which is one thing I must disagree with, but you really have to think who is the audience here??? They use music and terrible acting that would be for kids but it markets itself as an adult tv show and it really just makes me question who the audience even is here- I don’t think anybody could enjoy this crap. I think it’s less about politics or any specific political party and more of just poor choices in literally every margin. It’s terrible.

I agree with you, but I do think it’s very political in nature-specifically with all of the environmental alarmism signs all over the school, and the constant mention of the supposed patriarchy existing lol. But, yeah, it’s extremely boring, they’ve modified the monsters into stuff that I hate, there are no real characters I care about, the music sucks, the theme song sucks, and it just gets worse with every episode I watch lol. At least episode four had a couple of nice things about it, but I event feel like I’m grasping at straws to justify saying I like it more than the first three episodes hahah. Such a bummer.

Disney does own Hulu, but 100% glad that Disney is letting them do their own thing. Like the movie Prey and shows like The Bear. Disney is just the sponsor and that's it. With only 5 episodes it still to early to tell out of 10 episodes. There might be one episodes that out shines them all.

I watch it and it to much of a mixed between chucky show and riverdale. If you going to remake something it needs to actually be different and good. Sony are the ones who made the show though as they were developing this and honestly Sony hasn't been using Spiderman well in their projects as of late. Disney Plus is merely the distributor of this it seems. Personally I thought the show was just the boring young adult drama stuff I can't get into given it's not interesting characters nor story arcs nor meaningful relationships. It does take way too long to get to the point in some of the episodes where it focuses on either the boring YA story arcs or focuses on events from previous episodes before introducing the next monster in a sense. I loved Haunted Mask with a passion (my favorite of the Goosebumps villains, thanks to the TV show with the four episodes- both two parters), but this mask ain't it. The mask itself looks creepy, but they really could have said it to be one of the Unloved ones (the other masks), and I could maybe deal with that as that's how I kept internalizing it, when the mask had the creepy smile, it looked somewhat better. The gremlin CGI isn't good and I didn't like it though Isabella (the troll girl) was probably the most tolerable of the characters given how much her life sucks to where she reminded me of the Creeped Out episode Kindlesticks girl. The other characters are pretty boring or just plain annoying. Justin Long isn't that great at all, he just felt boring or he kept overacting to where it felt cringe for me. I didn't mind Nora, then again her actress was Susan Heffley in the Diary of the Wimpy Kid trilogy movies (there is no fourth one lol), and she's probably the only parent actually good, as the others just suck ass and play ignorance because good character decisions can only come down to one person. Overall this show is very below average to bad for me, and I watched all 5 episodes in a day and I just felt tired. I may just finish this show, but I'm glad this isn't the only live action Goosebumps we have given we have the old 90's TV show and both movies (yeah I liked both of them). Not sure this one will get Season 2, honestly hoping it doesn't as that means the anthology route may happen if this show ends prematurely.
