  • Today at Ugly Truck, the saga of the 1978 K5 Blazer continues. What we hoped would be a simple tune up for this old squarebody has turned into pulling a cylinder head. We're starting to think this thing is cursed! But we're determined to get this small block 350 running and back on the road.
    We're a little short on time, so let's see how fast we can get this cylinder head off and find the source of this misfire. We start by unhooking the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold, draining the radiator, and then start working under the hood. We remove the valve cover and get all of the rockers and pushrods out of the way, and pull the exhaust manifold off of the head. At this point, we can take the ground strap off the back, pull the distributor out, loosen the intake manifold, and we're ready to yank the cylinder head. Easy sleazy!
    Turns out, the source of the misfire wasn't a burnt valve, but a bent valve! Normally there is plenty of clearance between the valve and piston on a stock SBC, and with no signs of debris or foreign material, this leads us to believe that someone got a little carried away when they were setting valve lash. No matter the cause, we're happy to replace the valve and give this Blazer the second chance it deserves!

      Yes Vice Grip Garage, we are very familiar with their channel. It's a big part of the reason we started doing videos. As far as parts go, I learned a long time ago to not keep old parts around. It's starts looking like a salvage yard very quickly. What you're looking for shouldn't be too difficult to find. Sorry to not be any help there. We are working on some new videos like crazy. Hope you enjoy them. Thanks for watching.

      If it's leaking oil, it has oil! 😂 It definitely needs some detailing, but it's been a fun project. Thanks for watching!

    Could the valve have been stuck open and on the initial turning of the motor it was bent or was there no sign of rust

    • @UglyTruckExperience
      @UglyTruckExperience  2 года назад

      No sign of rust or foreign material anywhere. Even if the valve had stuck in it's full open position, it still shouldn't contact the piston on a stock motor. The valve would have to have been open more than the normal position. This Blazer has definitely been an interesting project!

    Am I the only one thinking it would have been better if you would have just pulled the intake AND the other head? recondition both for a top end rebuild, then reinstall rather than going through all the motions of doing just 1 head, gambling on just reconditioning that one head when the other with as many miles just being fine and trustworthy? better to get both while you are at it, right?

      Hello Gret. Most of the trucks that we do video on are owned by our customers so we don't really get to do what we want some times. Even though, theres not really much need to take that other head off since it was fine on compression check. If I wanted to put new valve seals in I could do that with the head installed. This is just an attempt to get it running nicely staying in the budget that we are given. Thanks for watching. Jerry and Emily
