  • We look at our new Camaro to see if the engine is dead. We find low oil pressure. We find loose rocker arms on a soild lifter cam. We find low compression on a cylinder. We show how to drill down and find the culprit of poor performance. We check the oil for gas. We find gas running down the intake runners.

Great episode. Compression test are good but a Cylinder Leak Down Test will tell you even more on the engines condition

We have a cylinder that is 65. The oil issue mostly stopped us in our tracks as far as making it a runner.

A scope on the ignition would have revealed a lot, in a lot less time. Low oil pressure could be a sticky bypass on the pump. Maybe they said, but I would be interested in the warm engine oil pressure, and how high it came up revving the engine a little. 15psi cold is kinda low though. 10psi for every 1000 rpm is plenty.

@@AutoRestoMod yeah, that's not good. I haven't checked yet, but I'm hoping there's some follow up videos on this engine. Wondering why 160psi wasn't firing, unless it was a bad plug or wire. Loose plugs is a bad ground though.

I was always under the impression that you only need 10psi of oil pressure for every thousand rpm...

Using an infrared thermometer to check which headers are cold is something I never would have thought of, and a very good idea

I'd love to work on one of these Jeff. 1970 - The last of the muscle cars until modern days...1971 and they all changed. 1970 Power output was 300 hp (220 kW) SAE and 380 lb⋅ft (515 N⋅m) torque. Compression ratio was 10.25:1. The compression ratio of the L48 was lowered to 8.5:1 in 1971 dropping horsepower dramatically -270 or less and it all went downhill from there

Please tell me the proper sparkplug gap for a 1969 Chevrolet 307 engine.

  • @flinch622

All in all... it's worse than you thought. #4 being that loose makes me think a plunger is stuck and its time to dissasemble/clean lifters - if you're lucky, it's just a sludgefest that didn't starve the bottom end too much. Pull all the rocker arms and inspect the underside while you're at it, then maybe check oil pressure just one more time before pulling the motor and going deeper.

We figured out the issue. We'll be rebuilding that engine.

Hello again guys, excuse me I have questions different from this subject of the video
Talking about PCV valves, the hose from this valve MUST go: be connected to the carburetor or can be to the air filter assembly? Do you have a video about PCV valves?
Regarding it, is or isn´t advisable/ proper to connect directly to the intake manifold?
I´ll wait your kind response, FRR

good video. why did you show the compression of cylinder 2 and not cylinder 4? What was the low compression reading on #4?

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  7 лет назад

The complete lineup was: 1-150, 2-160, 3-65, 4-220, 5-(not tested), 6-(not tested), 7-150, 8-160. We didn't test 5 and 6 since 3 was so low and oil pressure was weak. Six and five are a pain with the headers.

    • @axleech

Wow, 220 psi on cylinder #4, what would cause that? Sorry I was confused. The description stated a cylinder with low compression and at the end of the video, Jeff stated cylinder #4 was the problem.

    • @AutoRestoMod

I'd wonder about oiling or a plugged water passage.
