To anybody wanting to do 4k 120fps, try moving the camera reallly slowly, and if you are filming animals tell them to move slowly aswell, then simply play back the video at 4x speed
Hi Danny! I figured out and am sorry to report it's actually a problem with this tutorial! In your tutorial, you demonstrate setting things up and storing whilst in M (Manual) mode. However - this doesn't work when recalling the memory for video, because the camera needs to be in Video mode when storing the setting, otherwise the camera will ask you to switch to video mode in order to start recording - as the preset stored in 1/2 will be for M (manual - photography only). Setting the dial to Video mode when storing the Memory is essential - at least on the Sony a6500 - the only test model I have.
@KC_ink_addict I am having this very issue right now with my a6500. So do I put my camera in movie mode first, then go through the settings and then save those settings to either 1 or 2? Once saved, when you turn the dial to either 1 or 2 are you able to then shoot video with your saved settings?
What causes this is actually to do with another setting. On page 8 of the cog menu icon (on Sony a6300 at least) there is the 'MOVIE Button' option, which can be set to 'Always' or 'Movie Mode Only': this controls whether movies can be recorded in modes (set from the mode dial) other than the movie mode. I believe by default it is set to 'Movie Mode Only', thus causing the 'Invalid in this mode. Available in movie mode.' message for recalled memory settings that were set in the manual mode. There are other disadvantages to setting your memory from the manual mode though, like the 4:3 frame switching to 16:9 once the record button is pressed.
For me personally it is better to switch between the modes by hitting Fn key, and then scrolling from one shooting mode (set in custom keys) to other, so all the settings (PP, iso, wb.. everything) remain the same (except minimum shutter speed of 1/120 in ntsc or 1/100 in pal). Plus, you will not make the dial loose that fast or at all with my setup :)
hey could you make a video explaining the best settings for shooting video with this camera? Like what slog is best for etc i would really like to hear your opinion. Thanks!!
hey...nice video. But what about M1 to M4 ? how can we recall this memory setups ? in camera wheel there is "1" and "2" as you described in order to recall our setup like your example, but how we recall M1 to M4 ? thanks
+Bomber Great question. When you turn your mode dial to either 1 or 2, you will see all your stored memory options, just use the directional pad and move to either M1, M2, M3, or M4 and you're all set. Let me know if you need more clarification.
Exactly, I can have 2 presets for stills and 2 for video, that helps a lot since there aren't many buttons due to the small size. I'm glad they dit it :)
Hi, I rented one of this to try out. I have it set at 4k XAVC S, 24p 60m, why are my files showing up as .mp4? Is that how it's suppose to be? Is there some other setting I have to do or do I need something else to convert the files? Thanks
Everything cool and really handy tips but I spotted one sensitive flavour which you didn't mention regarding the 120fps and slow motion. I didn't check all the comments for it but I just buttoned my a6300 and there is an additional setting which I preffer before saving to M1 or M2. In the first camera menu, tab no. 7 last setting, you can select one of the 4 modes but directly in HFR so the video is automatically recorded in slow motion. I preffer this over post-processing the normal rate later. I dont know what is the actual rate but I like the smoothness out of it. Hope this helps lazy ppl like me. Thanks.
Hi mate, Thanks a lot for all the videos & disseminating knowledge. I have a question. Hopefully you’ll answer. I have a7rii & there’s no option of 120fps in the record settings. Does it matter that we can only shoot at 120fps with native lenses only? Currently I’m using samyang 85/1.4 & sigma 30/2.8. Thank you.
Enjoy your channel. Looking to move up from a Olympus tg5 to a Sony 6000 or a6300. Shooting 50/50 photo and video. Any taught on which one might be better for a novice looking to expand my capabilities with my camera?
QUICK QUESTION: when using the a6500 is there any way to see how much storage you have remaining on the SD card?? I've been using the camera for a year but find myself having to insert the card into my laptop to see the remaining space I have which is a bit inconvenient...
MENU -> LAST ICON (The toolbox icon) -> LAST TAB (Setup 7) -> Display Media Info. This will show you how many stills and how much time you can record with your current settings. A bit late but it might helps others, although I don't think anyone else that has the A6500 would run into this problem tbh. And since you are plugging the card into the laptop to see the available space I suggest you just copy the stuff to your laptop so you always have space. NEVER wait for the memory card to be full to import your content to your computer, just do it as soon as you can.
i was lucky to find your chanel , i like it your presentation style it is slow ,steady , like you are not in any hurry , like a sun . i want to know from you that in 2016 will sony release RX100 MARK 5 with pdaf /hybrid autofocus with focose time of 0.05 sec or less with curved Exmor RS sensor and better high fps about 1080p at 980fps with new bionZ x cpu and low heat during 4K because transistor node has reached 11nm which have low TDP . i allready have sony rx100 mark 3 i skipped mark 4 but now i want mark5 , do you know when it will come in 2016 , i have seen canon 80d i did not like it primary due to it does not fit in my pocket , and due to rx100 form factor i can be incognito which i can not be with canot 80d
i have record setting only 50p 50m, 25p 50m, 100p 100m, 100p 60m . there is no 120 fps setting.. s & q record setting only 25p & 100p.. & frame rate 100fps to 1fps can u suggest me plz..
Any idea on how to change the aperture, iso and shutter speed manually on number 1 or number 2 button option which is next to M button. Before it was happening but i dont know what went wrong. If you could direct me with this trouble shoot i would appreciate it.
you already have a lot of praise so its kind of pointless to comment this but thank you so much, it would've been a pain to google this and this really helped
Very interesting. However it does not show how to change between the two modes while shooting. How can I make a video that starts in "standard" motion and change it to HFR in the middle of the action and then go back to standard? is that possible or should I shoot on HFR and the make that adjustment in post production? thank you.
You can't change the frame rate while recording. You'll have to do it post production as you suggested. So you record at a high frame rate and adjust the frame rate later.
Thanks for this video! I film in night clubs where i switch back and forth all the time. I cant believe i didn't think of this especially coming from canon cameras.
Really liked the video... One function I wanted to add to both Memory #1 and #2 is the remote shutter control option. The option is located in the tool box menu #3. at the bottom. Is there anyway to add that option to my memory recall??? TIA
+Vlad Gedroics I appreciate the compliment. I'm not that great with color grading, but I can do something basic to show some steps I would take, although their are plenty of other veterans out there with better methods.
I am assuming you were randomly changing things to show that you can customize the memory locations and any setting within it - but it may b a little confusing to some why you first choose the focus to MF and then went further into the menu and started changing af settings - would'nt they not work once you set it to manual focus - or did I miss something?
+Jim Robinson The settings were random to a degree in order to show that you can customize each Custom Mode differently. But no, you're right about that part.
Hi Danny, I the beginning of this video you said (Make sure Video mode set to Manual )? are you meant set the dial to M? I followed and checked your steps and I could not get it? what am I missing here? Please advice Thanks
love you your video's. i picked up a a6500 and i love it. Watching this video i have 1 question. if I'm recording a particular scene at regular speed and you want to slow a scene down without interrupting your recording. Can this be done by just switching from mode 1 to mode 2 in your case?
Not that I know of. I do all my slow motion stuff in an editing program like Adobe Premiere Pro. Glad you're enjoying the Sony a6500, make sure to check out my guide if you haven't already on that camera.
Hi camera guy, quick question! If you are recording in 4K and switch to slowmo will the camera keep recording or do you need to re-press rec? In your videos the transitions is very smooth and I was wondering. Thank you, A guy that is about to buy the a6300.
+Tommaso Brugna You have to re-press and record again. I'll explain in a video how I setup the slow motion, but whenever you see a clip incorporate slow motion, it was recorded in 1080p 120fps, I just upscaled to 4k in the video.
+that1cameraguy could you possibly explain your last reply a little bit more? I was wondering the same thing, about switching the dial mid-record and pressing enter etc etc. how exactly did you do it for the manny p. video? it was so smooth. thank you for your help!!!!
Hi and thanx for the video My problem is that when i use these modes i cannot see audio levels untill i hit rec button and after i hit the rec button the camera crops the video. So does anyone know if there is a mode where you can see the same visuals as in movie mode???
I found a solution :D First you have to be in movie mode and make all the custom settings you want, then go to menu and memory and add it to slot 1 or 2 and vola!! Now i have a custom video mode with all the video visuals.
So I did everything you mentioned in this video but when I turn the dial to either 1 or 2 , its telling me I need to be in Movie Mode to access those settings. When I turn the dial to Movie Mode, how do I access the saved settings for 1 and 2? I have the a6500 if it matters.
Easy to follow thank you :) What gives better quality recording in movieHFR mode where it slows it in down in camera or when you record 120fps ans slow it down in post?
awesome man! thanks! ques; what happens if you need to change the middle button to be your video record button? i'm using the a6300 in an underwater housing and need to allocate the middle button to movie mode/recording. thoughts on how to still toggle between 1 and 2 while changing that button?
Yes. I´ve got a Sony a6300 and a RX100 m4. My RX100 has a dedicated place on the upper wheel for HFR. I find it really useful and missed it in my a6300. You solved this problem for me. Thanks again.
Hello. Love your videos and tutorials! To work with 4K or XAVC S HD (both in 25 fps PAL mode) in Adobe Premiere to avoid video lagging it is recommended to downsize/ convert all your clips into MPEG- 2....I have no problem with that, but how do you convert slow mo videos? 100 fps (XAVC S HD)?. E.g. Pavtube Video Converter/others converts into 25 fps ( MPEG-2) only? want give me the option to keep original frame rate, or I'm doing something wrong there? Please help! what's the correct way to do it? what video format you importing into your timeline? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
What are your recommended Black Level, Black Gamma, Color Mode, Saturation, Color Phase, Color Depth and Detail settings? Do you increase the Exposure Comp when shooting on s-log?
Newbie with the 6500, forgive me if this is a silly question, but.... I have been following your instructions and tried to see if I have Slow mo. I don't! I'm in the UK and therefore have the camera on PAL setting. I've watched the play back on the camera, no slow motion. What am I doing wrong?
Auld Reekie Biker set the camera to movie mode rather than "M" when setting memory recall. I had the same issue but setting it to movie fixed it for me, however I am in the US not sure the difference.
if you set your dial 1 and 2 to a specific setting, do you still have the ability to change your shutter speed, white balance, aperture, exct. like you can in manual mode? or do you have to go back and preprogram the dial again?
hi, how did you film from 4k to slowmo without the table of settings showing? bec it tends to stop the video recording whenever i try to move to other setting
what's the difference when you set this on (video mode dial) and Manual mode dial? coz i noticed that when i set this on video mode dial then switch to 1/2 dial, it gives a crop or zoomed in. is that right? or both same?
My camera only seems to record slow motion 120fps when it is in the movie setting, not the custom function 2 although the display says it is recording at 120fps. My playback is at normal speed... What gives?! Great videos BTW Thanks!
Mathias(arlsson hey Mathias, I figured this out! Do whatever settings you want in movie mode then set your memory from there. Do not set your memory in M, 1 or 2. Now I have 1 set to 4K and 2 set to 120fps for a fast switch between the two! Finally. Figured it out on my own after trying everything else.
The a6300 REQUIRES a minimum SDHC UHS-1, Class 10, U3, 90MB/s or better read. (Or Sony will not record) Set File format to XAVC 4K Record to 30P 100M (Be prepared for huge battery consumption at full throttle!) :-)
How do you get that smooth transition from normal to slow mo? With your pitcher example, are shifting between 1 and 2 during the pitch? Or is it post editing? I have the a6500 and LOVE it and have learned a ton from your videos. Thanks for your work and please keep going! Mahalo!!
To anybody wanting to do 4k 120fps, try moving the camera reallly slowly, and if you are filming animals tell them to move slowly aswell, then simply play back the video at 4x speed
My sony a6300 cannot do 120p in xavc s hd. It can do up to only 100p in xavc s hd. Is there something wrong with my camera? I'm from india
Hi Danny! I figured out and am sorry to report it's actually a problem with this tutorial! In your tutorial, you demonstrate setting things up and storing whilst in M (Manual) mode. Setting the dial to Video mode when storing the Memory is essential - at least on the Sony a6500 - the only test model I have.
THANK YOU !! I had the same issue and I can confirm that I had to place the dial to movie mode if I wanted the memory settings to save for recording.
I think that is a difference between a6300 and a6500- it works fine for 6300- good job for calling it out for 6500 users tho
Will Goldstone this is confirmed that the a6500 memory recall differs in this way. So his tutorial is accurate to model number.
@KC_ink_addict I am having this very issue right now with my a6500. So do I put my camera in movie mode first, then go through the settings and then save those settings to either 1 or 2? Once saved, when you turn the dial to either 1 or 2 are you able to then shoot video with your saved settings?

Thank you. This is the only video on RUclips that clearly explains how this is done. You just saved me a lot of time. :)
Thank you. I shoot every day and always switching between slow mo and 1080p 24fps you have made my life a lot easier, thanks
Glad it helped.
I'm over here thinking you found a way to record 4K 120fps lol. Great video tho haha
Sorry about that, haha.
that1cameraguy click bait😏
Yeah he fooled me too 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
just like me, i thought a6300 can shooting 4k 120fps with trick LOL
Yes, me too. The title is a perfect click bait. Deliberately or accidentally, don't know.
I've been looking for a way to quickly switch shoot modes for a while now.. you've just saved me a lot of time, thanks!
Glad it helped you out.
one of the smoothest tutorials i’ve ever watched great work man
Can you change iso, shutter speed and white balance in m1 and m2?

Thanks
Hi! Any chance you could explain how this is done, please? Thanks!
How do you set up manual exposure in the various 1 & 2 modes? My camera keeps auto adjusting
Hey, did you find an answer ?
Try go to M mode first?
If you set & save the settings you want in m mode, the custom mode you saved it to will also be manual.
hey could you make a video explaining the best settings for shooting video with this camera? Like what slog is best for etc i would really like to hear your opinion. Thanks!!
+iRepGuam thanks 👌
why am I watching this I don't even have a a6300
Dream big
same with me, i dont have a6300, but i have already click like button, incase someday i can afford that camera
I have an A7r I. This worked perfect for me! Thx!
wtf. same here
AHAHHAH
great vid. can you toggle between 4k and 120fps when the video is already recording?
No you cant
It was really helpful ... I just picked up a 6500 ... iam new to video shooting but hungry for learning
When recording HFR footage, are you using UHS-II SD cards?
hey...nice video. But what about M1 to M4 ? how can we recall this memory setups ? in camera wheel there is "1" and "2" as you described in order to recall our setup like your example, but how we recall M1 to M4 ? thanks
you go to either 1 or 2 and instead of just pressing enter, you first go left/right (on the wheel) to choose one of the four Ms and then press enter.
Thx. Can I assign all these to buttons c1 or c2?
Hi there! How do you delete a memory recall that you have inputted?
Hey how do you go from live speed to slow mo in the same video. Like that pitcher on 0:10 ? Is that done in the post edit
I do it in post. I have a video on it if you haven't figured it out yet.
Suggest a RE-DO with the 6500
Great video! Can I ask how doy you recall memory modes 3 and 4 since they're not on the wheel? Thanks!
+Bomber Great question. When you turn your mode dial to either 1 or 2, you will see all your stored memory options, just use the directional pad and move to either M1, M2, M3, or M4 and you're all set. Let me know if you need more clarification.
Perfect, I didn't know it has 4 MR modes, that makes me happy thank you very much :)
Yeah, it's so helpful, especially for this little camera.
Thanks
mp4 is the file format they come out as.
Try to disable dual recording
Everything cool and really handy tips but I spotted one sensitive flavour which you didn't mention regarding the 120fps and slow motion. How do you set up manual exposure in the various 1 & 2 modes ?
If you set & save the settings you want in m mode, the custom mode you saved it to will also be manual.
Didn't even realize I needed this. Thank you.
Thank you.
Try setting your camera to ntsc mode
Enjoy your channel. Looking to move up from a Olympus tg5 to a Sony 6000 or a6300. Shooting 50/50 photo and video. Any taught on which one might be better for a novice looking to expand my capabilities with my camera?

+Daren Valentine Awesome, hopefully it worked out.
What lense you used bro
Good job. More a6300 video please thanks
I have a gimbal now. should i turn steady shot on or can they work together some how.
i was lucky to find your chanel , i like it your presentation style it is slow ,steady , like you are not in any hurry , like a sun . i want to know from you that in 2016 will sony release RX100 MARK 5 with pdaf /hybrid autofocus with focose time of 0.05 sec or less with curved Exmor RS sensor and better high fps about 1080p at 980fps with new bionZ x cpu and low heat during 4K because transistor node has reached 11nm which have low TDP . i allready have sony rx100 mark 3 i skipped mark 4 but now i want mark5 , do you know when it will come in 2016 , i have seen canon 80d i did not like it primary due to it does not fit in my pocket , and due to rx100 form factor i can be incognito which i can not be with canot 80d

i have record setting only 50p 50m, 25p 50m, 100p 100m, 100p 60m . there is no 120 fps setting..
s & q record setting only 25p & 100p.. & frame rate 100fps to 1fps
can u suggest me plz..
rhishikesh deshmukh you have to change the setting from pal to ntsc
hey thanks man
G
Hello, nice video, how you have upscaled 1080/120p up to 4k in premiere? there is no quality lost?
There is going to be quality lost.
Do u think the Sony is good for shooting football or lacrosse?
Any idea on how to change the aperture, iso and shutter speed manually on number 1 or number 2 button option which is next to M button.
Before it was happening but i dont know what went wrong. If you could direct me with this trouble shoot i would appreciate it.
you already have a lot of praise so its kind of pointless to comment this but thank you so much, it would've been a pain to google this and this really helped
I can see only 25p 100M and 25p 60M on my a6300, in your video I can see many frame rates like 24fps, please help
Your camera is set to pal mode. You have to set it to ntsc to get 24, 30, 60 & 120 fps.
is there a way to keep these settings after switching out the battery? have to redo it every time
Very interesting. However it does not show how to change between the two modes while shooting. Nice, fast, informative, and helpful video.
thanks.
Hi. could you include to your "to do list" coloring lesson? BTW your channel is very informative and good-looking
+Vlad Gedroics I appreciate the compliment. I'm not that great with color grading, but I can do something basic to show some steps I would take, although their are plenty of other veterans out there with better methods.
Can you please do a Video with recommended settings when shooting in PAL - we have much less alternatives
Is there a way to disable the NTSC startup message when using 120 FPS?
Can anybody tell me how to Magnify for Manual focus in Video mode ?
This is what i am looking for too!
You can customize your C1 button for focus magnifier
Can you still change settings from a Memory profile? (For example you went to 120fps and wanted to adjust Aperture / Shutter speed?)
Could you please tell me, whats the crop factor and resolution for 120p videos ?
1.9x based on full-frame its 1080p
@DJGIARDINZ3 there is an additional crop in 120 fps, so 1.5x for Aps-C -> FF and an additional 0.4 magnification when shooting 120 fps.
Can you share how you record the Camera's on-screen menu, please?
Hi Danny,
I the beginning of this video you said (Make sure Video mode set to Manual )? are you meant set the dial to M?
I followed and checked your steps and I could not get it?
what am I missing here? Please advice Thanks
Sorry for the typo I mean ( In ) the beginning

what should be your setting in sequence to edit the slow motion footage, if you shoot at 250fps at 120p
thank you! that's what I was waiting for, I just subscribed.
+jorge diaz Glad it was helpful, thanks!
+that1cameraguy
of course I just bought the alpha 6300 and I want to able to customize it to my needs.
Thanks again,
greetings from Dallas.
please talk about aspect ratio ,,, thanks a lot for your videos , god bless you
Hi camera guy, quick question!
If you are recording in 4K and switch to slowmo will the camera keep recording or do you need to re-press rec?
In your videos the transitions is very smooth and I was wondering.
Thank you,
A guy that is about to buy the a6300.
That's a good question. I think the clips with slomo are all 1080p. It'd be great if that were the case though👍
Well done. Excellent explanation.
So if I have custom button settings for 1, and want to have separate custom button settings for 2... that's not possible is it?
Cool! This is great help! Very handy especially when you have other preferred frame rates.
great informative video . thank you !
Hi and thanx for the video
My problem is that when i use these modes i cannot see audio levels untill i hit rec button and after i hit the rec button the camera crops the video. So does anyone know if there is a mode where you can see the same visuals as in movie mode???

First you have to be in movie mode and make all the custom settings you want, then go to menu and memory and add it to slot 1 or 2 and vola!! Now i have a custom video mode with all the video visuals.
how do you set video mode to manual exposure, sorry just got my a6500 yesterday
So I did everything you mentioned in this video but when I turn the dial to either 1 or 2 , its telling me I need to be in Movie Mode to access those settings. When I turn the dial to Movie Mode, how do I access the saved settings for 1 and 2? I have the a6500 if it matters.
Do you have a similar video for the a6500..
I don't at the moment, although the steps would be the same. I mention it in my a6500 customization where you would access this.
Nice job! Great video!
+Kinster Thanks!
Question.. So why shouldn't I use HFR Manual under the video settings?
Easy to follow thank you :) What gives better quality recording in movieHFR mode where it slows it in down in camera or when you record 120fps ans slow it down in post?
can u make photography setting for a6300?
awesome man! thanks! ques; what happens if you need to change the middle button to be your video record button? i'm using the a6300 in an underwater housing and need to allocate the middle button to movie mode/recording. thoughts on how to still toggle between 1 and 2 while changing that button?
how do u set up the camera in manual to video??
Very useful for me. Thanks a lot.
Glad it helped. Do you have an a6300?
Yes. I´ve got a Sony a6300 and a RX100 m4. My RX100 has a dedicated place on the upper wheel for HFR. I find it really useful and missed it in my a6300. You solved this problem for me. Thanks again.
Nice!
Can you change settings when you are in memory recall ?
Thanks.
just re save the video with the original data in a different format, in our case, mpeg-4
Nice Vid man, does your Sony ever over heat, also can I use a sigma 30mm 1.4 e mount fit on this camera and still get slog do you know haha?
Subscribed! Very Helpful!
Thanks for following.
Another great video thank you!!
Thanks David!
hi, how did you film from 4k to slowmo without the table of settings showing? bec it tends to stop the video recording whenever i try to move to other setting
Gracias, fue de mucha ayuda. 😊 Feliz año🎉
can you do this to the a6000? from 60fps to 30fps?
what's the difference when you set this on (video mode dial) and Manual mode dial? coz i noticed that when i set this on video mode dial then switch to 1/2 dial, it gives a crop or zoomed in. is that right? or both same?
Why did you switched off the steady shot? :)
My camera only seems to record slow motion 120fps when it is in the movie setting, not the custom function 2 although the display says it is recording at 120fps. My playback is at normal speed... What gives?!
Great videos BTW
Thanks!
Have you got any answer to this? Got the same "problem"!
Nothin... I just switch to movie mode and adjust my settings from there. Pain in the butt, but at least it works that way. Kind of a bummer...
I can't seem to find the HFR Settings on the a6500 is it somewhere else or am i just missing it?
This was awesome dude
hey i dot have 120fps setting in my a6500 camera.. ant tips pls
Change your resolution to HD then should see it
Do you know onebody.i want make 120 fps with after effect. I will make later.is that possible
Nice video.
What sd card are you using for 4K recording? Still SanDisk?
The a6300 REQUIRES a minimum SDHC UHS-1, Class 10, U3, 90MB/s or better read.
(Or Sony will not record)
Set File format to XAVC 4K
Record to 30P 100M
(Be prepared for huge battery consumption at full throttle!) :-)
ANY good card is ok for 1080P
I think you can use sandisk SDXC 64GB or 128 GB Class10 80MB/S or higher..
How do you get that smooth transition from normal to slow mo? With your pitcher example, are shifting between 1 and 2 during the pitch? Or is it post editing? I have the a6500 and LOVE it and have learned a ton from your videos. Thanks for your work and please keep going! Mahalo!!
ruclips.net/video/jHNhoV8Au5A/видео.html I do this.
Awesome and mahalo!
That's very useful tip, thanks mate
Glad it helped!
+Akararas you're welcome
what the memory card type you use? i guess u use 128Gb 95mb/s extrem pro, right??
yes, that's right.
I have 64GB 95mb/s sandisk but just read 100p for slowmo 4k just 50p, why?
Great video, really helpful!!!
+SMS Visual Images You're welcome.
thank u for this
No problem. Hopefully it was helpful.
Thanks for the info. I needed to learn how to use the Memory function. Super informative.
+Island Soul Films Glad it helped.
