    This was 10 times more helpful than the Gary Fong tutorial I paid $40 for. In his, he just tells you what you can do with the camera but he doesn't tell you what button he's pressing or where to find anything in menus. So, thank you SO much.

    Thanks a bunch for your video! I could not figure out how to get smooth colors and even panning correctly/smoothly. I did my first video and was very unhappy with the results. I went through all of your settings and it looks A LOT cleaner and more professional now. Not only do your settings help but provides the user with opportunities to learn more about the settings you provided in order to understand better any additional personal tweaks.

    I felt like I was going to be the only one noting that sony should use you for instructional videos, along with best educational video. Your production, timing, information delegation, cine & editing skills are just top notch. Satisfying as well as if I was in high school being taught by an enthusiastic photography teacher who not only enjoys but employs continual top notch education and hands on help as a hobbyist but better. Definitely subscribing, I learned a lot very quickly with this video.

    Thank you Maarten one more question shooting a video at 24p with the reg lens that comes with me sony a 6000 camera which I have I would have to change my shutter speed to 1/50? according to the 180 rule and F stop at 2.8 is this correct settings for shooting a video I want to save a setting for memory recall thank you.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      It's not really a rule, and truly only applies to cameras shooting film with a rotating shutter. Some film makers want to follow that precisely, so always base their shutter speed on the frame rate. For me, the shutter speed should be low enough to provide sufficient motion blur to make action look smooth - I find that's anywhere between 1/30 to 1/60, regardless of the frame rate - although if you're shooting at 60fps and want to slow it down, you'll get better results by shooting at 1/120. There is no relationship to the lens or the f-stop (although clearly, shooting at 1/60 even with ISO 100 may provide challenges in bright conditions, so you'll need an ND filter.

    This is a fantastic tutorial, thank you! My partner was laughing in the background while I watched this - he was waiting for smoke to start coming out my ears!! I will watch again and again, as I've just purchased this camera and still getting used to the menu system - You have provided many useful tips.. As a test, I shot a video today at midday of the waves breaking, and the white water was totally overexposed, losing detail, so I will look at your tips re ISO and white balance etc.. And could I ask, what is the next best option (price wise) for lenses to use for video, if the cine lens is out of reach?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      Thanks, I think. Pretty sure smoke coming out of your ears isn't a good thing? For that kind of over-exposure, you may find some value in using the SLog picture profiles (7, 8, 9). More details here: ruclips.net/video/g5ByPkuhuM4/видео.html. or here: ruclips.net/video/k2ICurq3hso/видео.html
      The 16-70 is workable, the 18-200 is also good (it was the kit lens on the e-mount camcorder series). Or, if you do want (or don't mind) full manual controls, try the Rokinon cine lenses: ruclips.net/video/U55Dzvz9wR4/видео.html

    I'm pretty advanced with the a6300, but your attention to extremely detailed video settings is really inspiring me to dig as deep as you have. I've graduated to a level where I can see myself using custom white balance settings in all scenarios now. Thank you for that professional advice. I didn't realize that you can over-ride brightness/exposure manually - but I never have to by utilizing prime lenses, ISO, and low shutter speeds.
    I stumbled upon this video because I was specifically seeking professional advice on importing XAVCS 4K footage at the highest quality possible without using iMovie anymore. Can you advise me professionally on the BEST methods of importing XAVCS 4K footage on Macs for Adobe Premiere Pro CC, Final Cut PRoX, AND iMovie? (I use all 3)
    I've been using iMovie because it imports the files and turns them into MOV format which is pretty high quality. The two issues are that iMovie libraries are becoming a hassle to manage (especially outside the software itself), AND I have lost imported footage SEVERAL times with iMovie. After I format the SD cards, if the footage isn't in iMovie like it SEEMED to be, then I get extremely frustrated because people pay me to do this work.
    As a professional I can't have iMovie tampering with my fate just because I like to film in XAVCS 4K, S-log3 with sony products. Please oh please reply with some expert advice. This is a very unspoken issue around the internet relating to sony's codec. It seems like everyone just gets by however the wind blows with importing XAVCS 4K. It also seems like many people don't bother using 4K and S-log. I want to learn a professional method of importing XAVCS and stick with it for a while. Thank you again for your knowledge and expertise.
    -Austin

      Thanks for the kind words, and the recognition - always appreciated.
      Have you watched the advanced video? ruclips.net/video/k2ICurq3hso/видео.html
      First, I'd recommend that you choose one NLE and stick with it. Secondly, that you not use your NLE's file system as your backup strategy - I make a copy of the SD card(s) from a shoot in a folder before I do anything. I agree with you about iMovie - but it's not a very capable/professional tool - it just tries too hard to be easy for dummies.
      The best way to import XAVC-S is just to use the File/Import dialog, that will make a transcoded copy for editing. I use FCP X, which finds video files easily. If you are concerned about drive space, you may wish to use "Leave Files in Place" - I do not, drives are cheap. For transcoding use "create optimized media". If your computer isn't fast enough to deal with your files, consider upgrading before using proxy media - I find that more cumbersome.
      There is nothing wrong with Sony's XAVC-S codec - but please remember that these are NOT pro products. The problem is with the bit depth and the data rate. And the problem with the internet is the noise from people who have a lack of understanding of the technology and their tools.
      Why would you use Slog? In general, I avoid even SLog2 unless there's no other way to manage the dynamic range of a scene (i.e. I have no options to better illuminate the subject and the background is over-bright). I find that it over compresses the scene, and with 8 bit, it's hard to retrieve any usable quality, and it requires a lot of unnecessary work. Create your colour profile in camera, which saves a lot of time in post - but be prepared to make small adjustments as required. Color Finale Pro is an excellent utility.
      Hope this helps, happy to continue the conversation.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад +1

      Welcome back. Simple answer - always record and export using the highest possible resolution and data rate. On the A6000 that's XAVC-S, 30p50m (if you're wondering why I don't recommend 60p, it's because the same amount of data (50Mbits/sec) is now being shared over twice as many frames.)

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      There is no "best" setting for stills, it's very dependant on the situation. If you're having trouble, I'd recommend that you use P mode, and study the settings that it's using. However, I would also use AutoISO. Finally, I'd save both RAW and JPEG.

    Hi. Thank you for this video, it's great! Can you explain for me one moment? You recommend to set shutter speed double to fps. P-mode video sets shutter speed higher than double fps. When the weather is sunny and you set fps to 60, shutter to 125 you should set aperture to F29 for not to overexpose. Is that correct? Why not to set shutter to 2000 and aperture to F5? Is "the rule of double fsp" correct for shooting sport, or for action you should use some other settings? Thank you!

      When shooting video exteriors on sunny days always take an ND filter. The 1/60 shutter (which I would use for 24-60fps) captures the right amount of motion blur to make the movement seem fluid. A higher shutter speed results in jerky movement.
