- 😍 I MADE LUTS FOR THIS PICTURE PROFILE! whoismatt.com/luts
I've decided to call this picture profile "MattFlat." Because it rhymes and is fun to say.
Three months ago, I started making wedding cinematography training videos to help others film weddings. It took about a week after uploading my first video for me to discover that there is a massive community of wedding cinematographers out there that want to get better at their craft. As I produce more videos in this series, I find that I am asked even more questions in comments and emails. These messages are added to an ever increasing list of videos that I will be making in the future.
By far though, the most popular question I have received is, "Which picture profile should I use when shooting with my A7Sii?" This is definitely a complicated question due to the sheer depth of the picture profile menu on the A7Sii and FS5, as well as how many differing opinions there are across the many blogs and forums across the Internet. Your train of thought may have been something like mine: "Do I shoot with the new fancy SLOG3? But doesn't that cause noise in the shadows? What about SLOG2 instead? Isn't that going to cause an odd green tint in some images? Maybe one of the Cinegammas then? Aren't those called Hypergammas in the higher end Sony Cameras? Why is everything so different? Am I crazy? Does this even look better?"
I'm excited to say that today I have an answer for you. After extensive testing, and reading throughout the vast corners of the Internet so you don't have to, I have found an ideal picture profile. Please keep in mind that while this may be my favorite picture profile, it doesn't have to be yours. You can have a different opinion from me, and that is alright.
I wanted a picture profile that would suit my needs well. It needed wide dynamic range, a flat image for color grading (but not too flat!), and be versatile for the wide variety of shooting locations I typically go through on a wedding day.
Those needs almost immediately cut SLOG2 and SLOG3, with their minimum ISOs of 1600, and their bright exposure requirements, from my list of options for picture profiles. Incidentally, the 8-bit codec of the A7Sii in SLOG3 can also cause banding in the finer color gradients like blue skies etc. I wanted to avoid this as well.
If you don't feel like watching me ramble in the above video for 6 minutes about picture profiles, here are the settings for my favorite picture profile:
SETTINGS FOR MY FAVORITE PICTURE PROFILE FOR THE SONY A7Sii and FS5
Reset PP8 to default.
Change the Gamut from SLOG3 to CINE4.
That's it! Congratulations, you're now shooting in my favorite picture profile! Leave all the other settings as they are. Go try it out and see how you like it. I'll be making another video soon, showing how I color grade this picture profile.
Special thanks for Marien Breithouwer for originally sharing this picture profile.

HOW TO EXPOSE THIS PICTURE PROFILE:
A lot of the questions I receive on this video are about how to properly expose your videos when shooting with it. I generally keep my exposure between .3 and .7 stops over on the built in exposure meter. I also film with zebras on and set to 100+. If the video looks bright, but it is only saying .7 over and there are no zebras then I know it will look good.
Hope that helps you! :)
Matt WhoisMatt Johnson so after more than a year, you're still using this setting? :)
Do I need to change aperture or shutter speed to achieve this exposure meter reading? I'm having trouble with outdoor filming, too overexposed. Using a Sony a7sii.
Prob need an ND filter
Matt WhoisMatt Johnson Hey can we use two picture profiles in the same video.. For eg. Cine 4 and slog2??
Hi Matt, On editing do you then lower the exposure to what it would have been 0.0 on camera or do you keep footage with that +0.3/0.7 on the edit? My initial guess is that the reason you overexpose to 0.3/0.7 is to capture more detail on the shadows but then you would normaly bring in back to 0.0, is that right?
Man I've been binging on all your vids and on Kraig's vids all week! I'm so thankful for guys like you educating the new and upcoming wedding videographers out there! Keep it up!
+Simply Heavenly Media haha awesome! Glad to help!
This is actually the best general description of Log profiles. I’ve had to find out the hard way about banding and grading artifacts if you don’t use an external recorder.
perfect...exactly what I was looking for!! Thanks man for this great video!
+Stephan Ottow thanks Stephan!
Also a great video! I shoot Cine4 too. Do you underexpose when shooting Cine4? I think Phillip Bloom says that he does that in the A7s seminar.
+Livingroom Gear Demos thanks! I try to shoot in the middle, even a little overexposed. Not near as close to overexposure as when shooting in SLOG3 though.
It's videos like this that makes RUclips great. Getting my A7s II tomorrow and I'll give this a try first thing. Thanks!
Thanks so much! Glad this has helped you!
Thanks for sharing this Matt. I have re-ordered the A6300 and it all have the same profile, so I will look forward to trying this out.
+Royston Kane thanks Royston, best of luck!
what profile do i pick to get a beard like that!
+YoungBlaze Of Chitown hahaha this one definitely 😜
Biggest difficulty is colour grading for me. I find using Slog2 and running film convert is quickest and easiest as it has the slog2 profile all ready to go. very minor tweaking if any after I apply the LUT.
- I try to keep exposure around +1 stop and never had any issues thus far in post.
Waiting for your colour grading video to see which is a faster process while maximizing DR.
thanks for the Vid!
+Jeremy Choy Thanks for sharing Jeremy! I've heard great things about Film Convert but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. It sounds like you have a pretty good system.
+Matt WhoisMatt Johnson I also implement Film Convert and it makes things a breeze. Would be curious to hear your impression of it. With the different film stock and numerous color wheels and level dials, gives you a lot of latitude to make changes.
+Edwin Kosobucki I'll have to try it out! :)
Matt!! You’re Amazing! Always coming back to your videos 🙏🏼
Many thanks Matt! Simple and easy to understand. I really enjoy your conversational style. Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much Chris!
I was watching the philip bloom video about picture profiles for the sony 7sii and he was saying to change the gamma to cine4 too but it was using the PP1 settings.. Do you know what are the differences between PP1 and PP8. As usual, sony menus are so complicated and overwhelming. I like canon UI more
Hey! PP8 uses settings very similar to SLOG3. Check out my A7Sii menu settings videos if you want clearer explanations of the menu options: ruclips.net/video/4EsRBOW_tao/видео.html
Thanks Matt!
Do you still recommend picture profile for sony a7iii in 2020?
Yep! Don't use slog on 8 bit cameras. HLG3 is also good 👍
Your videos on the A7s II have been a life saver. Such a great quick start guide for newcomers.
Thanks Rowan!
This was great, thanks. I guess we humans love to be handed a simple answer on questions. Even if there is many answers in this case its so nice to just be handed one for once
Thanks! :)
The video starts at 03:31
I have watch this video about four times over the last few months and you make me laugh every time bro your sense of humor is on point with the Canon pitchfork brigade. Thanks for taking the time to put this video out there I’m going to try this picture profile on my a 6500 happy new year brother
Hey, Matt! I just got my A6300 and I have enabled this picture profile on my camera and I love it!! Thank you so much for sharing!!
Thanks Adam! Glad you are liking it!
Finally something straightforward that gives flexibility and ultimate quality. Thank you for the simple solution!!
This is EXACTLY what I've been wanting to know! Looking forward to your color grading video. Thank you!
+VindicateMediaLLC Thanks! It's coming! Once I finish this wedding edit. :)
Thanks Matt....another very informative and well done video of yours. I will go and try this profile on my A6300 ,and check results. Thanks again . Cheeerrrsss..!!!
Why are you such a legend?? Absolute hero for these Sony uploads!
Thanks Joe! :D
another thing to note is that if you are mixing it with DJI drone footage you can more easily match the look in post since DJI allows for Cinelike-D shooting
+BigBoyTravel very true!
Thanks! I will definitely try using that profile. Looking forward to seeing your color grading tutorial using this profile.
+Mike Rozman it's coming! :)
Ah! Great vid and setting. Thank you!
Thank you so much. I just bought a used a7sii and this will be a lifesaver :)
Super informative. I'm going to start playing around with this picture profile. Thank you!
Thanks Daniel!
I love love all of your videos. You teach me so much!!!!!!
Going to put this video in my favorite box for later on when I get my Sony a6300. Really informative video, thank you!
+adamstenbergs thanks! Glad to help! :)
Hi Matt! Thanks for sharing, great! Really looking forward to see your color grading video!
+Niels Rameckers thanks Niels!
It's great that you wrote such a detailed description video. I don't understand spoken English but can read. so it's just great.
Thank you!
Your videos are just awesome Matt, big thanks!
+Marcus Zetterblad thanks so much Marcus!
hey matt, thanks for sharing all of these videos . very helfpul . thanks again.keep sharing
Thanks for this, I also use that picture profile based on what I found on the website you listed.
I absolutely can't wait for the next video on how you color grade it, I've been waiting for that specific video from anyone since I started using that profile. Thanks!
+starshipvelcro thanks! For starters, I would check out James Miller's DELUTS here: sellfy.com/p/LAu2/. He has a LUTs pack specifically for the CINE4 picture profile and it is glorious.
+Matt WhoisMatt Johnson Awesome! I think I ran into these before but after having bad luck with some free LUTs I was hesitant to actually spend money on some. I'll give them a try, thanks.
Thanks for these tips. I was looking for a profile with a bit more dynamic range than the standard pp4 that i was using before.
I just got a second hand A7 II, and it's my first experience getting into video and the sony system, coming from Nikon and Fuji for photo specifically.
I have been playing around with some settings, dropping them on the computer and haven't dug the results. I have a big project coming next month so this is exactly what I wanted, a setting suggestion that would allow me to go to different conditions and be able to get going fast making minor adjustments to the exposure, white balance and focus and be done with that.
Thanks, I have graded sony footage in the past so I'm not too worried about the post, but I was worried in the filming stage on how to get a good recording.
Hey Matt, great video as always, How do you handle the white balance for the weddings? do you set it on each scene day/night, indoors/outdoors?
Thanks for this. Just bought my a6300 and start to get in touch with log and gamut all that stuff that I have no previous knowledge and really digging everything i can find. need more short and precise video like this to pick it up.
+Maximilian “Neximilian” Y. Glad it helped you!
You're a legend mate - my 6500 is on its way from Sony and this is just what ive been looking for. Cant wait to try it!!
Got a lot to learn with these Sony profiles, coming from a GH4 hehe.
Thanks Tony! Hope you enjoy it!
So much epic information in 1 single video
I went with PP6 mod you suggested and this did WONDERS for my video shots. BIG thanks.
Awesome! Glad it helped you!
Thank you for sharing this video! By changing the Gamut from SLOG3 to CINE4 in PP8 i got the results I was looking for. Thank you so much.
+Jafi Augusto thanks Jafi! Glad to help!
Thanks for this amazing video, that makes it easy on me :D
And i have a simple question what PP do you prefer for night shooting ?
Thanks
Thank you Matt, great support!
+cannon0815 you're welcome!
Life saver! Thank you.
Matt, thank you very much...that was an great setting after watching your video...I can say now my videos are amazing pro like, I adjusted the color settings making my videos slightly more vivid by adjusting the color setting under PP8...thx
thanks! Glad to help!
Hey.. thanks.. I was aghast by the colours what sony A7III produced. Thanks a ton. And thanks to the person who did this at first. Absolutely clean, No noise. Thanks dude..
enjoying your tutorial vids. .. thanks! I look forward to seeing how you color grade it :)
+Vanessa Laval-Glad thanks Vanessa!
Been using this profile for a few months and I love it. I do find it a bit difficult to grade when using it in certain settings, though this is probably just me. I'd buy the LUTs if I had the cash, but I just wanted to drop in and let you know the profile was exactly what I was looking for.
Glad to help Bill!
Matt, you are good-hearted 😊
Thanks for posting this. Your reasons for not wanting to shoot SLOG aren't that far from those shooting a film. In a sense, much independent filmmaking is like shooting a wedding. Not a lot of light, changing conditions, not much time because no permit, etc... So this is spot on help.
Glad this applies to indie filmmaking too! :)
Very interesting video thanks. Slightly confused Matt, I thought the general recommendation from Sony for the Slog2 curve is an underexposed image, (not an almost overexposed image) having 18% grey sitting at 32% IRE (compared to 42% for a standard rec709 curve), in order to maximize dynamic range. Granted some people (eg. Alister Chapman at xdcam-user) prefer giving it 1 to 2 stops more than that in order to reduce noise in the shadows, especially when using 8 bit cameras like the a7sII.
Nice work mate! I have been looking into the a7sii after selling the c100 for wedding films.
+David Iliyn thanks David! The c100 is a solid camera, I think you'll like the a7sii though.
+David Iliyn thanks David! I'm a big fan of the a7sii in case you couldn't tell.
Thanks so much for this simple trick. With my ZV-1 I can only use the S-Gamut3.Cine color mode in combination with the Cine2 gamma setting. But it is way better than the default PP6 combination “Cine2 gamma + Movie color mode” and even better than the often recommended combination of “Cine2 gamma + Pro color mode”. I watched countless tutorials for hours because I wanted something easy to shoot with (I neither have the time nor the experience for playing around with exposure settings when shooting) and easy to edit (because I don’t have the time to play with color wheels for hours when editing). With the combination of Cine2 gamma + S-Gamut3.Cine color mode I have great dynamic range, but still only need three or four clicks (using manual correction, no LUTs) in DaVinci Resolve to achieve a nice naturally saturated look with perfect skin tones.
Camera arrives today and I shall be shooting exclusively in this profile until such time I become familiar with all of its quirks - which will likely be around 2018 if all the forums are to be believed. Very useful video that confirms what I thought I should be doing.
+onenarrowdoor haha I'm still learning new stuff about this camera!
Thanks for the video! :]
Finally! It's like back in the old fs100/700 days and all the custom PP's that were on the forums. I remember having so much fun playing with other people's settings. People don't realize that you can actually set up some of the other picture profiles to essentially mimic S-Log if you know what you're doing with your Gamma, Knee and Black Level settings, etc., without, as you said, the limitations of using Sony's log profile, the way they've implemented it.
Most assume that the ISO limit is simply because it's the "native" sensitivity level of the sensor, so the D.R. is best there. And originally that was partially true, but what I also think they're trying to do is simulate the "Cine EI (Exposure Index)" mode on the CineAlta cameras, which locks you into the native sensitivity of the camera too (but also limits/opens up more things on the CineAlta cameras as well, which is why I consider it "simulating" the Cine EI mode). It's all with a good heart though, as Sony just wants to give you the best image possible... IF you know what you're doing, and/or are able to deal/work with the limitations for your specific work-flow, which... not everyone knows how, wants to, or is able to deal with, given their specific needs. Your example is a great one and I think speaks for a large amount of shooters; which is why it's good to know how and when to dive into the PP settings and change 'em around a bit.
Know your camera's strengths AND weaknesses, accept and work with them to deliver the best end result possible. Super dooper ultra mega flat video profiles are not always the end all be all ways to shoot. Sure sometimes it is, but just as often, it isn't.
+Mat R thanks a lot Mat! You're totally right. :)
So much well explained 👌🏼👌🏼👍👍🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for the great tutorials Matt. I would be very interested in how you gauge WB on your shoots. I don't shoot weddings, but I do shoot in varied locations and find things like grey cards, colour sheets (and I have an expodisc), to be too much time wasting when my work is so run-and-gun. What's your method?
Awesome videos, I don't even own a A7smk2 lol but I watched the whole video. Looking forward to the grading video and 20stops dynamic range and tacos
+Brandon Haros haha me too!
What picture profile did you use in Iceland landscape? And instead change pp8 to cine 4, setup to cine 2? Would be more flat to pos production. Do you agree?
I use this picture profile for everything including Iceland.
Great info. Thanks Matt! Looking forward to that grading tutorial. :)
+RealWorld Endo thanks!
Matt ... this was freakin' awesome Bro ... thanks so much!!!!
You're most welcome Jason!
Hii Matt again. I also use Cine4 because with this profile i can control iso otherwise with slog-2 min Iso 1600 then lost dept of field.
Awesome! I tried shooting some video with SLOG3 but ended up with alot of noise. I was shooting outside. But let me get this straight ( IM NEW TO THIS :D ) - slog3 gives me the opportunity to color grade more accurate afterwards? or??? If you could explain the abc to it?
Slog3 allows for more dynamic range, so your highlights will not be blown out and your shadows will not be too dark.
AtillaZilla Don't waste your time with log on that camera, looks like shit and you'll never get the colors back right in post. Sure it retains slightly more detail, but at the expense of everything else, most likely due to being 8 bit.
@@ProfoundProductions this is a good piece of info. :)
Great video! As an amateur, I've been using PP5 (Cine1) which seems more manageable to use than S-Log2 which I sometimes struggle with in terms of exposure and often frustrated in post grading. Would you suggest moving to MattFlat? Also, do you have a video tutorial on how to get a proper exposure with MattFlat (or maybe another Cine profile)? Thanks!
Your videos are great Matt! :) thank you
Thanks Muriel!
Matt, I don't even owe a Sony camera (yet), but you are so sympathetic, I just had to subscribe. And what an awesome lamp in the background, by the way! =D
+Lars Jannik haha thanks Lars! Ikea ftw!
Hey Matt. I love all your vídeos dude! Just a little question about the PPF. Do you convert SGammut3Cine to Rec 709 before grading?
What microphone are you using in this video? Sounds good.
+TechMe0ut Sennheiser G3 recording into a Zoom h4n
any tips on exposure and white balance as you hit your various shooting scenarios while using PP8 (cine4)?
Hey! I shoot .3 to .7 overexposed on the built in light meter, nothing crazy. The camera loves light!
You could also use one Manual Setting for the regular settings and 4k 30 fps and have M2 do slow motion so you can switch from slow motion 120 fps to 4K 30 fps just by turning the dial. You dont even have to stop recording at all.
+Xpry That's a valid option too.
Hey Matt I am so glad I found your channel. wow.. So informative and awesome videos...
I've got a question for you. So I recently got a6500. B4 I didnt know anything about color grading and Using LUT and etcs... After watching some videos, I came across your video finally! My question is that is that picture profile works on a6500? and do you use it on picture still and video both?
+man lee hey man! Yes this profile will work for the a6500 too. I use it for video. For stills I shoot raw photos so it doesn't matter what picture profile I use.
You’re a legend! Thank youuuuu
Just to clarify, the minimum ISO to shoot Cine4 with my A7III is 200 or has that changed. Thanks. You're a very good teacher
Not sure if I'll be getting a a7s II soon, but I'll take the taco. Great info!
Thanks Colvin!
Any luts for this profile? I'm losing my find trying to grade some of the shots properly. Mainly skintones.
Thanks a lot!!Useful tips for PP setting.
+NAOUI Mehdi thank you!
Thanks for this info Matt. Just picked up an a7riii for myself and wanted to know if you had any experience with it and if these settings translate over to that model as well?
3 and a half years later, I'm still waiting on the picture profile that makes tacos.
In all seriousness, this was the exact thing I needed to know about PP8 so I could adjust the ISO down from the default minimum of 1600 so I can use it during the day.
Thanks a million!
hlog3 do the same and its even better than his profile and i got great luts for it
Thank You Matt!
Great video! Thanks for the tips.
+Ernie Melendrez thanks Ernie!
I really appreciate what you do.
Thanks Fady!
ill definitely give this one a try, thank you
Thanks! :D
Hey! Thanks for this. I just got the a6300 and am having a hard time with the PP. the slog2 and 3 give me too much noise. This looks good so far
Glad to help!
Tried it on a music video i shot in a studio, came out amazing!
its good not only for outdoor!
Great to hear Guy!
Hi .
If faced help please understand.
I shoot on the A6300 often in XAVC S HD format at 50p50M, Slow-mo is very important!
Noticeable moiré from time to time in hair and clothing (dredging or transfusion)
thank you ^^ I am new using a7s2. I was not sure whether or not i am going to use s log. however it better i am not using it. thank you very much
+신동호 you're welcome!
Love your Vlog!! I learned a lot :)
+yannie sky thanks!
Great work. Keep it up
Thanks Matt - that is really helpful - I'm hunting down a A6300 second hand to go on a Crane Gimbal - the whole picture profile thing was confusing the hell out of me.
Glad that helped you Mark!
Thanks Matt-- super helpful video (along with your 4-part series on the A7Sii). Quick question: this video is nearly 12 months old now (now being early January 2017)-- are you still using this profile? Any profile changes given you've had 15+ months using it?
Thank you! I'm still using and loving this profile, haven't changed a thing.
Hey Matt - Your channel is fantastic! Thanks for posting all this! I'm curious how your thoughts have changed since this video came out. Any update to this recommendation on the A7iii or A7Riii?
Hey thanks! I’m still using this picture profile on the a7iii because I’m usually using an a7sii at the same time. Makes matching colors easy!
Thanks for the tips. I'm shooting with an A7s, and have settled on Cine 4. Just wondered what you think about lowering contrast, saturation and sharpness in camera? I do, but haven't done an A/B test to see if it really helps!
+Gabriel Gilson I would definitely recommend lowering sharpness. In camera sharpness isn't very good. You can always add it back in post.
i use your pic profile settings and highly recommend them. cheers matt
Thanks so much! :D Glad you like them!
Hi Matt, let me thank you first for sharing your videos, so much useful !
I've tested the CINE4 picture profile with my A7Sii, with same settings, but I see too much noise in the darks. Have you experienced that ? so strange to me. Is there any parameter to adjust to make the image less noisy ? Many thanks in advance ! Paolo
I have the same problem but i still don't found a solution :(
I've found your tutorials very helpful Matt. One challenge, whether on the A7sII or III is when you have a client that just wants footage "straight-out-of-the-camera", they're not going to colour grade it or really tweak it at all. Happens more often than you would think. The trouble I have is finding picture profile settings to give a nice, well balanced look, similar to a REC709 that you'd see on the news. Any recommendations or links for settings? Thanks!
Hi Peter! I’m sure you’ve probably gotten your answer already but CINE 4 pp is pretty close to being great right out of camera
@@andrewchetram72cine4 s log 2 ???or no
Another great video/tip. I've started using Cine3 and like it so far, but I'll try this out for sure the next time I shoot.
Have you done a video showing what kind of gear you use? I know you've briefly talked about them in the review videos, so how about one just about the gear and setups you have for the different situations, run and gun outdoors, church ceremony, reception, etc. Camera and lens combinations, audio, sliders, steady cam setup, tripods/monopods, etc. What do you think? Hook us up with the info!
+Khoa Nguyen Thanks Khoa! Those ideas are definitely all on the list. I'm trying to balance my time making videos like this with editing wedding films too. The gear videos will come eventually! :)
Why all my edited PP always resets after changing the Memory Recall?
First edit then save it to memory after that restart cam and you will find pp settengs that u saved
