😍 I MADE LUTS FOR THIS PICTURE PROFILE!: whoismatt.com/luts HOW TO EXPOSE THIS PICTURE PROFILE: A lot of the questions I receive on this video are about how to properly expose your videos when shooting with it. I generally keep my exposure between .3 and .7 stops over on the built in exposure meter. I also film with zebras on and set to 100+. If the video looks bright, but it is only saying .7 over and there are no zebras then I know it will look good. Hope that helps you! :)
Do I need to change aperture or shutter speed to achieve this exposure meter reading? I'm having trouble with outdoor filming, too overexposed. Using a Sony a7sii.
Hi Matt, On editing do you then lower the exposure to what it would have been 0.0 on camera or do you keep footage with that +0.3/0.7 on the edit? My initial guess is that the reason you overexpose to 0.3/0.7 is to capture more detail on the shadows but then you would normaly bring in back to 0.0, is that right?
Biggest difficulty is colour grading for me. I find using Slog2 and running film convert is quickest and easiest as it has the slog2 profile all ready to go. very minor tweaking if any after I apply the LUT. - I try to keep exposure around +1 stop and never had any issues thus far in post. +Jeremy Choy Thanks for sharing Jeremy! I've heard great things about Film Convert but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. It sounds like you have a pretty good system.
+Matt WhoisMatt Johnson I also implement Film Convert and it makes things a breeze. Would be curious to hear your impression of it. With the different film stock and numerous color wheels and level dials, gives you a lot of latitude to make changes.
+Livingroom Gear Demos thanks! I try to shoot in the middle, even a little overexposed. Not near as close to overexposure as when shooting in SLOG3 though.
Man I've been binging on all your vids and on Kraig's vids all week! I'm so thankful for guys like you educating the new and upcoming wedding videographers out there! Keep it up!
I was watching the philip bloom video about picture profiles for the sony 7sii and he was saying to change the gamma to cine4 too but it was using the PP1 settings.. Do you know what are the differences between PP1 and PP8. As usual, sony menus are so complicated and overwhelming. I like canon UI more
Hey! PP8 uses settings very similar to SLOG3. Check out my A7Sii menu settings videos if you want clearer explanations of the menu options: ruclips.net/video/4EsRBOW_tao/видео.html
another thing to note is that if you are mixing it with DJI drone footage you can more easily match the look in post since DJI allows for Cinelike-D shooting
This is actually the best general description of Log profiles. I’ve had to find out the hard way about banding and grading artifacts if you don’t use an external recorder.
I've found your tutorials very helpful Matt. One challenge, whether on the A7sII or III is when you have a client that just wants footage "straight-out-of-the-camera", they're not going to colour grade it or really tweak it at all. Happens more often than you would think. The trouble I have is finding picture profile settings to give a nice, well balanced look, similar to a REC709 that you'd see on the news. Any recommendations or links for settings? Thanks!
Thanks for posting this. Your reasons for not wanting to shoot SLOG aren't that far from those shooting a film. In a sense, much independent filmmaking is like shooting a wedding. Not a lot of light, changing conditions, not much time because no permit, etc... So this is spot on help.
I have watch this video about four times over the last few months and you make me laugh every time bro your sense of humor is on point with the Canon pitchfork brigade. Thanks for taking the time to put this video out there I’m going to try this picture profile on my a 6500 happy new year brother
Thanks for this. Just bought my a6300 and start to get in touch with log and gamut all that stuff that I have no previous knowledge and really digging everything i can find. need more short and precise video like this to pick it up.
Thanks Matt....another very informative and well done video of yours. I will go and try this profile on my A6300 ,and check results. Thanks again . Cheeerrrsss..!!!
Hey Matt! Was curious, are you using the same settings to shoot this video too? Cause this looks impeccable! Could you let me know which camera you have used here along with the settings? That would really really give us all some clarity! Thank you!
@@whoismatt Wow! That's nice to know, Matt. The quality looks impeccable. I love how soft the video looks but still not losing out on the detail. Perfect balance between contrast and creaminess. Would love to learn how you have edited this or to what extent you have edited a video like this to get this kind of output.
Thanks for this, I also use that picture profile based on what I found on the website you listed. I absolutely can't wait for the next video on how you color grade it, I've been waiting for that specific video from anyone since I started using that profile. Thanks!
+starshipvelcro thanks! For starters, I would check out James Miller's DELUTS here: sellfy.com/p/LAu2/. He has a LUTs pack specifically for the CINE4 picture profile and it is glorious.
+Matt WhoisMatt Johnson Awesome! I think I ran into these before but after having bad luck with some free LUTs I was hesitant to actually spend money on some. I'll give them a try, thanks.
can you please explain more about ( detail option ) in picture profile when shooting in 1080p and 4k, what is better ( + or - ) and why, i'm confused in this part
I just got a second hand A7 II, and it's my first experience getting into video and the sony system, coming from Nikon and Fuji for photo specifically. I have been playing around with some settings, dropping them on the computer and haven't dug the results. I have a big project coming next month so this is exactly what I wanted, a setting suggestion that would allow me to go to different conditions and be able to get going fast making minor adjustments to the exposure, white balance and focus and be done with that. Thanks, I have graded sony footage in the past so I'm not too worried about the post, but I was worried in the filming stage on how to get a good recording.
You could also use one Manual Setting for the regular settings and 4k 30 fps and have M2 do slow motion so you can switch from slow motion 120 fps to 4K 30 fps just by turning the dial. You dont even have to stop recording at all.
Awesome! I tried shooting some video with SLOG3 but ended up with alot of noise. I was shooting outside. But let me get this straight ( IM NEW TO THIS :D ) - slog3 gives me the opportunity to color grade more accurate afterwards? or??? If you could explain the abc to it?
AtillaZilla Don't waste your time with log on that camera, looks like shit and you'll never get the colors back right in post. Sure it retains slightly more detail, but at the expense of everything else, most likely due to being 8 bit.
Picture profile off with proper white balance and exposure looks best to me. Being that it's only 8 bit and not raw, good to get everything right in camera.
Dear I regularly watched your tutorial. I used a7s sony mark 2.plz share your pictures profile . You did very fast setting regarding so plz share your setting.
Funny how people love to debate brand tech. Sony, Canon...who cares. Use what works for you...I run A7SII and C100MK2 ... love them both for different reasons. Nice video mate, appreciate it.
Hurry up and get that wedding finished so we can see how to grade with this setup. I have tried it but not found a consistent grade that works well from shot-to-shot. There are so many different LUTS to choose from etc. I bought the ones you suggested for cine4 but the person you got this idea from in the Netherlands really only walks through the best settings for final cut and I am a Premiere user. I like the idea that you said you can expose normally for this and only have to watch your zebras at 100+. For us run and gun guys we need simplicity and this seems to be the closest to that I have seen so far.
Matt, thank you very much...that was an great setting after watching your video...I can say now my videos are amazing pro like, I adjusted the color settings making my videos slightly more vivid by adjusting the color setting under PP8...thx
+Keaton Ward it's all about the people dude. If you get to know the couples, I mean really know them, like they are good friends. The wedding day becomes more like a fun hangout than actual work.
+Matt WhoisMatt Johnson absolutely! Great point. It's good that you like to shoot weddings. I hear a lot of people complain about shooting them even though that is their main gig. If you don't love it, the video won't be as good!
Matt WhoisMatt Johnson I know it's kind of personal, but could you please tell us how much you make so other wedding cinematographers can be aware of the market's price?
This was great, thanks. I guess we humans love to be handed a simple answer on questions. Even if there is many answers in this case its so nice to just be handed one for once
This is great info. Could use your opinion on shutter speed - do you think it matters? Some people say it should be the same or double the frame rate. It would be nice if I could let the shutter speed go up when outdoors in bright light...thanks!
+Josh Landis Haha what Alex said. :) And I try to keep my shutter speed at least double my framerate. Sometimes I go up or down a bit more if I need to tweak the brightness of the image a bit.
Hi, Matt! Are you planning on doing a GH4 review for wedding videography? That would be awesome since you have made an a7s review and they are two great mirrorless cameras for weddings as I've heard.
+BeeTop7 Hey! No plans to do a GH4 review. I feel like there are a lot of other reviews out there as the GH4 is already several years old. I haven't ever used one, but my friends that own one love them. They all say they wish the GH4 was better in lowlight though.
Hi Matt! Apologies if you've answered this in another video recently, but are these still the picture profile settings you would recommend for the A7s ii if you were still shooting with that camera?
Camera arrives today and I shall be shooting exclusively in this profile until such time I become familiar with all of its quirks - which will likely be around 2018 if all the forums are to be believed. Very useful video that confirms what I thought I should be doing.
Finally! It's like back in the old fs100/700 days and all the custom PP's that were on the forums. I remember having so much fun playing with other people's settings. People don't realize that you can actually set up some of the other picture profiles to essentially mimic S-Log if you know what you're doing with your Gamma, Knee and Black Level settings, etc., without, as you said, the limitations of using Sony's log profile, the way they've implemented it. Most assume that the ISO limit is simply because it's the "native" sensitivity level of the sensor, so the D.R. is best there. And originally that was partially true, but what I also think they're trying to do is simulate the "Cine EI (Exposure Index)" mode on the CineAlta cameras, which locks you into the native sensitivity of the camera too (but also limits/opens up more things on the CineAlta cameras as well, which is why I consider it "simulating" the Cine EI mode). It's all with a good heart though, as Sony just wants to give you the best image possible... IF you know what you're doing, and/or are able to deal/work with the limitations for your specific work-flow, which... not everyone knows how, wants to, or is able to deal with, given their specific needs. Your example is a great one and I think speaks for a large amount of shooters; which is why it's good to know how and when to dive into the PP settings and change 'em around a bit. Know your camera's strengths AND weaknesses, accept and work with them to deliver the best end result possible. Super dooper ultra mega flat video profiles are not always the end all be all ways to shoot. Sure sometimes it is, but just as often, it isn't.
¡¡¡Hola, Matt!!!!! ¿Acaso hoy sería PP9= PP8 MattFlatt? Graciassss y no puedo menos que pensar qué haríamos sin estos espacios de intercambio y feedback !!!
Have you tested it with different knee settings? because with Cine4 the knee mode when set to auto, automatically turns off. It says in the manual: "When selecting [Still], [Cine1], [Cine2], [Cine3], [Cine4], [ITU709(800%)], [S-Log2] in [Gamma], [Knee] is set to [Off] if [Mode] is set to [Auto]. To use functions in [Knee], set [Mode] to [Manual]." Setting it to 95% clearly prevents some highlight clipping, without affecting the rest of the image too much. Might be worth looking into.
Matt, I don't even owe a Sony camera (yet), but you are so sympathetic, I just had to subscribe. And what an awesome lamp in the background, by the way! =D
SLOG 2 with S Gamut gives you a lot to work with, as long as you use some sort of LUT. Only got the camera 2 weeks ago so still learning. Thanks for the video.
Then learn your white balance color shift settings. I used to have my original a7S on a permanent red-shift to help with the green tint. However S-Gamut3.Cine, their most recent iteration of this color space, is much, much better, and more accurate. In fact on the a6300 and FS5 I have no green tint issues, out of the box.
+Mat R I shift towards magneta when I had to, however there's just no point in shooting with Sgamut period. There are better choices out there and shifting to correct for green causes another problem all together. You can't correct for one without causing another.
Hi . If faced help please understand. I shoot on the A6300 often in XAVC S HD format at 50p50M, Slow-mo is very important! Noticeable moiré from time to time in hair and clothing (dredging or transfusion)
What picture profile did you use in Iceland landscape? And instead change pp8 to cine 4, setup to cine 2? Would be more flat to pos production. Do you agree?
Thanks so much for this simple trick. With my ZV-1 I can only use the S-Gamut3.Cine color mode in combination with the Cine2 gamma setting. But it is way better than the default PP6 combination “Cine2 gamma + Movie color mode” and even better than the often recommended combination of “Cine2 gamma + Pro color mode”. I watched countless tutorials for hours because I wanted something easy to shoot with (I neither have the time nor the experience for playing around with exposure settings when shooting) and easy to edit (because I don’t have the time to play with color wheels for hours when editing). With the combination of Cine2 gamma + S-Gamut3.Cine color mode I have great dynamic range, but still only need three or four clicks (using manual correction, no LUTs) in DaVinci Resolve to achieve a nice naturally saturated look with perfect skin tones.
Hi Matt 5 years older than at this video. Do you recommend a LUT that can be used with an external monitor that just makes it more pleasant to view during shoots. Kind a correction lut
Another great video/tip. I've started using Cine3 and like it so far, but I'll try this out for sure the next time I shoot. Have you done a video showing what kind of gear you use? I know you've briefly talked about them in the review videos, so how about one just about the gear and setups you have for the different situations, run and gun outdoors, church ceremony, reception, etc. Camera and lens combinations, audio, sliders, steady cam setup, tripods/monopods, etc. What do you think? Hook us up with the info!
+Khoa Nguyen Thanks Khoa! Those ideas are definitely all on the list. I'm trying to balance my time making videos like this with editing wedding films too. The gear videos will come eventually! :)
Hey Matt I am so glad I found your channel. wow.. So informative and awesome videos... I've got a question for you. So I recently got a6500. B4 I didnt know anything about color grading and Using LUT and etcs... After watching some videos, I came across your video finally! My question is that is that picture profile works on a6500? and do you use it on picture still and video both?
+man lee hey man! Yes this profile will work for the a6500 too. I use it for video. For stills I shoot raw photos so it doesn't matter what picture profile I use.
Gerat video! Curious, but you mentioned that you'd create a vid on how you color correct Cine4 footage? which one would that be? (or is that the How to Easily color grade video) Wondering how to best do it using FCPX. thanks
Thanks so much Gary! :) Yes that is the easily color grade video. I don't use FCPX unfortunately, but many of the concepts I talk about in the video apply to both programs.
Thanks man! Love your tuts! And how would you go about setting up for different lighting situations? do you have it set on any type of auto? or are you manually changing settings as you go.. ETTR?
We just got the a6500 at work. What are all the different PP? I understand them in their basic forms, but there are so many. What's best for shooting events with uneven/low lighting?
Matt WhoisMatt Johnson and then this gives you more ability to color correct and stuff in post? That's kind of what I'm figuring out with SLOG or other PP.
Thanks Matt - that is really helpful - I'm hunting down a A6300 second hand to go on a Crane Gimbal - the whole picture profile thing was confusing the hell out of me.

Matt WhoisMatt Johnson Hey can we use two picture profiles in the same video.. For eg. Cine 4 and slog2??
Hi Matt, On editing do you then lower the exposure to what it would have been 0.0 on camera or do you keep footage with that +0.3/0.7 on the edit? My initial guess is that the reason you overexpose to 0.3/0.7 is to capture more detail on the shadows but then you would normaly bring in back to 0.0, is that right?

This is great info. Could use your opinion on shutter speed - do you think it matters? Some people say it should be the same or double the frame rate. It would be nice if I could let the shutter speed go up when outdoors in bright light...thanks!
+Josh Landis
Nd filters are your friend. :)
They all say they wish the GH4 was better in lowlight though.
i use your pic profile settings and highly recommend them. cheers matt
Thanks so much! :D Glad you like them!
Thanks for these tips. I was looking for a profile with a bit more dynamic range than the standard pp4 that i was using before.
Hi Matt! Apologies if you've answered this in another video recently, but are these still the picture profile settings you would recommend for the A7s ii if you were still shooting with that camera?
Your videos are great Matt! :) thank you
Thanks Muriel!
Matt, have you tried HLG and HLG3 ? whats your opinion on those ?
Thanks a lot!!Useful tips for PP setting.
+NAOUI Mehdi thank you!
Thank you so much. I just bought a used a7sii and this will be a lifesaver :)
Thanks for this amazing video, that makes it easy on me :D
And i have a simple question what PP do you prefer for night shooting ?
Thanks
Camera arrives today and I shall be shooting exclusively in this profile until such time I become familiar with all of its quirks - which will likely be around 2018 if all the forums are to be believed. Very useful video that confirms what I thought I should be doing.
+onenarrowdoor haha I'm still learning new stuff about this camera!
Tried it on a music video i shot in a studio, came out amazing!
its good not only for outdoor!
Great to hear Guy!
+Mat R thanks a lot Mat! You're totally right. :)
Just to clarify, the minimum ISO to shoot Cine4 with my A7III is 200 or has that changed. Thanks. You're a very good teacher
To use functions in [Knee], set [Mode] to [Manual]."
Setting it to 95% clearly prevents some highlight clipping, without affecting the rest of the image too much. Might be worth looking into.
Thanks for the tip! I'll try this out. :)
Great video! Thanks for the tips.
+Ernie Melendrez thanks Ernie!
Do you have a video or can you tell me what a similar setting would be if shooting on the A7Rii?
Matt, I don't even owe a Sony camera (yet), but you are so sympathetic, I just had to subscribe. And what an awesome lamp in the background, by the way! =D
+Lars Jannik haha thanks Lars! Ikea ftw!
Great info. Thanks Matt! Looking forward to that grading tutorial. :)
+RealWorld Endo thanks!
Is this still applicable for 2020? For a7c or a7siii?
SLOG 2 with S Gamut gives you a lot to work with, as long as you use some sort of LUT. Only got the camera 2 weeks ago so still learning. Thanks for the video.
+Blue Calm Productions S Gamut is grreeeennnnn.
You can, it's called a multi-matrix adjustment menu, which is not available on the A7sii :-)
Nice work mate! I have been looking into the a7sii after selling the c100 for wedding films.
+David Iliyn thanks David! The c100 is a solid camera, I think you'll like the a7sii though.
+David Iliyn thanks David! I'm a big fan of the a7sii in case you couldn't tell.
I use this picture profile for everything including Iceland.
Thank you for sharing this video! By changing the Gamut from SLOG3 to CINE4 in PP8 i got the results I was looking for. Thank you so much.
+Jafi Augusto thanks Jafi! Glad to help!
Hi Matt 5 years older than at this video. Do you recommend a LUT that can be used with an external monitor that just makes it more pleasant to view during shoots. Kind a correction lut
Matt, Nice and informative. What is your color approach in post with this profile? Are you still using a LUT as a starting point. Thanks!
Thanks! Check my two later videos where I cover color grading this picture profile. :)
Ah! Great vid and setting. Thank you!
Matt ... this was freakin' awesome Bro ... thanks so much!!!!
You're most welcome Jason!
I don't use FCPX unfortunately, but many of the concepts I talk about in the video apply to both programs.
ill definitely give this one a try, thank you
Thanks! :D
Awesome Video Man! Any Suggestions for a similar setup for A7s? Iso in Slog is Crazy!
Hey! Yes, I would use CINE4 with Sgamut and see how you like it.
Thanks man! Love your tuts! And how would you go about setting up for different lighting situations? do you have it set on any type of auto? or are you manually changing settings as you go.. ETTR?
Manually changing settings such as white balance depending on the lighting. ETTR depends entirely on your picture profile.
Have you made a video about colour grading this profile yet?
Here you go: How to EASILY color grade Sony A7Sii, FS5, and a6300 footage using Premiere Pro CC ruclips.net/video/Ndy5xX8dK0Y/видео.html
We just got the a6500 at work. What are all the different PP? I understand them in their basic forms, but there are so many. What's best for shooting events with uneven/low lighting?
+Alex Jenkins hey Alex! The a6500 should have the same picture profile options as the A7sii in this video. I use this picture profile for everything.
Glad that helped you Mark!
Great video. So as I understand, expose not over and not under with Cine4? What metering mode do you use usually?
I usually shoot .3 to .7 overexposed on the on camera metering and it works really well.
