Yesss You Lot. I've literally been hounded for this profile for months so I had to break it down for ya. Let me know if you like it or if you think its pants. Its subjective afterall. Hope everyones looking after themselves in this weird ass time with the Lurgy flying about. Should I make a video about how to make money as a freelancer even if there's an ep*demic like the one going on at the moment? Boooshhhh
Bro DO IT!
James Matthews that could be sick fr!
let’s goo
Yes!!
James Matthews Make the freelancer video!
This man, saved my life. I struggled for months with Slog2 in my A6300, doing heavy color grading and the result was always shitty. I moved to getting the result that I want straight from camera, starting with the profile PP5 and James settings. Oh my god, I dont have words. Just thank you.
It's always a good day when James uploads.
My man 👊🏻
All right, this might make me to switch over from SLog2...
I gotta have to give this a go for my vlogs for sure. Might reduce the work I spend on Color Grading my vids!
Thanks man, appreciate it!
You have A7iii series, I would just use HLG3
@@Vagrant1PSN too much power required from my computer 😑!
@@PeterLindgren1 every time I see someone using SLOG on A7 Series I feel bad. Its just mathematics, 14 stops over 8 Bit is way too stretched. Unless you are going for desaturated look..
@@dathofilms I think I manage to pull off a good look with it though!
@@PeterLindgren1 Sure, "Good" is subjective, I would not argue on that, if you are happy with it :)
you're the best man. Your charisma just makes your videos so watchable aswell
I've been on the "Yessss m8, this is sick" camp for years now. It's been inspiring watching your color grades transform as time goes on, and this recent picture profile you've landed on is no exception!
Myyyyy Guy. Arturo Is a legend
Would be great to see what profile settings you’d do for an HLG
Oh YEahhh really !! can we have the setting u would use for HLG3 if its far better ? :)
Keen as for some HLG settings James if you know them buddy. Keep up the great work. Loving your channel bruv.
So, James, it's been over a year since I started using a variation on this setting for myself, and I can quite confidently say it's one of the best picture profiles I've used. I usually use it on my a6500, as I have different settings for the A7Siii I use.
The adjustments I made was reducing the Colour Phase to +2 (because I prefer a redder/orange tone to my skin tones) and reducing the black level to -1 because I feel it just gives a deeper black tone to my low light shoots.
2 years old and still better than other tutorials on here. You said it best at the beginning mate
The elastic analogy was unbelievably helpful. Cheers legend!
DUDE! I found you today and are now MY. FAVORITE. RUclipsR. INSTANTLY. Keep up the great work and a million thanks for all you do.
Haha amazing! Thanks for checking in Alex, I hope you enjoy the ride :)
Brilliant work as always James! Maybe a video on exposing your image right in a variety of conditions, say some low light ones or when your subject isnt perfectly lit? Would love to see how you adapt to those situations mate!
love your presenting style, what a geezer!
Hey! Great video! Can you tell us what picture profile settings you would use with HLG? Thanks! :)
This came out at the perfect time 🔥🔥🔥
Boom 👊🏻
Been shooting on the A7SII for awhile now and have been using a custom Still Gamma/Pro Color picture profile lately for all my shooting-typically in moderate low light conditions.
After doing a new round of research and consideration, I’m thinking of setting up a 3 picture profile system: Josh Yeo’s extreme low light Still profile, a Cine4 profile based off of Matt Johnson’s for moderate lighting situations, and a slightly tweaked Slog2 profile for bright outdoor shooting.
We’ll see how it works!
I have probably tried them all in the short period of time in have my A7III... and this one actually works for me, especially in post. Saved to memory recall 1 and 2. Thanks James 👍
Yo, I know it's a few years since this video was made, but I happened to run into it this morning, and I have to say, this picture profile (with all your settings) in the a6400 is the best I've used. Crazy good. I generally use SLog2, but it's a pain in the as*, obviously, unless you expose perfectly, for the reasons you mention, meaning 8 bit just isn't flexible enough, and so I tried this today, and damn, this looked better than HLG3, or anything else I've tried, other than SLog 2 in extreme circumstances. Thanks so much for sharing this, it is much appreciated. I'm about to begin a big project, and I was feeling like I needed to get a new camera that was 10 bit to really get what we need, but I think I'll get in there with what I have, and maybe upgrade after the film is done. These settings are the bomb! Thanks again!!
I’m comfortable with my photography at this point and I’m transitioning into shooting more video. I have an A7ii and this video helped SOO much. I can’t wait to go out & shoot to try this picture profile. Thanks James! 🔥🔥🔥
I'm also having a7ii but it doesn't have s-gamut cine3. How did you go around it ?
subscribed because you gave me the answer immediately instead of having to wait. Much appreciated and of course still watched the rest of the video. Big thumbs up!
I was searching for a picture profile setup to use for professional work and I didn't know what to use. I tried hlg3 n it gives so much problems in editing. I tried yours since night n I can say this is what I will use 💪💪💪 however I use Cine2 instead of Cine4 to get better dynamic range. Thanks bro
Sunday’s are my favorite day of the week now because of these consistent uploads. I feel like every vid just gets better and better too even though the previous ones were all sick too!
Random question James: what monitor do you grade on and do you calibrate it? if so what do you use to calibrate it?
Hey bro, I have a really nice Dell Monitor but the colors arent calibrated :( I have to grade my footage on my Razor Blade Stealth as that seems to have much better calibration. A goal for this year is to get a set up optimized for grading!
James Matthews Gotcha! Thanks bro! Appreciate the reply 🙏
Yoooo cine-4 is where it’s at🔥
James I didn't even watch this video yet but I have to say that you are one of my fev RUclipsrs, love your no bullshit attitude. ✌️
Hi James, I have the Sony A7iii, Any chance you can make a video showing how you colour grade the footage using this Picture Profile please? You know your the G man. :)
Thanks mate, for making this more fun this tutorial. I'll definitely try it.
Yes mate you're bang on Re: 8bit vs 10bit vs 12bit. The less bits sampling, the less you can pull or push before you get banding. Combine that with only using a super flat pic profile when you actually NEED it. ie. you have bright highlights next to dark shadows. Otherwise, if you're in a controlled environment (eg. shooting an interview) then you'll get less banding and better image on the picture profile you have to push least
Finally, one of the few helpful RUclips videos about picture profiles.. Thank you James, Thank you 🙏🏼
Excited to play with this Profile!!!
haha def like for the austin powers reference and for not bullshitting till the end to get the info. just for that i made sure to watch the whole video. cheers
that 8 bit band literally snapped so funny
1 minute of video , and im already subscribed. you got something different my bro , keep it!
5:11 WOW. just wow.. what a guy. love it. hahahhahahahaha. Just not phased at all. Keep smashing it man.
Thanks for the picture profile! I can't wait to give it a go!!!
Don't know if you have ever looked at the Leeming Luts James but I have just been playing with them with my G9 and they are awesome! They also do them for Sony and the awesome thing is you can use different profiles and all the colours will match up perfectly. The colours are also literally perfect!
For example I can use Cine D, HLG or V LOG L and they will all match exactly. Its great!
I agree to disagree! I do agree that 8 bit is a bit limiting, and that Cine4 or HLG3 is easy to grade straight out of camera. But you can actually get some really good colours out of Slog2, when you know how to work it.
I shot 100% HLG3 for 1 year, and a couple of months ago I started grading a lot, and switched to Slog2. You can get some siiickness out of it even thought it’s 8bit, just expose for final image:).
Wicked man 👊🏻 Personally I just really don’t like it in 8bit. Glad that some can use it well though 👌🏻
James Matthews For sure man, great video!☝🏼
There’s been so many profiles built around the Cine4 profiles. In the end it’s on the user to customize a profile that works best for them.
Great profile, just need some basic 'How I grade my footage' tutorial now XD. Cheers James!
Thank for sharing. Will it also work exactly as in a6400 6600?
This is Gold!!!! Thanks man, I have been here struggling with slog and 8-bit, I'm giving it up and trying the Cine for a bit. This will save me so much time in post thanks and cheers!
lol at the mini me reference 🤣
You actually pushed me to try it out, and while at it, I've came up to something revolutionary, thanks!! 8Bit isn't really about the pushing colours, even tho you're not far, It's more about the depth and the actual amount of them. The problem with Slog and why is troublesome for sony is because it requires a better and bigger codec, 100MBs is simply not enough. I love the style of your videos!
100Mb/s (12MB/s) isn't enough for 4K RAW but its enough for 1080p 10-BIT and even up to 14-BIT RAW video. Magic Lantern for Canon is evidence in that depending on the Cameras buffer size. Sony Alpha cameras might have large buffers so the interface doesn't need to be that fast for 8-BIT. The a6000 can do 11fps of RAW images (24MB) in burst in which means its buffer has to be at least 100MB-250MB in size. That's a generous buffer so the 100mbps interface is likely not the issue but rather the compression itself. When you stop recording that doesn't mean content isn't still being written to the SD card from the buffer.
HLG3 works good for me i have HLG luts just throw that lut on that and have cinematic dynamic range with great colors and very very good skin tones
Can you share your HLG settings please? I have an a7iii and I want to pimp it out.
Just use default HLG3 with +5 black levels
@@shallyvids9707 What LUTS are you using? I am a wedding videographer trying to simplify my workflow.
what lut do u use??
My shots have a lot of green in it
Really enjoying this Cine4 on the A7 III, cheers mate for the info
Finally some common sense. Everyone shooting these 8bit dslrs like they are shooting Alexas.
Doesn't Alexa bake in a certain look with its profile, particularly with skin tones, and isn't this is the point of using it, kind of like Cine4?
@@fugitivephilo I think hes just mentioning how everyone uses slog 2 or slog 3.
Same here.
Shooting 8 bit and grading the hell of it is not a bright idea.
love the techno with the footage
Been waiting for this for a while! Thanks James!
Ohh feels nice to write in a clean chat! Awesome vid bro
Bit late but this is very useful, been using S Log lately but after trying this method it looks so much better
0:33 So surreal. Incredible!! 🤩
THIS one of the MOST important TUTORIALs / EYE-OPENERs that I was looking for, since a while!
THIS defines realistic people from wannabe-pros. You do not need to use something,
unless you REALLY need it and know what you are doing.
Most of the scenarios, even for musicvideos, short stuff, you do not need S-Logs etc.
I do not need, nor want, to shoot S-Log, just because everyone does it.
I want to EXTRACT what is the BEST from my camera and footage and
not complicate myself needlessly.
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!
P.S. Of course, if you are on a PRO-RES level type of shooting (commercials, etc.) and KNOW / have the gear for what you are doing,
then sure... S-Log makes sense.
Can we see what these settings would be on HLG?
yes please !!
Literally prayed for this video last night and here it is. You're a godsend.
love your channel, advise, and style. Killing it!
Finally!! This video answer my Question at 2020! Thanks
The one I've been waiting for! Bosh!!
subscribed , this is the learning steps im taking to get started in tube
Luke looking majestic in those clips haha. I do agree getting your colors in camera as much as possible helps grading for sure. Solid video as always brother!
Hes a good looking fella aint he
For Sony 6K series Cine4 & S-Gamut3.Cine are the best combination actually. If you want less flat image, you can increase saturation al lot. This is good combination for preserving natural skin tones. But using proper colour card for adjusting image profile is essential.
Awesome video! thank you for the time invested on this and for sharing your knowledge!
In my saved videos before even watching one second. Boooooom. Been waiting.
thanks James, your footage looks really good! specially an 8bit file like the a7s
thanks for share
Um, Thanks so much! I couldn't find a picture profile I liked, I love your style so I hopefully will love this!
Love the Tennis shoot
0:42 Sick jump. Just gave me a mini heart attack.
Gonna have to load this into me camera and have a play!! Looks sick! 🙏
Love the fact that you actually explain the meaning of some of these things for those who don't know! Keep doing what you doing.. first of your vids I've watched, gonna subscribe this was soo good. I hope to stay subscribed.
You are so gnarly dude.. love your channel, thanks for the inspiration bosh!
"should I even do this....?" killed me
Really liked the way you explained this.
Bosh! I think this is your place. Professor colour grade James! Very helpful. I’m going to try this first thing in the morning! Cheers fam!
I enjoyed the video and like that u make things simple and keep focus on creativity 👍👌
Thanks mate... Just tried this settings and it came out great... No more slog for my a6300...
James man, ur intro is always so dan slick!
Thank you so much, best Christmas present ever lol
will try this! :) thanks james your one of my professor in videography! :)
Subscribed- superb video. Currently sniffing around for picture profile inspiration and really enjoyed this
your music is always on point ..
Legend for making this video mate, thank you
Thanks for sharing your picture profile! I might try it out and see how it fits my grading work flow!
Thanks James!!! Will try this out!
Yeah James 😜 great job as allways , allways in the mood for Some sick video’s from you 😅
Thanks a lot Dude... I have Subscribed, I had a shot yesterday and my Shadow was breaking yes.. The Black Jersey on my A7sii with same setting but on my a6300 things was well looking, I believe ur settings might ease my life... hahahaha thanks a lot for the sharing ....
will it work with the a7SIII?
BRUV! I was smashed when you didn’t let loose what cam you’d been matching this to! 2:12 What’s the cam you boshin ova mate??
🔥🔥🔥🎥🎞 Thanks Boi From NY!!!!!!!!
I don't even have a Sony, nor do I do any sort of film-making, but still found this bloody entertaining mate. Legend.
Haha thanks for stopping by my dude :) I appreciate you
as always for the great video and inspiration😍. 💻
BOSH BOSH
Usman Cares bowshhhh 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
Awesome as always James,
Just need to figure out how to achieve this on my iPhone!
This is gold bro . Now I need to work on grading
Agreed. I do the same, try to get it nailed in camera on the A7iii. However, I use HLG or just no profile.
I gotta try these settings tomorrow
Virtual hug brother thanks for making this video 😄🔥
I am completely inspired by u...You are my guru
Sweet!!!! Going to give it a go
absolutely hilarious mate! even if your theory is completely wrong (and I don’t know) I thoroughly enjoyed that! great entertainment!
Thanks bro for this setting, anyway your hairstyle was great.
I almost coughed at Color Phase +6. In my experience, skin on the A7SII is always too red, so what do you do? Make it even more red! I'll have to try and see what happens with this.
Been struggling with S-Log 3, think it requires a bit more know how than I'm currently equipped to deal with, gonna give Cine 4 a go as I love its contrast. Thanks for the video James!
how did it work out??
@@creative_by_nature I shoot S Log 3 nowadays :) more dynamic range, I have a better understanding now of exposure, lighting and white balance - and have purchased some tools like a monitor and gray/white cards to help me more accurately :) just took time and practice !
you should put lights in the back left in the video where there is a model plane and a camera. You should put like orange or whatever color to light them up.
