THIS is like the MOST important TUTORIAL / EYE-OPENER that I was looking for!
THIS defines realistic people from wannabe-pros.
I do not need, nor want, to shoot S-Log, just because everyone does it.
I want to EXTRACT what is the BEST from my camera and footage and
not complicate myself needlessly.
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!
Awesome! Well said. Glad I could help and good luck making awesome content!
Yep, true statement, you are not alone !
Fully agree with what you said at the end. The less distractions the better. Keep up the great content!
just picked up this camera today, found this vid super helpful!
Thanks for this video. As a person who doesn't shoot in any of these formats and remains in Full HD this was very enlightening.
Best explanation of Slog ever !!! thanks dude
Very helpful man. Took a lot from this
Thanks this was useful when trying to form opinions of my own
awesome info!! Thank you!
I wanted to understand the difference between the two and this video was really helpful. Very well explained!
Been toying with this I agree thanks for the video cause now I’m convinced
Awesome info & definitely an easier way to get quality work done
I'M A NEW PHOTOGRAPHER, AND I AM SO GLAD I CAME ACROSS THIS VIDEO.
I LIKE THE WAY YOU THINK.
THANK YOU AND I'LL BE LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR OTHER VIDEOS!
Hey Nicholas, thanks for the compliments and I'm glad I could help!
Great video 👍
thank you 👌
Thank you!!
This is true.
Thanks for your help
Thank you!
Good information. I am actually just starting in this realm of the video and is trying things with youtube. Subscribing to your channel to support.
Bundle of thanks sir... you got me out of a big trouble.. i bought a7sii for online lectures on whiteboard... everybody on youtube advised to record on
s-log2, it was hilarious to see the footage in s-log, because its dull and worst.... i was unable to edit it properly but now i am hopeful.
Thanks a lot again
No problem AD, glad this video was helpful!
Great info! TIL the minimum ISO for my A6400 in SLOG is 500. Thanks.
Totally agreed with u just Slog is a lot of work and headache thanks for your video
Great info
Thank you!🎬
I tried shooting in S-Log for a while when I first got my A7R3. It became a headache as I don't use a monitor and trying to make sure everything was OK via the small LCD was cumbersome. I tend to use Cine4 now, but did have good success with HLG (2, I believe) for a while! Thanks for the video, definitely helpful.
Thanks man for review but i want ask if i but fs5 Sony camera to pp8 slog -3. why the iso is come high and is that make anoise to my video
A bottle of hand sanitizer back in Nov '19... respect
Thanks man
Great Video
I fully agree too !! 👍🏽👍🏽
That's why you use light meters and the prev asst. The only con I can find is the high ISO and the fact that you are shooting with such a broad dynamic range on an 8 bit sensor.
i have a feeling you are exposing your slog wrong - plus a7iii exp 1.7 works well , the only thing i struggle with is the magenta cast on the greys... any help on how to avoid that would be great
ur the man man!!!!!!!
Yes, all this can get overly complicated. Yeah, your video is great. Help me a lot. Thanks.
Totally agree!
You are amazing!
Was very helpful I’m a beginner thank you so much
THANK U
Thanks, I think I am done with S-log.
Is it possible not to color grade in cine4 with the right picture profile settings?
I shoot slog3 all the time, i brought a pack of high quality luts for log3 and it looks amazing, I’ve shot slog for so long that i’ve gotten custom to what my exposer has to look like through zibras and histograms, even on a dim screen, In all reality you can get a log profile to look way better than cine4,
Hello ! Do you record directly on sony A7iii ? or monitor ? You dont have a lot of
colored bangs or artifact cause of 8bits ? Thank you so much ! And do you use Davinci, or premier pro ? Thank you so much and scuse me for my bad english
Gaitet Benjamin hello, Sometimes i record without a monitor, the feature color assist on the sony cameras really help, and just expose a stop or two higher with log 3, and with a monitor i already have luts on monitor........ but to avoid any artifacts the best you can is finding professional luts, you have some luts out there that will turn your footage to look almost perfect, but then you have luts that can turn ur clips bad
@@marcamalia4136 Thank you so much ! Do you have any references, or links to some good luts ? because i already tried, but it was not really... convincing ! héhé thank you
hey! which logs you brought? can u give link?
Hey, thanks for the info. Can you share a link to those LUTs you like? Thanks!
Yep I agree.. My conclusion also.
Good video, Thank you. I have a Question... What ISO do you need for cine4?
The lower the better! But it depends on your camera. Most cameras you want 800 or less. Lots of Sony cameras you can push to 2000 or higher. The higher you go the more grain there will be in the dark areas of the video.
Can you actually do a tutorial on how you set up your cine4? Meaning all the black settings the black levels the kn ee all of those things
Absolutely. I'll try get this out in a few weeks.
Is it out yet?
Elvis Presley never came out
So S-Log has more gain in the sensor (the word you didn't even mention) to record the shadows the other profiles don't record. And that's the reason why ISO appears higher and the dynamic range is larger.
I’ve tried SLog several times and I just don’t care for it. Overexposing by 2 stops sucks and it also effects the AF. I’ve used Cine 4 and use it when I don’t want to grade anything. Now I’m using HLG3 on my a7iii and I’ve had pro colorist praise the flexibility in post. It’s my go to for professional work and Cione 4 with everything else.
So true. My band director used to say don't buy an expensive instrument, just get good, you can do that on a cheap instrument. I've seen video pros who have award winning footage who shoot in PP1. So many more ways to make your footage better.
I read "my banding director"))
For videography gigs in which I don't wanna fuck up I use Cine4, got a BMPCC 4K and shoot short films in BRAW. I don't touch slog lol.
shooting on sony 6400 in Cine 2 at the moment!
are you still shooting in cine2? I wanted to shoot in cine4 but I could only use iso as low as 200 so I switched back .
You have to learn how to light scene and how to expose correctly using s-log.
It is not for run and gun shooting. Of course than there will be noise
I'm so glad I clicked on your thumbnail! I just picked up the sony a6600 and all this talk on slog 2 is giving me a headache.
You convinced me to stay on cine4
Give SLOG a try at least. If you use the free Sony made LUTs you just use it and it already looks very good. Just a little bit of adjustment is needed after applying the LUT.
Agree with you! But if you use the camera for live-streaming ,use cine 4
What's your suggestion if someone has a6100. Which has no picture profiles at all.
Just focus on getting your ISO, aperture, and shutter speed at the best possible settings. The most important thing is getting your picture looking as good as possible in camera before hitting record. PIcture profiles just give you more flexibility when editing but if you get the picture looking awesome in camera than that makes your life way easier and negates any need for additional flexibility in post.
@@Movesmedia thank you
You raise a lot of fair points, but it sounds like maybe you weren't exposing for Slog3 properly? You're supposed to overexpose it and then bring it down in post. That's why Slog appears to have more grain, but in reality it does not.
Do you have any color grading videos?
God I hope not. He's really terrible at it. He completely misunderstand the reason to use slog, the technical aspects of it, and the post processing workflow.
I film in cine4 and edit with davinci´. But i NEVER get beautifull colors.... its depressing
s log 2 base iso is 800 on A7iii or so i thought
2:32 & 3:13 you said you struggled with color grading....then at 5:35 you became a pro?
👁👄👁
When you shot in Slog2 you have to overexpose +2ev. This is why you have a lot of grain in your footage. When you shot in cine 4 you have to expose +0 ev. This is why your footage result more "ready to use"
what if you shoot in Slog3?
@@electronicfellows2113 Slog 3 in 7lll is not a good choice cause 8 bit 420. Better slog 2. Whit A7slll you could go with slog 3
@@giuliocantarellaweddingvid9670 i mean Slog 3 in the upcoming Sony a7IV
If your camera only shoots in 8 bit, there is no point in doing SLOG3. You are much better sticking with SLOG2
@@jaimev.1387 but the a7iv shots in 10bit
a6300 manages slog2 even at iso 10000. but of course dynamic range is worse
You guys know that you have to over expose slog +1-2 stops? Or else you’re not gonna get the best quality out of it.
Also Slog it’s not just reduced contrast and saturation... if you approach it that way, no wonders it looks horrible, you have to change it to rec709.
EXACTLY RIGHT
To each their own
Rec709 washes out the shadows and details
@@audijohns9187 then you’re doing something wrong. Every log profile is being converted to 709 one way or another… only difference is dynamic range, if not you’re presenting a flat unfinished image. You have full control over your shadows.
00:00:20 ... title says 'Shooing' instead of 'Shooting'! 😆(whoops?)
HLG 3 or Cine 4? 🤔
Shadzscape hlg3 is more easier for me
@@AshokTravelVlogs yh I've been experimenting with HLG3 - love the 125 ISO baseline so far 😊
Shadzscape its lot easier to colour grading im looking forward for especially hlg3 luts you could help me out to choose the best lut pack thank you
@@shadzscape why in some of the picture profiles is the iso locked, I'm just starting to start to mess with these, but exposing them iz a pain. I will give what you suggested a shot. Thanks
But your face has some green on it ... is this video was recorded with those settings ?
Rec 709
at first you must to transform color space to rec709 in Davinci! NOT USE LUTS!!!!! Only transform. And last you can color grade your shot
Or just use the gamma assist on the menu to preview what the corrected image will look like..? I swear these people need to know a few things before they make these videos..
1. Grading log footage that was shot on an 8-bit camera is inherently gonna be rough (but great on 10-bit or higher...there are many Sony cameras that shoot at higher bit depths than 8-bit). 2. Your description of how Log works is vague and only partially correct 3. You admit that you're not very good at grading, but then you blame your poor results on the tool ... which is it?
I hear your critique. I guess the message I'm relaying is that if you're not a professional colorist don't just shoot log because it's what the pros do. A lot of people will have better results just getting it right in camera and having less to do in post.
shooing
Given that Most professional TV and film-makers these days seem to think that pro colour grading means turning the cyan and orange levels up to 11... I've seen films where people's teeth and whites of their eyes have had a cyan tinge! ... shooting S-Log and then colour grading seems like a lot of unnecessary hassle; just to make your film look as crappily clichéd as everyone else's.
Expose at +2.0exp for slog. Else it is gonna give you headache
no point shooting log in 8bit
100%. So few people realize that most Sony mirrorless cameras can't do above 8-bit, even via an external output. 8-bit log footage just doesn't grade well, if at all. Consequently the s-log options in most mirrorless cameras is completely useless. (That said, I'm hanging for a7s iii!!!)
no point buying an 8 bit camera
Go for slog 2 for 8bit cameras. You should expose properly for slog.
People doesn´t understand the Log curves.
the story...lol...
Who is here in 2023?
2024 for me lol
just turn on gamma assist display lol
you forgot to tell us how to select cine4 or slog. thumb down
Anything that isn’t SLOG is garbage to my eyes.
both of them look terrible.
If S-Log is a headache to you then you must have not enough skill. You have to learn how to handle S-Log. Don't blame that S-Log is very bad.
Correct, i bought the phantom lut pack and i think my videos look great when i apply them. Don't even have to do much
