Which picture profile should you choose when shooting with Sony's latest cameras like the a7S III, FX3, A1, etc? After extensive testing and research, I have a new favorite picture profile that works perfectly with these new cameras.
But what if you're using a mix of new and old Sony cameras? I have a picture profile recommendation for filmmakers using an a7 III, a6600, a6500, a6400 etc. as well! These two picture profiles should result in your getting beautiful footage with high dynamic range.

Hey Matt! Please, which of the PPs do you recommend for the a7c? Many thanks.
what's about using S-log3 in Sony A7C?
Is it same for Sony ZV-E10?
discount plz ...luts is very expensive
Pro tip, if you use davinci resolve, grading s log 3 is as easy as dropping a color space transform into a node in the color page. Then create serial nodes before the CST to make contrast and brightness adjustments.
Do you still over expose to between 1.7 and 2? Do you have video on how to do this?
@@_bennieboo Yep, you should still over expose slog 3 to about 1.7 stops. I did make a fast video on it ruclips.net/video/A4K8lNsS5Jg/видео.html
have you you used Cine4 as suggested here, because i noticed it doesnt exist in the Gamma Color transform converter
Yes to S-Log 3 exposure vid
Coming soon! :)

You have the best videos on how to set up the sonyA7S iii. Thank you 🙏🏻
When I eventually move up to an FX3 I'll have to circle back here again Matt. You're stuff is always helpful, and looks great.
i got an fx3 but 10 bit is really too heavy for my computer even with an i7 + a 2080ti. Sometimes even using proxies the footage is slow af. So i use the fx3 and shoot 8 bit with 4k 120 fps lol
Thanks for the video Matt! I’m pretty sure we would love to hear more about Slog3 and S-Cinetone particularly how to expose them in various situations etc. 🙏🏽
Thanks! Working on SLOG3 video coming soon :)
Wow! I came across this video at the PERFECT time! Thank you so much and wish me luck in shooting today's wedding!
dude! great video, presented in proper order! i own a73, and i've tried plenty of customized profiles, and the other day reset them all after being frustrated with a few things... the suggestion you give here is pretty fantastic, thank you!
Wow well done Matt, this is so well done and explained carefully. Thank you for your suggestions, will be filming today with your settings!
Hi Matt,
I think the best thing to do to work at a wedding is to choose cinema4, this profile gives a lot of quality, it is more versatile and faster when using it, working with slog3 in this type of work may not work since with this profile you always need to manage the image within specific parameters that sometimes the light conditions do not allow, especially so that the image works well in post-production.
this is great. I'm shooting a wedding w an a7siii and an a7iii later in april. Thanks Matt!
Same! And this is a game changer! Thank you, Matt!
I know this video is old but one thing; 3:50 - you can get great color and no slog blotches and better noise on a7iii with slog3 if you change the color mode to 709 (IUT709). on gamma display assist it will look bad, but once you convert gama to 709 it will look amazing. you don't even need to convert the colors to 709. much less noise, much sharper image, much better colors on 8 bit sony cameras
of all the Sony A7SIII Slog3 tutorials that are available on internet, I like this video very much
Always enjoy your instructional videos! Straight and to the point!
One note for those on the FX3 who have updated to Firmware 2.0 in 2023: PP8 has been removed, and you now can enter true SLog3 by going into a log shooting mode through the menus.
What do you mean by true Slog3?
Essentially, you can create your own picture profile and ensure that it is set to SLog3@@houstonhughes184
Cheers to Matt Johnson! You get us, man! Thank you for the bottom line first, brother. I watched all the way any way because you spit gold and you communicate like best man. Keep up the good work!…
Great stuff, Matt. You always make things clear and are very engaging. I think I'm going to have to break down and give your LUTS a try. Keep up the good work...on your channel and your beard. I'm betting you'll be in a ZZ Top cover band before the decade is out.
Matt, which PP is now PP8 on new fx3 2.0 firmware ???!!!
Yeah I’ve shot a ton with Cine4 and it helps that it already has some contrast baked in to the profile.
Hey, Matt. I'm currently shooting on the a7iii, so will be using the PP8 with cine 4. Quite often I see people recommending using polarising filters to boost the saturation and glow of colours, would you still recommend doing this even while using MattFlat?
Great video Matt! Best method I use when shooting with SLOG-3 on the Sony is to use the Gamma Assist feature. Really helps when determining proper exposure and getting the white balance right. I've also found that the SLOG-3 to Rec 709 Lut in Davinci Resolve works perfect for color grading.
Gamma assist is fantastic!
Beast! Thank you, brother!! Rented the FX3 and will be using my A7RIII as a B cam. Stumbling upon this video really helped me out. Cheers.
Thank you! I still have the a6500 until I can afford a higher end model. I’ve been using cine 4 and I think it does great for what I use it for. Thanks again for the knowledge! Cheers!
Thank you so much for this video Matt! I just got my A7SIII and your videos have been a huge help!
Glad to help Diego!
Because you’ve given the piece of information that I need in the very beginning, I decided to watch the whole video. And it was interesting really. Thanks
Mad helpful. Already loved PP8 on my 6500 but Cine4 is really ideal. Stoked to have it as my B cam with the A7Siii. Thanks Matt!
Glad to help! 😁
Did you use the gamma assist while filming using PP8 Cine4?
How do you Convert Cine4, im looking in Davinci and its no where to be seen in the Gamma section
Cannot thank you enough for this video! Short, sweet and absolutely to the point. My footage already looks better! Thanks again!
You sir! are doing this the right way! Giving the value first and explaining why afterwards.
thank you so much from Colombia, I'm new in the sony world and your videos has been a big tool for me, thank you
Hey Matt - great video mate, really helpful! I just have a quick question - does Mattflat have a native ISO like Slog3 does?
the problem of cine4 is that you have very little room to adjust local light amount (balancing shadows and high lights with the right middle-contrast). Anyway is sad Sony don't provide firmware updates with cinetone to older cameras, it's only software
I don't use cine4 in my A7iii, s-log gets the job done just fine.
@@MaurandisDaRadusFilms 8 bit slog or 10 bit slog?
Awesome, this was perfect for my picture profile research. I'm definitely downloading your luts! Love your bro
Hello Matt, thanks for your video. However, I am afraid your recommandation is a wrong one. I bought a second hand Sony A7SM2 and I am checking how to best use it. If I follow your proposal to change the PP8 profile by moving to Gamma Cine4... well this simply change that profile from a Log profile to a classical profile. That's it. You can confirm this by the fact, on a Log profile, the minimum ISO level is 1600. Here if you change the Gamma profile to Cine 4, you have even access to ISO 100 showing you are no more in Log profile... What set the Log profile is the Gamma you choose, nothing else. PP8 is just a place to memorize your choice, not a place that fixes the Log profile for the camera.
Model was stunning at the end
Matt THIS IS AMAZING. Thank you so much for having us wait to the end of the video lol
thanks Matt, just got my A7s and am literally off to shoot a wedding, so this helped me a lot! I'll buy your LUTS as a thanks
So you’re saying if using both an a7iii and a7siii, set both to cine4? Why not keep the a7siii at slog3 and the a7iii at cine4?
Thank you Matt!! Yes, slog 3 would be great!
I don't usually shoot with it because its seems still a cloudy subject, the ISO 640 and 12800, should I use only in does two options...I felt that I should use only when I would need a better dynamic range otherwise the normal just looks fine....yes all that will be nice to know from you :)
Watch my next video coming soon and it will answer all those questions 😉
Thank you SOOOO much for this Matt. I just got the A7S3 and want to shoot in Slog, but had no idea where to start. Thanks for the overview and insight.
Thanks! My next video will help even more!
Love the video Matt, but as an FX6 user, I was a little disappointed to be led on considering you can't change the picture profile settings in the same way as all of these other cameras as they are all mirrorless cameras and have a different menu and different profiles to my FX6 :( thank you for creating this still though!
Hey! You are correct that the settings may be a bit different, but the FX6 does still film with SLOG3 in CINEI mode and can be matched up to these other cameras. :) So sorry for the confusion!
I'm a big fan! Great work as always. You are a real pleasure to watch. Thank you!
Thank you!
Ever thought to promote this as a great introduction into Sony slog formats? After having toyed with this style I really love using my a6400's along with a74's on this PP, and having also shot a ton of log, I'd say this is an amazing intro to log shooting profiles with overexposure, etc
Just a thought. Thanks for sharing!
Interested in an S-Cinetone vid where you shoot the same subject with cinetone v. mattflat v. 10 bit Slog!
👍👍
Hi Matt, I do know you from premiere and I am not surprised to find myself back on your channel when it comes to the best settings.
I just dig your channel - keep on the great work.
Thanks Oli!
You are amazing on explaining the details! Thank you thank you !! Now i understand the difference between the cameras for mu choice and why 8 bit vs 10 bit etc. I love color grading its the most enjoying thing iknow so thanks!
Thank you ! I have a Sony a6600 , A7iii and the almighty a7siii and I had a hard time choosing what PP to use for the 8 bit cameras. Of course I use S-log3 for a7siii to maximize dynamic range
Unreal...I had watched a few of your videos and thought it would be great if you made a video on this exact topic! I have a couple a7siii's and an A7C. thank you sir! I had considered a different alternative.
Thanks so much for this video! I have a wedding this Saturday with my new A7SIII but I still have A7SII's in the mix, so this was helpful!
Awesome!
Thanks for doing this Matt. What about extreme low light scenes where it isn't possible to over expose? I'm guessing slog 3 wouldn't be the best PP as dynamic range here isn't as important here as keeping noise out of the shadows? What would be the best PP settings to go with for this sort of situation?
go to the second base iso which is like 12,000 something if its a sony a7s iii. then use nd filter if needed
As I am just getting into Sony world now with a A7RIIIa, I've watched your videos over and over again. I know it is not even close to the potential of a 7sIII yet I just tried with sLOG 3 set to (hope this is correct) found Gamma Cine4, as I was looking in Color Mode.. Popped it into Resolve, set the color management to yRGB color managed and set the clip to Sony Slog 3. That is so cool, after I just color corrected a bit with the waveform. Oh I overexposed 0.7 stops. Works so well!
Hello Matt you one of the best that teaches me all the time just that for now i can't afford to buy your lut, but thank you so much for helping us
I know this is an old video but you helped me today🙌🏽🙏🏽Thanks Matt 💪🏽💯
Hey Matt, I have a sony a7 iii, but I found that when using picture profiles the autofocus breaths a lot and struggles to lock on to a subject, etc. By shooring with the picture profile off the autopfacous is much better. This is obviusly a issue as you lose dinamic range. Have you also found this problem and if so any reccomendations?
would love a video about basics & some PRO tips about color correction & color grading from you sir.... 😊
Thanks! Planning on more video about color correction/grading soon
Crystal Clear ! Congrats and thank's for your time !
Thanks Matt Good Information Thankyou so much Love from India
Awesome vid Matt! Cannot wait to use PP8 on my A7iii this weekend!
Love it bro. Straight to the point🤟🏼
I dig the way you explain things man! Thanks!
Thank you! :)
I would LOVE! an in depth video about S-Cinetone. Quick turnaround times are a big deal for my projects and the ability to go without color grading sounds to good to be true
You ate the ZZ Top of Filmmakers!! Thank tou for the content!

Just bought your LUTs! Huge fan. I always struggled with my skin tones. My content is good though 😂 Welcome to check out both and see if there will be an improvement going forward. Happy Easter!
Do you have any samples of just slapping the LUT on and how they look?
I will watch everything S-Log 3 and S-Cinetone that you produce multiple times. I have an a7siii and am just learning how to use them
😂👍
Hi Matt, awesome job! How about slog3 in low light conditions? What ISO do you recommend and not?
Thank you so much Matt, I didn't know about Matt Flat until now. Tried many ways to make the a7C footages match with the FX3 but didn't works out but now I found the way. Thank you Matt.
Did you use lut directly onto matt flat? Does it require conversion lut?
Matty back at it again with destroying my struggles
Haha yessss
Can you talk a bit about PP-OFF - like its settings, comparing quality of PP-OFF footage with PP-1 through PP11, with visual examples ? Thank you
my fx3 does now have PP8 like my a7siii has....so what Picture profile should I shoot in on the FX3 since it don't have PP7,PP8 or PP9
Yes Matt create the video of how to expose Slog3
Working on it
Thanks for the tutorial! I purchased your "who is Matt luts" and they work great. Do you have a video revealing how to colorgrade further after placing this LUT on? Thanks!
Thank you for this Matt! Really appreciate it. For sure do more in depth SLog3 and Cinetone videos! Two things, SLog3 became cumbersome to edit and use during darker reception shots even with good lighting. I also kept needing to adjust exposure constantly to get close to 2.0 MM and sometimes on the quick fly that meant using my shutter for exposure unfortunately. For Cinetone, I was sort of hoping this would be a great overall PP especially for more indoor, event settings. Id probably still grade it a bit, but was curious if it would be better than grading PP0 or even Cine4 (which is what I shoot everything with now). Thanks!
Hopefully my slog3 video will help some with that
@@whoismatt Can't wait!
Im using sony a6400. So i will change the profile to pp8 and cine4? thats all right?
First: this was SO useful, thank you. Second: Cinetone focused video? Oh yes please.
Thanks! Working on that S-cinetone video :)
For night I think PP2 is the way to go. It looks fantastic with not a lot of grading to get it looking oh so good!!!
Yes please do a video on S-Cinetone. Just got the A7IV. SLOG3 seem to be tuff on my laptop. Coming from Sony A6400. Even making proxy playback is still choppy.
Hey Matt, I Love your videos. They are always straight to the point. I would love to see your S-Log 3 Vid. I'm patiently holding on to my Beard for it. Thanks for always keeping it real.
Hi Matt, please do the slog3 video. That would be a plus for sure!
In the works!
Question What if I don't want to use any picture profile at all ? Can I still get great low light performance from the a7siii?
Been waiting for this video!
I got you
Hey Matt! Thanks a bunch for this- long time subscriber of yours here! One question - do you tend to use filters when shooting SLog3? Which ones are your favourite NDs? Cheers! Dom
Attention: DO NOT use s-log 3 with 8bit 4.2.0 capable-only cameras. Use s-log 2 instead. 8bit will not be able to handle the power of s-log 3. Peace.
Learned this the hard way
but how can i setting input or output on Davinci ? thanks
Is it normal that I need a fair amount of ND filtering to use PP8 outside? (F2.8 16mm)
Hi Matt
I'm using an A74 and an FX3 together, PP8 is no longer available on these bodies, have you done a work around video at all? Or have any suggestions?
If 8bit or 10bit would be the case....The possession of Hannah Grace movie was entirely shot by A7sii which is 8bit camera. When I watched the movie on LCD I was amazed to watch the clearity as it was actually looking like shot by cinema camera.
Hello Matt! Great video, really helpful. I was just wondering if you have a video on how to color grade MattFlat 2.0? I only see videos for color grading S-Log 3.
