I'm only 30 min. in, I shoot Canon c-log 2 not Sony, but this is just so epic I had to stop and comment. Just tremendously informative. It's great watching someone who's technical knowledge matches their enthusiasm and presentation skill. Thanks for making this.
Yeah , my film school cinematography only covers angles , lens , movement , and blocking. I learned a lot from this channel knowing how to expose and all of the kind of file and compression for better handling by the editor
For those who can't follow the technospeak, here are Gerald's final recommendations: If you plan to tweak things in post-production use S-Log 3 (43:28) with S-Gamut3 If you want a great video out of the box with minimal tweaking, then use: Cine-2 + Movie Color (47:16) Gerald has bought two Sony A7S IIIs, so I trust his judgment. Superb video!
Gerald ... you rock. I just got my Sony A7S III today and this couldn't have been better timed. Your understanding of the technical side of filmmaking and ability to communicate is top notch. Thanks so much for making this.
I am not even a Sony user; however, I finished the entire video without even noticing. The knowledge and effort put into this video is beyond amazing. Thank you so much.
Answers every question you had and then ones you don't even know you had and leaves you wanting more! Practical knowledge, explained in an intelligible way that just gets to the point without skipping over the parts actually matter. Gerald you are the best!
Wow! Was just ready to delve into this on my new a7S III - saved me a ton of time. After this beast of a video, I think the next episode should deep dive into DIYing a molecular transporter. 👍
🤯 I've been shooting with a Sony A7S for years and didn't know 90% of this stuff. I remember looking it up back when I first got the camera because I tried shooting something in low light in S-Log and the noise and the colors came out terrible. Now I recently upgraded to the A7S III, I took it for a little test run on the town and once again saw some funky looking noise and colors in S-log 3 when I tried to color it in Premiere. I'm gonna have to watch this video over and over until I finally learn how to properly expose my shots. I wish they would've taught me this stuff college. RUclips for the win! Thanks for sharing!
It says a lot about the teacher when he can keep a student interested in a subject their not remotely interested. You do a great job of describing everything in a clear, and easy to understand way. I don't shoot video, or have interest in the a7siii, but Im loving everything about this video for some reason.
SO MANY THINGS! ALL OF THE THINGS! I know so much more now. You are amazing at what you do, and the best at explaining "WHY" things the way they are on top of just telling us HOW. That takes so much more effort, much appreciated.
Watched and edited some footage set in slog2 from the A7III. You have now taught me how to expose using a grey card and now I know about the color transform tool in resolve. This is amazing about to reedit some footage but definitely will be using this for video work in the future. Like i said on twitter , This should be a QR code in the sony manual. Great work sir! Thank you. Best 49 minutes i have spent all day!
I have a confession to make. I have never watched a video longer than 25 minutes on RUclips until this one. Thanks so much for this Gerald. Have to pause and digest each section. So much info!
I LOVE YOU! I've been struggling with this since I got my A7SIII Monday. You made it crystal clear with your tests as always. I learned so much valuable and useable information here. You are a legend!
I don’t own any camera from the Sony system and I don’t plan to and yet here I am, watching geralds video on the a7siii and I’m actually enjoying myself.... this guy has the voice of a damn documentary narrator!
Gerald, thank you for continuing to educate us! I would love it if you would actually make some PDF guides for download that I would actually purchase! Would love to have all this information printed out for reference. Actually I would buy every “guide” you would make and would recommend it as critical reading for all of us filmmakers!
I cannot express my appreciation enough for guys like Gerald Who really make time for creating these in depth tutorials and reviews to help others, it just shows how much he cares to help others then the actual social status of subscriber counts and money.
"*If you expose it correctly" should be the mantra for everyone looking to shoot in any profile but especially S-Log3. Another informative and entertaining video man, your work is greatly appreciated 🙏🏻
Perfect timing! Just received my A7SIII a few days ago. Thanks a lot for this very informative video. And opening line for the next one @ 41:00 : I am Gerald Undone and "I am kind of a pink person."
I have watched this video at least 5 times. Every time I do, I understand a little bit more and learn something new. So I will keep watching this video until I understand every thing he is talking about. It will take a while but I am up to it!
I tried watching this when it came out and had a tough time, but I just played around with a Sony a7 IV and now this video make SO MUCH SENSE. Super helpful, thank you so much for putting in the time to do this, Gerald.
the man, the myth, the legend: Gerald Undone ladies and gentlemen. 🔥 So hype to watch through this now and then all over again when my A7siii actually comes in hahah. Thanks so much for this, man!
Sony really should pay you a significant amount of money for doing this Gerald... Never watched a 40 min tutorial and was almost sad that it came to the end, just like with an exciting book... Excellent tutorial, just like always.... I was shooting HLG for the last year, but as I am working in Resolve with ACES anyway definitely switching to Slog 3... Before HLG I was using SLog2 and it was really that simple - just changed input in ACES to Slog2 and that's it... thanks a bunch man...
Dear Gerald 'Genius' Undone, thanks for making this! Didn't even feel like 49 minutes, and being an amateur, I am definitely gonna have to watch this a couple more times, there's just so much information! Thanks again🙏👊
Currently switching to Sony and received my a7siii two days ago and have been so overwhelmed that I'm kind of regretting it but this has been a major help.
Hey Gerald! I just recently got the a7 iv and was rewatching this video of yours. I think it is one of your best! so much information and told in such a tight articulate way! All your vids are great, but this video is a Masterpiece! Thanks so much for all that you do! Cheers!
How is it possible for someone to dislike this. The sheer amount of effort put into this is just mind blowing. Thanks a lot for such a detailed and thorough explanation Gerald!
Gerald. Thank you so very much for taking the time to provide the world and I with your incredibly well researched testing. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. You’re an amazing teacher & I’ve learnt a ton from you. Even though I need to pause every now and then, rewind and watch your videos again, to try keep up with you 😉 You are making all of us better. Thank you!
Is it weird that if I see a youtube video longer then 20 min I get mad but when I see Undone videos 25+ mins I get excited lol Thanks for the info. My camera is still on the way but I shoot a lot of night and dark scenes and was wondering if I should shoot them with PP off or HLG3 instead of SLOG3 but this helps me choose if I even need to change profiles
rsmith02 I’m already shooting slog2 not trying to go down to cine2 unless it truly has a benefit in low light but this explanation already proves that I should be fine with slog.
@@TheInfluenceStudios As long as you stay in 10-bit, S-log 2 or 3 seem fine if you expose them as Gerald shows here. I think switching between profiles depending on scenes would get confusing when you go to edit them.
rsmith02 yeah I never mix them. If I feel like I need a different profile for the night scenes, then I’ll shoot the whole thing in cine or hlg. But I’m gonna try and shoot everything/most in slog3
This video, first, is an amazing amount of work and value. It’s videos and channels like this that are what’s right with RUclips. Seriously, thank you, Gerald. Second...this particular subject/information is what I always thought was a bummer with Sony. Yes this camera is beyond incredible...but even the most die hard Sony fan would probably admit that if this camera was the exact same but made by Canon we wouldn’t need Gerald to conduct all of these tests and share with us his findings. I shoot Sony right now but I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I miss the days of using C-Log for everything. It’s not Canon’s color that I think is better...it’s the ease of working with the camera to get the best out of it and how easy it is to use multiple different cameras together (except maybe the R6 according to some videos). Anyway, thanks again Gerald for all of the work you put in and value you provide. 🙏🏻 👍🏻🤘🏻
INCREDIBLY useful information!! That was the fastest 49minutes in my life!! I'm not only feeling ready to get the max out of my A7sIII, I now understand so much more about noise, profile behavior!! THANK YOU SO MUUUUUUUCH!!!!

They watch every minute of every video you make and are just really jealous they can’t put out videos of their own and they think a dislike will help. Bless their hearts. All the dislikes after 6 are still fans but just not super fans ya know?
Oh I almost forgot an obligatory comment about how the colour science of my USB web cam from 2009 has far superior colour science than this Sony crap. I’m going to shoot my next film entirely on potatoes from Idaho anyhow. Who needs this biased super helpful information anyways yada yada yada. You know the drill

I've been playing around with my 7siii for a week, trying to sort all this crap out, the whole time thinking "Gerald's going to sort this for me, any day now...", and so he has.
I thought the same for a long time... but once you go all in, and put in the work to learn and get better daily... you will get there sooner than you think!!! Wish you the best of luck!!!
rsmith02 not necessarily. This is the only So y mirrorless camera that shoots in 10 bit. And also the only one with dual native ISO. a lot of these concepts don’t apply to say the a7iii
Great video Gerald...waiting for my A7SIII and I feel that watching this video and some of your others a few times are going to help extremely. Thanks for your enthusiasm, dedication, and hard work.
I just did a night shoot with the a7SIII and one of the biggest things I "learned" was not to shoot SLog for dark scenes as this introduces noise, so instead shoot in a Cine or HLG mode. Your video basically says they are all wrong and shoot Slog3 at night as gammas don't introduce noise (If I'm understanding you correctly). I will trust you over everyone else with no issue.
It just means get the exposure right and keep parts of the image that matter well above the noise floor. It's more intuitive to expose Cine 2 than S-log, so practice if you want to use it.
I sincerely appreciate your time and expertise. It has significantly improved my videography. Picking up an FX3 today... will use the SLOG/CINE settings and see how that goes! Thanks again!
@Gerald Undone Which has better low noise potential, Slog2 or Slog3? Does the maximum value of video output not matter? Slog3 only has 94 while slog2 has 106. I am shooting with a Sony a7iv.
I'm only 30 min. in, I shoot Canon c-log 2 not Sony, but this is just so epic I had to stop and comment. Just tremendously informative. It's great watching someone who's technical knowledge matches their enthusiasm and presentation skill. Thanks for making this.

Came back to this video after getting the FX3 and now I do feel ready to shoot :) Thanks heaps!!!
Gerald Undone... Thank you sir, thank you very much for this masterclass :)
I can’t wait to watch this numerous times to learn how to best utilize my new camera 🙌🏼
I guess this means you don't want my intro??? 🤣🤣🤣 Cool cool cool.
Loool
Haha. I considered it. 😜💜🙏

Thank you so much for your love to details and accuracy! You are really outstanding in this RUclips world!
I knew this was coming and was waiting with bated breath. 🙏🏼
I've been playing around with my 7siii for a week, trying to sort all this crap out, the whole time thinking "Gerald's going to sort this for me, any day now...", and so he has.
Thank you SO MUCH for this! It’s incredibly helpful and informative. I’m taking my A7SIII to go shoot tomorrow and this came at the perfect time.
Who else is watching this knowing they will never afford the camera 😂
Keep grinding brother. You'll get there before you know it!
I thought the same for a long time... but once you go all in, and put in the work to learn and get better daily... you will get there sooner than you think!!! Wish you the best of luck!!!
@@storybookfilms944 I learnt alot from this actually. Since I haven't owned a camera. Always good to be educated before you start
I don't own need or want it but this video applies to all Sony cameras.
rsmith02 not necessarily.
Do you have a7siii : NO
You are watching long video : YES
WHY?
because of G.U.
unbelivable, that you share this information for free on the internet. subed!
Seems like exposing correctly and using both native ISOs should do the trick tor reduce noise using s-log in dark scenes!
Thanks gerald, you cleared up some of my confusion. I think I just got undone.
Finally got around to watching this. And it was SPECTACULAR!!!
Extremely helpful, thanks for putting in all the work to show us these tests. I was one who misunderstood the noise of Slog 3. Nice Gameboy, btw!
Thanks so much! 🙏
@Gerald Undone Which has better low noise potential, Slog2 or Slog3? Does the maximum value of video output not matter? Slog3 only has 94 while slog2 has 106. I am shooting with a Sony a7iv.
