Holy hell. Way to change my life man. I've had the a 6300 for 6 months or so now. I"ve been back button focusing, thanks to seeing a write up on Colby Brown's blog. That really upped my game initially but I've been having a hell of a time with focus problems and getting the shot I wanted. It was an absolute joke at night because of focus hunting, and not knowing a way to lock the focus once I did get it without the switch being physically on the lens. Thank you SO much, i've remapped all my keys to your set up and the results are fantastic.
With an electronic view finder you see what you'll get before you press that button... hmm... maybe I'm to novice in this field, but point and shoot cameras always did that thing (on the LCD), DSLRs were not doing it in the past.
Just bought a Fuji xt-10. Same principal as the Sony a6xxx. It's a lot of fun to shoot. A lot !!! I can see why you like the little camera. Still can't get rid of my Canon big pro set up 😥😥.
+joel cleare In some ways I wish I brought my canon to Cuba - working with my sony a7RI and adpaters with canon lenses is just too slow for some street shooting OR I wish I could afford some sony glass right now ;)
I do have shutter button autofocus + manual focus on the back button at the same time. Just keep the back button pressed and the shutter button wont trigger AF.
Make sure to download and install Sony's new firmware update for it. Improvements were made in photo taking and the overheating was greatly reduced. A very worthwhile camera now.
What I like about youtube videos is useful info given to users straight to the point. You have hit it this time. I believe many viewers would appreciate it more with this kind of presentaion.
great video, thanks for it. in minute 4:40, if the subject (mushroom) wouldn't be in sharp focus what would you do? Go back and lower aperture for instance? Cheers and keep it up.
yes- that picture was at f/4. You could switch to f/5.6 and try again. Also make sure you aren’t focusing too close - closer than the lens will let you.
These guys - they are sweet. Rock solid www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/618743-REG/Sennheiser_EW_122P_G3_A_EW122_p_G3_Camera_Mount.html/BI/4773/KBID/5287/DFF/d10-v21-t1-x30531/KWID/EZ
+Chuck Moser No, it now has the ability to stay in focus area change mode that was not available in earlier models and is not even available in my Sony a7RII. technically it isn't the center point then, it is the directional pad around it - but you use center point to activate and deactivate that mode. Again - this is a difference from ALL other sony cameras at this time though with a simple firmware upgrade they could make the change.
Oh man, I've been struggling so hard to make the back button work from any guide and video I found in like 1h. And then suddenly you explained that I got to turn off the pre-AF. Thank you so much, great tutorial.
Gopalakrishnan Iyer I actually just found a comment where the maker of this video replied to another person... I was a little confused as well. I think he meant to say that the lens is the Sony Vario-Tessar T* E 16-70mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens
Very good review! I picked up several tricks from it, since I own the camera (with same exactly lenses) for a couple of month, and prefer it to the Sony A7R2..!
was thinking about purchasing this camera/lens combo, but then thought maybe i'd rent from Lumoid and try it out for a couple weeks first- cost is about 300 bucks- is it worth it to try before i buy? or should i just go for it!?
I currently own the Fuji X-T10. I've had this camera on my mind but not sure if it's worth selling my fuji body. I use native lenses anyway so id only be switching bodies. I shoot a lot of landscape and portrait. Do you think it's worth the jump or do you believe that the X-T10 is still better for the jobs I am doing.
Toby, you're using the 16-35mm FE lens? Very nice, but it's designed specifically for full-frame and hugely expensive. Are the Sony crop sensor lenses so poor that one would have to invest in FE lenses?
+PhotoRec TV If you want to stay 'small' and zoom f4 is about it and the for me then the 1670z is the default lens with the sel1018 in the bag. If you accept that f2.8 is not a option you can a good amount of lenses with you in a small bag. my small bag has 3 zooms (sel1018,sel1670z and sel70200g) and 3 primes (24f1.8, 35f1.8 and 50f1.8). And still have the feeling the whole setup with some cards, batteries is small for walkabouts for hours.
+PhotoRec TV thanks Toby! I think I'm just so much obsessed with the ISO that sometimes it limits my artistic creativity. I'm shooting with a Sony a7 m2 so I shouldn't be much worried..but when I can I shot at iso 100 (95% of the time I believe). perhaps I should start to use A or P mode instead of only manual just to get used to this idea.. Cheers!
It's unlikely you will have overheating issues in that kind of time frame but depending on the conditions, if you are shooting 4K, LCD against the body etc.
Fantastic job Toby. I have the originalSony 6000 and have recently upgraded to the full frame Pentax K-1, do you have any plans of reviewing that camera.
+Rick Mentore Pentax/Ricoh is bad at providing review samples, only place you will see reviews is from camera stores or Pentax sponsored photographers. But you already have it, so no need for review ;)
hey Toby, how's the 4K quality? can you share a sample? you're a great photographer and I believe you will squeeze every ounce of performance from this camera PS would love to see it with Canon lens
when you talk about how "when you see your image on the evf and take your photo it is exactly how it comes out, does that option work for the Sony Alpha A7ii.
Hey what's up? Between these 2 cameras sony alpha a6300 and fujifilm xt-20; Which do you consider to be more versatile and usual for recording video and taking good pictures? The videos are musical video clips that will be recorded in all kinds of natural conditions with little and lots of light and also featured in photography. Thanks and excellent your videos. Greetings.
+RickBSO The 16-50 comes with it and it is very nicely portable and decent quality but I don't love it and recommend saving for the 16-70 f/4 or get the 16-50 but get a decent prime too.
Toby - you had recommended the 16-70 zeiss branded sony lens on kit.com. how does that lens compare with a fuji system with the 18-55 f2.8-4 or the 18-135 f3.5-5.6. my choice is between the xt20 or the sony a6300 to save weight and money that i want to put into better glass
Hi Toby, thank you for posting this. Do you have long term usage update on this camera if it is still worth to purchase in 2018 for non-professional travel video usage?
As an owner of the camera, it's excellent in 2019 still. It's no longer top of the market but it can shoot 4K video, autofocus is still lightning fast and it has a great lens ecosystem. For personal use, it's absolutely worth it and the size helps for travel as you can see from its size in the video. I don't think you need full frame unless you're a pro/paid photographer.
Hey I’m very new to this and I wanted to purchase my first camera. Do you think an A6300 is a good beginners camera? And what is that cover on the tip of the lens? Thanks..
Would I recommend it to a beginner as their first camera? probably not. There are a lot of settings on this camera that you'll want to get to know. And if you are asking what is on the tip of the lens (it is a lens hood, used for reducing sun glare on the lens.) it shows me that you have a lot to learn about photography. I would recommend a Canon Rebel or a Nikon 3300. OR you could go the other way with it and jump right into the expensive stuff. Only if you have the available funds and the will to learn through extensive trial and error.
What did you record the video with? Gh4? Moire on your jeans! ;-D I thought I might would get the A6300 as a 4k camera, but everyone is saying the rolling shutter is insanely bad and that the moire is bad as well. Even with the 5D Mark IV, I'd still like to have a B camera that's 4k that doesn't cost as much.
Yeah, I was working with a pro Sony 4k camera for a while but I had to sell it to get some of my lenses back that I had gotten rid of. Now I am going back to 4k, at some point this year. The only thing about the Gh4 is that Iso 1600. Any news on a GH5? I don't keep up with Panasonic stuff.
+nagol5178 nothing on the GH5 yet, ISO 1600 isn't too bad but shooting in vlog has negated that whole "the shadows are shit" noise on the GH4. With a speedbooster this thing is literally perfect
Well, I'd definitely need a speed booster and I was curious on how well those work. I mostly use a Canon 24-70 2.8 ii. I also have a Canon 24-105 F/4 because it has IS, and I have some other lenses but with video I mostly stay in the 24-70 range and typically don't need to go below 2.8 on a full frame. So, will it look like 2.8 looks on a full frame? As well as the same field of view? I do most video shots at around 35mm.
+nagol5178 Honestly, just get all the BS that's exaggerated on the internet out of your head, and get a camera in you hand and shoot exactly what you would be shooting with it, and see if your end result has any artifacts that you dislike. The biggest, completely over-exageratted issue with this camera is the rolling shutter. This camera has to read a lot of pixels in order to give you that crispy, 6K-downscaled-to-4K image; and it shows with it's rolling shutter artifacts. HOWEVER, the only time I see these artifacts are during moments that I would NEVER use in an end result. i.e. waving the camera violently side to side, or bumping the camera accidentally, or during jittery shakey moments.
My focus magnifier doesn't work when I have the back button focus set up like yours. What focus mode are you using? - I am using AF-C because it seems to lock faster.
Mate, great video, thank you. I am hoping that you can help me out, and perhaps a few others. I am keen to get into doing timelaps videos especially of the stars. I sadly can't afford a A7S so was wondering if the a6300 can still do well for star/night sky timelaps videos. I am hoping you could do a video like this one but focusing on this specifically.
I have a6300 as well but my problem is that I keep seeing alot of noise on my photos. I keep my iso's low as well. I'm shooting with the kit lens and the fe 50mm. Any suggestions?
Hi guys! I've got a question: Despite, on paper, being very similar cameras head-to-head aside from the fact that one is a mirrorless camera and the other is a DSLR... Why does the video on the Sony A6300 look so much better compared to the Canon SL3/250D? And I don't mean the colors but the image quality overall (pixels look sharper, image has better definition, 4K looks "more 4K" on the Sony than on the Canon). Can somebody please help me explaining why does this happen?
Amazing video and awesome camera! Just bought it also thanks to your videos, I just have an issue with the sigma 18 35 and Mc 11 combo. My sony says the various focus modes aren't available on that lens! What could that be? Maybe I need to update both the sigma 18 35 and the Mc 11? Thank you!
+MPK 4K Sigma is saying you need to update firmward on their lenses with the USB dock to get best results. I plan to test the adpater in a few days here in Cuba (I hope) I don't have any more helpful info at this time.
Thanks for the review mate. Much appreciated. I've been wanting to get a new camera for my channel. Something that's close to my 5dmk3 quality but had autofocus and is smaller and easier to carry. I think this will be my option
Any thoughts on autofocus performance of a6300 in combination with Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM? I ask as autofocus on a6000 with Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM is miserable.
Very informative. The a6300 isn't a perfect camera as its more like a computer with a lens than a traditional camera; however, it is just so much fun to use. Great work. Thanks.
hello. great video. thanks. juts needed some useful help. Please suggest, this one or wait for GoPro 5. or if should i consider this for still photography purpose. I was actually looking a for a good compact one for all purpose sply outdoors (travel/adventure). I don't need 4K. 2K or 1080p 120fps is very good for me. but I'm really concerned about non presence of Camera in-body Image Stabilization and cannot articulate the screen totally like Canon G7X II or even Alpha 5100. How is the video stabilization in 1080p in this one? Can I overlook this flaw as an traveler/hiker? Any ways to stabilize by adding lens (I'm an amateur)? These are are the main things asking me step back. Your suggestions will be very very helpful. Thank you :)
Hey toby, great review. I'm planning to buy my first interchangeable lens system and seriously thinking of going with e mount instead of dslr. But the cost of equivalent lenses on e mount holding me back. Can you recommend me a 3-4 lens combinations for e mount system on a budget? I'm an enthusiast not pro. Thanks in advance.
We really like the 16-70 F4 and the 10-18 F4. The FE 55 1.8 is a very nice prime but that new 50 1.8 has just been released and might be a winner - Scott
I have a a6300 for a while but im still struggling with the photos im getting fro it! I dont like the sharpness im getting out of it AT ALL! Images look flat and boring! I used too have a nikon D3000 with a 10mega px sensor and that would give me so much more vivid e deep photographs! WHY??? I've been looking every where and i cant find solution. This sensor is twice as sharper but photos are extremely blurry and out of sharpness. And No its not a matter of focus
Thanks! Great review. Quick question on back button focus. For situations that you know someone else will be operating the camera would it make sense to setup back button focus but leave AF w/ Shutter On ? It seems like the focus system works the same with that on but you now have the option to back button focus or use the half shutter press. Thanks again!
Am I suppose to assume you are shooting this video with the camera you are reviewing? I do not get why every camera review video they never mention what camera they are using to film with???? Please help? Why is is so hard?
Holy hell. Way to change my life man. I've had the a 6300 for 6 months or so now. I"ve been back button focusing, thanks to seeing a write up on Colby Brown's blog. Toby I notice that you are using Sony zeiss 16-70 f4 , any chance that you do a review of this lens. JC from Montreal
The AF button on the back is the best suggestion from this video 🙂
Just bought a Fuji xt-10. Same principal as the Sony a6xxx. It's a lot of fun to shoot. A lot !!! I can see why you like the little camera. Still can't get rid of my Canon big pro set up 😥😥.

Can't wait to get my a6300. What did you film this video with, Toby? The quality is beautiful, just curious.

That's ironic lol
I have the a6300 camera, my only problem i cant use RAW files (ARW) in lightroom and it wont copy as DNG files....

"r", as hell.
Just got me a6300, good stuff in this video :)
Make sure to download and install Sony's new firmware update for it. Improvements were made in photo taking and the overheating was greatly reduced. A very worthwhile camera now.

What are you using to film this review?
Filmed with the Panasonic GH4.
I love it... It looks very cinematic... You could make a feature film with this look..
Great sound also, which mic are you using?

The Standard option for the center button has been a feature of Sony's ILCE cameras from the beginning.
+Chuck Moser No, it now has the ability to stay in focus area change mode that was not available in earlier models and is not even available in my Sony a7RII. technically it isn't the center point then, it is the directional pad around it - but you use center point to activate and deactivate that mode. Thanks for the review. I've had my camera almost a month and these tips help for the beginner.
Oh man, I've been struggling so hard to make the back button work from any guide and video I found in like 1h. And then suddenly you explained that I got to turn off the pre-AF. Thank you so much, great tutorial.
Which lens are you using with your a6300 in this video ?
Lairmore 16-70 F4
+Veridian What is Lairmore??
Gopalakrishnan Iyer I actually just found a comment where the maker of this video replied to another person... I was a little confused as well. I think he meant to say that the lens is the Sony Vario-Tessar T* E 16-70mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens
Good review brother i love that detailed information please do some imp about this camera
Which option is best for video shoot slog 2-3 plz inform me more detail other setting for Best result.I am waiting for your reply.
Only shoot in SLOG if you want to spend lots of time color grading the footage.
Great Video! For travel what settings do you recomend in focus?
Is it true that you need to put focus back on the shutter button to get continuous focus to work in the video mode?
Hey How do you set your C1 button to do that? mine does something else :( thank you!
Gear Menu, Menu #7, Custom Key (Shoot) - you set it there
What did you film this with? I really like the sharpness and grading.
Panasonic GH4
Hmm, still getting the a6300...
May I ask what lens you are using?
Nice couple of tips, thanks
Very good review! I picked up several tricks from it, since I own the camera (with same exactly lenses) for a couple of month, and prefer it to the Sony A7R2..!
i was told for back button focus to leave in continuous focus mode... but then eye af doesn't work. Do you suggest the same?
Great Video found it very helpful only had my 6300 for a week!
Please make a video for Eos M5 vs a6300. Which is the best camera? please help me with this

Why not trying shooting at iso 100 as default directly? (Except if some artistic result must be achieved)
+giuvilas1 ISO 100 is too low to always shoot at. Even in these woods You need at higher ISO to get a correct exposure.
+PhotoRec TV thanks Toby! I think I'm just so much obsessed with the ISO that sometimes it limits my artistic creativity. Cheers!
Thank you for the great video!
Hi . Would you recommend for wedding or birthday ? I film clip of 7min . But I need to record several short clip. I will have overheating problems ?
It's unlikely you will have overheating issues in that kind of time frame but depending on the conditions, if you are shooting 4K, LCD against the body etc.
What lens did you use for the Sony a6300 in this video?

What kind of picture profile did you use? thanks :)
+PhotoRec TV thank you for the quick answer!
A really helpful video, thank you very much :-)
Is the focus standard (ability to move focus point) not available in Sony a6000
Very informative. The a6300 isn't a perfect camera as its more like a computer with a lens than a traditional camera; however, it is just so much fun to use. Great work. Thanks.
spytromics the feature is very big deal for 1000$
is the a 6000 still the best buy .help me
+Bhargava Reddy If you don't need 4K video, yes.
ObelixCMM i dont need 4k, i use only for photos.. In 60000 rupees price range is any other camera as capable as sony a 6000
+Bhargava Reddy Fuji x-t1 or you could wait for the x-t2 in july !
+Hamza Benarafa okay thanks. Is sony a 6000 better than nikon d 5500
+Hamza Benarafa "Best buy" implies that he is looking at best buy in Sony A6000 price range, Fuji XT-1 is $1,000.00 more than A6000
hello. great video. thanks. juts needed some useful help.
I love your content! I will stay watching!
I'm actually using the Sony a6300 for my RUclips videos right now. what would be your preferred lens?
Ask Lewie how do you manage with Vlogs as you cant flip its screen
i will check your vlogs man
Hey toby, great review.
Hi, i tried pressing the C1 and it came out to Focus Mode. How do i get it to the box there?
+PhotoRec Tv what lens were you using?
Great vid (I've seen a lot!) is that a Sony SEL1670Z Zoom Lens for Sony E-Mount?
what sense is that ?
Your the best! But how to edit videos?
Great info !! Was that the Sony Vario-Tessar T* E 16-70mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens you were using in this video ?
Thanks, a great help!x
What camera was this review filmed with?
Panasonic GH4
I just got Sony a6300 , 😍
I have a a6300 for a while but im still struggling with the photos im getting fro it! And No its not a matter of focus
hi, can I buy this device from you if you willing to sell??
where the focus peaking go?
(the red artifact)
Just picked up a6500 and these tips came in extremely handy, Thanx...
thanks bud!
Thanks! Great review. Quick question on back button focus. For situations that you know someone else will be operating the camera would it make sense to setup back button focus but leave AF w/ Shutter On ? It seems like the focus system works the same with that on but you now have the option to back button focus or use the half shutter press. Thanks again!
I realy like the video end you photos are realy nice but i think you can do a littel bit better in postporduction (lightroom)
Why is this 480p ? :0
It's not.
because your stupid
Other then that great review!!!!!
I love my a6300.
Am I suppose to assume you are shooting this video with the camera you are reviewing? I do not get why every camera review video they never mention what camera they are using to film with???? Please help? Why is is so hard?
Toby records with the Panasonic GH4, the review camera is in his hand throughout - Scott
