+that1cameraguy What was the room temperature you were shooting at ? Back here it gets to as high as 48 degree Celsius outside. Probably not for me for travel vlogging ? Also, how much time it takes to cool down to start recording again if you don't swap the battery and don't have the cage?
+that1cameraguy +Prashant Vikal Yeah, wondering will the cage help dissipate heat outside, or absorb more heat from the sun since its all black. I have overheating issue with stills only at 10am, 32°C, with A6000(black) I could shoot whole day under scorching sun. I probably can use the cage to mount fan and battery on. But this problem should not be there at the first place, because I shoot stills only most of the time.
Have you try this with and without tricks to make sure the helped? Meaning, no mods will over heat, with mods it won't, and try this more than once just to make sure everyone really helps? Thanks.
+Michael Ma No since the limit is stated as 30 minutes recording time in normal temp conditions (see manual). I recorded hours with my a6300 without overheating.
Do you really think I use this camera for just filming in 1080p? the reason why people buy this one is because of the 6k signal which down-sampled to 4k and give a detailed image. I hear a lot of people got this "overheating" issue in warm country's. P.S. I had this camera before it was even on the market.
@@ColtKirwan wifi and bluetooth are both relatively high-energy systems that could well produce a little additional heat. if you don't need it, turn it off. saves battery and might reduce heat.
Some people crying for the 4k overheating, ok, buy a nikon d5 (6000 dollars camera), can shoot 3min in 4k only... The a6300 cost 1000$ and you want all the best. Is like buy a 3000$ car but want the same as a ferrari.... If you know the limitations you can do good jobs. I have this camera and knowing that i think is the best camera in that price, slog is just magic... I came from the canon 5d mk ii and the sony is an other world. A friend have the gh4 with vlog and it's so good but i think the sony is a little bit better, and the slog its free, vlog costs him 100$. And in low light terms, a6300 is so good with an aps-c sensor. In the other hand, i like the touch screen and gh4 menus. This are the best two options for me right now, a6300 and gh4. G7 seems good but i don't now if it can shoot in vlog, for me it's important for post processing. This is my personal opinion! I'm not a sony fanboy, just a person how try to buy the best in price/quality range. I recommend it for sure, i would buy it another time! (sorry for my english)
I am very much considering buying this camera. As a complete novice to film making (and currently applying to film school when I retire) this camera was suggested to me by a friend going to UH film school and your video helped me greatly and gave me confidence its a solid purchase at this price point. Thanks so much for your video and the tips. All will be used and can't wait to film my first short.
Glad it helped. As long as you don't expose the camera in really warm temperatures and direct sunlight and try to record for too long. You'll enjoy it.
I respect the ingenuity of you trying to solve this cameras problems. however, the fact that this video is NOT a parody of the camera's inherent engineering issues is a parody in itself.
This was helpful, thanks. Another approach - if you are doing long interviews or similar - is to connect the camera via HDMI to a Blackmagic Mini Monitor or similar and a laptop and record externally using Davinci Resolve. This way the camera is powered and records externally. You still need to keep a battery inside though - the camera will still use it a tiny bit - even if it doesn't look like it. Other thoughts are - recording UHD uses LESS power than HD because the processor does less and as others say in the comments - turning wifi off helps.
Ive no doubt there will be many thinking why should I have to go to all this trouble to make the camera work properly. Shouldn't it be able to do all that Sony state without this extra hassle? Well of course it should, however these are great tips, effective work arounds to get the most out of the A6300 capabilities. Thanks for sharing.
Here is another tip; I use a Feelworld Lut7 external monitor while shooting. It is fastened to a UUrig camera cage by using the UUrig R059 camera monitor bracket (strongest bracket to the monitor). The external monitor mounts 2 sony f970 batteries on the back of the monitor. The monitor has a power out jack and I run power to the A6300 by using a dummy battery. This week I shot from 8am to 545pm straight in the Indonesian tropical sun with zero overheating problems. The 2 f970 batteries will power both the camera and monitor for 5-6 hours. You can change 1 battery out while allowing the other battery to run the monitor and camera and keep filming. I believe using the dummy battery helps reduce heat. The bottom line is I am shooting all day long in direct tropical sun and have zero heating issues with over 9 hrs continuous 4k shooting .
My inner geek was very excited to hear about the cage conducting heat away from the camera. My dad would have figured this out. He was a machinist but could have been an engineer. Great tips for any camera I would think. Thanks
+Lanre Esho (LanreEshoFilms) I had the 85mm Batis. I just don't have a lot of lenses. I've been considering getting the Sony 16-70, but theirs also the 18-105.
After 2 years, the damage has been done to this camera. I think this is what everyone will always remember with the Sony a6300. Infamously overheating. Firmware updates help but they are only a quick band-aid solution to this. The Sony a6700 or whatever next has to overcome this. Designing and implement better hardware or software to avoid overheating.
Buying a different camera is the best way to go. Had the a6300 for 2 days... Overheated on me outside in 90 degree heat (pretty mild summer day) in 20 minutes. Would not cool down... Tried the same thing the next day with the exact same results. Gh4 or G7 should be your best option because they do not overheat, ever
Have just ordered this camera and now learning of this design fault so feel a bit meh. Does the camera only overheat in recording mode? Like if you are out and about shooting GVs now and again or filming a short film where the camera is not always constantly in record mode? The cage does seem like a good tip to overcome the issue.
Gret tips!! Haters always gonna hate. F em!!! I bought 2 A6300's and have been having great results shooting video, with no overheating issues....... The A6300 bang for the buck is amazing.... 4k, slog 2 and 3.... 120 per sec internal.... and you can buy 3 of them for the price of one A7s 2........ people will say oh but its not full frame...... well neither are most of the high in cameras that shoot TV, commercial and cinema .... that cost 20-100 K and up to rig out with lenses and gear to even use them........ Keep up the good work and tips Brother. Peace CM
How about using a vertical grip, since it uses a dummy battery and also extends the camera body. I use the a6000 third party vertical grip on my a6300 but haven't done the tests.
+that1cameraguy Thanks. Next question, the kit lens has a power zoom lever; when I touch it, it zooms quickly... possible to adjust the zoom speed and is there a LANC port so I can connect a zoom remote control?
Thank you! I took your advice and bought a cage at the same time I bought the bodies… works like a champ! I don't understand why everyone is bitching so hard about the fact that this happens at all? I did a ton of research before I bought and I'm a "died in the wool" Canon guy… this camera is AMAZING and would be, even if it was twice the price! but at $1k… it's really the only choice! and the fact that is APSC and not "full framed" is even a better reason! (Correct me if I'm wrong here, but) All of the top digital cinema cameras, like the C100, C300, FS7,even the Red's… are all APSC / super 35 and NOT full framed. Add that it has way more (video) resolution that it's big brothers the A7xxx's and that's the final straw. HOWEVER… the "rolling shutter" (in 4k) is almost more than a deal breaker! ah but the resolution….(the "rolling shutter" is insanely bad!!)
Glad it helped! Yes, the a6300 I'd a remarkable little camera if you work around the subtle flaws. The only thing when recording video and overheating is that you can't record for long in a direct sunlight on a 90F + day, which is typical where I'm at. Using an umbrella to keep it in shade helps a lot. The benefit of the cinema cameras is that it's full featured with Nd filters and proper audio, making them more appealing to some. Enjoy your a6300!
Also note that I do not shoot with auto lens but only with cine primes and I power with an external USB battery pack. I've seen tests where a guy puts an amp meter on the USB port and the power usage goes way up with the auto focus working it's tail off! power draw equals heat! and with the a6300's amazing fast auto focus, you KNOW the CPU in the camera is working hard (to be fast…) and speed equals heat too! I don't even like the look of auto focus and as a video pro (I like to think of myself as a Cine guy too?) I prefer to pull my own focus… even if I sometimes get it wrong!
same here in Washington DC Metro area 90F plus. And yeah, you are, of course, correct about the digital Cine cameras… but it used to be that you couldn't even remotely get there from here (so to speak) UNLESS you could afford to rent or buy those cameras. Audio for me in my cameras is used only for sync. I only use external multi track audio recorders anyway. ND filters are the reason I have Matte boxes too. my point still is the glorious resolution 6k! (down sampled NOT pixel binning) to 4k (hence the HORRIBLE shutter roll) I just wish you could record raw? or at least have 4,2,2 color space onboard…but again $1k!?!
The cage also keeps your warm hands off the body of the camera. There are inexpensive handles that attach to the cage that will help even more. Great video... Thanks.
hi - I just found a Dummy battery and charging lead that I used to use to externally charge my Sony NEX5n will using that help. PS the link you provided for the 'Small Rig' Cage doesn't work.
Thank you for this. I'm currently considering whether to get this a6300 or a Canon 80D, for its AF capability in video. Hope you get the chance to test this methods outdoors too. As for other folks pointing out that Sony shouldn't have released a half perfect product, I think we all agree, but no need to put down anyone who's trying to share a tip or two on making it work.
If you're trying to decide between the Sony a6300 and the Canon ADD, definitely get the Canon. They are completely different machines, and if you think they're similar, you're better off with the Canon.
People want a consumer and non-professional camera to have the same capabilities as other professional-quality cameras! Anyway, these examples given here to avoid overheating seem valid to me especially if the grip is aluminum as it is a good heat sink! Removing the battery cover and moving the rear LCD away from the camera body is good advice! If this camera had EVF like my Sony A7 it would be enough to configure the EVF and turn off the rear LCD. EVF produces less heat because its consumption is lower.
I plan to use my Sony a6000 for recording vlogs and such. I recently bought this camera, but am unsure whether I should keep or return it. I'll try your tips and hope for the best. When you switch your battery, can you have it plugged into a usb charger so that you can quickly switch batteries while still recording? Can you record solely by using external charger and no battery inside?
With the a6300 you have to have a battery inside to power it via USB. You can charge it with external USB while recording. I don't know if it's the same with the a6000. What type of videos do you plan to use it for?
+that1cameraguy I plan on making vlogs at home but sometimes out at cafes. I do travel on the side and I have an external battery to charge the camera. I will consider buying the frame you mentioned in the video. Where can I get that? Also, what kind of recording devices do you use? I am considering clip on mics.
+Sarah Nguyen i don't know if the a6000 is the best blogging camera. something like the rx100mkiii since the screen flips all the way. I'm using the rode link wireless mic kit.
+that1cameraguy if I don't have the flip screen is there a way to connect it to an external monitor? In the RX100 MK III it doesn't look like it works well with low light. The camera is also not DSLR and I'm not sure if there are any other reservations you would mention I might have if I switch to that. I plan to transform my living room with a curtain backdrop and need some advice on lighting materials. I also use Sony Vegas Platinum 9.0 which I received as a gift a couple years back. Are there other programs you recommend? I'm getting into filming because of my involvement in a nonprofit.
I use Adobe Premiere Pro. If you're on a Mac, I would recommend Final Cut Pro. You can connect the a6000 via hdmi to a monitor. I just offered something like the rx100iii/iv since you were mentioning vlogging.
I plan on buying this camera. I don't plan on using 4k often; but if i do, i would have recording times of about 5 minutes more or less. Would overheating be an issue that i should worry about?
Nice very helpfull video... i can see that you have the batis lens, my question is, do you recommend this lens for recording videos? i can see that it doesnt have the rotary aperture(f-stop) ring on the lens, what do you think about that? Do you think i should go with this lens or another lens??... Is it easy/usefull to controle the aperture in the camera?
+that1cameraguy Im going to use the camera to shoot handheld videos 50% of the times auto focus....A big problem is that there isnt much to choose from for this camera.. What else can i get with 85mm that have image stabilization? can you recommend one? maybe from another brand that fits the e mount?
Thank you for the helpful video. I have canon dslr cameras which have no acess to use external mic. I haven't got any help. Do you mind to give me any advice how to solve the problem by using any helpful gear if they is any available? Thanks.
Yes, I would. As long as you're aware of its flaws and understand how to work around it, it should be fine. I just wouldn't use the a6300 for long form recording.
+that1cameraguy my issue is I'm in Orlando. My iPhone overheats 15seconds after I walk out the house. And I'm only getting it for video. Knowing that, would you get it if you were me? Or another recommendation.
+David Kashner No. I mean, maybe you can buy it from a retailer. Try and see if you can get it to overheat. If it does, return it. Just check return policies. It's hot here in California too, and when I've had the camera out in direct sunlight recording video, it would shut off in 5min
I have shot several hours of 4k video on my new A6300.... and never had an issue. It would be interesting to see if this is a issue with certain lenses.... or settings.... but again..... no issues and I have been shooting with a meatiness adaptor and a bunch of Canon L glass.
I am not sure where you are shooting.... but I shot my footage down in southern Utah while on vacation in places like Arches National Park and Goblin Valley. It was high 90s the whole time. Different might be the humidity levels.... or the amount of focusing that is being done. My footage was done mostly with AF off as they were landscape shots, sunrises, sun sets.... panning vista type stuff. Or it could be the bit rate of the memory cards.... Not doubting your having the problem but just letting people know it isn't a universal problem. Perhaps a lens/camera combo issue. Good luck with it..... hope you figure it out.
This is very helpful but I want to be able to take really long single takes so swapping out the batteries isn't an option. But opening the battery door and screen is a great idea!
Excellent video and very helpful. I'm trying to downscale my camera equipment from an FS5 and a7sII to a pair of a6300's and this video has been great. I bought the small rig cage and changed the batteries every 29 minutes and 50 seconds. I've now recorded indoors for 90 minutes without any overheating warnings. I think the combination of the cage and battery swapping is a good fix for the overheating problem, at least indoors at room temperature (72 degrees). I didn't leave the battery door open, I've just used the SmallRig cage and done battery swapping. Hopefully Sony releases a firmware update to address the issue so battery swapping isn't necessary. Just as a side note. Using Class 10 U1 cards works in 4k recording on the a6300 but overheating occurs earlier than using Class 10 U3 cards. Class 10 U1 cards record 4K video on the FS5 and a7sII without any problems.
+TennisUnleashed - Unleash Your Game Thanks for sharing your results. Much appreciated it. As much as I enjoy the a6300, I still can't bring myself to record long form videos with it even with these hacks. I'm still sticking my GH4 for those longer shots.
So I'm thinking about making the switch to the a6300 from my Canon 7Dii given the superior video quality. Even when I film weddings I typically turn the camera off after I record a series of shots (typically no longer than 3min at a time, admittedly in the interest of preserving battery life). I assume that I shouldn't anticipate any overheating issues given my style of filming?
Yeah, it should work out alright. Also, the a6300's 1080p is superior to the 7D, so if you need to record longer, jump to that, but short 4k recordings should be fine. However, if your in direct sunlight on a warm day, it could overheat still.
Gosh, so the overheating issue sounds like a deal breaker?! I guess the a7 would probably be a better alternative and in a similar price range (since I'm not too interested in 4k)? Thanks!
+Jeffrey T I was doing a team portrait shoot at 5pm hot day about 100 degrees F. My a7Rii was in the direct sunlight on a tripod. I had it on for about 3 minutes getting the group ready. The overheating indicator turned on and I had not even shot a photo yet. I ended up using an umbrella over the camera to keep it from direct sunlight. It got through the team photos keeping it in shade. Im not sure about the first gen a7.
Handy to see the Smallrig cage on the 6300 here, I was kinda thinking about picking one up anyway, but that's a definite added bonus with the heat dissipation.
For Studio recording would using a mains AC Power Supply Adapter eliminate overheating issues (since there is no battery heating up inside the body)? Also will recording to external source through HDMI out (Decklink 4k, video assist 4k etc) help prolong recording time as far as overheating is concerned?
+Evan Fotis It can still overheat even if you use AC Power Supply Adapter. Even using an external recorder can have the unit overheat. However, I think in a studio environment where the ambient temperature isn't very high, the external recorder will do well.
+asafblasberg Hi Evan, i have to apologize for my post, It was an error --- what I FORGOT to add in this post above was that with AC power supply adapter, the camera overheated *when I recorded iNTERNALLY* 4k... however, I myself got an atomos 4K, just like you, and had ZERO problems with it, no overheating whatsoever... i PRAY it remains stable (is there a cross-my-fingers emoticon? ) LOLOL
ATOMOS is the only fix, the codec will be different, you won't use anymore the internal XAVC from Sony but the one from ATOMOS with a higher bitrate. The proc from the sony is the issue.
Definitely good tips. I had overheating issues with my a6000 the one time I used it to record during a 20min+ session.I was already planning to buy that exact same cage. So an additional reason for me to buy it. Once I had will do a comparison with and without.
Great video! Also using adapters and adapted lenses on my a6000 was a huge help. I got about 3 hours in a room environment with just a commlite and sigma 17-50 ef mount, as well as a Nikon adapter and Nikon zoom sitting on a tripod swapping batteries, didn't even open the battery door between swaps, screen was open.
Here's an idea. Can you stick a Kool 'N' Soothe pack behind the screen to cool down the body? They are designed to use on your forehead when you feel hot or have a fever. They are non medicated and have a really cold gel inside. I would love to know if you can test that for us and let us know how many extra mins recording time you got?
I'm in the market to get a A6300, would you say shooting 1-4minute clips on and off would still cause overheating? Cause so far I've been hearing people who record over 10+minutes have the overheating issue. So my assumption is the camera wouldnt overheat if I'm doing small clips every 2-4mins. What do you think?
First off I'm using a slightly older Sony camera(I wanted to pick up a 2nd camera that would give me a full frame field of view with speedbooster for vlogging and b-roll, a little throw around cine camera) that also had heating issues and fits into the same cage. So first off I actually opted for a grey/silver variant because black absorbs heat out in the sun and Im not sure about the a6300 coming in other colors but felt it was worth mentioning - also the cage allows you to put a grip on the right so you're not actually touching the camera at all which helps, I hadn't thought about it as a heat sink though. Would you consider getting thermal pads to stick to the base of the camera/where the camera comes close to contacting the cage? I'm sure in black cut to size it would be discreet and turn the cage into an actual heatsink. I was considering maybe making a heatsink mount with a sheet of copper that would fit behind the screen and attach to the back of the camera where the heat is and extend out to the left and up above the camera where you could attach maybe a Zalman CNPS2X while also bolting it to the cage for added stability - active cooling that is out of the way like another accessory and they're designed to be quiet... The other thing with the high speed SD cards - thats huge and works really well.
Hello, i have a budget of 1300 euros almost from selling out my Nikon gear. Should i go for the a6300 sigma 16mm 1.4 and 30mm f1.4 or go for the a 6500 and only the sigma 30mm f1.4 ?? Thanks a lot in advance nice video mate !! :)
I think there's a 18-105 f4 for crop sensors only, I don't really see myself needing much more than that save for when I need like 200mm which is rare, unfortunately I can't use it on my a7s
Hi, I'm planing to buy this camera. I'm shooting music videos. Because of that, I rarely make continuous shots longer that 5 minutes (just when I'm recording the singing parts). Usually, I'm turning off the recording button every 10 - 20 seconds to reframe the shot. This type of shoot can go on even an hour without a break longer than 5 minutes. Can you please tell me, under these circumstances, can I expect overheating issues??
Sorry for the delay in reply. It's risky. It could overheat still. Even when the camera is on (not recording) it can overheat. Also, it appears that different model a6300's overheat faster than others, or that is the presumed theory.
Hi, Though I only own a Nex 5t anx Nex 7, what I did is just paste a thin Copper piece on the back with heat transfer adhesive, only setback is you can't close the LCD panel completely, but I never encounter any overheating issue there after, now my only problem is the video stop recording after the file size hit 2Gb. Does this 2Gb limit issue happen on A6300? Cheers.
Great tips, thank you! I really like to shot with the A6300 (especially on my moza air gimbal), but the overheating is an issue on hot summer outdoor shoots. Did you try the firmware update too?
If you are in bright sunlight 90F + weather. It can. I got the overheating indicator shooting softball with it after 20minutes. It didn't overheat, but the indicator came on.
SmallRig Cage did not work - got overheat warning just 30 minutes later - (I attached an AC adapter). I record sometimes all day and prefer to use an external AC adapter. I used the Neewer Battery one (comes with coupler). Sony should really address this issue. A firmware was addressed to fix the A7S overheating. I hope they come out with a firmware for this camera. Sadly, i will have to return it. But thanks that1cameraguy for all your help in this. I was shooting indoors. I did not try to remove the battery 30 minutes because i do a lot of concert videos that go 90 minute without stopping :((((( Can you confirm A7S does not overheat ????
+asafblasberg Awww damn, that sucks. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. You know what, someone recommended a product to try. I'm going to do a video about it this weekend and do some overheating test to see if it will help. I'm really thinking there are variant a6300 cameras out there with various thermal limits. I'm crossing my fingers on this product. Hopefully, it may help you. Unfortunately, I'm not sure about the a7S. I think it's less prone to overheating because it's recording internally at 1080p.
+that1cameraguy OK, let me know... p.s. - this is what I used to provide AC power to the camera :: www.amazon.com/Neewer-Adapter-AC-PW20-Replacement-NEX-5CA/dp/B0083EQS3I?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00
+asafblasberg Another RUclipsr recommended this thermal pad for phones. It didn't work. I'm looking at some other things. What I'm trying to do is increase the contact points of the camera to the cage. So far the only area in contact with the cage is the base. I've ordered this thermal pad that's used in PC components/electronics. I'm trying to see if I can get more direct contact with the cage to help transfer out more heat.
+that1cameraguy Hey so wanted to give you an update. First, after 11 HOURS of having the camera ON (finally I fixed the power save issue - you have to set it to REMOTE CONTROL ON), not once did it overheat. It was in my apartment - 70 degrees F (Same place it overheat before)... i attached a Shogun Atomos Ninja FLAME HDMI recorder (Best in class) - with this combination after 11 hours of testing i couldn't get the A6300 to OVERHEAT - apparently you have to turn the HDMI CONTROL setting to OFF ( if Set to ON, it CAN overheat even if you don't record 4K internally! ) Insane!! Well, good news i solved the problem, looks like it's VERY STABLE with the combination of the Atomos and 4K external recording (As long as you never record internally)... the BAD NEWS -- more $$$$$$$$ - the recorder is $1,200 (ouch)... but i'd prefer to spend more $$$ than to lose $$$ at a job for a client .... just wanted to let you know :)))
Great reviews and suggestions! I recently purchased a sony a7sii and love it, so much that I sold my nikon d810 to buy another sony. My question is would you replace a full frame with a full frame with another as7sii or should I save a bit a coin and go with the a6300 ?
+Pope Weddings That's a tough one. Do you need long continuous 4k recording? The overheating hasn't been fully resolved with this camera. On the other hand, the Sony a7Sii handles longer continuous recording times better. If you need really good stills and autofocus performance, the a6300 delivers on that.
The 4K quality on this camera is insanely good, so we want to be able to shoot for longer without overheating. We do a lot of shoots at racetracks, so we're outdoors in the heat. I wonder how much the cage would help in that situation.
If the sun is directly hitting your camera on a very warm day 90F plus heat, it will overheat very quickly. The cage will end up absorbing that heat as well and transferring it to the camera. I ran a test with the camera in direct sunlight recording at 4k. It shut off in 6 minutes.

+that1cameraguy We generally don't shoot more than 5 minutes at a time, but we shoot all day long at these events. Yesterday - over the course of about 8 hours on an 85 degree day - we shot a mix of about 200 stills and about 40 4K clips ranging in length from 30 seconds to 2 minutes but ultimately missed a few critical shots at the end of the day due to the overheat warning. Updated to the new firmware this morning to see if it helps at all. Might order the cage too before our next shoot. I also heard that faster memory cards might not contribute as much heat.
+The Awesomer I think the fast SD card myth has been debunked. The camera can only saturate the SD card some 30MB/s I believe. I honestly think an active cooling system with be the best way, using some type of fan to cool off the camera. It isn't ideal, but I think if you really want to record all day, it might be the thing to look at. That is pretty awesome that the camera held up for as long it did.
The theory I heard about the SD card isn't that higher speeds are possible - it's that the higher speed cards operate cooler at low speeds. Dunno if that makes any sense or not. That said, I agree that active cooling is probably the best solution. It's too bad that we need to worry about this stuff since the camera is so awesome otherwise.
Good tips but shooting outside is a HUGE issue for me. The a6300 overheats in stills mode as well on a sunny day. My main purpose was is to use the a6300 on a gimbal so most of the fixes just are not practical. Very disappointed and might have to sell it or send it in to Sony to see if they can fix the issue. I doubt they can.
Yeah, it is for me too. The cage won't help much on a really warm/hot day as the cage will heat up as well. I do use the a6300 with the cage on the gimbal.
For all the benefits of these Sony cameras, this is why I love my GH4. I did a 4 hour continuous recording session on it once, and I had to stop because I was running out of storage, not because it was overheating.
If you really want continuous recording and not worrying about overheating, I would get the G7, you can by an unlocked one with no limit 4k recording from a forum.
hey I ordered the cage from smallrig as well, how are you liking it so far? just a small question how long did urs take to ship its been 2 and a half weeks and I still havent gotten it in the mail Thanks!

Have you tried fast Sd cards. I've seen lately that faster cards have helped with the over heat problem. This camera is my first pick for my next camera. The only thing that has stopped me from buying it now is the over heating problem. All my vacations are during the winter flying to SE Asia where it's hot and sunny all the time. Over heating is a concern. Thanks for all you great informative videos. I really like your style!!!!!! Jon
I've been using fast cards. I think the theory was debunked since the the write speed of the camera would never saturate the actual write speed of the card.
I don't know if there really is a permeant fix for the over heat problem other than Sony putting a better heat shield in the camera. Saw a video where they took the a6000 apart and put in a better heat shield and they said this fixed the over heat problem permanently. What to believe? It's a great camera for under 1000 dollars except for this problem. Thanks for all your hard work. Jon
I partially opened up my a6300 to do something similar as the video. However, it doesn't have the same components as the a6000. I believe the person who did the video said he opened up the a6300 but could not find a location to improve the heat shield I believe.
Wow, I didn't know there was that much difference in the two cameras. You are one strong person to try this on your a6300. There would be no way I would as I'd have all kinds of parts left over. So I guess that's not the fix for the a6300. What a shame. Thanks.
Well, I just wanted to help people out there considering or already have the a6300. It's a great little cam, but that overheating issue plagues a lot of us.
Terrific tip @that1cameraguy! Great video! I like how it also provides an external protection. Are you shooting outdoor videos and still being able to shoot that long with the sun beating on it? Mahalo much.
No, you really can't shoot with the cage in direct sunlight, it will overheat sadly. I really don't trust the a6300 for long recordings at 4k. I was out in about 95 degree F weather, and the a6300 overheat warning came on with the cage and I was just taking photos
Thank you very much again. I just spent the last two hours watching your videos. I really appreciate you putting these videos together. Still deciding on the A6300 or 80D. Mahalo, mahalo, mahalo!
I see where you're going with that question. Nope I don't do any video shooting. However the 80D is like lugging a brick around when I'm in Europe shooting for hours. Hence looking for a lighter and compact camera like the A6300. The 80D also makes you looks like an American tourist and screaming to please rob me. =) On the flip side, Canon shoots amazing shots and has many pro.
If that's the case, go for the a6300. You get great image quality. Just bring a few extra batteries. If you're willing to learn the nuances of that camera, you'll really like the a6300.
It's less likely to overheat in 1080p. If you place the camera on a really hot day in direct sunlight, then yes, it'll overheat. But day to day shooting with at 1080p you probably would never see it happen. I use my a6300 for recording on my RUclips channel. You could probably use it for blogging, you'd probably want to get the Sony 10-18 lens. The face tracking autofocus is solid on this camera.
Hi cameraguy, thanks A lot for your helpful tips! Do you know whether it is better to use external batteries instead of the 220V power charge cable if I do inside video recording, concerning the overheating issues?
Bought the rig, opened the screen, the battery was exhausted and the SD card filled up shooting 4k with no overheating! Thanks man!
Make sure to do that firmware update they pushed out. You can add the extended temperature option which has solved my overheating issues.
The main tool that I use to help with overheating is talked about at 4:21 for those of you wanting to jump to that part.
+that1cameraguy What was the room temperature you were shooting at ? Back here it gets to as high as 48 degree Celsius outside. Probably not for me for travel vlogging ?
Also, how much time it takes to cool down to start recording again if you don't swap the battery and don't have the cage?
+that1cameraguy +Prashant Vikal
Yeah, wondering will the cage help dissipate heat outside, or absorb more heat from the sun since its all black.
I have overheating issue with stills only at 10am, 32°C, with A6000(black) I could shoot whole day under scorching sun.
I probably can use the cage to mount fan and battery on. But this problem should not be there at the first place, because I shoot stills only most of the time.
***** Damn... Is it that bad ?
Prashant Vikal It is. And I wish I have the silver version(when its available), even if I dislike the look of it.
Have you try this with and without tricks to make sure the helped? Meaning, no mods will over heat, with mods it won't, and try this more than once just to make sure everyone really helps? Thanks.
Sony should watch this video and should feel embarrassed at their engineering.
+Michael Ma No since the limit is stated as 30 minutes recording time in normal temp conditions (see manual). I recorded hours with my a6300 without overheating.
let me guess, you recorded in 1080p right. Try it in 4k, i guarantee it wont be last in 10 minutes.
Do you really think I use this camera for just filming in 1080p? the reason why people buy this one is because of the 6k signal which down-sampled to 4k and give a detailed image. I hear a lot of people got this "overheating" issue in warm country's. P.S. I had this camera before it was even on the market.
i think you already hacked this model, could you upload and share some video for us before it get worst..?hope itll helpful to us..
Don't the japanese commit suicide when they can't save face?
This guy actually gave a good tips to overcome the problem that others seems just to rant about! Thank bro, this is what I've been looking for!
BTW, turning OFF WiFi helps a lot.
Yup, good advice their.
Need to try that!
I think there's no problem in that. Most overheating issues that ive heard of have been for people recording for long periods of times
@@ColtKirwan That's what everyone is talking about...
Pau Trescatorce Awesome positivity man. I just purchased the a6500 based off the same opinion and logic.
D5 records 29 min 4k not 3 mins
@@ShajiCee so????
cage would also help when hand held as it would take your hand off the grip and alloy airflow in-between camera and your skin
Makes sense. I have not experienced overheating with my a6300 yet. That said I may still buy this for other reasons. What cage is this?
+skatertwig26 Just search smallrig a6300. You should find it.
that1cameraguy For sure thanks!!!
Thanks
what lenses do you have on the camera? and which wide angle lens would you recommend?
i think you should do a video on lenses for this camera.
Hey, nice Tips. Very appreciated! Can you tell if it is possible to record 45-50 minutes without overheating or even shutdown using these tricks?
Great video, but did you get 3h of recording out of it?
Buying a different camera is the best way to go. Had the a6300 for 2 days... Overheated on me outside in 90 degree heat (pretty mild summer day) in 20 minutes. Would not cool down... Tried the same thing the next day with the exact same results. Gh4 or G7 should be your best option because they do not overheat, ever
You keep saying 3 hours, where exactly was camera in those 3 hours? Outdoor under direct sunlight or shade? or indoors?
indoors was the test, if you try this outdoors in direct sunlight on a 90 degree plus day (my camera lasted around 15 minutes)
that1cameraguy mine lasted abt 15mins recording on HD. But that was under direct 12pm sunlight here in Singapore. That's abt 37 degrees.
If it is hot out it can over heat in shooting mode
Peace CM
Thanks!! I appreciate it.
I am doing research on buying a new camera. This was one of my top picks until i found out about the heating issues.
simple and brillant. thank you mr guy!
thanks!
How about using a vertical grip, since it uses a dummy battery and also extends the camera body. I use the a6000 third party vertical grip on my a6300 but haven't done the tests.
+Steven lam I might consider trying it in the future. I just wish Sony made their own grip for the a6300
Hi! Thanks 4 the info, do you think it works with the a5100?
Hello, when you install the SmallRig Cage, can you still mount the camera with the cage to a tripod?
+asafblasberg Also, even if you attach it to an external recorder like a Shogun, it will shut down after 30min?
+asafblasberg Finally - can you connect the USB to an Anker Battery for external charging using the camera's USB port?
+asafblasberg Yes to the tripod and usb battery. The camera will record pass 30 minutes with a Shogun.
PS the link you provided for the 'Small Rig' Cage doesn't work.
hello .¿ if the camera is turned on without recording. also begins to overheat ?.
yes, it can still overheat.
+Tyler Breeden Thank you. I did end up choosing the ADD for video work.
Someone needs to make a watercooled cage for the camera lol these solutions are pretty impractical for most situations.
+Majestic Skies That would be awesome, honestly.
Water cooled is less practical dude
What about a Peltier - Thermoelectric Cooler? Something like that in a cage or dummy battery?
I don't think you mentioned the settings you used for the camera. Were you recording with 100mbps, 4K, autofocus on, etc?
+Big Iris Productions Autofocus off, but it was 4k at 100mbps
Do you have any suggestions on a cage that can be used with the a6300 and battery grip?
I usually shoot outdoor in sunny condition. Will the Smallrig put the heat into my cam instead?
+Reggi Tirtakusumah yes, it will heat up faster
I plan on buying this camera. I don't plan on using 4k often; but if i do, i would have recording times of about 5 minutes more or less. Would overheating be an issue that i should worry about?
Is the cage's intended purpose just to be able to attach more accessories to the camera, I guess?
+Beer nMetal Yup, it's meant for rigging it up with extra stuff.
+cyigen85 If you're looking to manually focus your lens, and you're focused on video, the batis is not the recommended lens.
+that1cameraguy Im going to use the camera to shoot handheld videos 50% of the times auto focus....A big problem is that there isnt much to choose from for this camera.. What else can i get with 85mm that have image stabilization? can you recommend one? maybe from another brand that fits the e mount?
+cyigen85 There isn't any other lenses that I'm aware of. If you absolutely need this focal length with the OSS, then this lens is the best choice.
4:28, I'm assuming you meant the a6000 since you're already putting it on the a6300.
yeah, you're probably right.
Thank you for the helpful video. I have canon dslr cameras which have no acess to use external mic. I haven't got any help. Do you mind to give me any advice how to solve the problem by using any helpful gear if they is any available? Thanks.
would you buy the camera again knowing the overheating and the shutter roll? i'm considering it or the lumix g7...(or blackmagic pcc).
Could you try putting your a6300 in direct sunlight in 90F plus weather and try recording? That's where I have a lot of issues with the camera.
Hmm. Thanks for your feedback. Makes me wonder if their are variant cameras out there.
This is very helpful but I want to be able to take really long single takes so swapping out the batteries isn't an option. But opening the battery door and screen is a great idea!
Great tips dude! Thank you very much!
+Sidney Diongzon You're welcome!
Any link for the rig cage for the A6300. Had been searching for that
I just did a google search for smallrig cage a6300. You'll see several vendors pop up. Just try to buy one in your country or closest to you.
use compress air to cool it down it work for me
Excellent video and very helpful.
If you use a dummy battery you wouldn’t have to battery swap. They are about $20 and plug to a wall or usb power bank.
Sony now shipping their cameras with OVEN MITS
problem solved.
Maybe we should buy 4K camera from your sponsor Fuji
What lens do you suggest for travel videos on a sony a6300 :)
Would silver version help prevent overheat? Thanks
Not necessarily,
Most of the heat generated comes from the camera itself, not from the absorbed sunlight.
But it could probably help
+Evan Fotis Use an atomos 4K over HDMI to record on the sony A6300 and it won't overheat anymore.
+Evan Fotis It overheated unfortunately... i tried it with AC Power Supply Adapter, so game over for me :(((
+asafblasberg Hi Evan, i have to apologize for my post, It was an error --- what I FORGOT to add in this post above was that with AC power supply adapter, the camera overheated *when I recorded iNTERNALLY* 4k... however, I myself got an atomos 4K, just like you, and had ZERO problems with it, no overheating whatsoever... i PRAY it remains stable (is there a cross-my-fingers emoticon? ) LOLOL
ATOMOS is the only fix, the codec will be different, you won't use anymore the internal XAVC from Sony but the one from ATOMOS with a higher bitrate. The proc from the sony is the issue.
What external charger do you use attached to the camera while recording?
I just use one I bought from Amazon. Just make sure reviews are decent.
+hawaiianbraddah1 Awesome, thanks for sharing this.
Do you have any solution for the dimmed display when shooting 4k or 120fps?
+Straitline Cinema Sorry, I don't have one. I didn't realize there was an issue until you mentioned it.
I'm sure you'll be fine with short clips as long as the camera is not in direct sunlight on a hot day.
Can you do a review of the Sony a6400? thanks JC.
Thanks for the tips. My step are the Canon 5D Mark III and Sony a6300.
Great tips!Thinking about upgrading my 6000k for the 6300. Looking for a do it all len, what do you recommend?
Hi. If I do very short rush in 4K during hours it will overheat all the same? Like 10 secondes each time? I never film during minutes.
Salomon Mika it should be fine, but if the camera is on, it's still getting hot. You'll want to turn it off during takes.
Cheers.
Yes (well it's a 30 min limit), but you can get around the limit with 3rd party firmware (he's got a video on that).
What was the zeiss lens you had on your a6300?
+Sam_C 85 f1.8 Batis
Great tips, thank you! I really like to shot with the A6300 (especially on my moza air gimbal), but the overheating is an issue on hot summer outdoor shoots. Did you try the firmware update too?
Hello,
what is the lens on your camera?
Thanks

Just wondering, are people having overheating problems after shooting stills as well?
If you are in bright sunlight 90F + weather. It can. I got the overheating indicator shooting softball with it after 20minutes. It didn't overheat, but the indicator came on.
Share us the link where you got the rib cage
+Budleee Bazz Just search smallrig a6300
Do you think if you shoot in 1080 30 fps it can get up to two hours without problem?
+that1cameraguy OK, let me know... p.s. - this is what I used to provide AC power to the camera ::

+asafblasberg Damn, you're the real MVP. Thanks for doing this test. So in terms of a studio like environment, you should be alright.
This is brilliant and you're the only person online who covered this. Thanks for the video!!!
If you need really good stills and autofocus performance, the a6300 delivers on that.
does changing the file format help ? mp4, xvac?
Shooting in 1080p will slow down the overheating
that1cameraguy I am I'm using the a6000 and can't get more than 15 mins with it without overheating

It's too bad that we need to worry about this stuff since the camera is so awesome otherwise.
good tips. enjoy your a6300. love my a6000
+Stephen Soukup Thanks!
That was really helpful. Thanks a bunch!
Cuz the cage you use on the video wouldn't work with a battery grip would it?
Does the cage mount to tripods?
yes, it does
Does the battery door come off like the A7?
Good tips but shooting outside is a HUGE issue for me. The a6300 overheats in stills mode as well on a sunny day. My main purpose was is to use the a6300 on a gimbal so most of the fixes just are not practical. Very disappointed and might have to sell it or send it in to Sony to see if they can fix the issue. I doubt they can.
Yeah, it is for me too. The cage won't help much on a really warm/hot day as the cage will heat up as well. I do use the a6300 with the cage on the gimbal.
Hello camera guy, other then RIG can i use L plate to minimize my a6000 overheat
coz i cant find the smallrig in my country
For all the benefits of these Sony cameras, this is why I love my GH4. I did a 4 hour continuous recording session on it once, and I had to stop because I was running out of storage, not because it was overheating.
+Elemino Musgrove Yeah, I totally agree. Stick with the Gh4 if you want continuous internal 4k recording.
Can you give me an update on overheating? I'm either getting the G7, ATOMOS, or 6300
If you really want continuous recording and not worrying about overheating, I would get the G7, you can by an unlocked one with no limit 4k recording from a forum.
hey I ordered the cage from smallrig as well, how are you liking it so far? just a small question how long did urs take to ship its been 2 and a half weeks and I still havent gotten it in the mail
Thanks!
I chose dhl shipping it took 1week

It's a great little cam, but that overheating issue plagues a lot of us.
give a link where to buy cage rig? please
+Aleks Wien www.smallrig.com/
Wonderful, awesome tip.
Do you need the 4k?
I see where you're going with that question. Nope I don't do any video shooting. However the 80D is like lugging a brick around when I'm in Europe shooting for hours. Hence looking for a lighter and compact camera like the A6300. The 80D also makes you looks like an American tourist and screaming to please rob me. =) On the flip side, Canon shoots amazing shots and has many pro.
If that's the case, go for the a6300. You get great image quality. Just bring a few extra batteries. If you're willing to learn the nuances of that camera, you'll really like the a6300.
i have a question , does the camera overheat at 1080p and is this any good for youtube / vlogging ?
It's less likely to overheat in 1080p. If you place the camera on a really hot day in direct sunlight, then yes, it'll overheat. But day to day shooting with at 1080p you probably would never see it happen. I use my a6300 for recording on my RUclips channel. You could probably use it for blogging, you'd probably want to get the Sony 10-18 lens. The face tracking autofocus is solid on this camera.
+that1cameraguy thanks for letting me know could you link me the lens
www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/892389-REG/Sony_sel1018_10_18mm_F_4_0mm_Optical_SteadyShot.html/mode/edu it's expensive though.
that1cameraguy thanks
Does it overheat wen you record or does it overheat on standby mode aswell?
If you have powered it with an external charger it has helped too because the battery has not been used so it could not heat as well.
+Pádlo Productions I do use an external charger, the battery still heats up quite a bit. Unless you mean using a dummy battery?
Is there overheating when livestreaming?
Hi cameraguy, thanks A lot for your helpful tips! Do you know whether it is better to use external batteries instead of the 220V power charge cable if I do inside video recording, concerning the overheating issues?
