Having just picked up my a6300, this focus tutorial is an essential watch. Many thanks Michael for producing. It goes without saying that more a6300 tutorials would be very much appreciated. Thanks again.
Absolutely explained everything perfectly, i can imagine that your books are thoroughly detailed. Helped me very much with all the answers to my a6300 focusing problems.
I've had my 6300 for 6 months and only now I'm figuring out the other focusing modes, just stuck to continuous haha. This has been so helpful, thank you!
Thank you for this excellent video. I am a long term Canon DSLR (6D2 and 7D2) shooter but a complete newbie to the A6500 and mirrorless cameras in general. The A6500 focusing system was quite confusing at first but, your video certainly cleared it up greatly. Now it is just a factor of PRACTICE-PRACTICE-PRACTICE.
Those dislikes must be coming from complete nincompoops. I bought this camera a month ago and this video breaks it down better than the manual. Thumbs up for putting in the effort and hope to see more.
That's cool. Many first look videos are around. But to decide whether to jump from Canon to Sony, a detailed video like this is handy. Such an awesome model! She is such a trooper smiling throughout the video. I can only imagine how bored she is. Not that the video is boring, but I assume she is not a photographer.
Thank you thank you thank you and thank you thank you... went from a Nikon to a Sony the hardest thing about the Sony has been the focus menus and settings I have seen a lot of videos first one I find dedicated just to focusing
this is really very useful video explanation, thank you for you effort to do this video! i just bought new a6500 (switched from nikon) and it helped me a lot to get quickly up and running with this camera ... keep doing this great work :)
Punch-in on manual focus is super helpful. Focus peaking is junk though as you'll discover for yourself when you review your photos on a laptop screen at 100% or bigger.
I'm not going to talk sh*t about another photographer's A6300 class but your two videos on the A6300 are miles ahead of his tutorial.. His tutorial is 5.5 hours and I still haven't been able to get past 2 hours of it and I purchased it a week ago. I'm anxious to get my hands on your tutorial video.
As always, this video was phenomenal. One like simply isn't enough! You menu explanations are some of the best on the youtube. Have you gone through any iterations of lenses with this body? Deeply considering something better than my current kit lens!
Yes we still have it but people are reporting problems with Chrome or if they are not logged in to their account - please let us know if we can help: support(at)michaelthemaven.com
Hi Michael. This is such a great video for someone like me who is really trying to nail focus with the A6300. The good news is there are so many options fo so many scenarios that nailing it should be possible. The bad news is there are so many options that it's impossible to pick the right one 🤣 without a lot of experimentation and for that, I need a patient subject like Lauren. Perhaps you can loan her out for a day? All kidding aside, I do have a question. Sometimes, it's really hard to tell if you're press the center CTRL button with your thumb or not. At one point in the video where you're describing the peaking functionality, you say "we can even move this punch-in tool called the MF-Assist magnifier around using our directional pad" but it's not clear how the "punch-in tool" is activated. How did you call up the zoomed version of the image at that moment (aka "punch-in") so you could really get a close-up on the peaked areas. Also, for video where the subject might be moving every so slightly but never quickly, what AF-C speed would you recommend. My inclination is "slow" because if the person is only making slight movements, the camera is less likely to start hunting too quickly. Thank you in advance for whatever answers you can provide.
hi Michael, Thank for your awesome tutorials. I tried so many, but your tempo, voice explanation fits me. Well done. As I was following this tutorial, at the point you talk about pressing one time (minute play 5:35) on the center i'm getting a different prompt than you. On my first press is coming up the prompt Center Lock-on AF or ON Im not sure what setting is different on mine than yours, that I do not get the same results. Do you have a chit sheet for settings going folder/page by page? Probably that will help a lot, to do the on camera settings before and then as watching your tutorial we will gett the same screen as you do the presentation. Regards, Nick
best explained focusing choises of sony a6300 step by step, what i see and find here ,good learning video,so thanks you share your good work at here.I just want ask one question, what prime lens you recommed of first lens with Sony a6300,If i shoot peoples(portraits) and dogs maybe most,i not want kitlens, but not really expencive prime either? Thanks allready and keep going,i follow all your videos and learn really manything and get many answers of things what i not know 👍
Thanks. It was good. I'd appreaciate a tutorial based on video only as for still is not so different from any other camera, but for video I find confusing finding the right way to focus. Thanks
you skipped custom settings page 6 In 23:23 , in regards to the a6300 what's up with the custom setting option page 2 page 6? it says af system you normally can choose between contrast af or phase detection but its greyed out, why? it also is invalid with the lens it becomes white when I exit face registration but then after 2 seconds its grey again, to help its where it says s auto image extract page 6 custom settings
Nice commentary on all the ways to focus the a6300. I wonder are u going to make a video in the field like some of your others, like focus hit rate where u have the model run around & such to see how the camera works in the real world, those are really great & useful.
Lots of helpful information explaining how to work your way into the autofocusing system. I recently just found out that I had eye detection on my camera! BTW. Beautiful model, did you do I photoshoot with her? Would love to see what you pulled off with this camera!
By default pressing center button on my camera didn't activate focus are (it was doing same thing as half pressing shutter). Fortunately it's easy to change in the menu: Go to "Gear" menu, item #7. Choose "Custom Key (Shoot.)". Select "Center Button". Change it to "Focus Area".
When set up with AF-C holding the back button it works great but the button I have for focus magnifier when it is clicked I am being told that is doesn't work in AF - little confusing as it appears to work for you.
Hi, Good video. In minute 6 you talked about moving around focus point. But I have a question. Is there a way to customize a button to bring the focus area already selected? For example, I already selected a Flexible spot, but I want to move the focus to another corner. Can I do that without going back to the focus area? Canon has a button to activate the focus area already selected and Fujifilm has the joystick. you touch it and can move the focus around. I can not do that on Sony... Can I? Thanks.
Hi Michael, it is great tutorial. I have a question. I use A6500. When I press the select button the focus point locks on screen without arrow around it. I press the select select button again nothing happen. How to move focus point again? Current custom setting of select button is eye focus. Thanks
Hi Michael, thanks for such a complete tutorial. I'm buying this camera soon, and as I'm new on photography, I was wondering if I should leave the focus on the shutter button or just configure it from the start as a back button focus. As you stated, that setting is great for sports, so I'm not sure since I'm going to do just family pictures and landscapes. My question is: what option is more useful to start with for a newbie like me? Thanks in advance and greetings from Argentina!
I had same issue. Need to change it in menu. Go to "Gear" menu, item #7. Choose "Custom Key (Shoot.)". Select "Center Button". Change it to "Focus Area".
Great Video, I was wondering when you set up the camera for back button focusing do you lose certain features such as Lock on AF? Also can you still use the Playmemories remote through your mobile device and gain auto focus?
fantastic explanation! I have been trying to use my 6500 for macro photography of insects. But there are usually so many other things in the foreground and background that AF has trouble finding the insect subject. Manual focus with the Sigma lens is too sloooow. Do you recommend a way to use AF when there is a lot in the foreground and background?
I changed my center button around to another custom setting and now I cannot find what it is called to make the center button change the focus area around? what is it called in the menu? Thanks and sorry but I cannot figure it out. I would like to be able to change the focus area (green square) around by pressing the center button like you showed.
Michael thanks for your video. I've learned a bunch since I have been making my move to Sony. I have a question maybe you can help . How do I get my A6300 focus in low lights like in a studio. with ambient light and 100 ISO I can not see the model and it is hard to focus?
Great job! Someone finally explained it. That said, I miss simple controls so maybe back to a Leica or a Fuji XT-3 Pro :-) Minimalist and easy to use always wins out or overly-engineered endless options. I also find my iPhone 13 outguns the A6300 in this regard.
Thank you for this tutorial! I have a dilemma. I have received my Sony a6500 in the mail (body only) along with the Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens. Out of the box, the lens (or maybe the camera?) refuses to focus at all. It remains very blurry no matter how many times I gently press the shutter button in order to get it to focus. Did I get a dud or am I doing something wrong? Thank you!
Pls do Canon EOS M5 focusing sistem review comparing with Sony A6***. I realy dont know what to buy because i dont know how good is AF for sport action on M5.
Help--Did you somehow change your center button to trigger focus point selection? Even after a settings reset, mine is defaulted to "Standard Focus". I can change it to "Focus Area", but that just brings up the focus area menu, and I have to select "Flexible Spot: M" from that menu. I'd really like to have it automatically jump to point selection like you said yours does. Thanks.
Very very informative but, I ain't the sharpest bowling ball but I found it goes a little to fast. I have to stop go back make notes, rinse and repeat. Overall well done.
Hi, i have a question. If i want to focus multiple subjects like 2 or more people in stills what focus settings should i set and still maintain depth of field?

This is the best explanation I've ever encountered!!! Thank you so much!!!
Thank you for making this video

Just switched from canon and this answered all my questions!! Thank you!!
Excellent video overview. Very valuable for new a6300 users. Keep it up. More please.
Wow best explanation tutorial I saw on here regarding this camera

This is extremely well explained. I finally understood the whole focusing deal. thank you so much!
Punch-in on manual focus is super helpful. Focus peaking is junk though as you'll discover for yourself when you review your photos on a laptop screen at 100% or bigger.
but the autofocus is really good with native sony lense not adapter lenses
what a great tutorial on a6300 focusing system! thanks for sharing it!!
Thank you so much. Learned so much more about by camera.
So well explained. Best on RUclips.
You sir are a scholar. Thank you very much! Learnt so much with this video!
Kind regards,
your video really help for me and i decide to buy A6300 later, hope you can share more tutorial!!
Great information. Thanks Michael.
Nicely done, well thought-out video
I like that camera. I would buy one except for the over heating issues. It seem like a great except for over heating all the time.

Best explanation of focusing I saw here. How did you cope with the overheating that appeared so many times?
It was from the lights we were using. Just shut it off and let it cool down.
+MichaelTheMentor great, not a big deal then!

Both cameras A6300 and A6500 have got the same AF system? You have just demonstrated for the A6300. TIA
Yes
Thanks, this helped me a ton!
this was helpful, thanks so much
an epic shootout of a6300 would be great, it need it badly to decide.
Thank you so much.
Hi Michael, will there be more a6300 tutorials?
Most excellent! Thankyouthankyouthankyou.
I notice the temperature warning came on, did it overheat?
Very good tutorial!!!1000%:)))))))
Very cool video! How does the focusing system performs capturing stills in a low light situation like weddings?
Very well. Please check out my a6300 epic shootout for that test- thank you!
Nice! I currently have the A7ii & wanted to know will the 6300 give better low light focus or as a 2nd body?
+Kurby Brown the focusing systems are far superior
The education you are provide is far superior than the competitors; I've been a customer since the Canon 40D LOL; thank you!!!
Thank you for your continued support Kurby- Much appreciated!
How do I get the focusing square to appear? When I press the center of the wheel, it does not appear like it did in the video.
Hi Michael, it is great tutorial. I have a question.
I use A6500. When I press the select button the focus point locks on screen without arrow around it.
I press the select select button again nothing happen.
How to move focus point again?
Current custom setting of select button is eye focus.
Thanks
leo hu touch the monitor
Thanks for your reply. Is it possible still using wheel to move the focus point?
In your tutorial you press select button again then the wheel can move the focus point. Why my camera cannot do that?
leo hu you have an a6500 which has a touch screen. It's the only difference between the a6300 and a6500 for focusing
leo hu why would you want to do that when you have a touch monitor?
great job

AF-S - deep enough DOF to get both in focus

That eye focus not work with sigma 60mm 1.8 and sigma 19mm 1.8 lensi, even those for Sony E mount lenses, why??????
