Car enthusiasts: Give us a back-to-basics off-roader! We don't want all that fancy stuff! Toyota: Meet the Land Cruiser 1958. Car enthusasts: Yuck! It's so cheap inside!
I think people wanted a back-to-basics off-roader that wasn't 60k, as people expect certain features to be standard on a car 60k+. People wanted it to be priced like the Wrangler or Bronco. Issue is Toyota already has the 4Runner for that.
Obviously they went all the way the opposite end. Theyre ridiculously riding the nameplate with cheaper materials. They went way overboard on that perspective
I'd get an used 2022 Grand Cherokee trailahwk 3.6. The land cruiser 1958 is contradictory. Hear me out. 1) Cloth manual seats, no sunroof and all that stuff, still weights 5200 lbs. The grand cherokee 3.6 (sunroof is available and almost all used vehicles have one) is 4800 lbs 2) 4 cylinder, hybrid and a lot of complexity, still fuel economy isn't better than the 3.6 Jeep. Also they tie at 60 mph, but the Grand cherokee is faster on 0-100 mph and top speed 3) Land cruiser was born for offroad, yet without air suspensions, approach/departure/breakover angles are worst than the Trailhawk. So is ground clearance, wading depth is basically a tie, being just 3-4 inches on the land cruiser 4) Rear space. No jokes, but a cadillac ATS coupe get more rear seat legroom than the 2025 toyota land cruiser I'm no toyota fan, no Jeep fan, just a guy that sold his Audi in europe and moving to US, is considering a spacious, offroad capable suv. Let me know what you guys think.
@@137hey You will regret it because I traded my rav4 for a limited 5th gen 4runner. No way im spending that much on a 4cyl ever and its WAY TOO SMALL. That especially being a first vehicle of the generation is gonna have problems 💯. But hey, someones gotta be the sucker to test it and its NOT MY MONEY.😂
I just checked out a land cruiser 1958 and it's very nice and the seating is very comfortable, but the interior seemed to have very low grade materials that kinda reminded me of a sentra rental car. If I buy a land cruiser in the near future, I would opt for a higher trim level.
This thing really needs the premium soft-touch materials on the base trim. It's straight up robbery for plastic armrests at this price point. Either give us more comfort or drop the price please!
Even the lowest trim, $28,000 2023 Tacoma pickup - the SR grade - has padded armrests and soft touch upper door trim. Given that the 1958 Land Cruiser has such a spartan interior I might as well get a base model (SR grade) 2025 4Runner and save $10,000
Toyota fan boys= I want the best longest lasting vehicle with premium interior and latest tech that also sticks to its simplistic roots while also incorporating superior off-road ability that doesn't use computers and flies for a super cheap price. They should sell lithium pills with these things for the split personality of the owners.
@4wd4Life-xs3id I'm not joking. I'd take an AM/FM radio and analog controls throughout as long as I have leather seats. I cannot stand cloth seats. It's been a deal-breaker since I was 20yo.
Everyone knew exactly what the base model Land Cruiser interior was going to look like for over a year now and the price. I don't know why ppl are complaining about it like it's such a surprise.
There aren't many other BoF midsize offroady SUVs out there, no one wants the Wranglers nowadays as they are piling up at dealers lots and the Bronco is just as overpriced as this. Also, I would trust the reliablity of this over any Ford and Stellantis.
Great review, these vehicles are well made and if $5k below MSRP are a great buy. I'm planning on trying to get a 2024 model for 54 ish, if so, I will make the deal.
I feel like Toyota cheapened the materials on this so the new 4Runner could be elevated. However, considering the average person is not going off roading everyday, an interior like this for 60 grand is such a deal breaker. It’s quite difficult to focus on what’s not hard when the entire interior is dark with plenty of plastic. I question, should someone get this or spend the money on a 4Runner? Though I will say, those seats bring back a little nostalgia from early 2000’s Toyotas I like that.
@@JosephPayton-m9g They absolutely cheapened the materials. I sat in this land cruiser and it made me miss the quality of my 4runner even more. Really not missing much at all except for the collision warning gimmicks on it. So annoying.
If this had leather and power seats, I'd be sold. That's the one thing missing for me. Otherwise, this car is starting to grow on me. The choice between this and a 4Runner will be a mighty tough one.
You’re going to be able to get an Off Road Premium for that price, probably with the option to get the hybrid engine as well. Not sure how Toyota going to handle the overlapping of what are essentially the same models
I dont mind the cloth, but for that kind of money, it should at least have some better tech. The screen, cameras, etc. And some nicer interior materials. I know its meant to be utilitarian, but come on, its a lot of money.

This is a solid $30K SUV. Wouldn't pay a dime over that for it. It's just not worth it. Acres of cheap plastic and low-rent interior materials, anemic overly-complicated and noisy (unreliable) drive train, really poor rear seat room, compromised cargo area due to poor battery pack location and 2nd row seats don't fold flat, annoying stop-start system that has to constantly be turned off, low-rent rear-view camera and smaller screen than the size of my cell phone, idiotic shifter, and cloth seats...for $60K? They've lost their minds. They can keep it. Smh. Now, if they put the drive train from the Tacoma TRD Off-Road in this Land Cruiser 1958, with the turbo 2.4 (NO HYBRID) and the 6-speed manual transmission, and the price was about the same, in the low-to-mid $40s, I'd be very interested. I can tolerate the crappy interior build materials for a lower entry price and a better drive train that I know will stand the test of time. In fact, this would have been the PERFECT enthusiast build for the 1958 and they'd have probably sold tons of them by now. It's a shame Toyota has been drinking its own corporate Kool-Aid instead of listening to their customer base.
I love the design, but the price and interior quality for that price are laughable. Toyota routinely makes some of the most expensive vehicles in their respective segments with the worst-quality interiors. I'm not a fan of the brand because of these issues, regardless of how reliable they are.
