My next door neighbour just got one of these (in white, too!) and I just checked it out in person for the first time. Honestly, at first I thought there's no way I'd go for the base trim, but the more I think about it, I think this is the trim to get. You're spot on with this being the "70 series we never got". In it's factory form, it's the perfect canvas to build these out how most enthusiasts will want, and doesn't have all the bells and whistles to worry about. Level it out, put some 33s, tint the windows and call it a day. I'm excited about this vehicle!
Personally without MTS, and disconnectable sway bar, I still think the middle trim is the one to get. MTS is really a big deal when you start off roading, and unlike previous years, MTS can now work in 4WD or 4HI and the previous MTS only worked in 4LO. So MTS is a lot better now, and not getting it with a 60k vehicle is not acceptable. Not to mention, the sway bar disconnect is huge for people who will actually do moderate off-roading. However, you might be able to add the sway bar disconnect, but that sort of defeats the purpose of saving money by going with the lowest trim. I still think Toyota needs to do more with nearly 60k with these LC's -- It's $57,400 with destination.

My favorite part is watching toyota fanboys tell people they spent 60-70k on vehicle that should cost 30k. They think reliability is saving them money, when in reality they are getting screwed from the start.
Oz Landcruiser 70 owner here: it's purely an emotional/cultural decision to buy a 70 and also a 58 from what you have said. There are far more "sensible" trucks/SUVs out there. But that's hardly the point. The Landcruiser 70 is an icon as is the Corvette, the Mustang and the 911...with the exception that whilst those cars have embraced change, the 70 has resisted it kicking and screaming...and that has result in 2+ years wait times here (in reality, you will probably never get one) from new car dealers or 25%+ premiums for lightly used examples. But at least you know the brick like durability and the completely unstressed V8 turbodiesel will last decades.
@@KirkKreifels Sadly probably true: Toyota can't buck the trend/regulations away from such an inefficient engine (crazy part is mileage is better in not-too-busy city driving than on the highway - aerodynamics doesn't help but the ultra short gearing I guess is the main reason)...but at least I know this thing will still be ticking even when hell freezes over....😁
If this grade would be available with the moon roof plus better stereo, I would get the 1958. I was just looking at all three LC250 grades at my Toyota dealership, and was really impressed by those cloth seats. My favorite seats out of all three grades!!

i think it’s a decent buy but not for the money unless if u want the Cheapest plastic LC , for going from point a to point b for those don’t want too much tech .. but does this runs on regular gas or premium
auto influencers that criticize the door / dashboard materials because they think it is cheap are idiots. Go look at a Maserati, MB, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Range Rover. Look at their supposedly luxurious materials. Look at those cars that are 10 years or older. Their expensive dashboards and doors are all jacked up. An old Land Cruiser still has all their up interior components intact and looking a lot better than those luxury cars. You may say cheap. The Fact is, the use of that material is Durable.
Idiot is a strong word, and he’s not an idiot. I’d hate hard plastic on my elbow. But I also see the practicality of plastic everywhere. I do a lot of off roading and washing down leather covered in mud will make you sad.
I don’t think these pricings can hold up. First time ever I think we’ll be seeing even more depreciation than we’ve ever seen on all these new models. I’m going to hold off couple years to see depreciation rate.
It's tough for me to judge pricing these days as everything seems to be so expensive. One thing that would help me is to compare costs of similar vehicles from different manufacturers. For example, Toyota Landcruiser vs Jeep Wrangler vs Ford Bronco vs Land Rover ????. For the comparison to be accurate and useful, they really need to be very similar, ie. if 4x4 exclude AWD. Yes the Landcruiser is expensive, but is it compared to it's competitors.
I love cloth seat and manual adjustment, for the soft touch points such as arm rest it's a must, I wouldn't mind if the dash is hard plastic (how many time you do touch there) but paying high price (premium price) is just offensive to the customers
Love the look of it but $60k is still a little pricey and yes I know that's where the market is at. I wonder if the 4Runner will eat into the LC's sales since its a bit cheaper and still looks cool.
New Land cruiser pricing is inline with its rivals so its perfectly fine . New land cruiser is selling very well and Achieving figures that is full size version could never dream off.
Kirk, the jerkiness of the powertrain could be due to this being a modern automatic that doesn’t slip the torque converter constantly below 40 mph. You can’t compare it to the older Toyota products which have very very old-fashioned torque converters, and software programming. Those old transmissions tend to slip a ton giving you that awful slush box feeling, which made them kind of boring. These newer automatics are basically like clutchless manuals.
I recently purchased the LC first edition. I would have no problem driving the 1958 And I actually liked the cloth seats. For me the FE just worked better. The price point was higher than expected but it offers a lot and I'm impresesed with the leather / interior and the tech/infotainment. My last vehicle was an 18 4runner TRD Pro and to me the new LC is better in every way. Yes it has a 4 cylinder and the power is excellent and it feels peppy around town. Passing is no prob on the freeway. I haven't compared the performance numbers between the LC and 18 TRD Pro but the LC is more fun to drive and unlike the 4runner the LC doesn't feel sluggish at all. Just my 2 cents. If you have any questions I'm happy to answer. Thanks.
interested in how you are getting along with you land cruiser, just test drove one, but since it hasn't been around so long, its hard to see any long term reviews
@ I personally really like the LC. The engine is a bit whinny but to me it adds to the character of the truck. The low end torque and tech are my favorite features of the truck. I like it so much that I’m probably going to get a new Tacoma iforce max for my girlfriend. The biggest complaint that I could see on this truck is the price. You could probably get more bang for the buck with a new GX. However, when I was looking, the GX had a long waiting list and most were selling for over msrp. I preferred the vibe of the LC but you probably couldn’t go wrong either way. Also, I got the FE but I would have no problem with the 1958. That model feels like an old LC with modern conveniences. I really like it.
I really think Toyota/Lexus should start implementing some features as standard. That 8-inch screen is going to be obsolete for years to come. It would make way more sense to mass produce the 12-inch screen, lowering their economies of scale so that all owners have that great experience.
I agree with him that the 7 inch driver display is preferable to a 12 inch. Totally agree with you that an 8 inch main display doesn't cut it, especially since it has massive bezels to fill in where the larger screen would be.
Kirk, Keep rolling out these Ace of Base Reviews. Cloth seats RULE but please don't praise them too much as Toyota may be tempted to charge a premium for them.😉 The black, white and gray paint 'selection' is too limited, the 1958 should be available with the classic two-tone paint as well. The much maligned door panels are a preview of what you would get with the legendary 70 Series. In regard to pricing, has anyone looked at a Wrangler or Bronco lately? Heck, the unibody Bronco Sport reaches the mid 40s 🤢 I will be tuned in for the mpg run.

@rightlanehog3151 I'm talking about the features or lack thereof for $60k. If the new 4Runner SR5 is priced less and offers more amenities than the Land Cruiser, then I really dont see it being worth the price.
I test drove the 1958 and my 2024 4Runner off-road is built better and feels like it has a higher build quality. This is not a 70 series, especially with it's premium fuel requirement.

Find me a comparable 30k car with the quality and reliability. Such ignorance
😂
I heard the V8's time is limited on that 70 :(
@@KirkKreifels Sadly probably true: Toyota can't buck the trend/regulations away from such an inefficient engine (crazy part is mileage is better in not-too-busy city driving than on the highway - aerodynamics doesn't help but the ultra short gearing I guess is the main reason)...but at least I know this thing will still be ticking even when hell freezes over....😁
If this grade would be available with the moon roof plus better stereo, I would get the 1958.

Yes hard plastic is durable.
@@KirkKreifelsbut hard plastic! 😂 that elbow is going to be throbbing after a long ride.
Idiot is a strong word, and he’s not an idiot. I’d hate hard plastic on my elbow. But I also see the practicality of plastic everywhere. I do a lot of off roading and washing down leather covered in mud will make you sad.

The Kia Soul and Hyundai Venue are being discontinued after 2025 in North America
New land cruiser is priced perfectly inline with the bronco/wrangler specialy the mid spec and top Trim levels.
Hi Kirk did you hear about the LX700h rumors going around ? Wanted to see if you got any more info
I wish you had mentioned the 2 speed transfer case and a Torsen center locking differential.
Can you do a headlight output comparison? The Circle vs triple. No one has done it yet. Just curious if there any functional differences between them.
I love cloth seat and manual adjustment, for the soft touch points such as arm rest it's a must, I wouldn't mind if the dash is hard plastic (how many time you do touch there) but paying high price (premium price) is just offensive to the customers
From the cheap plastic and 4 Cyl Turbo, i'd say this is worth 30K at the most.
Im so close to pulling the trigger on this 1958 test drove it a love it. Dealer giving it 53k without taxes and so. Is that a good price.
What does everyone do a review in the cheapest model, is it what Toyota sends out?
for $10K less you can get a Tundra. I don't see the attraction of this vehicle at these ridiculous prices.
This only works with the works.
For a base model this thing comes with plenty of stuff. Also seriously why the obsession with sun roofs?
Can one take a ZX4R with this truck to the track? 😁

the ride quality may be better than the GX due to the bigger tires and significantly lighter weight (-400lbs)

New land cruiser and its materials are very good for a ultra rugged Suv. Full majority of people love the new land cruiser because this 1958 Trim level is a blank canvas for enthusiast who do builds. I don't expect a Rav4 buyer to understand that. Nothing personal

The Land Cruiser 1958 is way overpriced to have mediocre amenities, in my opinion.
Every 4X4 is 'overpriced' at the moment. Now that Jeep has hit a brick wall, we can hope for some downward correction in 4X4 pricing.
@rightlanehog3151 I'm talking about the features or lack thereof for $60k. If the new 4Runner SR5 is priced less and offers more amenities than the Land Cruiser, then I really dont see it being worth the price.
