Thank you for sharing! I love your videos. This also was one of my childhood favorites - my mom is Thai and my dad American. We called it "Soy Sauce Chicken" and my mom would also add a few hard boiled eggs into the broth. It was such a treat to eat the egg with the broth over a hot bowl of jasmine rice. Definitely comfort food for me.
I made this for dinner tonight, and *WOW!* Such flavor! And Mama Noi was right: "so tender!" I used the ketchup manis I made myself (because the commercial brands seem too over processed) and cut up a medium white onion and threw it into the pot along with everything else. And as a reflex, I added a few slivers of peeled ginger and a bay leaf. Served the chicken over fresh ramen noodles and some of that *amazing* broth. This is definitely a keeper!
Let me just say that I absolutely love your recipes. Made a few of them and all turned out delicious! I just finished with the beggar’s chicken and I must say that I love this dish so much! I was hesitant at first because I do not like coriander, but I’m glad that I went through with it because it turned out great!
I loved it, being more than 12 yrs married to my Thai wife. Love your mom! I'm going to cook this TODAY, because I have it all in the house. Thank you Marion.
OMG, Marion! I made this for dinner last night and it was delicious. I had to make some substitutions; can't get to the Asian market due to the covid lockdown here. Can't wait to try this again when I can get all the ingredients. Thanks for your glorious recipes!
My pot of beggars’ chicken is bubbling on the stove right now! The kitchen smells amazing. I recently discovered your channel and website and I am a HUGE fan of your work!
You two are so unique and loving. It’s always a pleasure to watch you both cook together. This dish was everything we thought it would be and more. I love the flavor of the star anise. Unfortunately we didn’t have any cinnamon sticks, so I had to use ground cinnamon, still so delicious. Thank you for another great dinner. We have made more of your recipes than anyone else.😊
It really warms my heart 😍😍 when i look at your chicken, it makes me feel happy! Thank you for spreading your family happiness to us! And also, thank you for the recipe 🤤😋 Sorry for bad english..
Love this recipe Marion. I'M SO HAPPY I got to buy your marinades and sauces at Coles today! Just marinating the pork chops overnight with your sticky chili ginger marinade. Can't wait to eat them tomorrow!
I like to experiment on the weekends with different dishes. I just made this with a few differences and let me tell you...this is amazing!!! Thanks for sharing!
Marion, you're really so sweet, I learn a lot from your with every video u upload. Sharing your family fav recipe with so much love amd sharing your mom's old pictures, loved it xo xo xo
I love your cooking style specially when your making your own paste. I tried so many of your dishes and it was really good thank you for sharing your recipes.
As Marion said, the original Beggar's chicken is different~ It's originally a Chinese dish of chicken that is stuffed with rice, chestnuts,etc... wrapped in clay and lotus leaves and baked slowly using low heat! It's origins came from the fact that a beggar stole a chicken from a farm but had no utensils to cook it in and this was the method he devised to cook it! Just in case anyone was wondering. :D
Hi Marion, I cook a lot of your recipes which are amazing and just wanted to know how your chicken came out so much darker? Also what can you do with the left over broth? Thanks
My friends Mom is Chinese and makes a version of this that is amazing. My friend and I tried to replicate it, but couldn't quite get it right. Would love to try this version, too! It looks great!
Made this tonight, it came out great. Couldn't find sweet soy sauce anywhere, so I used terriykai and cut it with soy sauce.... Probably not the best direct match but it shared some of the ingredients with the sweet soy sauce she was readily available. I couldn't get the skin to look like yours, it was pretty soft, but I noticed in the video it was cooked breast up (the whole time?) but the recipe says breast down and then flip - suggestion? Definitely will try to make this again (with the right ingredients).
Mine was about 1.5kg :-) If yours is bigger or smaller you can adjust the cooking time :-) You want to cook it until you can see the leg meat is starting to pull away from the bone and the meat is very tender.
I will never go and buy Soy Chicken, thanks so much for a great, easy to follow recipe Marion! Love all your recipes! Love to you and your family most especially to Mama Noi xoxox
I think it's nicer to thicken the sauce before u pour it. That's how I saw the Chinese chef did. I have tried too . It comes more shinny on the skin of the chicken . 👍👍
Hi Marion! Love watching your videos. I have a question regarding coriander; I am part of a percentage of the population that tastes coriander as soapy. For me it's a really foul taste that I have tried my best to get used to and appreciate but couldn't. Since quite a few of your recipes call for coriander, do you have any substitute that you might recommend?
I have made this for family who are like you and hate coriander and they really liked it. I think because of the way it is cooked and the longer time cooking it doesn't have the same flavour as it would have if it was stir fried or fresh leaves? I often use Thai Basil in place of coriander too and it seems to work well even though it is a completely different flavour.
Oh, man this looks good! I’m going to have to try and make this. Adding dark soy sauce to my shopping list. Can cilantro or coriander seeds be substituted for the fresh coriander? Beautiful looking dish!!! 😋😋😋
Herbs, esp cliantro, mint, parsley (except for woody herbs) do not do well in dried forms. The taste sort of change, but if you don't hv fresh ones, I guess it's still okay? `
This is absolutely recommended. If by any chance the coriander root is not available, you can replace it with the coriander stem. And if dark soy sauce is not available you can use oyster sauce. 😉
Marion, what would you suggest as a substitute for coriander? I know it’s a traditional Ingredient for this dish.. but I would really appreciate a substitute for coriander because I simply cannot stand the taste. I am so looking forward to making this! I will try with the coriander root in the paste
Hi Marion can you kindly post a picture of the sweet dark soy sauce you are using cause I can't read chinese labels in asian stores so I go with what an item looks like..thanks!God bless!
My chicken turned out real beggar looking 🤣 I think it’s important to vary cooking time depending on the quality of the chicken. Anyways, thanks for the recipe :).
Why do I always feel like I need to cook whatever you're cooking after watching your videos? That's how amazing it is. Keep it coming Marion.
me 2 and i don even know how to cook.

Hi Marion, I cook a lot of your recipes which are amazing and just wanted to know how your chicken came out so much darker? Also what can you do with the left over broth? Thanks
At first glance, I thought this was a roasted chicken. I can't wait to try this. Thanks to "mom" and Marion for sharing.
My friends Mom is Chinese and makes a version of this that is amazing. My friend and I tried to replicate it, but couldn't quite get it right. Would love to try this version, too! It looks great!
That looks easy enough for me to give it a go! Thank you!

It surely look scrumptious. I’m going to try this recipe but wondering how many pound of a whole chicken you use for this recipe.
Mine was about 1.5kg :-) If yours is bigger or smaller you can adjust the cooking time :-) You want to cook it until you can see the leg meat is starting to pull away from the bone and the meat is very tender.
I love to try this !

I think in Thai we actually called it Khai Pa-Lo or chicken stew. Anyways, your recipes always make me want to get out and cook! ❤
I’m going to try this on Wednesday :) need some good comfort food while this crazy pandemic is happening ☺️

Cilantro = fresh coriander. Cilantro is the leaves of coriander plant
@@PjhchaseI had intended to add the word “dried” cilantro or coriander seeds because I always have those.
Herbs, esp cliantro, mint, parsley (except for woody herbs) do not do well in dried forms. The taste sort of change, but if you don't hv fresh ones, I guess it's still okay? `
Marion m wondering what will compliment this dish like noodles or rice or bread..plz help me dear coz I want to make this amazing dish of urs..
The 3 infamous ingredients garlic, coriander root, and white peppercorns are called the 3 kings! It's so refreshing to see this used in your video!
Interesting, I've heard it called สามสหาย "sahm sahai" or สามเกฺลอ "sahm gleur"(3 friends) but never 3 kings before.
I made it for my dinner with my boyfriend.. taste so yummy :) thanks for sharing this lovely recipe
did he asked you to marry him though? XD
Vince Navarro not yet so far ...haha
This is absolutely recommended. If by any chance the coriander root is not available, you can replace it with the coriander stem. And if dark soy sauce is not available you can use oyster sauce. 😉
Luv the vintage pics! Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to make this ( :
What do you recommend as a replacement to the soy sauces?
Marion, i have a question. Is it possible or an option to make simmer down the broth and make it as a glaze instead?
Marion, what would you suggest as a substitute for coriander? I know it’s a traditional Ingredient for this dish.. but I would really appreciate a substitute for coriander because I simply cannot stand the taste. I am so looking forward to making this! I will try with the coriander root in the paste
Do you eat it as is or with bread or rice?
