      you have to learn to be honest and not only to the people that you love but to the most important person that being yourself. I have been struggling for years with addiction. and the times I have have made the most progress for the longest times were when I stopped trying to find excuses for my actions.

    I'm absolutely loving these interviews. They're so candid and so honest, it offers a completely different twist on so many assumptions when it comes to the group. Paul comes across like such a humble and genuine bloke too. I've loved the Mondays from their Rave On/Madchester days but these clips have given me a new appreciation. Thanks ever so much.

      that's his 7 years of therapy. I remember back in the day when the Band was disintegrating Factory would pay for Shaun to get into top notch Detox & Rehabs whereas Paul was ending up in the loony bin, 4 times I think it happened to Paul, I might be wrong but over the years that's what was being reported. I loathed all the Band bar Shaun/Bez when they said Split up Happy Mondays, B/X said Split up for a couple of years then get back together but they apparently wanted Bez out of the Band or if he remained he only gets travelling money & Gig performances as he wasn't contributing Musically then Black Grape came out & everything was great again, to me it was near messianic but when they Split after Shaun taking their Glasgow Gig Takings from the night said he needed it to buy his Mum a TV, so Black Grape died & I started seeing Shaun in a different light.
      Trish dropping his Methadone in the airport sounds a bit deliberate to me, an excuse to go back for gear til..I'm a Recovering Addict you know an out when you see or hear it & the meth getting smashed especially with Trish carrying it seems like Shaun has her take his blame to not want to go, but he went so idk?
      the last Mondays video with the Band was Stinking Thinking I don't remember the 2nd 45 but Sunshine & Love was 3rd 45 from Yes Please.

    Great clips from Tony Wilson. Nice to catch up with Rowetta and all the gang. Those Mondays Mums are mental.
    I can only imagine how hard it would be to come up with lyrics about life, while surrounded by drink and drugs on a tropical island. The car battery story says it all.
    There seems very little spark in the Yes Please album compared to the others, and feels like they are just going through the motions of a slow decline. Oakenfold nailed those hits.

    I said once on here at the beginning of these i had too turn it off because i thought he reminded me of me..(personality & characterwise).
    Now im certain!
    All serious long term addicts are the same i guess, hes right about therapy... i tried for over 25yrs to get off Heroin & Benzos & this year i started opening up in therapy and doing the hard, hard work and its working, slowly but surely.
    Im glad i seen the mondays live 23 yrs ago... was a special time in the 90s & early 2000s.
    For music and the world.
    Cheers for this.

    hi angela! this might be a bit of a tricky question to ask since he's sadly not around anymore to answer it properly, but i figured i'd throw it in here anyway: was Paul's bass playing ever influenced by all that jazzfunk/britfunk that was happening in the UK in the early '80's (i.e. Loose Ends, Imagination, Level 42, Second Image, Beggar & Co, etcetc). bit of a specific/muso question i know, but would be great to know anyways, as I find more similar stylings between this particular strand of english funk bands in the sound of the Mondays rather than the usual US funk names they did drop sometimes in interviews (P-funk, Hot Chocolate, Labelle, etc). we all know acid-house started to permeate massively into the band's tunes after '88, but before that period a soul/funk acquainted ear might think of a link between britfunk and the mondays that may have not been properly ever acknowledged. stellar job you're doing here, cheers from Santiago, Chile!

    • @pigknickers2975
      @pigknickers2975 Год назад +3

      Good question, my guess as a musician is that it was really the 70s that inspired him the most, he refers to it quite a bit. I was surprised as I was listening out for that sort of thing. There was tonnes of British talent as you mention but purists go to the source?

    • @glisteningstories
      @glisteningstories  Год назад +3

      Hi there! I never heard him cite jazzfunk/Britfunk. If you listen to the early episodes he talks quite a lot about his influences - Funkadelic being a big one, Hot Chocolate being another, Motown and he personally listened a lot to the Bunnymen and New Order for his own pleasure. I'll see if we can get Gaz and/or Mark in one of the upcoming live chats as they may be able to answer more fully. Glad you're joining from Chile! xx
