My Happy Mondays story, I worked at HMV years ago, me and my mate were told to do a display for the sale in the front window. We did a big Happy Mondays display and wrote in huge letters on the window, GET BUMMED FOR £2.99.
I Really enjoyed this video James. Gaz tells a great story. I was in a band “Big Arm” with Paul Ryder some years ago. Like many others, I was gutted to hear of his passing. The questions you asked Gaz were incredibly respectful. Much love to you.
Much love to this man, talking about this. Life changing band for this Old UK head living in Australia. And a great interview. Gaz seems earnest and straight up. Could listen to him for ages.
Nice interview with Gaz. Paul was a great bass player, quite underrated - big influence on me. I'm lucky to have his old Ibanez bass that he used on Squirrel... and Bummed, videos, TOTP, GMEX.... Exchanged messages with him over the years. He was always gracious, friendly & humble.... asking me if I still had his old bass & to look after it.
In my pre RUclips days I bought the Call The Cops DVD and was mesmerized by the close ups of Paul's fretwork. I love playing the bass and really paid attention. And I must say this was a very well done and respectful interview.
@@larrydavid6852 Yes. And as an added bonus you get to see comedian Keith Allen dancing like a constipated gorilla onstage during the song 'Wrote For Luck'.

James, I’m dead impressed that good pals of your guest all know exactly who you are. You’re the most impressive channel I’ve come across in Brit rock & more widely in music this year. I’ve loved Justin Hawkins Rides Again channel for a while & he’s great & a deeply talented musician, a funny sympathetic character and roams widely, I particularly enjoy your deep focus, with a gradually widening scan. No faking what you do. I also get a kick out of the detective part of your character. Also your candour in sharing your take while not being an arse is quite a balancing trick. Nicely done :)
Another great video James, your channel is really taking off and you are becoming the RUclipsr that all the stars are going to want to talk to and that's testament to your knowledge and attention to detail. Someday it will be Noel sitting there (and/or Liam). Stoked for you mate.
About 6 years ago Bez started a political party called, We Are The reality party, and ran for the post of Mayor of Salford. I attended, and gave speeches at party rallies. He didn't win but he did get more votes than the Greens. Black Grape played a fund raising gig at Granada studios which attracted people and supporters from across the whole country. That's my sort of Mondays story. And if anyone wants to know, yes we All got off our faces and partied like it was the old days.
I knew Paul when were kids at school. Best pals for a couple of years. I saw Paul last August. He insisted we went to a cafe not a bar 🙂 He was a great friend at school and it was great to catch up with him after 40 years. He spoke of Gaz. My barber also knows Gaz too. RIP Paul.
The Mondays were a massive part of my life growing up in Manchester, as were a few manc bands back then. I was in my late teens and I blame my bad behaviour on these guys 🤣 Thanks for another great video
Oh yeah I was at the second Oasis gig in 2000 when the Mondays supported them - not just saying this cos he's on your podcast. but the Mondays blew Oasis away that night - obviously Liam was having an 'off' night to put it mildly, but musically the Mondays were superior: just full of beans and vibrance and showed Oasis who was boss (at least in terms of live performance). The dark energy was evident from the second Oasis strolled out (apart from Liam's earlier stage entrance when he danced with Shaun and flipped the bird to the audience, which suggested good things to come...). I remember sleeping on it and waking up the next day remembering how much better the Mondays had been compared to Oasis that night - even if it had been their headline show, it would've over-shadowed Oasis's set by a mile...they just got the crowd in the right mood and had a nice, colourful vibe. Sorry folks, but that's the truth, and I say that as a fan. Even when I saw Oasis play the third night at Finsbury Park in 2002, the Black Rebel Motorclyce Club blew them away (albeit they did far shorter set, and this was still much better than the Wembley gig). Maybe Oasis were just complacent and older by this point (essentially becoming more corporate and doing it for the money, which they'd be stupid to turn down), and the support act is just has more to prove. But on both occasions Oasis felt largely lifeless, a bit static, even by their usual standards. I will caveat that I think seeing them in the 90s would've been a much more enjoyable, rounded experience - judging by clips of the band playing on RUclips from the 90s, the gigs looked far more heterogenous (a nice mix of ages, boys and girls) and a band full of energy and passion - especially between 1994-1998 -, whereas the post-2000 audience, in the UK anyway, felt almost exclusively made up of laddy blokes lobbing pints of piss (i.e. not the kind of cultured or mixed demographic that makes a gig feel special, or where you might even meet your future partner). Wish I'd seen them in the 90s, basically, before they got bloated and started phoning it in. Having said that, Liam supporting the Stones in 2017 was great fun! Much more on form that I'd ever seen him with Oasis. That one time I saw the Mondays at Wembley, they were peerless! Twisted my melon man!
@@BlueValerie_ lol, thanks...I have noticed people's inability to read more than two sentences is a major inhibitor when you want to get some substantive point across. Re: Glastonbury 1990... The fence was the same in 1992 as it had been in previous years so I'm not sure there's any truth to your notion that anything changed on the perimeter at all. The big noticeable change came in the early 2000's when they put up a second fence around (or inside) the main one. For the record though, there were major incidents with travellers at that event. As a result, the travellers area that had existed previously was dismissed for previous festivals and security stepped-up. One thing I will say I noticed from the Mondays presence at the festival in 1990 was a huge increase in chemicals in effect. Drugs had obviously always been present at Glastonbury but, that year, the amount of folks either tripping or on E was impossible to ignore. A great vibe all the same though. And I pretty sure that the absence of the festival in 1991 was simply to let the ground rejuvenate. The organisers had done this (and continue to do so) throughout. And the second Wembley gig in 2000... Shaun didn't do The King for the majority of the support slot but there was an instance where he did croon out a little Elvis in-between songs (in Elvis shades too). And, yes, Liam did make a brief appearance, arms aloft, to embrace Shaun and make his presence known. Cheers. Another great podcast.
