EQUIPMENT and ROUTING:
What you see is what you hear. I kept the first take of everything, except the bass and lead guitar were take 2. Everything was being routed through my Fostex 450 mixer, and the onboard eq was being used in some cases. The Fostex then goes to an Otari MX-5050 Mk. III, then straight from the input (no tape) into an AVID MBOX Studio which is connected to my main interface, an RME Fireface UFX, via ADAT. Recorded and mixed in Avid Pro Tools Studio.
Voiceover mic is a lewitt MTP W950.
The acoustic is my signature D'Angelico (bit.ly/44eim4U) with a DI signal into a Warm Audio WA73-EQ, and a Sony F760 through a DIYRE mic booster.
The Bass is an Ernie Ball Joe Dart Jr. with LaBella flatwounds on it into a Warm Audio WA73-EQ.
The Body is a 1992 White Guy into a Bumblebee RM-5, through the DIYRE mic booster.
Maraca is also the Bumblebee
Electric guitar is a D'Angelico Deluxe Atlantic with flatwounds into a Golden Age Comp 2a with NOS RCA tubes, into a Supro Amulet running at 1 watt, mic'd with a Sony F760.
Shot on an iPhone 15 Pro in log, and a Canon EOS R6 with an RF 24mm L lens and a Schneider 1/4 diffuser. Video colored and edited by Kelly Oden.

where are the words?
Love the video! I always appreciate your detailed gear lists!
Cara você é demais ....parabéns
man.. OF COURSE i wanna more of this. great video.
That was fun. Now add a "verse" section or 2 in there w/o the slide track, send the file over to Carson and tell him, "dude, you have an hour, write some words and record a vocal track and send it back - I'll wait ...", and so would we.
We’re waiting Josh & Carson…
This sounds great
Josh... you need to do this!
Or send to Toni, she's amazing.
Do it!
damn that maraca got some motion
Josh, I'm 71 and have just started to experiment with recording music. I got very discouraged trying to record on my cassette recorder back in the day, but these new tools really open up some creative possibilities. Please post more sessions for us to enjoy. I could watch this process for hours. BTW, I absolutely love The Byegones. You and Allison create wonderful music together!
you were my third most listened to artist on youtube according to the wrapped clone YT are desperately attempting! heres to many years more! not of wrapped. of Josh Turner, specifically.
He was my 1st place artist by a big margin. Followed by Igorrr.
same he was my first i was like 0.7% of repeat listeners
Besides being a great song, including the ride-along, the video presentation deserves an additional accolade. Great work, Josh!
josh is a super talented editor on top of the musical stuff
I love the behind-the-scenes content - how about a full song walkthrough of your mixing process sometime? (fingers crossed)
Would love this too!
Me 3!!
Me 4
Me 5

Thanks for posting this Josh. One of the greatest gifts you’ve given me is just the window into how you make music. How you do it with friends, how you play what you enjoy, and just how it comes out of you. It has changed my music in a very real way and I have absolutely done more specifically because I was inspired by what you are doing. Thanks for this one. I’m going to go do a little recording today.
You should do more videos like this. Maybe give yourself one more hour and write some lyrics. I would like to see how creative you are in that aspect considering a short time frame. This was great!
I started with the end of the video, with the recorded full song. After the song my first comment was: It remembers me to JJ Cale. Then I've just started the video from the beginning and just realized, its "a la Cale". You are amazing Josh, thanks!
Josh, just as you identified Kottke regarding the bottle neck, we all knew who you were referring to. I suspect there will be a time when we say, “Oh that’s something Turner would do” and everyone will know it was YOU. Perhaps it will be your wedding ring hitting your shirt button for a little extra glitter on the percussion. 😂😊👏🏻
Ok - that was sick! Your talent really shows here, and your versatility is incredible. Anytime you want to do more of this is fine with me. Love the Bygones as well!
Josh, this is inspirational! I'm by myself right now and had your videos running in the background while I was preparing dinner. Then this video came along. Looks like dinner is going to be late.
The 319 cameo was a good one. Such a good closer to the first side of the vinyl.
Just wow! It takes me an hour just to fire everything up, get levels, tune up, find a pick, corral the critters, etc. The tune I'm just now finalizing lyrics for, I started in 2004. Suffice to say, you're a more than a smidgen faster than me. ;^) ;^) You're a real talent and inspiration, Josh! Best to you!
Great concept! Wish we had more of the process to hear the song building up.
I have a been a fan of yours since I was 14..Im 20 now..and this is probably my favourite video of yours..I love jj Cale sooo much...we want more of this josh!!
This is so wildly impressive for so many reasons. You describe it as a challenge, but was it hard? It reminds me of those cooking shows where they only have half an hour but come up with dishes that seem like they would require a full day of brainstorming and a fully staffed kitchen. The only logical conclusion is wizardry. Really looking forward to seeing you and Allison in MN in the spring!
This is fantastic. It's always a joy to get to see another artist's process. Also: your cabinet of sound gear is an amazing treasure trove.
I LOVE THIS - wouldn't it be wild if Josh became known as a Big Time Producer instead of the out of this world singer/musician/creator that he is?
Outstanding vid, Josh! Your creative juices seem to always flow at flood stages. Amazing talent you have and you make it look oh so easy. Us mortals can only wish for such things. Love that you are listening to JJ. He is my all time favorite roots artist. Even named a custom made Steve Foss guitar after him. Take good care and keep vids like this coming. All the best to you and Kelly in this holiday season. ~ Mark
Btw, would love to hear you do some more JJ. After Midnight, They Call Me the Breeze, and Sensitive Kind seem like they’d be right in your wheelhouse. Can hear those bass strings thumping already. Cheers. ~ Mark
Huge J.J. Cale fan. I had the great privilege of hearing him play in a a small bar in Spokane WA shortly after "5" came out. Bought him a few beer and we talked a bit about life on the road after the show.
You keep impressing me Josh. I would watch more of these. I would like to see how you and Allison work out songs.
always a pleasure seeing vulfpressor out in the wild
Wow. I'm curious - how much of this had you sketched out in your head before, knowing you were going to do this, and how much was "of the moment"? Either way, still mind-blowing ;-)
Thanks! I came up with the form/chord progression for the song more or less the day before, as well as the tuning for the electric. The rest was pretty much seat of the pants.
@@JoshTurnerGuitar What's the typical percolation time for a song, or is that a length-of-string job? Also, I'm now sitting here listening to JJ Cale, which is a first.
Absolutely you should do more of these.
I love this kind of behind the curtain content. Thank you! What a coincidence, I also had a cup of Houji cha when I started watching this video.
This was so fun to watch.
I dont usually comment but i have to say that i would love to see more of these types of videos!!
Well Josh - I just love watching you making music... !
I’d definitely enjoy more of that and if you could do one in which you explain a bit more what you’re actually doing so that non-musicians get a better understanding of the process, that would be awesome.
AWESOME! Gonna say just as I watch the intro, super excited for this:) - - - now at the end of the video. That was 12 tracks in an hour WITH THE CAMERA WORK?? Dang it. I’m begging for more. Even a bonus hour for lyrics lol. Also that Bass track my fav;)
Excellent. Fascinating. Now something with just a phone (or tablet), one mic, and one acoustic guitar. With or without vocals.
The best piece of equipment is between Josh's ears.
Been watching you for many years! You never disappoint!!! You’re a very talented young man!
Bravo Josh! 👏 👏👏
More please. Great Great Great!
"that's strait" - :-D probably referring to the fact that it was straight awesome. Love seeing other folks work flows like this. Thanks for sharing!
the first take of the slide guitar was also great!!!!
You certainly channelled JJ's relaxing swagger. Your slide tuning is interesting too.
Nice content, Cale was awesome!
Been a while since a video where Josh is onscreen playing all the parts...loving it!
that was fun - thanks!
Great job! I really enjoyed seeing how your creative process works with an amazing result. Bravo! 👏👏👏
Would love to see a follow up vid taking this song to completed song with lyrics etc.
Love that you’re just casually rocking such a lovely bass
i would indeed like to see more of this type of thing
Great!!! Kind greetings from your old Fans from Berlin , Germany! 🍀👍🏼🎼
Great stuff. Sonny Landreth vibes for sure.
JJ is the goat. Would love to hear you do an instrumental cover of the song Okie sometime!
Hey josh. Coming from a relatively new musician and basically brand new producer, these kinds of videos are extremely helpful for me; To see an experienced musician, producer, guitarist do what he does best is so insightful and helps me out immensely. I would love it if you did more videos like this! Thanks.
2/27/24..Absolutely love your work...& that 'Supervision' from the RedHead ! (oohh yeah 🎶 )..Seriously, you 2 (&others) have super good voices, guitar skills, harmony, rythem...all t good stuff! Keep on singing together & know i have >suscribed &👍< every time I find you on RUclips! Love hearing the blend & solo of your voices with your combined (fancy) guitar playing! A++ Stay safe in your travels to Heaven!😂🎉🍷😊
Reminds me of Lay Down Sally. Very nice groove.
you are the greatest young musician in this time. I hope we can meet us one time and will play some blues together.
YES! Would love to see more of this kinda thing! Love the body percussion for starters...
Yeah do another!!!
That was great...would love to see more of these type videos...if you ever tour in Texas I'd definitely love to go see your concert...hopefully you can bring Carson or Reina with you...yall are great
Hey Josh, great playing, and great video! A question I have, and something I’d love to see in a video, is your process for getting from nothing to where you are when laying down your first guitar track here. I can track the bones and a few layers for a song pretty quickly, but where I get hung up is trying to write something I like that doesn’t feel too derivative or like “the same old chord patterns”. I’ve got more lyrics than I know what to do with but laying them out to music, while I generally get there in the end, is the thing that takes me the longest and I’d love to get quicker at that.
More, please.
love yer E7 tuning and would love to see more
Way to go, Josh!!! You just keep me amazed.
More of this!
Some talent for one man! 👏
Outstanding performance as usual Josh
That was simply awesome, Josh!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing !
More of the Bygones! More Beatles songs like in the movie Yesterday would be great given how similar it is to your formation. Also a song idea that could be good is try to write a song together that sounds like something the Beatles would have done. Then it can be played at your wedding when you both tie the knot. You can have a wedding singer perform it while you both slowdance.
Yes Sir, more like this would be great! thx for sharing.
Sounds great Josh, very organic vibe. Can you provide a link to the uncompressed wave file? I'd love to hear it in full resolution if possible. Cheers
Thanks for sharing the process, so more of this would be great! A good practice for musicians and visual artists. Turned out nice again 😉
I'd like to see more of this type of thing
Loved it! Keep it up!
Thanks Josh. It was a valuable learning experience to see your process. I'd definitely like more from behind the scenes!
That was fantastic of watch one of these on a daily basis. So interesting to think all of this can be done in basically one hour or so. I think the biggest problem people have with creativity and producing something is actually starting. The need to have a perfect idea perfectly outlined is probably the biggest killer of creativity and spontaneity.
Grey hair (Figuring Out)
Just when life was turning mean
My first gray hair reminds me
That all is ending
That line is near
I won’t always be here
Thank you mom, thank you dad
My first gray hair just taught me
That you were right
Life does fly by
And I won’t waste no more time
Now I’m free realizing
that I wasted tons of time
That jealousy is too a vile crime
Now I’m learning how to put my fears aside
Trying this new method
Where I put together tight
My pure heart and my mind, and then I smile
I’m figuring out, I’m figuring right
(Chorus)
Now I know that I was never wrong about my gifts, about my riffs,
About my style, about my childhood dreams
Now I know, that I was just a pure and silly child
When those mistakes were made at least I tried
At least I tried to do things right
Back in the days, when I thought
I was better than someone,
never mind
Now I’m turning grey, I’m learning the best way
Now I’m turning great ‘cause I’m turning grey
Hey Josh, I right songs and though English is not my first language, I wrote this , would be awesome if you and Carson put music on those lyrics have a great day !
As a an old guy in his '70's I reckon that is as cool a demo of song writing as I've ever witnessed and I have been around some top musicians in my time.
Awesome video. Jamie Cullum does this test too with his Song Society video series. Learns and records a cover in an hour. Once you get better at it, you can get some good results. Enjoyed this 🤓
THIS IS musicianship. What a pleasure to wake up (franc) and watchi it. Thanks dude
Just wonderful!
Wow. No wonder you were my No1. on Spotify and YT during the year.
Any plans coming to Europe?
awesome! that slide part sounds like LA Woman!
please do a home recording walkthrough tutorial
thanks!
loved as always. hoping to see you in Dallas when Bygones come on through!
Very watchable and listenable :) Definitely Josh Turner vibe mixed with JJ Cale. Like it!!
Josh, you are a great technician. Truly another instrument to learn. Well done.👍
Dude thats fire !
Hell yeah buddy. Nice nice
Amazing. Really nice insight and what better than a bit of JJ vibes
i definetly would like to see more of this... i feel silly buying effects pedals to sound cool on guitar and you claping your chest and shaking some maracas can make this awesome jj cale based music... i think im going back to basics
Thank you!!!
That was impressive! Very fun lesson, especially the slide lead.
There. It’s a wrap. Nothing to alter here. Wack it on a disk, put it in the stores and you’re a winner. 😂
Absolutely everything the way you do it is so neat and done by you looks sooo easy! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful experience with me!
It was amazing! Thanks for sharing the process! The end result is so nice!
Fantastic Josh! Great slide work.
Could you please post a tutorial of your song Lucy? I’m in love with the song and would love to be able to play it.
Amazing as always Josh!
Love your stuff.
Great stuff
