At 5:45 I let out a “yeah” which spreads a giggle around the band. love watching us come dangerously close to losing it then bring it back even tighter than before. 10/10 giggle recovery.
First off I think it fitted nicely in the recording. Second, as Josh end up saying; “well, I did have a lot of fun..” that really shines through in all of you and THAT dimension is what make your music not only good but great😊
I know we all appreciate the amount of talent in that room, but let's also acknowledge the amount of restraint of these musicians! They make the song shine, not themselves. This is what I LOVE about this channel.
For the same reason I LOVE Walter Becker. The man always knew how to show off his incredibly unique sound in a way that would sing with the choir more than some little shredder with a strat lol.
Seems faster than the original and I enjoy what seems like a faster pace Hogan’s vocals are just incredible on this cut also. Really shows off his talent. Josh seems to have same mindset of the great ones, no ego and who can match what we need to make a great song
@@JohnNathanShopper Yeah, I love that Steely Dan did gorgeously slick music with subversive lyrics. So many seedy characters and so many drug references. In some ways, I find SD to be more subversive than Black Sabbath or The Jefferson Airplane because normal people listened to SD instead of the freaky people who were into the wilder bands.
This is an incredible achievement. To do this - Steely Dan's studio sound - live in an apartment, tight, smooth, and impeccably mixed. You are all exceptional musicians, performers and producers. We are lucky to be able to witness this in our age.
But the whole point of Steely Dan is that the records kind of say it all. Live shows were never the point compared to some other bands ( The Who? Grateful Dead? ). And the band was two guys and a large group of revolving session men.
@@spindriftdrinker I deeply disagree, man. All session musicians they worked with were preetty good to say the least, even live... On many show recordings they give it something special too, with arrengements, solos, guests and even actual showmanship from Fagen and Becker... If I could I'd go see them still.
Incredible sound in a so tiny room. But so full of talents. Everyone here is on the top. Included Kelly at the video ! Not so simple to get a place, but one more time she was at the right place to give us a good view on the whole group. It seems that the backvocals affected a bit for Skylar... Very happy to see you all in a sacred version of this song. Very impressed by Jim voice. Bravo from France !
Frankly I wasn't so thrilled by the song as much as I was by the electrifying and astoundingly tight sound of the band: great to have Jim Hogan back, wonderful (and bewildering) to see Julia Chen joining this talented lot (the always composed Adam Neely, the Joshuas Lee, the McKees...). And, of course, the invisible camera woman who gives meaningful video time to each and everyone of them... A great august to all the musicians (and to everybody) in the whole world 😊.
I have all of Steely Dan's released material, and I love the fact that the first time I hear this unreleased Steely Dan song is on a cover of it by Joshua Lee Turner and Friends. ❤
I'm floored! This video has it all: a lost track by a legendary band, some technical tidbits for those so inclined, a stellar performance, TWO Josh-Lees, a superb ginger singer and sky(lar)-high backing vocals - I love it all! 😀
This is unbelievable. I know Josh turned his tiny apartment into a kind of re-formed Abbey Road some years ago. But, gosh. Steely Dan. Am blown away by the precision, the musicality, the singing (lead and backing). It's just wonderful. Actually, it's way more than wonderful. It's a sort of miracle.
The lyric is "La roué steps out with no regrets", roué is French for "a debauched man", in this case, the narrator of the song who has comitted adultery (more specifically, the song is about the Profumo affair scandal). Great video guys ;)
You accomplished with a home set up, what was done originally on thousand and thousands of dollars in equipment and studio. Proving that its all about the talent, and you guys have that
My god! All of these young musicians are so talented and beautiful. And they have their fingers on the pulse of the American zeitgeist that matters most to our hearts. Bravo!
"Oh, you know... just a couple of friends stopping by; we're gonna jam a little bit..." Holy cow! The sound you guys get out of that little apartment! Quite a testament to how far small-scale equipment and editing software has come in the last decade or so. (Can you imagine: if the Beatles had access to this technology in the 60's, or Tom Scholz in the 70's, etc.) And thanks so much for sharing this song with the world. I love Steely Dan, but have never heard of or about this song. A superb effort! More, please!
So Steely Dan has been a solid favorite of mine for decades, then you throw Jim Hogan at me, 2 Joshua Lees, a Marie cameo and how could this have been any better? OH, I forgot about those fantastic dance moves! Thanks for delivering this treasure to us! Big shout out to Kelly for her work in capturing all this wonderfulness.
There's been rough bootlegs of this around for years, but you've all made a superb job of this and I'm sure this was how it was supposed to sound! Really well done!
Always impressed by Josh and friends music. I think I’ve seen that lead singer in other videos of Josh’s and he has an amazing vocal range. Well done by all. 👍👍🇨🇦
Living in New York, cramming all musicians in your small apartment but having busloads of talented people who can come and play with you and your 9 microphone drum setup. Wonderful!
The whole time I was watching this, I was trying to figure out how there could be a Steely Dan song I had never heard before. Many thanks for explaining it near the end. Please feel free to do (many) more Steely Dan covers! Fantastic!!
I don't comment frequently, but I just had to in this instance. The fidelity achieved here is mind blowing to me. Despite not being a top pick for me from Steely catalog, I have re-listened several times for the mix of this alone.
So good!!! Real music, played and sung with excellence now withstanding a fit of the giggles! Pretty astounding to pull this so well in a cramped home studio, but Josh and his eminently musical friends have been astounding me on a regular basis for some time now.
Great pocket, great musicianship, great energy - kind of speechless! So cool to hear, what's for me, a new Steely Dan song. The 'roo steps out! 🦘 Sometimes invented lyrics are instantly legendary! 😂
That was really great. I am of the generation that grew up w/ Steely Dan (not to date myself tooooo much, but I WAS in my teens, which we all know generates the music of our lives) and this rendition was fun and honest, and the musicianship like usual was, superb.
OMG!!!! I have been listening to a restored version of this song on repeat for the last weeks and it's so good. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this video. Y'all killed it!! Kulee baba next?
Wow this is amazing. I bought Gaucho the day it came out in November of 1980…I was a senior in high school. I love this sound and lived in everyday. You guys did it justice beyond my wildest dreams. Thanks.
Very nice job as always. For me however, seeing and hearing Skylar was the highlight. I’m desperate for anything with his voice and talent. Hoping he posts more songs someday but until then, finding him with you and Carson will suffice. His voice hits my soul deeply. Thx Josh, you’re a gift to the world.
From the jump, I was just waiting for them tasty taste backup harms... And they DELIVERED!!! killer work all around!! The tones and performances are on point. So fun to hear this tune un-warbly and reinterpreted!! My favorite unreleased Dan tune by far! All the ‼️❗❕❗‼️❕‼️‼️❗❕
So much fun, talents, pleasure, initiative, great video from Kelly, great vocals from Carson & Skylar McKee: love to see you more in these experiences!

The sound setup is every bit as important as the skills of the musicians and vocalists to the final product (as are Kelli’s mad videographer skills), but they are usually invisible at this end. Thanks! And, oh yeah, great cover! 😃
Thanks for the explanation. I’m a big Steely Dan fan and as I was listening to the song I wondered which album it was on because I didn’t remember it. It definitely had the Steely Dan sound and you guys did a fantastic job. I thought maybe my memory had gotten worse than I realized. Thank you!
Thank you, Kelly, for capturing and including the footage at 2:51. It makes me smile, good to see the often-serious (at least in their RUclips vids) Adam & Josh having a fun/cheesy moment!
