Awesome tips. Vocals are very crucial when recording. thanks for sharing your experiences and techniques. Happy holidays
You can confuse alot
I remember blaming my Behringer C1 for the harshness I keep getting from the vocals I recorded and it took me sometime to understand what’s really wrong and then realized Mic Positions is a key for better quality recording
That’s the first mic I ever bought lol hope you can upgrade soon my guy
I mean… it’s still a shitty mic bro, try to go for the Rode or maybe a Audio Technica 2020
Bro I understand your point but if you managed to get a good sound out of this mic then you must be a wizard
I ended up selling it
I can relate!! I was blaming the AKG P120
Just remember that bedrooms are the best rooms in your home for recording. Your curtains, beds, bed sheets, tables, and cabinets all work as diffusors and absorbers.
The first tip was really helpful in vocal production. Like if you want to layer the main vocals with a soft high octave texture vocals, go closer to the mic.
I record totally dry, no effects. So if you can make a dry vocal interesting and enjoyable, imagine it with a few effects - it just skyrockets.
Setting up my home studio over the past few weeks and have been BINGE watching all of his videos.
Awesome 💪🏻 If you are subscribed to the channel, thank you for your support!
I have the same kind of bing issues lol
Really appreciate this content. After many years out of the studio, I am slowly coming to all the advice I can get to do it right, and give it another go!
Man you doin'n great job☁️you've boosted many artists confidence without you knew that.
Thanks bro!! 🙏🏻
Another big thing is check your bitrate, I ignored my bitrate setting for a year. And I kept wondering why there was bad sounding frequencies and qualities of each mic I got and finally realized that I had my bitrate on my focusrite and fl studio way too low. Keep the bitrate and sample rate at 48000 and above to get the best quality sound out of your mic or if you’re using the direct input for instruments.
How do I change it
Agreed, I see a noticeable difference at 96khz.. The sound is more natural, smoother (more analog sounding)
@@edafrclick on settings, should be around somewhere
What about low latency monitoring mode? Would you have that turned on in logic DAW?
Glad to be doing some already and picking up new tips 👏🏽
I love how you put, it about quick you can fix them
Great techniques, thanks! I just recorded my first vocals (usually just instrumentals). It was a learning experience!
Distrokid is Fye! Always helping producers with copyright problems, love them!
Thank you for this. I was so bummed after creating the perfect mix, then blew the vocals. I just can’t grasp the interface but the tips were super helpful 🙏🏼
Glad I could help!
Damnn, definitely learning something new! Nice content man! Keep making it!🔥
Great video, very informative and straight forward, kudos 🖐️
pure gold hints- as usual - thanks
Thanks so much!!
Mistake #4: NOPE - that's not a mistake. I recommend recording with as few effects as possible. Of course, a compressor and a few discreet EQ settings on the preamp can be helpful. But: Basically, the singer should focus on his sound, intonation, pronunciation, formants and thus on his personal sound. Of course, the singer or the producer working with the singer should have an idea of how the vocals are to be used in the mix (hence the larger microphone distance if necessary, or closer if desired) - but basically, effects should be used very discreetly. Too many effects can distract from the actual job. I think this tip is too undifferentiated for me.
I agree. I've always encouraged the artists I record for to use zero effects during the recording process. This allows them to really find their voice and become comfortable with it.
Definitely agree with this.
Ya i agree too. But sometimes when I'm a bit nervous about a few lines in the studio and the producer puts some nice reverb on it, I feel a bit more relaxed and comfortable so I get what he means here. But personally, I can't put effects during my home recordings anyways because my computer will crash lol. So I have to change buffer size and add VSTs after regardless lol
It depends on the feeling the producer and artist want. FX may be required for a particular vibe.
A song that focuses on a true vocalist, needs minimal FX. Such as a Mariah Carrey song. But other genres, such as Trap & EDM tend to be FX heavy.
@@danpettimusic That is understandable though. And bro, I feel you. Haha. I had fl7 on a windows xp. A friend of mine who knows computers looked into my specs one day. He says.. Man, I don't know how you're making music on this thing. Haha.
I just started following your channel im a new artist I can tell you really care about what you doing 💪🏽
I definitely have over-used effects during tracking, so make sure not to cloud your performance by over-using reverb and delay during this stage phase! While it’s great to enhance performance, it can hide some basic flaws in the performance that require a retake or more time in editing.
I normally record dry but after hearing this.. I can imagine delay could get a bit messy and mean you would need to do more retakes but can you recommend I EQ and use compresser I'd use 1176 and LA2A then just add reverb, delay, de ester after recording?
This has been the most insiteful video I’ve found when coming to recording music at home. Thank you.
Thank you for watching!!
@@EdwardSmithMusic question, is it recommended to always keep my gain high or should I adjust for how I am recording?
Thanks for sharing these tips🎶
Thanks man!! I really needed tip number 5 lol. I've been sitting on some songs for yeeears 😆
Can you make a video on the effects you use on your vocals and how you set them up please?
Very informative and what I was after. Thanks
I'm no vocalist but your tips will be very useful for my streams. I always wanna be considerate with my audio and I can imagine going away from the facecam to scream out my frustration would be entertaining for veiwers
Think some have misunderstood the effects point. Good to hear how you set up for low latency etc thanks
Very helpful and real! Thanks!
Wow your channel is a life saver. I have so many questions lol
Happy to help!
what a nice video man, helped me a lot
YO! Great content and suggestions! Subscribed!
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Great video
Great tips
Dope content as usual
Thanks 🙏🏻
Great vid. How funny that the "old rules" of yesterday are easily broken for creative content these days. And it works! Engineering techniques that we engage today would have led to unemployment back in the 80s had we tried to pull it off then. No one saw this coming. That's why we seasoned engineers must remember where we came from; our humble beginnings usually still retain a lesson or 2 for us. Thx for your posts. Love your channel. God bless.
So true!! Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
I think older recordings without computers sound more original n interesting. What you think? Example, my Demovangelis :Cosmic Garden Renewal is one. Also my Demovangelis :Duty Of 3 in 1 on Google.
I agree, sometimes having more limitations can make you more creative
I've learned a lot from this video, thanks.
How to record vocals: Stay in the front of the microphone and sing!
😂😂😂
😂😂
dont forget to hit the big red button❌❌
There's directional mics, iykyk
Put the volume up
I just want to say thanks for the encouragement. I'm old and suck at this but I still craft songs and am enjoying the learning process. I do have songs on utube and iheart just because I thought as you said share the art someone may enjoy it. Or at least think if this joker can put this out, I can do better.. thanks again the tips are useful.
Thanks for the vid, very insightful
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you :) Great tips. Great video!
Thanks for watching! if you are subscribed to the channel, thank you for your support 🙏
Those are great tips ! I'd add, recording with VST effects running is very important not just to feel inspired, but if you are running effects like reverb and delays especially , it's important you hear them as you can use the effects to enhance the performance itself, timing wise . But of course, they have to be properly configured or else they can be incredibly distracting. So if you don't know how to time delays yet, better just record with a little reverb and compression, not much else.
I agree. Especially for those who hate hearing the sound of their own voice. I get that a lot when recording other people.
I agree. And it’s best to record the effects and vocals on separate tracks, so you still get clean vocal tracks and can even make effects adjustments/ changes later on.
i use a little effects while recording. If it sounds better to you, you're probably gonna perform better. Imagine recording my heavy metal guitar with no effects. No distortion, just clean tone. I'm probably gonna perform horribly. But give me sound that makes me more confident and I'll get a much better outcome.
Wow great videos sir really learning alot💯
Useful. Thanks, man.
Super duper helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
You advertised distro kid better than I've ever seen anyone embed an ad on this site, Right on dude.
Thanks bro!! 🙏🏻
I always do #3 and 5. I feel like I have a legitimate reason and maybe I most likely have a lot to learn but, I have a rode nt1 and when I record/mix the vocals they always have this boxed sound and the low end sounds harsh no matter how I eq. If I take too much out, the vocal then sounds thin and horrible.
Recording on a dry track or with VST's is actually a good suggestion. Me personally, I like to hear myself as to what it's going to sound like, so I tend to use VST's. However I have noticed that when using vst's, especially autotune, it does create a small delay (even with a powerful processor and A grade soundcard). This small delay is barely noticeable, so much that it doesn't bother me to record with it, as it's too small to influence my timings. At least so I thought, I have discovered that when using VST's I'm worse at holding the correct pitch with my voice (singing well, as far as I even can, I'm not a great singer unfortunately). Recording without using vst's does seem to improve my singing. However it's harder to create the actual sound I actually want even when adding vst's later on. Because apperently this seems to happen: Because my recording is less pitch-correct, the effect of autotune seems stronger and tend to create the sound I want.
Same goes for reverb or any effect, because you can already hear it in your recording you start adjusting your voice to the recording-delay and the effect to make it sound the way you want.
So I believe it's really up to what sound you want to create.
Also for anyone considering using Autotune, It's important to remember to check for a Low Latency mode, I know Antares has it as a feature. Waves Autotune has a lower strain on processing power as well.
I'd recommend recording on two seperate Tracks, one dry (muted) and one with input fx, that cuts down a lot of latency, bc input fx don't require as much processing power, they just get baked in on the spot.
maybe learn how to sing so yo dont have to rely on comp doing singing for yo
@@Lekaleino 2 others replied to this with something helpful. You only criticized so no one, not even you, benefited from your presence here.

Great tips for sure!
Recently went from an at2020 to a Lauten LA220. The difference is night and day. Having good equipment (guitar, bass, mic, etc) can inspire performance. Not always but playing an Ibanez gio vs an Ibanez ehb1005 with Nordy Zen Blades installed makes me want to play more and inspires me to improve my skills.
True to an extent. If an artist feels more inspired to "adventure" without necessary sails (skills) , you get muddy performance, which may be harder to mix than a straight, clean, pre rehearsed performance
How good was the mic upgrade. I'm rocking the at2020 and considered upgrading but am concerned of the chance the mics not the issue, and that changing it will be a minimal change Instead
@YeyMuffinsYey The AT2020 has a lot of high end and wasn't flattering for my voice. The LA220 has more body and sounds much fuller to my ears. The difference is night and day for me and is well worth the investment imo.
These are very good tips.
Great tips ...thanks bro
Thanks for letting me know
Many thanks Edward!!
Do you have time to answer a few questions? I am just now starting the journey to share my poetry/music… need tips on recording/attaching my poems to a beat somehow and making it naturally flow. Also a good mic to start with… just wanna start really getting my art out there and sharing my words with the world! Thanks again! Youre killing it😇✨
Hey bro blessings i love your videos n reviews
I appreciate that!
Very helpful tips 😊
What is that DAW you are using?
Thanks really appreciate it, just started recording so I’ll take any advice I can
Thanks for watching Christian 🙏🏻
Really the key is consistency and documentation of what works. You don't have to worry about distance, as software is wonderful for that. Get your levels right and remember your specs
God bless you Ed ❤
My room has terrible acoustics and I dont have money for fancy treatments. However, if i sing on the bed with the duvet over my head its brilliant! 😂
Great solution 🙌🏻🙌🏻
I appreciate this
Great Video. Now I can try to fix my Vocals.

Hello edward.. my question is, is my samson c1 mic and m-audio mtrack duo fit for each other? Why my vocals was like inside the box when i listen? Thank you, very much for your content bro 😊
Thanks for the video📹
Thanks for watching!!
cool nice love it amazing 10 out of 10 would recomend
This video was very helpful, thank you.
Also at 2:02, your song reminds me of the first verse of Numb by Linkin Park!
Thanks bro❤
Great video
Holy I need that Beat at 2:37 That‘s dope as hell
And I want to add, I disagree to use VSTs on your recordings. In some cases. My Laptop‘s not beefy enough to handle that. Had cases on PC where Plugins caused micro-freezes. It’s still CPU usage.
Doesn't matter what the mic you record in if you don't tell the recording artist that his vocals clipping at certain points. You could record on a laptop mic and mix it dope if you just give those basics out. Back in the early 90s there were Alot of amateurs but their vocals got mastered by geniuses. But.
Knowing when you're going to go loud or go soft is a key.
The mike is important. Certain mikes will allow you to move to various positions to capture the desired sound .
I have a few different Mikes and there is definitely a difference.
Here’s a session using Neumann Mike they are Dope
ruclips.net/video/WHoYRxtBGwM/видео.html
@@1515Media I agree mics are important, but the point I was getting at is if you have a 3k mic and your recording is sub par. It would rather render that mics potential less than satisfying affect that it was intented.
Positive vibes..great tops
Tips
Couldn’t agree more w/ #4. They expect me to be a god with no effects on the track
Ok, hold up.
I am only 34 sec into this video, and you've already shown SO MANY cuts. That is mad impressive, the content creator within me is dying to know - HOW are you getting that many shots? How are you planning all of 'em? Would LOVE to know! 🌹
Thanks man!! I spend quite a bit of time figuring out what I want to show in each shot, and then I pick which type of shots I want to take (close up, long shot etc..) and at what angle. I try to make every shot different by changing angle and distance from camera.
ay whats up hahah didnt expect to see u here
@@mangodotcom haha! I was just thinking bout ya earlyer today. Hope ur good. 😂✊🏻
@@adamcadby i've never been better bro, music is finally taking off :) hbu?
@@mangodotcom Haha just getting by 😂😂 Glad to hear you're good tho^^
some vocalists prefer to record with zero plugins & can deliver better without any eq reverb comp etc. i wouldn’t call that a mistake, but it’s good to know as an option.
Very good video
Quick tip: if your room is very shit sounding acoustically speaking, use a dynamic mic vs a condenser and mic closer when possible to get less room sound!
Was like watching all my mistakes over the past 10 years. 😂
Thanks😊
Im not having an issue with my mic, but with my audio interface lol. As soon as I try to use the built in effects it turns into a cutting mess. Using the Soundblaster k3+, and gonna get something more user friendly. The lack of software support or how to use it out of the box is just sad, and Ive tried just about every scenario except using a different pc. Gonna make a trip to guitar center on thursday
I would love to buy myself a pair of those new adams studio monitor or Yamaha i saw you review the other day, but here in Jamaica we spend all the time at work while earning the nickle building someone else dream and not being able to build our dreams because of low wage and inflation, i would love to buy one but USD TO JMD IS $150JMD THAT MAKES 1USD plus customs duty is about 80% of what any speaker items cost even for headphones. So its a sad situation for me 😭. But man i love your set up.
Are you a fellow South African, Because you're accent is so distinct (If I were to guess I would say you're from PTA or JHB), Great content by the way, you're very videos are very helpful.
I have a very important question: I recently bought the rode nta1 together with a focusrite scarlett solo 3rd gen. When I record everything works fine but whenever I take away the pop filter from the microphone it stops sending a signal to the focusrite, meaning that the circle which lights up when you speak doesn't even do that anymore. My friend has the same problem, do you know any fixes or do I need to buy a different equalizer thing? And yes I have the 48V turned on.
Your mic may be defective, I'm on my second NT1A and from my research it's something to do with a batch of the line, if you registered for the warranty they(Rode) should be able to fix it for you
For fl users use 2 mixer tracks to record 1 dry and one with effects
Pls what’s the best mic for recording neo soul and rnb or soul kinda sound. Note: something like “swangin on westheimer” cover by maeta . That’s a perfect description for the kinda sound I like
It’s verry important thanks❤
I always record dry. It's time to switch it up and bring some life into my headphones. I was taught once not to add until after the recording. What are the downsides... Wouldn't hearing delay put you off a bit... Adding compressors will increase db so I'm guessing I should adjust my levels as I would normally?
I don't sing. I rap just to clarify.
So I have the problem that when I position myself too near to the mic, my vocals sound distorted, probably because of the gain???? Is there a certain rule for the gain controller on the mic or is it just optimizing by "try and error"?
Sir, if I use the original Shure SM 58 mic With Universal Volt 1 Audio Interface. Can I get a good recording? Noise will not come in the recording ? Will I get crisp sound quality?
SM58 is perfect for everything.
What studio you use for vocals?
Good afternoon, I see that you love rode nt-1 5gen. I bought the same one, but at the beginning of work, after connecting to the audio interface, there are clicks and some noise and crackling noises; later the work becomes stable. Have you had any problems like this with your microphone? or is it a malfunction
Hi thanks for the video that useful I have scarlet solo4th gen and a condenser mic cm25 iii trying to record while playing dig piano at the same time. Condenser mic get the whole sound from an area ,I wonder how to avoid it while playing and recording is there any way ,using plugin, positioning mic?
Which gives you a good and naturel vocal m audio or scarled thanks
Thank you
does the distance mistake apply with dynamic mics?
How do I separate outputs? I use a Focusrite Solo as interface. My Presonus Eris, Aston Mic and DT990s are all connected there. When recording, I use the DT990s to monitor my vocals while listening to the beat. Then, I would like to switch the audio output to my Presonus Eris so that I can hear it in actual space. How can I do this without plugging things in and out? What am I missing here? Pls help :))
Very Nice Sir❤😘
Thats the great .. i need to learn all this in personal... how do we get intouch
2:15 I found it's best to turn the gain on 2 all the way down as well, otherwise you'll get extra background hiss through the Scarlett.
3:15 I totally agree, but the latency feels like 100ms on my monitor-mix.
i use only a EQ, Compressor, reverb and sometimes a deesser.
does your daw have a low latency mode setting?
