I remember blaming my Behringer C1 for the harshness I keep getting from the vocals I recorded and it took me sometime to understand what’s really wrong and then realized Mic Positions is a key for better quality recording
Mistake #4: NOPE - that's not a mistake. I recommend recording with as few effects as possible. Of course, a compressor and a few discreet EQ settings on the preamp can be helpful. But: Basically, the singer should focus on his sound, intonation, pronunciation, formants and thus on his personal sound. Of course, the singer or the producer working with the singer should have an idea of how the vocals are to be used in the mix (hence the larger microphone distance if necessary, or closer if desired) - but basically, effects should be used very discreetly. Too many effects can distract from the actual job. I think this tip is too undifferentiated for me.
I agree. I've always encouraged the artists I record for to use zero effects during the recording process. This allows them to really find their voice and become comfortable with it.
Ya i agree too. But sometimes when I'm a bit nervous about a few lines in the studio and the producer puts some nice reverb on it, I feel a bit more relaxed and comfortable so I get what he means here. But personally, I can't put effects during my home recordings anyways because my computer will crash lol. So I have to change buffer size and add VSTs after regardless lol
It depends on the feeling the producer and artist want. FX may be required for a particular vibe. A song that focuses on a true vocalist, needs minimal FX. Such as a Mariah Carrey song. But other genres, such as Trap & EDM tend to be FX heavy.
@@danpettimusic That is understandable though. And bro, I feel you. Haha. I had fl7 on a windows xp. A friend of mine who knows computers looked into my specs one day. He says.. Man, I don't know how you're making music on this thing. Haha.
Another big thing is check your bitrate, I ignored my bitrate setting for a year. And I kept wondering why there was bad sounding frequencies and qualities of each mic I got and finally realized that I had my bitrate on my focusrite and fl studio way too low. Keep the bitrate and sample rate at 48000 and above to get the best quality sound out of your mic or if you’re using the direct input for instruments.
I definitely have over-used effects during tracking, so make sure not to cloud your performance by over-using reverb and delay during this stage phase! While it’s great to enhance performance, it can hide some basic flaws in the performance that require a retake or more time in editing.
I normally record dry but after hearing this.. I can imagine delay could get a bit messy and mean you would need to do more retakes but can you recommend I EQ and use compresser I'd use 1176 and LA2A then just add reverb, delay, de ester after recording?
Just remember that bedrooms are the best rooms in your home for recording. Your curtains, beds, bed sheets, tables, and cabinets all work as diffusors and absorbers.
The first tip was really helpful in vocal production. Like if you want to layer the main vocals with a soft high octave texture vocals, go closer to the mic.
Recording on a dry track or with VST's is actually a good suggestion. Me personally, I like to hear myself as to what it's going to sound like, so I tend to use VST's. However I have noticed that when using vst's, especially autotune, it does create a small delay (even with a powerful processor and A grade soundcard). This small delay is barely noticeable, so much that it doesn't bother me to record with it, as it's too small to influence my timings. At least so I thought, I have discovered that when using VST's I'm worse at holding the correct pitch with my voice (singing well, as far as I even can, I'm not a great singer unfortunately). Recording without using vst's does seem to improve my singing. However it's harder to create the actual sound I actually want even when adding vst's later on. Because apperently this seems to happen: Because my recording is less pitch-correct, the effect of autotune seems stronger and tend to create the sound I want. Same goes for reverb or any effect, because you can already hear it in your recording you start adjusting your voice to the recording-delay and the effect to make it sound the way you want. So I believe it's really up to what sound you want to create.
Also for anyone considering using Autotune, It's important to remember to check for a Low Latency mode, I know Antares has it as a feature. Waves Autotune has a lower strain on processing power as well.
I'd recommend recording on two seperate Tracks, one dry (muted) and one with input fx, that cuts down a lot of latency, bc input fx don't require as much processing power, they just get baked in on the spot.
Quick tip: if your room is very shit sounding acoustically speaking, use a dynamic mic vs a condenser and mic closer when possible to get less room sound!
As always, you do an excellent job of setting the stage and articulating your points. In this video, I especially loved your point about blaming microphones. I think older recordings without computers sound more original n interesting. What you think? Example, my Demovangelis :Cosmic Garden Renewal is one. Also my Demovangelis :Duty Of 3 in 1 on Google.
Those are great tips ! I'd add, recording with VST effects running is very important not just to feel inspired, but if you are running effects like reverb and delays especially , it's important you hear them as you can use the effects to enhance the performance itself, timing wise . But of course, they have to be properly configured or else they can be incredibly distracting. So if you don't know how to time delays yet, better just record with a little reverb and compression, not much else.
I agree. And it’s best to record the effects and vocals on separate tracks, so you still get clean vocal tracks and can even make effects adjustments/ changes later on.
i use a little effects while recording. If it sounds better to you, you're probably gonna perform better. Imagine recording my heavy metal guitar with no effects. No distortion, just clean tone. I'm probably gonna perform horribly. But give me sound that makes me more confident and I'll get a much better outcome.

Biggest tip for any home studio people STOP BUYING EXPENSIVE CONDENSOR MICS lol those mics are designed for super dead sound proof rooms and recording booths and you can't emulate that with some blankets lol. If your making a home studio and you have outside noise (neighbors/street traffic etc) just get something like sm58 dynamic mic, you can get great recording in a shitty environment for recording of you use the right equipment for the space you have.
Recently went from an at2020 to a Lauten LA220. The difference is night and day. Having good equipment (guitar, bass, mic, etc) can inspire performance. Not always but playing an Ibanez gio vs an Ibanez ehb1005 with Nordy Zen Blades installed makes me want to play more and inspires me to improve my skills.
True to an extent. If an artist feels more inspired to "adventure" without necessary sails (skills) , you get muddy performance, which may be harder to mix than a straight, clean, pre rehearsed performance
How good was the mic upgrade. I'm rocking the at2020 and considered upgrading but am concerned of the chance the mics not the issue, and that changing it will be a minimal change Instead
@YeyMuffinsYey The AT2020 has a lot of high end and wasn't flattering for my voice. The LA220 has more body and sounds much fuller to my ears. The difference is night and day for me and is well worth the investment imo.

Really the key is consistency and documentation of what works. You don't have to worry about distance, as software is wonderful for that. Get your levels right and remember your specs
Ok let's be honest, sometimes you can blame the mic, hence a good reason why people go through different mics testing what's best for their voice hahaha but yeah i fully agree with this whole vid dont worry

Also a good mic to start with… just wanna start really getting my art out there and sharing my words with the world! Thanks again! Youre killing it😇✨
As a metalcore vocalist, I do not stand back. At all. Pop filter sure. Sm7b can handle the intense vocals, though. In the studio, not home but a professional studio, same thing. Up on it, get levels set, and go. Screaming is not as loud as people think. There's singing that's louder, frankly. Point is, the right mic can mitigate your distance fears, and harsh vocals do not need to be far away.
Totally agree! You definitely need the right mic and room acoustics to go close up on the mic. In a bedroom setup with a condenser, I feel audio clipping is always a possibility, but on the other end your vocal won’t have the same punch if you stand too far back.
I’ve tried to put effects on while recording many times. But I cannot stay on beat or keep the cadence for the life of me because of the delay from your voice to the headphones. Any tips on how to shorten the latency ?
There’s a setting in FL (options tab->audio settings->buffer length) it can shorten the delay a little-what helped me have no delay at all is getting a microphone and headset that plugs directly into an audio interface-then all my audio goes through my interface so i have pretty much no delay at all-Hope this helps!!🙏

@@micodin7779 When using effects, have them on a separate bus. That way you have clean vocals and a separate FX channel. That allows you to mute and adjust your FX independent of the vocals. It gives you a “dry” vocal if you need to do edits later or change FX, it’ll save you from having to re-record the vocals.
I always record dry. It's time to switch it up and bring some life into my headphones. I was taught once not to add until after the recording. What are the downsides... Wouldn't hearing delay put you off a bit... Adding compressors will increase db so I'm guessing I should adjust my levels as I would normally?
With two of the mistakes I disagree. Mistake #1: Imo intense rock vocals work best rather close to the mic, because that captures all the harshness well. Stepping so far back just includes lots of room resonance, which never really sounds good in a suboptimally treated smallish room. Room ambience can be added digitally anyways. For a consistent tone, I'm trying to keep the same distance every time. On the other hand, the setup shown for more intimate vocals is too close for the pop filter to work properly. Mistake #3: Having stepped up from a rode NT1A to a Townsend Labs Sphere L22, I definately have to blame the microphone for my sound. The difference is like night and day - any of you would notice it. An AKG C414 XLII, however, was not an improvement over the rode, despite being much more expensive. That is not to say that other factors are not just as important for sound quality.
I would love to buy myself a pair of those new adams studio monitor or Yamaha i saw you review the other day, but here in Jamaica we spend all the time at work while earning the nickle building someone else dream and not being able to build our dreams because of low wage and inflation, i would love to buy one but USD TO JMD IS $150JMD THAT MAKES 1USD plus customs duty is about 80% of what any speaker items cost even for headphones. So its a sad situation for me 😭. But man i love your set up.
some vocalists prefer to record with zero plugins & can deliver better without any eq reverb comp etc. i wouldn’t call that a mistake, but it’s good to know as an option.
In one point i can´t follow you 100%: The right microphone for the right voice is essential. For me, better my voice, the NT1a works much better than for example an AT2020 or even the SM7B. I don´t blame those mics, I use them all but choose which is the one that fits to the voice of the person I have to record. In some cases even the Fame CM1 was the perfect microfone for the singer...
I have a very important question: I recently bought the rode nta1 together with a focusrite scarlett solo 3rd gen. When I record everything works fine but whenever I take away the pop filter from the microphone it stops sending a signal to the focusrite, meaning that the circle which lights up when you speak doesn't even do that anymore. My friend has the same problem, do you know any fixes or do I need to buy a different equalizer thing? And yes I have the 48V turned on.
Your mic may be defective, I'm on my second NT1A and from my research it's something to do with a batch of the line, if you registered for the warranty they(Rode) should be able to fix it for you

Thank you so much for the sub!!
Great video man! I subbed! ❤
Awesome! Thank you!
Very informative and what I was after. Thanks
Ok let's be honest, sometimes you can blame the mic, hence a good reason why people go through different mics testing what's best for their voice hahaha but yeah i fully agree with this whole vid dont worry
Do you have time to answer a few questions? I am just now starting the journey to share my poetry/music… need tips on recording/attaching my poems to a beat somehow and making it naturally flow. Also a good mic to start with… just wanna start really getting my art out there and sharing my words with the world! Thanks again! Youre killing it😇✨
How is tip 5 anything to do with recording vocals? Just randomly promoting Distrokid 😂
YO! Great content and suggestions! Subscribed!
Great Video. Now I can try to fix my Vocals.
Glad I could help!
@@EdwardSmithMusic Dude, this is passion. 🔥🔥🔥 Great Tutorials.
This video was very helpful, thank you.
Also at 2:02, your song reminds me of the first verse of Numb by Linkin Park!
For fl users use 2 mixer tracks to record 1 dry and one with effects
what a nice video man, helped me a lot
These are very good tips.
@@Truck-Kun__ how do you record with effects and take them off after? doesnt seem to work for me on fl studio
@@micodin7779 it’ll be an effects button on the mixer track that’ll let u toggle the effects on/off…or if u turn each one off individually and the effects are still on then there’s a way to fix that too just lmk if the effects button didn’t work😼
@@imTrulyTQ I got a scarlet solo gen 3 as my first interface and it was $110 USD-it’s pretty decent i’d say and i’ve had no issues with it after a year or so
@@micodin7779 When using effects, have them on a separate bus.
I don't sing. I rap just to clarify.
Many thanks Edward!!
some vocalists prefer to record with zero plugins & can deliver better without any eq reverb comp etc. i wouldn’t call that a mistake, but it’s good to know as an option.
I've learned a lot from this video, thanks.
Super duper helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Useful. Thanks, man.
now i can make some screamrap music correctly :D
That advertisement to distrokid is sneaky. Why would you do that when you have youtube?
In one point i can´t follow you 100%: The right microphone for the right voice is essential. For me, better my voice, the NT1a works much better than for example an AT2020 or even the SM7B. I don´t blame those mics, I use them all but choose which is the one that fits to the voice of the person I have to record. In some cases even the Fame CM1 was the perfect microfone for the singer...
thank you for the video
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻

Thanks really appreciate it, just started recording so I’ll take any advice I can
Thanks for watching Christian 🙏🏻
ah so this is just a long ad for Distrokid.
2:10 - 2:36 Thank you so much
sickkkk just a distrokid ad
excellent points
Great tips for sure!
which microphone would you prefer WA-8000 or the TLM 103
I have a very important question: I recently bought the rode nta1 together with a focusrite scarlett solo 3rd gen. When I record everything works fine but whenever I take away the pop filter from the microphone it stops sending a signal to the focusrite, meaning that the circle which lights up when you speak doesn't even do that anymore. My friend has the same problem, do you know any fixes or do I need to buy a different equalizer thing? And yes I have the 48V turned on.
Your mic may be defective, I'm on my second NT1A and from my research it's something to do with a batch of the line, if you registered for the warranty they(Rode) should be able to fix it for you
what the software u use for recording
Hello edward.. my question is, is my samson c1 mic and m-audio mtrack duo fit for each other? Why my vocals was like inside the box when i listen? Thank you, very much for your content bro 😊
