Hi Mattie, Awesome tutorial! I've got a question: for a soprano (female) singing opera with a lot of super loud high notes (needing more boost for the mid and low range), where we also want to record video where she's not right up close to the mic (mic approx at 6-7 ft away), what would you recommend?
i am a bit confused... i am a soprano with a pretty high range and I sing my songs in high chords. The language is confusing, do you have any suggestion?
Nice overview, thanks! I have a C214 and find it a tad too mid-rangy and boxy for my voice. Whenever I try to give it more of that intimate, high-end breathiness with EQ, the recordings become harsh-sounding very quickly. Is there any model in particular you'd recommend as an upgrade from the C214? The WA-87 seems like the most obvious choice at a reasonable price. It seems to have a midrange-oriented tone as well, but you did mention it takes EQ very well, which isn't always the case with the C214 in my experience.
You said the WA-87 sounds so close to the U 87 that it is hard to tell the difference. Well the SM58 sounds very close to the SM7B that it is hard to tell the difference and it is 75% cheaper. It is great for male and female vocals.
Years ago when Elton John was i PUK recording studio, they made a comparisson of all the mics the could get their hands on. None gave the same good result as the Beyer Dynamics MC 840.
For the longest time I used a TLM 103 and had it going into my Avalon 737 pre….it sounded fantastic but it took a real long time to get the vocals to sit inside the mix….sometimes a couple days….then the Sony C-80 came out and I had the TLM 103 for about 13 years already so I could take a chance at the $500 price tag and give it a go….wow did it ever pay off…,I barely have to process my vocals after I go through the Sony C-80, my vocals are a lot more forward in the right ranges and just a little compression gives me a real high quality major studio sound….I’m still running it through the Avalon preamp. I have a few mics including the Rode NT1A and the shure Sm57 and Sm 58….i can tell anyone with confidence that the Sony C-80 blows them all away…including the TLM 103.
If someone with an untreated acoustic room purchased the Neumann 103, could they just throw a Noise Gate plugin on their vocal track to suppress all the extra sounds it would pick up? Or would a noise gate not help much in that regard?
Good question. Noise gate will work well when the person is not singing to get rid of that room noise, but while the singer is actually singing, all of those extra room relections will get printed onto the microphone and recording. When you go to compress the voice, you'll inevitably bring up the added room noise as well!
I have the SM7B and the thing is that my voice is on the deeper side, so whenever im processing I have to cut so much around the 100-450 range and boost the high mids it starts feeling a little unnatural, maybe its not for my voice or im not that good at mixing it yet, but definitely something to consider.
@@SoLao So I actually got a WA-8000 from Warm Audio and the sound was so much better right out of the box, even without processing it suited my voice better than the SM7B. I''ve still been training my ear and have gotten better at mixing, but still there's not a lot I can do when recording into the SM7B to make it sound the way I would like it to sound. Hope this helps!
