I collect movies, video games, models cars,sports card ,music CD's, regular books, comic books, and baseball caps. The reason I collect is because it's things I'm interested in and I always wanted to have a collection.
I started collecting Fully in the year of 2012 when I found star wars the original trilogy on vhs and that's my first introduction to movie collecting. Since then I've acquired about 235 movies I might have collected more than that since then. I was inspired to collect movies by various movie collectors Like @Cinemasickness @Movie Bug
Now when it comes to video games the only systems I collect for currently are as follows: 1. Ps2 2. Xbox360 3. NES Nintendo 4. Soon to come ( PS4) 5. Soon to come (PS3) 6. Nintendo wii 7. Xbox one 8. Super Nintendo 9. Soon to come ( Nintendo DS)
My first 2 video games I got into was Super Mario bros on the Super Nintendo and Enter the Matrix on PS2. Since then I've been on the hunt for each system I currently have and all of the games within them.
The main difference is that a collector will treat their collectibles with R-E-S-P-E-C-T while a hoarder couldn't care less where or how their stuff is stacked up or what condition it ends up in as long as they have it somewhere...
I've got 176 Aladdin VHS copies, and why you may ask? Something to do haha. Am I a hoarder? maybe? But they're all on a movie store display rack in my movie room! I also like to buy items that no one else would have in their house for example I have a Pepsi machine. It's all good conversational pieces. Enjoyed the video guys keep up the great work!

I think collecting for me started out because of the nostalgia, but later on, moved over to an interest in video game history and the games and consoles I never got to play. And it's like you said Rick, it takes me back to a time of comfort.
There's so many reasons for this. Nostalgic is one of them. We like to have them around as a display because they're part of our childhood. We don't need to play them just having them around just remembering parts of our life. Same as video games most of them we don't play but having them physical in your gameroom is just better than digital because you own them and no internet need it. Pretty much what they called a hobby so if your family or partner support you what you love then that's awesome.
For me, it’s the thrill of the hunt. I love finding a game or figure that I’ve been searching for to add to the collection. But also, I just enjoy being in my game room and thumbing through my games.
Nostalgia is definitely one of the biggest reasons I collect. I collect Video Games, Toy Figurines and action figures, Model and RC cars. I have 3 kids and to be able to bring out a game or a toy I played with when I was a kid and play with them that's one of the greatest feelings ever. I would love to have a full collection of Pontiac Firebird Trans Ams, not toy models the real things, one of every generation and model variant, but that would get expensive and I don't have the garage space for it. I do however own two Trans Ams now one is the "wife's" but its really mine also.
I think the difference between a hoarder and collector is the organization. When you have to trudge through your collection to live, then you have a problem. That and not being to let go of stuff in order to make room for newer stuff.
I was gonna say organization too, but you beat me. Rick, if you think you have to trudge through your collections, you've never seen a hoarder's domicile... It's terrifying.
This is the answer, lol. A collector will have things put away and curated. They are also almost always proud to show off and talk about their collections to others. They also can come to the realization that they may have to part with something that no longer has value to them as it once did to either get some money back or make way for something else that now has value. A hoarder gains a compulsion for collecting any and all things for the sake of having it. Once they lose themselves to their mania for collecting, their home simply becomes a storage facility for their "hoard," and basic life tasks (such as walking around in their home) becomes difficult as their home becomes more and more disorganized, if not dangerous. They also have an extreme difficulty for giving up and parting ways with things that have little or zero value to them. These types usually end up reaching a crisis point and selling off their collections usually down the line, at least in video games.
A lot of hoarders have very specific organization to how they store their junk. Like, you can ask them for a specific thing and they will go through a half mile of single-person lanes between towering towers of junk and hand you that specific thing.
Definitely nostalgia! My memories of my past are hazy at best but my memories of playing video games back in the day stick out. It was a simpler time and I miss it, especially the 90s.
Most collectors will at least have a dedicated area to tastefully showcase their collections. Hoarders on the other hand accumulate items and keep them anywhere and everywhere, which could never be visually pleasing lol... I just have a few tiny collections consisting of PS4 video game steelbooks, video game art books and comic book paperback trades 🤙🏽
The pure excitment in your voice is why we all collect things. 90s cartoons and comics are what im all about. Use to like records and old antquics ingeneral but since i had a kid i narrowed what i collect down to a lot of what retro rick here likes for the most part, im not into video games. Thats my wifes thing ha.
I collect things that I like plain and simple be it vinyl, games, movies, or skateboards. I believe that the point of collecting vinyl, video games, and movies is to maintain and protect these pieces of art in my eyes.
When you walk into my house you’re transported to the 50s/60s. The majority of furniture, paintings, decorations is vintage Mid Century Modern. I just love the aesthetics and built quality so I’m always on the look out for it. Then there’s my game/toy room and it’s my childhood from the 80s and 90s.
CD's - Vinyl - & Cassettes!! I love music especially the physical formats! I like to hold them, look at them, display them, hunt them out of prints down, listen to and experience them, and just know I own them for the rest of my days! I also love video games but I dont collect them anymore because my music hobby is too epensive alone. Great content guys!
I collect video games and OG Thundercats figures.I collect games to catch up on what I missed growing up as my family wasn't bought video games.I went from Atari to N64 when I purchased said 64 myself.Nostalgia and thrill of the hunt are indeed reasons.Catalogging is definitely fun especially watching the changing of values
I feel wierd sometimes but when I sit down and chill in my man cave with all my legend of Zelda statue and games I smile makes me feel super good. To me a hoarder is someone that can’t let go of anything that they collect and collect a bunch of items that they don’t even care about and has no value in your life.
@@MovieGuy0896 I would start by Ocarina of time or a link to the past, the good part of Zelda games you can play witch ever at anytime because they all have there own story to tell in a unique way.
At 2k games I am sitting near the crazy collector status. I like to have my collection for playing. I want anyone to walk in and be able to find that memory they want to relive. My gameroom is my chill out room and I love it. I collect because I love looking at the past and seeing what I remember and what I missed. It is a great hobby and I enjoy the hunt. There is nothing that can stop me.

Rick, thank you! I found your channel in August and immidiately started my game collection. My first go at a thrift store I found a NEAR mint copy of Mario 64 and Yoshi’s Island for $1 and a silver slim PS2 for $5. I then set aside about $300 instead of $10, which completely strained our budget and left us in fear for bills... But your guidance is proven true!!! I did the same thing you did but I hit those bigger bundles on Craigslist and Facebook. Our first 5 eBay sales made $550!! And there are $1000s of value left in consoles, games, and peripherals that are just for sale now! And now that $300 is just freakin’ snowballing to more value with each new purchase I make. I am using a 3:7 ratio to determine return on each item, IE: If I buy at $3, it must have value of AT LEAST $10, but obviously buy for less if you can. Big bundles blows this ratio out of the water!!! Aside from making money, I am keeping things I want. I now have PS1-4, Xbox original to One, EVERY Nintendo from NES to Switch, an awesome Intellivision collection, Sega Genesis and tons of CIB games for all of it! I don't even have room for all of this stuff! Today I found a SEALED Mario Kart Wii for $2 at Goodwill. Rick, seriously, thank you!
I consider my self a hot wheels, vinyl records, and music memorabilia collector. I started back in 2010. Now I have realized that some of the things I collect are collecting dust. Why? Because I have to many. So as of last year I’ve toned it down. Covid helped haha but I still purchase the items I really will enjoy on a daily/weekly basis.
You could say we were poor back then as we were kids and new toys or games were super rare (birthday and christmas, everything else was totally out of question) On top of that my mom forbid everything that was to fighting-related in her eyes. As a young adult i saw some of the stuff i really really wanted as a kid but never got. I realised nobody could stop me and now i could afford it. Thats how it started. So for me its a mix of nostalgia and trying to catch up on my childhood. Now that sounds sad, but it wasnt that bad ;-)

I collect Star Wars Black Series Figures. I have 278 currently, and I started in October 2023, and my spreadsheet says I have spent $10,489 on them (Freight not included). I am running out of shelf room, so I will stop at 300 which will pretty much mean no more room, so I will have to stop! ha ha ha! cheers for the video guys!
I collect tabeltop game tarot cards, high end headphones, headphone amps and t-shirts. Now I am working on my personal tattoo collection. The reason is I have an addictive personality. I get really into something and I want to know all about it. Watching channels like this make me live vicariously through the hunt without having to buy and spend things like this. For most of my adult life I was used to living out of a suitcase, so I didn't have the luxury of collecting things. The differences between a collector and a hoarder are: 1. Collectors curate a collection and have ideas about what makes it complete. Hoarders collect with little or no discretion. 2. Collectors get rid of duplicate stock. Hoarder's don't. 3. Collectors are happy to talk about their collection. Hoarders generelly are more secretive for fear of coming across as being mentally ill. 4. Collectors will loan out items from their collection to the right people. Hoarders generally won't ever loan out for fear of losing it. 5. Collectors will set items in special places and spend time with presentation and storage. Hoarders often can be distracted and will store things but not for display. 6. When your collection negatively impact your life or mental well-being in a significant way, it's no longer collecting, it's hoarding. I think it comes down order and structure when collecting, and not being in a confused state when hoarding.
I think as a Toy channel, I look at it like it’s part of my income nowadays. But before it was definitely about the nostalgia & just posing figures around Is so fun to me.
Retro Rick I came across your channel by RUclips recommendation and I must say I relate to what you said 5:10-5:50 I have a few things from 90s and like you said you take me back to great simple times I been collecting 90s hot wheels and some of my favorite vhs movies from 80s & 90s and just thing’s I like from the past I love nostalgia things.
I miss my childhood. I collect video games first and foremost but I have been expanding towards other aspects of my childhood. Pokemon, digimon. collecting is one of the last things I have that keeps me sane.
Collectors also want to hold onto things a mass of other people like and want in hopes that they can profit from the items as they become even more coveted and scarce. Collectors also do it so that they can share the amount of items that they have
I collect Toys and Games. Honestly because I had very little pocket money growing up. So adding a new toy or game was an event, and I never saw games as a disposable media. I kept them all, with the thoughts of revisiting these digital places again in the future. But I think now having them around is what fuels me creatively having all these references, stories and designs to draw from. Its of course fun to go out and find something new, and feel a sense of permanence as you add it to your shelves with retro games from your childhood. But yes that permanance also veers into a hoarder mentality of wanting everything and pileing it up without any reason to it. So I just try to focus on robots, and mecha games so I don't go too crazy. Lots of Transformers. But more obscurely, Zbots.
There's a lot of things I have collections of. Video games are #1 with me...(duh), but I am not really collecting a lot of games to keep them forever. If it isn't one of my favorite games, I just trade it to get more games. but only after I play it through. I have a good amount of Sports Cards, vintage Comic Books, and NASCAR Diecasts. I was getting a lot of Blu-rays, but I have been thinning out that collection a little bit. Only keeping what I like the most. I will grab anything Wreck It Ralph as well, I LOVE THOSE MOVIES!!!
I have to keep myself focused on video games. Inevitably, I end up extending myself and buying books or DVDs or action figures, but I'm not serious enough about it so they end up sitting and I have to get rid of them. Gotta manage my space. Now the only toys I pick up are like Mario Happy Meal toys or things like that because it goes with the video games.
I've always said "I collect collections". I actually don't collect video games (though I do still have my Atari 2600 and a bunch of cartridges). I do have a large collection of 800+ board games. I also collect PEZ, Star Wars, Power Rangers, Pixar Cars, Batmobiles, Muppets, Vintage Sci Fi toys, etc.
I agree we collect for nostalgia, it is our connection to our past and it is a solid memory we can go back to in the present and it is enjoyable. That's why I keep all my games. Its no where near a great collection like you and tendos but it is still part of my past and I love going back and playing them. It's like re-living your past. For a collection other then games I love Harry Potter and I do have a lot of collectable items for that. Collectors can see the floor for a start and know where it begins and ends. A hoarder will have a vast collection that becomes overwhelming that will effect them and their daily life, where it is unhealthy.
I collect what I love I have games I grew up playing back in the day there's games and consoles that I've discovered and missed out on I'm a huge Mario fan I collect anything and everything Mario related trying to get every single game I have a majority of them so far
You should both have a list of games that you're still looking for, if you haven't already. Make it public and see if you can find the missing games etc.
Going for a complete licensed nes cart manual box us collection minus stadium events. After some trades, I'll be needing around 120/160/230 cart/manual/box. Out of 680 of each, so thats not too far away...
To me, the difference between a hoarder and a collector is being able to understand when things are out of control being willing to make a change if it’s necessary
I collect things I love it's when I have a complete legend of zelda collection, systems, controllers, games if its zelda I have it lol I've gotten into limited run and super rare games collecting for switch recently. I have thimbleweed park, west of loathing, golf story, turok 1 and 2 dual pack, celeste, layers of fear, nighttrap, outlast 1 and 2 dual pack, and have doom 64, all the shantae games, ion fury and darkwood coming edit - one thing though every limited run release I gotta get all the cards for the games I buy and of course I need the gold card lol
Well Rick I think your really the one to blame for getting me back into collecting video games 😂. The $10 game collection has me trying to do the same thing, and it has worked out amazingly! Really its incredible the stuff you can find at thrift stores and such. Im very cheap when it comes to collecting, so doing it for free (or nearly so) has been a great alternative. Im Running out of space though because it's working a little too well! I have added 9 systems so far and who knows how many games. Keep it up man!

The simple answer to why people collect is it's fun ...whereas other things in life are boring..paying taxes, paying rent, renewing your license, changing your oil ect..ect..I know because I'm a serious collector of toys, comics and trading cards (sport and non sport). Without collecting I don't think life would be too much fun honestly.
Basically I collect my past. Any games, movies, or toys that I have positive memories with. It's the appeal of owning something tangible and part of another time you can almost live in again. Nostalgia strikes that bittersweet chord for me. I try to keep it in check though, and not hoard lol
There are worse problems than collecting cool nostalgic toys and video games. For me, collecting video games serves as a distraction from getting jealous of people with nice cars. I used to be a car guy but that is an expensive hobby, people spending thoudands of dollars on cars that they keep in a garage but In video game collecting... a thousand dollars goes a really long way. I'm proud to drive my 03 Honda because after work im coming home to my family and a sweet game room.
Interesting topic! I think that hoarding is also on the "eye of the beholder". Some of my friends and and relatives think I'm a hoarder bc I collect videogames and movies. They don't care that I have everything organized and nicely displayed. Whereas some think that it's the coolest thing they've ever seen and say that my collection and gameroom looks like a museum. Go figure 😅
I only collect disc based consoles or the handheld like DS and PSP. Main reason is space. I have a Retropie so don't buy any carts unless to flip. And I try to collect quality over quantity
I collect Manga, key chains from around the world, and video games that I like. I have a backlog of course but I start to return to PS3 games that I own like every Prince of Persia that released on the PS3 in order to complete them 100% before the remake of the Sands of Time. I don't collect video games for systems that I don't own, and I really don't want to start collecting for NES, SNES, N64, and Gamecube cause it will never end. I do have a nice collection for my PS4 and Nintendo Switch, which I focus on right now.

I collect things that remind me of my childhood. Growing up, I had a big GI Joe collection. When I was 12, my parents decided that I didn't need them anymore. I collect GI Joe toys mainly. My video game collection is also a result in a way of my parents trying to make me grow up before I was ready to. I often tell my wife that the video games and toys I buy are far less harmful than other things I could be buying.
If you run out of room for your collection, and things start piling up on the floor, and there is no room to move or walk without causing possible injury, and it keeps getting worse, then you have a hoarding problem.
I love videos like these on seeing other people’s reasons on why they love collecting. I love VHS collecting that’s what I’m collecting more of as of right now. But anything 80s and 90s VHS, toys, and games I collect I just love the nostalgia and emotion feeling I get from my childhood finding these things. I collect mostly videogames , but i have other collection ( Pokemon Cards , Action Figures , Comics , Vinyl Records ) i'm almost 53 years old , and collect because these things relive my immagination , when i play , i return as a child , when dayreaming to be the hero of my games. I don't have a game room because my house is small , but i don't bother. I not like labeling people for their behavior , i and others collect because we want to. Is not the object iitself , is the motivation behind. Collect and don't mind to seems strange or weird for other people , this is my mantra in the past and the future. 😁😁😁

This video messed me up. I was confused for a minute, "wait, tendo didn't leave the state again yet." Lol then a realized the face hair was missing again. I think hoarding is when you stop organizing and admiring your things, that's when it stops being a collection and starts being a hoard.
Boredom. I love games but the problem for me is that I only love about 1 out of every 1000 games released. For me collecting is a side quest to keep me in the hobby. It is sentimental and nostalgic but most of all I just like to own stuff, to hold it in my hand and know that I spent my money on something that has a bit of value compared to say buying jewelry that goes from 2000 dollars to 500.
I just collect original lion king vhs's. One day i decided i just wanted atleast a box full of lion king vhs. Luckily they're only 10c each at a thrift store i go to so im not breaking bank every time i go.
I thought I was collecting because of the child hood thing but what I have realized is that collecting brings people together through UTube etc. collectors can make great friendships through the common interests of collecting and everybody is also learning from one another. I wanna know why my goodwill don’t look like the ones you guys go to the one I visited didn’t have no games at all the four shelves with random items I swear it looked close to the scene probably worse then the napoleon dynamite thrift store scene with random outdated crap it it always has the same smell I remember going there as a kid with my mom I always remember I didn’t like going there it smelled and made my eyes itch when I went in a week ago as soon as I enter the same smell hit me in my face I remembered it right away
I think the difference between hoarding and collecting tending to the stuff, if that makes sense? A collection is well taken care of (for the most part, sometimes things get away from us), it’s in some kind of order or condition. When I think of a hoarder I think of a messy pile of stuff. Thank you for the channel.....just as I thought folk were going shitball crazy...I come to some sanity. I currently collect heaps of standard UK (where I am..Scotalnd) PS Vita games and Wii U games..got a couple of collector's versions on both platforms.. got about 100 vita games and almost 50 wii u games...no intention of selling them just yet
life can be hard, I completely agree with collecting being a release from the daily stressors. That really goes for any hobby, it’s meant to bring you joy and be somewhat therapeutic. I enjoy a variety of things and always try new things sometimes I make up new hobbies😂
I think the number one line between hoarding and collecting is being able to know what you want to collect for certain reasons. If you collect something that is nostalgic to you and then finish it and find something else you used to like, thats collecting. If you constantly are finding "new" things to "collect".. when you have no reason, but you just find other "new" stuff to collect all the time, that is hoarding in my mind.
What do I collect......everything. I have pokemon cards, VHS, DVDs, Games, cassette tapes. well media in general so I guess I'm a media collector. Oh and magazines and figures lol
In my opinion, the difference between a hoarder vs collector, is that a collector usually has some sort of method to their madness (I.e Nostalgia, completions, thrill of the hunt), where as a hoarder usually doesn’t and collect anything and everything (rubbish like broken furniture, food scraps or even wrappers). I generally find that hoarders find it difficult to throw things away, where collectors can. Please keep in mind that it’s a fine line between the two and sometimes things go beyond that to mental illnesses as well Just my opinion
It's ironic that Joe Rogan said video games are useless given that he's an MMA commentator. What use does MMA have? It's a sport. Sports are games. What's the difference?
I don't disagree completely, but practicing MMA, even if it's not competitively, builds stamina, strength, confidence, and practical defense skills(and don't give that crap about how running away is always better because that might not even be an option, especially if you aren't in good running condition from playing too many video games). Watching MMA when you don't practice it is just as vapid as watching any other sport.

I enjoy knowing that if I want to play a fame I have it. The fact if a game is all on the disc or cart and has no download required matters to me. Sometimes it will decide what games I buy. I did all digital for the vita and I will never do that again.

I'm a very minimalist person. I could pack up and live in the forest tomorrow. However, I do like my material items that I do have. A big reason for me is that I was a poor abused kid. I turned to drugs at 12 years old....now that I'm in recovery and actually living I want those things back that I sold. I want things that my parents stole for drugs etc....so every day I see my collection is another day that I know I'm clean. :) Retro rick a collector, tendo a hoarder. That's the difference 😂

I think collecting for me started out because of the nostalgia, but later on, moved over to an interest in video game history and the games and consoles I never got to play. And it's like you said Rick, it takes me back to a time of comfort.
There's so many reasons for this. Nostalgic is one of them. We like to have them around as a display because they're part of our childhood. We don't need to play them just having them around just remembering parts of our life. Same as video games most of them we don't play but having them physical in your gameroom is just better than digital because you own them and no internet need it. Pretty much what they called a hobby so if your family or partner support you what you love then that's awesome.

For me, it’s the thrill of the hunt. I love finding a game or figure that I’ve been searching for to add to the collection. But also, I just enjoy being in my game room and thumbing through my games.

Nostalgia is definitely one of the biggest reasons I collect. I collect Video Games, Toy Figurines and action figures, Model and RC cars.
I have 3 kids and to be able to bring out a game or a toy I played with when I was a kid and play with them that's one of the greatest feelings ever.
I would love to have a full collection of Pontiac Firebird Trans Ams, not toy models the real things, one of every generation and model variant, but that would get expensive and I don't have the garage space for it. I do however own two Trans Ams now one is the "wife's" but its really mine also.
I think the difference between a hoarder and collector is the organization. When you have to trudge through your collection to live, then you have a problem. That and not being to let go of stuff in order to make room for newer stuff.

This is the answer, lol.
A collector will have things put away and curated. They are also almost always proud to show off and talk about their collections to others. They also can come to the realization that they may have to part with something that no longer has value to them as it once did to either get some money back or make way for something else that now has value.
A hoarder gains a compulsion for collecting any and all things for the sake of having it. Once they lose themselves to their mania for collecting, their home simply becomes a storage facility for their "hoard," and basic life tasks (such as walking around in their home) becomes difficult as their home becomes more and more disorganized, if not dangerous. They also have an extreme difficulty for giving up and parting ways with things that have little or zero value to them. These types usually end up reaching a crisis point and selling off their collections usually down the line, at least in video games.
A lot of hoarders have very specific organization to how they store their junk. Like, you can ask them for a specific thing and they will go through a half mile of single-person lanes between towering towers of junk and hand you that specific thing.
I like collecting video games as well, but I also like to collect robot model kits like Gundam's and certain toys.
Definitely nostalgia! My memories of my past are hazy at best but my memories of playing video games back in the day stick out. It was a simpler time and I miss it, especially the 90s.

Most collectors will at least have a dedicated area to tastefully showcase their collections. Hoarders on the other hand accumulate items and keep them anywhere and everywhere, which could never be visually pleasing lol... I just have a few tiny collections consisting of PS4 video game steelbooks, video game art books and comic book paperback trades 🤙🏽

90s cartoons and comics are what im all about. Use to like records and old antquics ingeneral but since i had a kid i narrowed what i collect down to a lot of what retro rick here likes for the most part, im not into video games. Thats my wifes thing ha.
I collect things that I like plain and simple be it vinyl, games, movies, or skateboards. I believe that the point of collecting vinyl, video games, and movies is to maintain and protect these pieces of art in my eyes.

When you walk into my house you’re transported to the 50s/60s. The majority of furniture, paintings, decorations is vintage Mid Century Modern. I just love the aesthetics and built quality so I’m always on the look out for it. Then there’s my game/toy room and it’s my childhood from the 80s and 90s.
CD's - Vinyl - & Cassettes!! I love music especially the physical formats! I like to hold them, look at them, display them, hunt them out of prints down, listen to and experience them, and just know I own them for the rest of my days! I also love video games but I dont collect them anymore because my music hobby is too epensive alone. Great content guys!
I collect video games and OG Thundercats figures.I collect games to catch up on what I missed growing up as my family wasn't bought video games.I went from Atari to N64 when I purchased said 64 myself.Nostalgia and thrill of the hunt are indeed reasons.Catalogging is definitely fun especially watching the changing of values

I feel wierd sometimes but when I sit down and chill in my man cave with all my legend of Zelda statue and games I smile makes me feel super good. To me a hoarder is someone that can’t let go of anything that they collect and collect a bunch of items that they don’t even care about and has no value in your life.

At 2k games I am sitting near the crazy collector status. I like to have my collection for playing. I want anyone to walk in and be able to find that memory they want to relive. My gameroom is my chill out room and I love it. I collect because I love looking at the past and seeing what I remember and what I missed. It is a great hobby and I enjoy the hunt. There is nothing that can stop me.

Rick, thank you! I found your channel in August and immidiately started my game collection. My first go at a thrift store I found a NEAR mint copy of Mario 64 and Yoshi’s Island for $1 and a silver slim PS2 for $5. I then set aside about $300 instead of $10, which completely strained our budget and left us in fear for bills... But your guidance is proven true!!! I did the same thing you did but I hit those bigger bundles on Craigslist and Facebook. Our first 5 eBay sales made $550!! And there are $1000s of value left in consoles, games, and peripherals that are just for sale now! And now that $300 is just freakin’ snowballing to more value with each new purchase I make. I am using a 3:7 ratio to determine return on each item, IE: If I buy at $3, it must have value of AT LEAST $10, but obviously buy for less if you can. Big bundles blows this ratio out of the water!!! Aside from making money, I am keeping things I want. I now have PS1-4, Xbox original to One, EVERY Nintendo from NES to Switch, an awesome Intellivision collection, Sega Genesis and tons of CIB games for all of it! I don't even have room for all of this stuff! Today I found a SEALED Mario Kart Wii for $2 at Goodwill. Rick, seriously, thank you!
I consider my self a hot wheels, vinyl records, and music memorabilia collector. I started back in 2010.
Now I have realized that some of the things I collect are collecting dust. Why? Because I have to many. So as of last year I’ve toned it down. Covid helped haha but I still purchase the items I really will enjoy on a daily/weekly basis.
You could say we were poor back then as we were kids and new toys or games were super rare (birthday and christmas, everything else was totally out of question) On top of that my mom forbid everything that was to fighting-related in her eyes. As a young adult i saw some of the stuff i really really wanted as a kid but never got. I realised nobody could stop me and now i could afford it. Thats how it started. So for me its a mix of nostalgia and trying to catch up on my childhood. Now that sounds sad, but it wasnt that bad ;-)

I collect Star Wars Black Series Figures. I have 278 currently, and I started in October 2023, and my spreadsheet says I have spent $10,489 on them (Freight not included).
I am running out of shelf room, so I will stop at 300 which will pretty much mean no more room, so I will have to stop! ha ha ha! cheers for the video guys!

I collect tabeltop game tarot cards, high end headphones, headphone amps and t-shirts. Now I am working on my personal tattoo collection. The reason is I have an addictive personality. I get really into something and I want to know all about it. Watching channels like this make me live vicariously through the hunt without having to buy and spend things like this. For most of my adult life I was used to living out of a suitcase, so I didn't have the luxury of collecting things.
The differences between a collector and a hoarder are:
1. Collectors curate a collection and have ideas about what makes it complete. Hoarders collect with little or no discretion.
2. Collectors get rid of duplicate stock. Hoarder's don't.
3. Collectors are happy to talk about their collection. Hoarders generelly are more secretive for fear of coming across as being mentally ill.
4. Collectors will loan out items from their collection to the right people. Hoarders generally won't ever loan out for fear of losing it.
5. Collectors will set items in special places and spend time with presentation and storage. Hoarders often can be distracted and will store things but not for display.
6. When your collection negatively impact your life or mental well-being in a significant way, it's no longer collecting, it's hoarding.
I think it comes down order and structure when collecting, and not being in a confused state when hoarding.
I think as a Toy channel, I look at it like it’s part of my income nowadays. But before it was definitely about the nostalgia & just posing figures around Is so fun to me.

Retro Rick I came across your channel by RUclips recommendation and I must say I relate to what you said 5:10-5:50 I have a few things from 90s and like you said you take me back to great simple times I been collecting 90s hot wheels and some of my favorite vhs movies from 80s & 90s and just thing’s I like from the past I love nostalgia things.

I miss my childhood. I collect video games first and foremost but I have been expanding towards other aspects of my childhood. Pokemon, digimon. collecting is one of the last things I have that keeps me sane.

I collect Toys and Games. Honestly because I had very little pocket money growing up. So adding a new toy or game was an event, and I never saw games as a disposable media. I kept them all, with the thoughts of revisiting these digital places again in the future. But I think now having them around is what fuels me creatively having all these references, stories and designs to draw from. Its of course fun to go out and find something new, and feel a sense of permanence as you add it to your shelves with retro games from your childhood. But yes that permanance also veers into a hoarder mentality of wanting everything and pileing it up without any reason to it. So I just try to focus on robots, and mecha games so I don't go too crazy. Lots of Transformers. But more obscurely, Zbots.
There's a lot of things I have collections of. Video games are #1 with me...(duh), but I am not really collecting a lot of games to keep them forever. If it isn't one of my favorite games, I just trade it to get more games. but only after I play it through. I have a good amount of Sports Cards, vintage Comic Books, and NASCAR Diecasts. I was getting a lot of Blu-rays, but I have been thinning out that collection a little bit. Only keeping what I like the most. I will grab anything Wreck It Ralph as well, I LOVE THOSE MOVIES!!!

I have to keep myself focused on video games. Inevitably, I end up extending myself and buying books or DVDs or action figures, but I'm not serious enough about it so they end up sitting and I have to get rid of them. Gotta manage my space. Now the only toys I pick up are like Mario Happy Meal toys or things like that because it goes with the video games.
I've always said "I collect collections". I actually don't collect video games (though I do still have my Atari 2600 and a bunch of cartridges). I do have a large collection of 800+ board games. I also collect PEZ, Star Wars, Power Rangers, Pixar Cars, Batmobiles, Muppets, Vintage Sci Fi toys, etc.
I agree we collect for nostalgia, it is our connection to our past and it is a solid memory we can go back to in the present and it is enjoyable.
That's why I keep all my games. Its no where near a great collection like you and tendos but it is still part of my past and I love going back and playing them. It's like re-living your past.
For a collection other then games I love Harry Potter and I do have a lot of collectable items for that.
Collectors can see the floor for a start and know where it begins and ends. A hoarder will have a vast collection that becomes overwhelming that will effect them and their daily life, where it is unhealthy.
I collect what I love I have games I grew up playing back in the day there's games and consoles that I've discovered and missed out on I'm a huge Mario fan I collect anything and everything Mario related trying to get every single game I have a majority of them so far

I collect things I love it's when I have a complete legend of zelda collection, systems, controllers, games if its zelda I have it lol I've gotten into limited run and super rare games collecting for switch recently. I have thimbleweed park, west of loathing, golf story, turok 1 and 2 dual pack, celeste, layers of fear, nighttrap, outlast 1 and 2 dual pack, and have doom 64, all the shantae games, ion fury and darkwood coming
edit - one thing though every limited run release I gotta get all the cards for the games I buy and of course I need the gold card lol

Well Rick I think your really the one to blame for getting me back into collecting video games 😂. The $10 game collection has me trying to do the same thing, and it has worked out amazingly! Really its incredible the stuff you can find at thrift stores and such. Im very cheap when it comes to collecting, so doing it for free (or nearly so) has been a great alternative. Im Running out of space though because it's working a little too well! I have added 9 systems so far and who knows how many games. Keep it up man!

The simple answer to why people collect is it's fun ...whereas other things in life are boring..paying taxes, paying rent, renewing your license, changing your oil ect..ect..I know because I'm a serious collector of toys, comics and trading cards (sport and non sport). Without collecting I don't think life would be too much fun honestly.
Basically I collect my past. Any games, movies, or toys that I have positive memories with. It's the appeal of owning something tangible and part of another time you can almost live in again. Nostalgia strikes that bittersweet chord for me. I try to keep it in check though, and not hoard lol
There are worse problems than collecting cool nostalgic toys and video games. For me, collecting video games serves as a distraction from getting jealous of people with nice cars. I used to be a car guy but that is an expensive hobby, people spending thoudands of dollars on cars that they keep in a garage but In video game collecting... a thousand dollars goes a really long way. I'm proud to drive my 03 Honda because after work im coming home to my family and a sweet game room.
I sold all my collection toys, games etc. I collect 💰 now. My goal in life is to just travel.

I think that hoarding is also on the "eye of the beholder". Some of my friends and and relatives think I'm a hoarder bc I collect videogames and movies. They don't care that I have everything organized and nicely displayed. Whereas some think that it's the coolest thing they've ever seen and say that my collection and gameroom looks like a museum. Go figure 😅

I collect Manga, key chains from around the world, and video games that I like. I have a backlog of course but I start to return to PS3 games that I own like every Prince of Persia that released on the PS3 in order to complete them 100% before the remake of the Sands of Time. I don't collect video games for systems that I don't own, and I really don't want to start collecting for NES, SNES, N64, and Gamecube cause it will never end. I do have a nice collection for my PS4 and Nintendo Switch, which I focus on right now.
I collect videogames, mainly from different nintendo eras cause I like the majority of nintendo characters (I grew up playing nintendo consoles). Also Nintendo games and productos usually hold and gain value along time.
There really is no one cooler or more level headed about all of this collecting/reselling vintage gaming stuff than Rick. He seems like the most genuinely nice and friendly dude ever. Really enjoyed this conversation format.

I collect things that remind me of my childhood. Growing up, I had a big GI Joe collection. When I was 12, my parents decided that I didn't need them anymore. I collect GI Joe toys mainly. My video game collection is also a result in a way of my parents trying to make me grow up before I was ready to.
I often tell my wife that the video games and toys I buy are far less harmful than other things I could be buying.
If you run out of room for your collection, and things start piling up on the floor, and there is no room to move or walk without causing possible injury, and it keeps getting worse, then you have a hoarding problem.
I love videos like these on seeing other people’s reasons on why they love collecting. I love VHS collecting that’s what I’m collecting more of as of right now. But anything 80s and 90s VHS, toys, and games I collect I just love the nostalgia and emotion feeling I get from my childhood finding these things. I collect mostly videogames , but i have other collection ( Pokemon Cards , Action Figures , Comics , Vinyl Records ) i'm almost 53 years old , and collect because these things relive my immagination , when i play , i return as a child , when dayreaming to be the hero of my games. I don't have a game room because my house is small , but i don't bother. I not like labeling people for their behavior , i and others collect because we want to. Is not the object iitself , is the motivation behind. Collect and don't mind to seems strange or weird for other people , this is my mantra in the past and the future. 😁😁😁

This video messed me up. I was confused for a minute, "wait, tendo didn't leave the state again yet." Lol then a realized the face hair was missing again. I think hoarding is when you stop organizing and admiring your things, that's when it stops being a collection and starts being a hoard.

Boredom. I love games but the problem for me is that I only love about 1 out of every 1000 games released. For me collecting is a side quest to keep me in the hobby. It is sentimental and nostalgic but most of all I just like to own stuff, to hold it in my hand and know that I spent my money on something that has a bit of value compared to say buying jewelry that goes from 2000 dollars to 500.

I wanna know why my goodwill don’t look like the ones you guys go to the one I visited didn’t have no games at all the four shelves with random items I swear it looked close to the scene probably worse then the napoleon dynamite thrift store scene with random outdated crap it it always has the same smell I remember going there as a kid with my mom I always remember I didn’t like going there it smelled and made my eyes itch when I went in a week ago as soon as I enter the same smell hit me in my face I remembered it right away
I think the difference between hoarding and collecting tending to the stuff, if that makes sense? A collection is well taken care of (for the most part, sometimes things get away from us), it’s in some kind of order or condition. When I think of a hoarder I think of a messy pile of stuff. life can be hard, I completely agree with collecting being a release from the daily stressors. That really goes for any hobby, it’s meant to bring you joy and be somewhat therapeutic. I enjoy a variety of things and always try new things sometimes I make up new hobbies😂
I think the number one line between hoarding and collecting is being able to know what you want to collect for certain reasons. If you collect something that is nostalgic to you and then finish it and find something else you used to like, thats collecting. If you constantly are finding "new" things to "collect".. when you have no reason, but you just find other "new" stuff to collect all the time, that is hoarding in my mind.

In my opinion, the difference between a hoarder vs collector, is that a collector usually has some sort of method to their madness (I.e Nostalgia, completions, thrill of the hunt), where as a hoarder usually doesn’t and collect anything and everything (rubbish like broken furniture, food scraps or even wrappers). I generally find that hoarders find it difficult to throw things away, where collectors can.
Please keep in mind that it’s a fine line between the two and sometimes things go beyond that to mental illnesses as well

I don't disagree completely, but practicing MMA, even if it's not competitively, builds stamina, strength, confidence, and practical defense skills(and don't give that crap about how running away is always better because that might not even be an option, especially if you aren't in good running condition from playing too many video games). Watching MMA when you don't practice it is just as vapid as watching any other sport.

I'm a very minimalist person. I could pack up and live in the forest tomorrow.
However, I do like my material items that I do have. A big reason for me is that I was a poor abused kid. I turned to drugs at 12 years old....now that I'm in recovery and actually living I want those things back that I sold. I want things that my parents stole for drugs etc....so every day I see my collection is another day that I know I'm clean. :)

you are a hero for your recovery...seriously amazing! Im the same way...i didnt have much as a kid...its kind of fun to buy the things i wanted when i was younger now
