Weakness is one hell of an issue in the entertainment industry.
They care about ESG score. You know ? Industries need Rockefeller and Co. funding.
It's not the devs who are scared, it's the investors. Why risk your money when you could bet in the safe thing that has worked before? (Even if its imitating it and the fact that videogames now are tremendously more expensive and errors cannot be tolerated nor risked) Think in the mind of an old 50 y/o funding that companies, would you really risk it?
The worse part is that they never learn the correct lessons when the project fails after they watered-down after making it for everyone.

This is just what Funcom does. The make game based on established universes and don't stay true to the game at all.
They aren't telling a story. They're making a game about breaking rocks and building castles in a literal giant sandbox.

The developers of this game made Conan Exiles and the gameplay is basically as you just said. Also just to clarify, majority of the staff are from China so be prepared for tons of microtransactions. Conan Exiles was a one time buy until the former developers sold themselves to Funcom and they added a Battle Pass.

Dune Messiah and Children of Dune are a few of my favorites books.
And this game is not set in that time, why does that have anything to do with it? There's a huge religion concept in the Dune. Many earlier books and later books go over the idea, Leto quite literally is a god in the book. The whole series is basically how being the one eyed man in a world of blind men makes you god.
if it was a single player action rpg you might have a point. but it's an mmo. the player just isn't all that special.
The books are also about all the harms involved in that. There are vanishingly few proper anti-heroes in videogames, and I think that's for good reason: How do you tell the message in an MMO that acquiring power is a bad thing? Even games that have an "evil" path like KOTOR or Mass Effect ultimately reward you for getting more powerful.
So I do think there are legitimate reasons to want to tell a different kind of story that aren't just fear of backlash. I will withhold judgment (because it could absolutely just be a cheap way to avoid religious controversy as well).
Dune is set 30K years after humans left earth, taking from Isac Asimov's "Foundations" books. The Fremin are Suni Muslims per the book, and are at war with the British ( Emperor ) and Jewish tribes (Harkonen ) It was an allegory of all events from the death of Czar Nicolas to the 1965 ME issues.

This is probably investor driven. Some big investor either plants the seeds that DEI will grant more money or "recommends" Sweet Baby Inc to the right person in c suite or management and that's all it takes.
Don’t buy games until they come out and you can see the gameplay. Make them work for your money.
And people miss the point that Dune was about how a charismatic leader can be bad and how you should be making your own decisions.
This was not really the point of Dune imo. By the time Paul Atreides realized what the jihad was and his role in it, he was too late to stop it, even if he killed himself which he literally contemplates doing at one point. His future sight gave him the ability to see the future, but not really the ability to change it despite a lot of the fluff about it throughout the first two books. Much of the point of the books was, after the Harkonen conflict, doing his best to damage mitigate. The Arrakins were going to have their jihad with or without him, and he hoped his future sight would help him save lives, and in the end it really didn't accomplish anything. Things would've happened the way they happened even if Paul couldn't see the future at all.

Why does everyone have to include the flavor of the month game in everything?
This is what I understand: Paul Atreides was a messiah because he was in the middle of a conspiration that was being plotted for thousands of years, that's why he was able to do all what he did. But the main character is not Paul Atreides, just a random guy trying to survive in Arrakis when it was still in control of the Harkkonen. So, the game probably will show elements from the religion the Fremen followed but, since your character is not that important lorewise, you wont be able to use religion as a way to manipulate other characters, gain followers, etc, and the game will focus more on the economical and social guerrilla war between Fremen and Harkkonen.
Hopefully it's like that, the MMO would die if it wasn't like that.

@@hmpang4996 Well, unfortunately that started after Tencent bought Funcom. A short time later there was an in-game shop and season pass; after that I left the game. The purchasable DLC packs (e.g. various building elements) on Steam were okay in terms of price, but the new objects in the in-game shop... Blizzard level.

I think what they mean to say is that our characters will be basically random people without much significance to the world. A concept some people like and others dislike.
They hyped up all this stuff about what our characters can do in their most recent video, all the influence we'll have, but somehow, we're not allowed to touch what is literally the most important cornerstone of society in the entire series. Seems really suspicious to draw the line there in a Dune game of all things...
@@Zyart Tbh, Nothing they have shown so far hyped me up and the idea of a Dune MMO feels wrong to me. They made rts games which were perfectly suited for the universe, hell an fps would work well as well. Rpg is a maybe. But an mmo as a concept creates a whole bunch of problems. Then again there is Lotro which thrives to this day as a good example.

Long story short, lasers and shields interacting causes nuclear explosions, and most combat in Dune is done via mêlée.
I do think a first person sword game à la mount and blade might work though.

Morrowind, one of the most famous and beloved video games ever made, was practically an unofficial Dune adaptation. It was steeped in religion.
I don't think this game is meant to be about any particular plot within the universe. Maybe you get to choose a starting faction or whatever, but you're just some random person that exists on Arrakis trying to survive. It's not trying to be some highbrow space opera where you lead a faction waging a holy war.

Religious conflict could actually be a fresh idea for a game if done well.
Pillars of Eternity 1+2 dealt with it well and it made for an interesting gameworld/story.
They don't even have to do anything new. They've got a license for DECADES of source material.

The quote in the article is: "we sort of sidestep religion." And given how snowflakey everyone is, I very much expect that the Dune MMO won't be the story where you're a guy, and in the background the Arab-like Fremen are fighting a Jihad. Even though that's arguably the #1 major event in the book.

Just another project that will fail where the writers think they can write a better story than the one that made the IP famous in the first place. Eventually these companies will get the picture but that will probably be when all the IPs people love are dead.
To be fair, the Dune RTS games didn't entirely follow the lore, and they were great games. It's really how stories are adapted to game format. But recently it seems a lot of adaptations are changed for the sake of change rather than to fit the format they're on.

Paul running from his destiny and trying to avoid the holy jihad across the galaxy was a big part of why the story was good. The Bene Gesserit (give me a break on spelling, it's been a few years) literally spent generations sowing the seeds of the prophecy of a savior to the Fremen. "He will know your ways as if borne to them." Going against that premise creates an entirely different story arc. One might say it deviates from the golden path.
Can't really have a story where you're the "Messiah" when it's an MMO.

You could say it's pretty much the whole point of Paul's journey, to avoid said jihad to the extent his visions have foreseen
There's actually two major 'jihads' throughout the history of Dune.
The Butlerian Jihad (1st novel in the prequel series); which explores the background behind why computers and AI are banned from use in the galaxy. The very reason why spice, navigators, and therefore Arrakis are even relevant in the galactic economy
Then there's Atreides jihad/The Golden Path that the main series is about.
So yes, Jihads are literally the driving force of both narratives; the prequel and main canons.
Dune without jihad is like Star Wars without the Wars, Star Trek with no Trek.

IIRC there are like three or four of those in the series, the butlerian one from the prequels, paul's in books 1 and 2, the one led by leto II in book 4 and the one by the honored matres in books 5 and 6. That's like the central core events through the whole series.
jihad has the meaning of consistent struggle. When it comes to war it’s a consistent struggle fighting. You can also use it like struggling whether you want to change something that you do.
This is a MMO, not a solo player game, so why would they have everyone running around as the messiah of the game?
Hasn't stopped a game like FF14 from having a story where your character is THE Warrior of Light, the big saviour of the world. You can keep the story element separate from the mmo multiplayer element.
And if ppl like that, good for them. But for me, WoW lost all its appeal when you stopped being a random adventurer and became the main character instead. It just feels non compatible with the 'MM' part of 'MMO'.

I also think they might try to avoid the “champion” trope wow has fallen into. Hopefully the tell the story and the players are adventurers who can help one or both sides. We will see I suppose.
You could have stopped at 'They're afraid.'
There's a pretty decent time jump between "Dune" and "Dune: Messiah". During that time, Arrakis became Paul's seat of power and the holy wars took place on other worlds once his seat was established. It was during this time where Arrakis became extremely prosperous as well. If this MMO takes place on Arrakis years after it was pacified, someone on that planet may not have much interaction with the holy war.
I don't have a whole lot of confidence in this game but there's a path there to make a good Dune MMO without stepping too much into the Jihad aspect of Dune.

If they're setting it in the interim time between Jihads then I don't see the problem. I mean, there's a massive amount of time between the big ones and there's a hell of alot of conflict between the houses of the Landsraad. There's a bunch of them, and having the house you picked make a difference in your character would be cool as hell.
It seems like the scope is going to be small, though. Imagine a game where you could be Fremen zealot, water stealer, spice smuggler, Bene Gesserit reverend mother, Bene Tleilax face dancer, Saurdakar, any Landsraad... or if they had some non-Arrakis zones, spacing guild or CHOAM affiliated characters. That'd be cool.
As a Dune enjoyer, I’m going to read the novels instead. I heard that’s there’s a lot of plot twists that are more intense than Disney Star Wars.

I don't usually read books, too lazy to finish them normally, but when I was reading the Dune series I got hooked and constantly wanted to know what happens next, ended up reading through it super fast, more than 400 pages per day.
not really interested in this MMO, it really seems like it has little to do with actual Dune and it's just a desert sci-fi conan exiles clone.

Still skeptical of this game knowing that the people behind it made Conan Exiles, because that was a super success... Don't be surprised if it's just a reskin. Calling it now your character is banished/ "exiled" to Arrakis, thats what they probably mean by how you the player arrives.
It could just be me, but if this is an MMORPG and not just a single-player RPG, its makes a lot of sense for not every player to be the "messiah" that would be like having a Star Wars MMORPG where you're equivalent to Luke, or LOTR and you're equivalent to Frodo. It makes sense that with the expected amount of players, that not every player can and should walk the same path to all end at the same goal. I think its just being thought about too much, but again, that might just be me.
The game shouldn't be an MMO in the first place.

Tell that to funcom. Everyone can blatantly see its an asset flip for Conan exiles. They are, however, marketing it like it's going to be like a more traditional MMO
Then at least keep the flavor text about the Jihad on the background because that's what you really have to survive in the setting if you want to slap the IP to your game Title, otherwise just call It "Great Worm Desert Online"

The way I took/understood it was kinda like how in wow or ff14 we are all the heros including like the horde when in reality there can only be one hero. So they didn’t want everyone playing to be a messiah type character because it might be broken or that type of character is overplayed in video games.
All they have to do is set it 100 years before the first book. You start as a scavenger on Dune making money. Your Guild/Clan will be called a Minor House. You get to side with a Major House if you like.

Bro , the religion of the Fremen of Dune is directly inspired by Sunni Islam and mujahedeen fighter culture , nothing to do with Christianity here really. The religious imagery of Dune is explicitly islam inspired, and most of the religious terms in the book are in Arabic or a re-imagination of what the language would be in that distant future.
The fear from the devs here is to have the game associated with Jihad (frequent term and subject in the book) + current narratives and events of oppressed arabs (let's say palestinians) VS genocidal colonizers (let's say Israel, the US) . Imperialism, extractive colonialism (spice = oil), instrumentalized religious fanaticism , armed conflicts and their consequences in the middle east and beyond, are explicit messages of Frank Herbert.
Put aside the anti-sjw, western centric, post gamergate pearl clutching for just one sec, and read the actual source material written in 1965, as well as geopolitical events since 9/11 up to today , to understand the dynamics that make Dune a complex piece of narrative to adapt and put out there . Same reasons Denis Villeneuve replaced the term Jihad with Holy War in the movie, to water it down and make it more palatable to post 9/11 western audiences .
Anyhoo just pick a book or two and stop getting your understanding of things solely from video games youtubers is my advice.

Adding to my comment : the concept of religious conflicts and jihad were taken out not only to cater to western sensitivies, but also to the sensitivies of Chinese stakeholders and public (Tentent owns Funcom), as the Chinese government is engaged in ethnic cleansing or "re-education" of it's muslim Uyghurs population with the threat of jihad terror as main pretext .

It's a multiplayer survival game, narrative isn't the main focus. You're never gonna hear anyone talking about the story of conan exiles
I actually understand why they are doing this. For those who arent aware, in Dune many of the regions arent simply derivative of modern day ones, they ARE the modern day ones. Catholisism, whilst very different is a major religion as are others. the original novel presents them as evolutions of current religions.
Given this portraing any one of them better than others or evil or whatever is a little risky. Also to be fair, only paul attredes is a messiah, it wouldnt make sense for eveyone in an MMO to be a messiah would it?

All depends when events of the game happen - Funcom's previous big IP was Conan and their big game was Conan Exile ( saved funcom from going under and even allowed to expand) it's a survival multiplayer game in which you are some random person in the Conan universe and need to survive ( 2 maps with different reasons for player being stranded). Dune Awakening - is intended as a Survival MMO focused on PVP, so playing as Mashaya doesn't really make sense for MMO - best guess it's action will happen before House Harkonnen takes control over Dune because vehicle design looks as in movies. So it will likely be a prequel to Dune movies / books and conflict likely will be the reason for the Emperor to appoint House Harkonnen to Dune to stabilise Spice products which will fit nice with books / lore - and fit nice with Survival MMO game
Odd considering the studio making the game also made Conan Exiles. A game where you can not only butcher people to gain favor from your god, but can also capture and train slaves and practice ritual sacrifice and cannibalism.
As a book fan, if it's not Paul or Leto then I don't want them. Being Fremen would be pretty cool cause the Fremen are interesting, and living on Arrakis is interesting. It doesn't make sense for some Random to come in and be the Mahdi, Paul and Leto's story is essentially Single Player... Unless you think of Leto as being multiple people.

If dune: awakening is an MMO, meaning it's a live service game where all players are in a shared universe (which may be split into different realms/worlds), then I don't think it's a mistake for them to say the player is not the messiah. If every player is the messiah, no player is the messiah. If you want a messiah story it needs to be singleplayer or light co-op

My problem with it is that the sky is light blue, like at least they didn't make it deep blue, but I thought it was supposed to be close to purple or black even during the day. I thought the idea of a bright day with a black sky would be so cool

Since its not a campaign story game it makes sense but im kind of surprised theres not a religion option like conan exiles in it, or a faction progression type system where you could unlock blueprints for weapons or armor looks. Though i guess with the blueprint trading system the later could be problematic permissions wise.

In the original books Paul, while not a hero or a villain and merely someone that had to play the role he was stuck with was troubled by the outcome of his actions, as such, after winning against the empire, lead to the death of entire worlds, demoralization and extremes at the hands of his faithful whom he couldnt really stop or control. Religion IS Dune for better or worse. Them doing this is really bad cause the premise of Dune is only learned through the holy wars that happen before Paul, during Paul and long after Paul.
This is why they are calling the game Dune: awokening. They be pushing awokeness.😂😂😂

Idk much about the game or the IP, but from the little I saw this is supposed to be a survival MMO set in this world, so it makes sense that you're not "The Messiah", that's supposed to be the MC in the movies. My guess is that they're just more focused on game mechanics and in making you feel like you're living in that world, and less about you changing it. Probably their biggest concern when it comes to big events in that world's story is: "don't fuck with it".

I get not having a story revolving around a Messiah character. That was Paul's story. By definition, guy's like him don't come around very often. However It would be a bit odd to not have Fremen religion, the Bene Gesserit implanted prophecies etc. play a role in the overall story. It's a massive part of this universe.

This is a conan exiles type game. Conan exiles has you exploring an unconnected land, in which you interact with all the different religions. And even bump into Conan himself.
But you dont become mega-king.

Dune doesn't glorify holy wars and such. It's repeatedly seen as a bad but unavoidable part of theocracy. I mean i remember a part when Paul is thinking to himself that people living through the world wars thought it couldn't be more brutal and him thinking the same knowing that more devastating wars were yet to come.
