@Nykaitcha the demo id a bit buggy in my experience at least but it was def in the demo because I switched it by mistake mid battle and was confused lol
@Nykaitcha just like the auto lock on system gripe. It just seems to be based on her approach & delivery that although familiar w/ tales of through the berseria mention, this is clearly her first tales of game, given all the comparisons to scarlet nexus when there's an entire franchise to compare & contrast how far the series has come. Goin back to my gripe, if you ignore the tutorials, there's a handy help menu, in this game it constantly reminds you of how to access it... oh & guess what, there's a change target mechanic. On controller (same as it's always been) Tap Lb to switch, or hold & move to change to the specified target of your choosing.
This is the first time in years where I’ve sat down with a game and haven’t been able to stop playing. I forgot what it felt like to be addicted to a game and want to stay up all night playing. That’s how good this game is.
I wish all review channels would give a comprehensive score of individual aspects like Fextralife does in the summary. Sometimes I just want to look at the Story and Gameplay aspects without caring about the rest, and this gives me a review for just that. Thank you!
It is true that they separate their score is a nice looking way but their scores are still meaningless because they are just like IGN they give most games the same typical scores of a 7-10 scale. Story good? instant 9 lol. I mean 7 is also good, but most games somehow are easily getting higher than 8 scores in story, i dont think that should be the case with a well made scale, same for gameplay, you can give Divinity OS2 score 9.5 because its gameplay is indeed one of the best if not the best in turn based ever, but then comes your average/decent game and it gets 8.5, like only 1 score below the best of the best? come on, visuals and replay seem to always get scores around 7-9 as well. Fextra need to work on using the whole scale and stop catering to casuals who think anything below 7 is bad and 7 is average and 8 is maybe good, 9 is good and 10 is amazing lol. That is a school grade scale and it doesnt really tell and differentiate well, its a scale that will lead to score inflation and a blurry, messy ranking. Otherwise the review are good, they talking bits i mean, they just need to adjust scores.
@@jackjager8790 Fextralife don't really give 'most games' 7-10 and those kinds of scores are mostly exclusive to AAA games on IGN. IGN have always happily scored Indie or small publisher games well south of 8.
We aren’t a huge company with unlimited writers, we are a small team of content creators and therefore we only review what we have time to play, and we only have time to play games that interest us. So you are unlikely to find a game with a four or a five because we don’t have time for that game, last of us was an exception because we had made the time for the game given the hype and we were disappointed
Same here. I am playing it now but still watching a "Should you play it" 😁 I pre-ordered the digital one on XSX. The game is up if switching to Asia Region.
Fextralife are one of the few reviewers I actually trust now (especially after the Last of Us 2 controversy). Never played a Tales game before, looking forward to trying this at some point!
The Tales franchise desperately needed this game as the series has been outright bad to just mediocre for an extremely long time (After Vesperia the franchise just seemed to meander).
I wish there would be a preview clip on all the available artes in the artes menu so it's easier to figure out which artes chain better with other artes..also wish we could toggle the target lock on/off instead of instant auto lock-on when combat initiates..still it's a great game though..it's on par with Final Fantasy 7 Remake for me....great review btw..
@@nocturne2172 Well sorry bud but so far this one is sitting at a 87 on Metacritic for the Ps5, and it's being considered as the best in the series by many people.
FYI, Tales of Arise doesn't have a slow start to begin with. The introduction in the battle system is actually addicting that you're craving for more which I think suffice the sluggish pacing of the story in your first to two hours but it isn't a slow start partly because of the side quest and exploration and due to how large the environment is in this game and how engaging the combat can be to the extent you'd forget to advance the story which I think is a positive factor for me to enjoy the game at your own pace.
One of my favorites. Tales of destiny got me hooked. Wish they remade ToD or made an anime on it. The concept of special element weapons and characters were completely charming. But back to subject ToA is top favorite game of all time now
Huh, dispite being the most critical review of the game i've seen so far (and with me disagreeing in some points, mostly 'cause of my personal opinion) you made a great job arguing it and making your point being well presented and substantiated, to say the least Great job! I'm subscribing :)
I am playing on moderate, sometimes hard I got to the second lord boss battle, boy was he hard, it was a struggle that lasted for about 15 minutes, with a lot of close calls, it consumed all my items and it required all the skill I had gotten over the 15 hours of playtime This game is amazing people, I'm loving the combat and this is just the beginning, the story is also interesting by what I have seen so far If you are a fan of jrpgs I'd say buy it from what I've seen so far
I started playing this game last night and I couldn't put it down. I have a BLAST playing this game, the characters are interesting and likable, the story is engaging, the visuals can be somewhat limited at times but other times they can look down right GORGOUSE. The controls take a little bit getting use to, but once you do and you get a rhythm down on what abilities seamlessly transition into one another you'll be taking down bad guys left and right. The game DOES have SOME microtransactions, but thankfully there not so "in your face" as others and are COMPLETELY optional. While I did purchase the one that gives your characters a 5 level boost, some Gald (the inworld currency) and a 20% reduction on the cost of using abilities you definitely dont have to. It did help with some of the quests and exploring earlier on, its definitely something you dont have to do. I will most definitely be finishing this game and I say to anyone whos a fan of games like Final Fantasy, Trials of Mana, Xenoblade Chronicles and while not turn based even for fans of Dragon Quest, this is a definite MUST BUY!!! I cant say enough GOOD things about this game, so far it is one of my new favorite JRPGs of the past couple years.
It's the best game of 2021, so far. Probably going to be Game of the Year, to be honest. Not much has came out to be comparable to Tales of Arise, save for No More Heroes 3, but that's not even going to be close to being selected, despite how good it is.
As much as I would love for it to be Goty it's not going to. It's going to be decided based on the popularity vote, so far Resident Evil Village and Ratchet and Clank are ahead of it no doubt, no way the industry will let this animeish game win unfortunately but I'm sure it will win and get nominations for RPG of the year etc.
So I've played the demo for about 10 minutes and it feels pretty good, just enemies are a little spongey. As someone who's never played a Tales game, is it going to like cut through my current backlog into a must play?
@@yoshatabi I know that. However with the combat being action action oriented, like does that get better to deal with? I know it doesn't have OTGs or anything. So am I just doing KOF trials on every mob
@@qdotexe As the game progresses and you get more abilities that feeling goes away. After a certain point (I'm holding off due to spoilers) you will easily handle regular enemies, and only bosses and some mini-bosses will be somewhat spongy.
I comment here to find out more: what difficulty do you recommend to get started? And, above all, can it be modified during construction? Thank you and nice review!
In Tales Of games sometimes the normal mode can be quite a challenge, especially if you're new to the series and still learning about the mechanic. If you just want to enjoy the story then I suggest you play on easy mode, or you can play on easy mode early on the game and after you leveled up your character and understand the mechanic and you feel more confident then you can switch to normal mode mid game or endgame, since you can switch the difficulty anytime as long as you are not in a combat.
@@matteoiommi7844 I played on hard until the ozze hive boss in the sewers, your ai teammates arent goood for this fight and he can 1 shot people alot so I had to reduce down to normal lol
@@matteoiommi7844 I would say moderate until you find the difficulty is spiking too hard for skill to win then reduce to normal and increase again after, the problem is some of the bosses are crazy hard and all normal enemies are too easy even on hard xD
The excessive battle cries are seriously grating. There needs to be an option to tone it down. Idk, the tales games have always been missing something for me. Arise is pretty, but I’m not feeling it.
Wish they discussed the microtransactions and its relation to the pace of progressing. Not sure if it's just me but I feel like the gald and exp acquisition rate is a little off and it seems we are being pushed to get the DLC packs with the exp and gald boosts, store discount rates, less CP costs in battles, etc. Feels reminiscent of AC.
not only are there artifacts which literally double your xp and sp gain rates, all the microtransactions are almost like Devil May Cry's; vestigial and totally unnecessary.
Eh, doesn't feel like that in-game. Not just that, you even find artifacts in-game that drastically increase your EXP/SP/Gald gain rate on top of the multipliers for doing well in fights, Fishing, etc... The thing I have the biggest issue with is the cosmetics granting special titles with ridiculous stat boosts in-game.
love the 8.0 for replayability... tales of series is one of the best for replayability at end with various new difficulty and challenge to find all the secrets...
Would have loved to see a section (or even mention) about this game in comparison to previous entries in the series. I know you can't please everyone, but, as a veteran of this series who's grown a little tired of it, most of the facets of the game featured here are pretty much the generic framework upon which nearly all "tales of" games are built. Is there anything in this game that freshens up this series?
the boss fight is what makes this game so good, especially those big size bosses with multiple weak points. hit the weak points with reigning slash until it breaks the bosses will down, go quickly charged alphen's flaming sword ground artes till his hp 1. slam the shit out the boss. then quickly command shionne to heal alphen back to full hp. rinse and repeat. 😂
The thing that prevents me from enjoying these games is the audiovisual assault on the senses. In particularly, the combat banter and constant shouting the skills they're using. It gets very overwhelming after a while.
I've heard complainta of microtransactions, do you actually need these(p2w)? Hopefully it'll be on sale during steam winter sale. I have so many games in my backlog i feel it is a disservice to this game to let it collect dust.
the story , especially the skit, all feel very cliche. the only thing back them up is visual and combat. it's interesting to see people praise it like no tomorrow, i bet they're scare tales game discontinue at this entry. which I don't really care because they change the formula too much, into bad direction. most of the iconic features is GONE.
Exactly what im worrying. Also it's tedious to see all praises from everyone, criticisms are better indicators nowadays as everybody's getting a 8 or 9.
@@juiteko8375 when you noticed overwhelming mainstream reviewer high score, and inside they mentioned some shortcoming but barely emphasize it, you'll know some fishy thing is happening. i bet they barely try the previous masterpiece so they think it's fine for some of the shortcoming. but for long time fans it's another story. cliche of the story and repetitive exploration and enemy variation. especially the dull skit system, delusional only find this appealing.
anyone that likes this game is inherently wrong huh? I'll have you know you're in the minority here and just to let you know I've played previous tales games and they are a sack of shit compared to this.
Mine was running full 60-144 fps depending on the circumstances, never dipped below that (I forgot if the battles were locked at 60, but they certainly didn't go below that).
Was worried it was gonna be super easy to the point where I ask why is this a game and not just an anime or movie but man I've had my shit kicked in a few times now
This is a pseudo zen action game for me. Skippable generic story with cliche art style but graphics are impressive. Gameplay is very watered down which has somewhat satisfying moments but it get repetitive. Upping difficulty just forces you to grind a bit more rather than battle smarter. Once the game clicks, you can power through without grinding even at the grind walls (I.e., you don’t need to grind). The DLC UX stuff is annoying. The Owl Forest and collecting Owls mechanic is great and should be kept in future. Side quests are boring. Some levels look beautiful while others are bland. There isn’t enough adventure game like secrets. Bad guys have very little variety. This is a solid 7/10 for me. It would be nice to remove the anime gimmicks and try to modernize its narrative/style a bit. It would also be nice if the combat had more fighting depth. I swear old Tales Of games had that but maybe I don’t remember too well?
i think the combat is very fluid. It CAN get a little boring with some characters like Rinwell since you can spam only a spell but I feel it is more on you as a player choosing to change your fight style than the game's fault
Any reason to actually change active characters? A lot of games that have that mechanic I never really found a reason to do it. In Ni No Kuni 2 I would do that SOMETIMES but very rarely. Mostly just played as the prince 99% of the time.
I would say that there are some fights that play better as different characters, but to switch rapidly in combat isn't too important. The ai does alright.
I love this game…but, can we get a new 2-D Tales with highly detailed and animated sprites? Tales of Destiny Remake is still the best game in the series.
The amount of reviews and discussion videos about this game where the reviewer mispronounces the names of the two races that play a VERY prominent role in the story is baffling. You learn these names in the opening MINUTES of the game, and they are repeated constantly throughout it; so how can I be expected to believe that these people even gave this game the time of day?
There ARE a few Tales games that had summons. Almost all of the games have Spirits. It's just a question of whether we'll be able to use them this time.
No offense you sound like you didn't like this game much or the Tales series. I would encourage you to try other series, there's so much to these games and combat.
My main gripe is them shouting every move. What sucks is that this can addressed with 1 audio setting, but they just don't bother putting it. Right now, the only way to get around this is to turn off voice volume completely, which turns off voice even in cutscenes and skit. This sin is enough to drive me to the pirate shores.
@Fextralife You're the best. You're the reason I decided to get more involved in the YT community. You have the most organized, well-spoken and detailed gaming content on YT, imo. Thanks for another great video.
some bosses were broken . just tedious and frustrating. even on story mode they just have 1 billion heath . i did 100 hits combos and it still took me like 15 minutes to kill the second one . my 2 cents.
stop repeating linear coz jrpg has been linear since the 80s ff1-15 has been linear unless its a mmorpg. its an offline game of course. the only downside in here is just the stats and damage is too low unless you wanna farm herbs that boost stats. also the animation is not the same as the previous tales this animation is a bit sloppy and rushed unlike beseria abyss vesperia are all top quality animation.
Really enjoy the combat in this game enjoying even more you can turn off those irritating battle voices as there fighting coz gosh it grates my ears with the constant 'yip yip yargh yip yip' ...so annoying, man this makes me enjoy it so much more

I couldn't tell anything from the Demo, but it's possible that stuff wasn't in there
Hype! Love y’all’s reviews
Looks better than I expected. Might check it out someday.
the boss fight is what makes this game so good, especially those big size bosses with multiple weak points. hit the weak points with reigning slash until it breaks the bosses will down, go quickly charged alphen's flaming sword ground artes till his hp 1. slam the shit out the boss. then quickly command shionne to heal alphen back to full hp. rinse and repeat. 😂
All Tales games are linear, it doesn't open up more until about 40 hours in when you get the airship
Pretty sure that's just called a JRPG lmao
@@SweetLuups That is Connor's first RPG!
it says the ascent in the time stamps in the video
When I'm finished bravely default 2 will def be starting this
did these guys play the entire game without learning that you can switch characters on the fly?
Elde Menancia was my favorite ❤
The thing that prevents me from enjoying these games is the audiovisual assault on the senses. In particularly, the combat banter and constant shouting the skills they're using. It gets very overwhelming after a while.
17th Hooooly crap didnt realize they did that many.
how can price point be 8.5. its only £50. what price did you need for it to get 10??
probably because all of the dlcs.
Great review, but absolutely no info on pc specific settings (controls and graphics).
Can you turn off combat voices for only combat in this one?
I've heard complainta of microtransactions, do you actually need these(p2w)?
Hopefully it'll be on sale during steam winter sale. I have so many games in my backlog i feel it is a disservice to this game to let it collect dust.
I appreciate the reviews on this game. But when I first saw the reveal trailer, it was a day one pre order for me. Plus I am a die hard Tales fan.
This is the best tales of game to date. It's also one of the best action rpgs out there alongside scarlet nexus and the ys series.
Anyone can recommend what is the best platform for playing it ps5, XSX, PC?
How does this compare to Ys Viii Lacrimosa of Dana
the story , especially the skit, all feel very cliche. the only thing back them up is visual and combat. it's interesting to see people praise it like no tomorrow, i bet they're scare tales game discontinue at this entry. which I don't really care because they change the formula too much, into bad direction. most of the iconic features is GONE.
@@caxshen Yep.
anyone that likes this game is inherently wrong huh? I'll have you know you're in the minority here and just to let you know I've played previous tales games and they are a sack of shit compared to this.
Thoughts on performance? Could be the video but it seems sluggish in combat. Is it 30 fps?
Watch ACG's review of the game for performance :) you wont regret it.
On basic PS4 which im playing it on its 30. Demo run fine. PS5 and Series X should be 60.
60 on next gen with 4k I believe, uncapped on pc so its smooth at 144fps. Shouldn't be any less smooth on next gen.
Last gen 30 I think
Mine was running full 60-144 fps depending on the circumstances, never dipped below that (I forgot if the battles were locked at 60, but they certainly didn't go below that).
Was worried it was gonna be super easy to the point where I ask why is this a game and not just an anime or movie but man I've had my shit kicked in a few times now
It’s tales , they’re never super difficult but have a couple spikes throughout the game
8.6...HYPE!!!
They gave Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous an 8.8.
Music is very weird or is it just me, it just plays in the background mindlessly
Seriously regretting getting this game on pc tho, as far as monitors and the settings go.
As the game itself however it's a blast to play
What’s wrong with the settings? I’ve been playing 60fps in 4K with max settings and the game plays and looks phenomenal.
I've been playing on 1440p at 144fps and it was a smooooth, wonderful experience.
I play on PC and run it fine on 4k and everything on Max
Why am are you fighting monsters not the slavers?
Hope it does well sales wise
Any reason to actually change active characters? A lot of games that have that mechanic I never really found a reason to do it. In Ni No Kuni 2 I would do that SOMETIMES but very rarely. Mostly just played as the prince 99% of the time.
Haha. I never played the prince. Always the president. I guess that's the reason for changing characters, to each their own.
I would say that there are some fights that play better as different characters, but to switch rapidly in combat isn't too important. The ai does alright.
So Shionne is basically Rogue
The game looks great, and I loved some of the previous entries (I'm looking at you, Tales of Vesperia!). I'll definitely pick it up at some point! :)
Loved the review thanks
I love this game…but, can we get a new 2-D Tales with highly detailed and animated sprites? Tales of Destiny Remake is still the best game in the series.
Waiting for complete guide before playing. Tales series side contents have reputation for being tedious, exhausting, but rewarding.
Can you play it with a friend? I think you could in berseria (according steam)
No it's 1P.
Is this for GOTY candidate? Kudos to the devs.
is there multiplayer? 1-4 players?
No.
@@kukasr sad would’ve been better if there was
Great review. 👍
Like Scarlet Nexus you say? I might pick this up after all.
Now it needs some cool summons and this is my new Final Fantasy 😁
Nah, Tales of games are focused purely on combat as well as story, in a sense the MC is more stronger than a summon from a FF game
There ARE a few Tales games that had summons. Almost all of the games have Spirits. It's just a question of whether we'll be able to use them this time.
Thats such an insult to FF
@@godofsin4604 Combat & Cutscenes.
Best Tales Game By far
Great video!
some bosses were broken . just tedious and frustrating. even on story mode they just have 1 billion heath . i did 100 hits combos and it still took me like 15 minutes to kill the second one . my 2 cents.
Worth every bit of my money.
The answer is yes!
stop repeating linear coz jrpg has been linear since the 80s ff1-15 has been linear unless its a mmorpg. its an offline game of course. the only downside in here is just the stats and damage is too low unless you wanna farm herbs that boost stats. also the animation is not the same as the previous tales this animation is a bit sloppy and rushed unlike beseria abyss vesperia are all top quality animation.
Waiting my copie 😊
Really enjoy the combat in this game enjoying even more you can turn off those irritating battle voices as there fighting coz gosh it grates my ears with the constant 'yip yip yargh yip yip' ...so annoying, man this makes me enjoy it so much more
Can you turn off voices in combat? I hope...
Griffith?
Very excited for this one.
Amazing review as always 👌🏾
This game is great. Worth it.
Is it censored?
Played the demo and hated it. I think the reviewers are going very lightly on anime type looking games
Yeah saddly thats been a thing for a long time. It looks nice but it is bit anime isnt it. 😯
All the "Tales of" games, a series that started 25 years ago, where with anime characters...
Yeah, it's almost like people have different opinions and taste in games. Weird!
@@Gahnt999 It's always been a poor man's Square rpg.
