As a series veteran, and someone who's been researching everything about the mechanics in this game, I am beyond impressed with this video. I even learned something myself. Switching between characters mid boost attack to continue the combo with said character? UGH that's SO SEXY. Awesome video man.
Thanks a ton! Also, being able to switch party members between active and reserve while in combat is HUGE! I can't wait to see combo videos where people make a combo involving all six party members!
@@BacklogBattle I know there's someone out there who's already figured something bonkers out. I'm being patient as my rare acquired PS5 is coming soon and I wanna test things out myself first. Super excited. I'm subbing to follow your work. Keep it up man!
@@cappachino20 omega evolution is a known tales combo master since original vesperia check him out
@@istizzz I've been subbed to the man for yeeeeaaars lol

"If you feel confident you won't get attacked, use arts" - Dude this tip is so simple yet highly effective, it improved my survivability while being more aware of what I am doing next.
That’s the key! Just being aware of what you’re pressing is super important in this game!
Yeah, people like to complain about long ending animations. My advice to those players is "Don't be stupid, stupid!"
@@justindallman8943 I got to the point after the second boss where I more actively swap to people to reposition them.
Alphen: I'M A HIT EM WITH MY SWORD!
Me from Shionne PoV: Ok but you could you not eat the entire dragon breath attack? AND WHY THE F*** ARE YOU THAT CLOSE ANYWAYS RINWELL!?
Rinwell: Gotta show Law i can take a hit too.
Law: Challenge Accepted! I will die doing the most damage with my awakening or not fight at all. *dies* Guess I won't fight then.
@@allmightygir4865 omg yes ai rinwell be like castin infront of 3 enemys and shionne sometimes just doesnt heal lol
This tip is also usefull for Alphen ^^ when you know you are not the target its the moment to sacrifice most of your hp for a big attack ;)
When using Alphen do NOT forget your flaming attacks. I was hesitant at first because of the HP cost but Shionne is pretty good at keeping you alive
Great tip! I was initially hesitant myself because I don’t generally like sacrificing hp for more damage, but it is so worth it for Alphen!
I love em too, but if your not careful you could drain your CP pretty quick from the constant healing
@@MadeInBmore23 Yeah, that should be used to up the pressure on the opponent, not as a reactive or defensive move on your part, since the damage will stack up on you real quick, like Law getting critted quick!
@@BacklogBattle The duality of man. Meanwhile I was trying to charge up and sacrifice HP before I even had the charge ability unlocked.
I will often use basically all my HP to combo extend especially on weaker targets.
Appreciate how you broke down everything clearly and did a short recap at the end of each section, it gets difficult for a new player like me to remember all these things !
Thank you for taking the time to share and for setting us up for success! All the best on all future endeavors!
I'm a long time veteran of the series, and I have to say the hardest thing to get used to in all of the Tales games is that you can't just spam inputs. I recommend newer players practice measured, attentive button presses on the smaller enemies early on to train yourself.
Great video Alex! I haven't grabbed Arise yet (definitely going to soon) but I'll probably refer back to this later.
Thanks for watching either way!
You can blame the Tales developers for that as they do an absolutely abysmal job of explaining their combat system every single time.
I'm a long time Tales of fan too and I've never jammed buttons and I'd lose interest if I could
Thanks bro, this really helped me starting out, I've never played any of the other tales releases, the whole vid was packed full of useful info, thanks again.
For a side note, shionne's boost skill also useful to taking down jumping enemies. This one isn't included in her boost skill description, but it informed by her during balseph boss battle
Thanks for that! Good tip!
This is SO helpful! I learned things that I never figured out when playing the demo. I haven't been out to pick up my copy yet but these tips will definitely come in handy when I play later tonight. Thanks!!
You’re welcome! Glad to have been of help!
As a complete newcomer to the series thos guide has been incredibly helpful especially the tip about turning combat control to manual
As a newcomer to the Tales series, your video is beyond helpful! Thank you for being so informative without just forcing a single type of playstyle. I’m a few hours into the game and it feels like I’m not making full use of the combat mechanics. Maybe I’m just not absorbing the tutorials well enough, but the way you’ve laid everything out makes sense of the mechanics super clearly. Much appreciated!
I don’t like imposing my play style on people because everyone plays games differently! So if there’s a way for me to reframe certain things so more people understand, then I feel like I did my job! Thank you for watching!
Fantastic review. Ive been playing this the last few days and couldn't agree more
Great vid ! A little tip about Rinwell Boost attack is that this can hit multiple enemies in a not so small area ! If you have 2 enemies close to each other casting, she will stop both of them (but the charge will be of the one you targeted).
Thanks a lot Alex! Even if i was just watching, i had NO CLUE what i was actually watching.
Combat is always better with understanding of it.
It's not about just watching the gameplay, but also hearing some of the context! Naturally, you'll need to be familiar with some of the terms from the game since it does do a good job of teaching people how to play the game. This just adds a little bit more to give people the confidence to really experiment with the various systems in the game!
I just came to this game now, a couple years later, when the DLC on sale caught my eye and drew me to the title. Somehow I missed this when it came out. Having an absolute blast with it, but the combat is very tricky. This video was immensely helpful in increasing my enjoyment of the excellent story by making combat so much less obscure. It looks like an action game, but it plays more like a strategy action game.
Thank you for exposing these mysteries..you definitely achieved your mission statement: not a step by step guide on how to play the game, but rather an understanding that develops into informed playstyle
I'm glad you get it! It's better to understand how things work rather than be told how you should play the game! Always been a fan of this approach!
Another 12 out of 10 video. Easy to understand for both beginners and experts! I just downloaded the game as my collectors edition was delayed. Can’t wait to sink in!
Ahh thank you for your support!
Incredible beginner tips! I am a beginner to the Tales series and your video greatly helped me. 5/5! Thank you
ik i'm late but this video is really well done and very easy to follow along with. I'm about 43hrs into my 1st playthough and i've played a few of the tales games before but this guide helped me a lot to grasp combat better.
So many people discover this video when they’re hours in! Either way, glad you found it! You can always use the knowledge when you replay the game!
This is a great overview of the battle system! I remember following you after watching the atelier Ryza battle system guide. love to see this kind of overview. I’m gonna share as much as I can, this content deserves to be seen.
Thank you so much! Funny you mention it but I watched that video to get inspired to make this!
Great vid! Loving this game but there were elements of the in game tutorials that I missed... Perfectly and succinctly filled in by your good self... Cheers!
You’re welcome! Glad to have helped you learn the game more!
Really well done video, my man! I'm a Tales veteran and have reached a point in the game where I'm struggling to beat some of the more powerful stuff in mid to late game when some general turn-based strategy with a small amount of button mashing is no longer effective enough!
I had forgotten the ability to switch characters in and out from previous Tales games and had basically not even tried Mystic Artes much after previous Tales games made it so hard. Now that I know different ones have different recovery times, I can decide when to safely build up to a nuke or just use a quicker/safer option rather than ignore them entirely...
One additional piece of advice for people struggling with CP; disable resurection arts. These things are extremely costly and life bottles are a lot cheaper than cp recovery items and if you often craft you'll be needing for gald pretty often as the biggest source is the few sidequests and chests that contain gald (fights don't really give much even at higher difficulty)
Great tip on disabling resurrection Artes! Never done that but that’d definitely help prolong CP!
@@BacklogBattle Honestly I never even thought of it on my own after playing a good 25h on hard mode lmao
I hit a point where I was spending more CP than I recovered so I looked up if anyone had found a decent way and someone was like "why not just turn off the reason why you're out of CP in the first place?" hahaha
That said, once you unlock fishing, grinding money becomes pretty simple, as the fish can be sold for a surprisingly large amount of gald. Just a matter of whether you're willing to do the fishing.
@@Madmushroom64 Ah yeah naturally there are ways to get money, that was more meant for those going straight for the story (which I assume most people that are new to tales of will do)
Super helpful to a new player like me, so thank you for making a clear video.
As a newcomer, I HIGHLY recommend Shionne over Rinwell for beginner at-range character. Rinwell's magic layering system is actually pretty complex and locks you into animations much longer than Shionne's arts. Also Shionne is the second character you get.
Loved this video and this game! I usually only play shorter games, but I'm 70 hours into this one and keep going I'm enjoying it so much, on top of the amazing story.
Great tips! I really enjoy playing as Rinwell, love to be strategic and combine her spells. This game is a blast!
I need to play her more, admittedly!
Great video! Series newbie here, I just got the game, the recap part was so helpful, keep the good work dude!
Great analysis there! Tales of Arise's battle system has some deep and fun mechanisms. It's a huge step up from previous games! So thanks for sharing 😄👍🏽.
Heavy disagree. Combat dosent compare to xillia 2 or graces
@@eliajshdjddj You're right. Graces was fun, I really loved how each characters had 2 fighting styles.
And I wouldn't mind having a remaster for both Graces, Xillia or some localized ports of Destiny DC and Rebirth!
Wow, halfway through the video I subscribed. How does this guy not have more subscribers!
Thank you so much!
Absolutely fantastic, thanks so much for clearly explaining the basics, huge help, just about to start up the game.
Great video, glad I found your channel. 👍🏻
Awesome! I'm glad this has been able to help you out! Be sure to post any additional questions if you still have them!
As someone who played a lot of DMC/Dark souls etc and just a little bit of tales this is so usefull. Great video.
Never rly could get into tales somehow. And i have rly tried... Think this game will be different. So far, 10 hours in, the combat and exploration feels so much better then past tales games too me. This may turn out to be one of my favourite rpg's of all time!
Glad to be of help! I had the same problem with earlier Tales games too until I figured out that they’re designed like fighting games! Once I realized that, everything started to make sense!
This game has the worst combat compared to xillia 2 and graces to me
Was trying to figure out if we could swap 5/6th member for current member during battle. This video has it at 11:36... thank u!
This is an amazing guide. Thanks dude. Very well done.
Wow this is seriously the best Tales of combat overview I've ever seen! Great job! Glad I discovered your channel from the Miss Bubbles collab vid :)
You’re very welcome! Glad I could help in some way!
This video is so clutch. I’m already 50hrs in but this is gonna make things sooooo much smoother
That’s awesome! Glad to have helped!
Hands-down one of the best explanation. Just subscribed. Keep up the awesome work
Thank you so much!
I did the same thing! Just subscribed solely because of how helpful this video is!
Learned about defensive boost usage and refreshing gauge. Doing great with Alphen, but got to learn them all for arena now. Also liked the emphasis on animation recovery: never had I seen a game so punishing in this aspect that a arte executes when i resurrect, just because the input was before i died.
I can't believe I have made it so far into the game without understanding what I'm doing lol
Gonna be more mindful from now on thanks for the great vid!!!
You’re welcome!
I'm 9 hours in, just arrived at Cysloden and I am LOVING THIS GAME
Great video, some really helpful tips for someone like me starting the tales games with this one. The one thing I’m not getting the hang of is keeping that combo going still only 6-7 hours in atm though
That's still very early! Once you unlock more Artes or even extend your Normal Attack limit, you'll be able to extend this! Keep going!
Perfectly delivered video. Bravo 👊🏾
As a series veteran, my piece of advice is DO NOT MASH BUTTONS. This game is exceptionally punishing at times, so be prepared to treat hard fights and some normal mob battles with more than a single braincell.
Are you talking about some harder dififculties(i play on the one above normal) beacuse i have quite the opposite experience and as all jrpgs i find that this game is quite easy simply beacuse you can essentialy grind to Victory. And no boss stand a Chance against 15 Orange gels, no matter how strong he is.
@@KrolPawi HARD difficulty is still tame, when they meant higher difficulties its usually CHAOS difficulty, in that difficulty your party could be decimated in a flash if you dont pay attention to enemies pattern especially on post game super bosses.
@@exion2011 Man I am suffering here hahahahah how do you make the game easier ?
I've been playing Tales since the first one, Tales of Phantasia, oh the memories. The second Tales I played was Tales of Eternia another amazing Tales game. The third was Tales of Symphonia, possibly one of the best Jrpgs I've played up to that time. I can't believe the series is still going.
Ive been playing and loving this game for the past month. In the past I got stuck fairly early in Tales of Vasperia and dropped it. For the most part of this game I have been playing on moderate.. however.. in the 2nd realm I had to start playing on story difficulty for most of the major bosses. Im near the end now but wouldn't be if it wasn't for the story difficulty.
Thank you for this awesome tutorial, step by step and straight to the point. At first i was like why my arts cant be cancled into a dodge eventhough i got the skill easy to dodg/guard and i thought it was a bug or something haha, thanks to your guide i have gotten used to the mechanics, epic love it 👍🤘
I love this! I’m very happy to read that my guide helped you out! May you have many high scoring combos ahead!
Really helpful video! Still struggling somewhat with the combat. Played as Alphen until now, gonna give Rinwell a try. I like her character and staying back suits me…
I think for how combat is Kisara actually feels great with how the game plays! When you get her, I highly recommend checking her out too!
Ahh this video explains it well thanks! I finally have this game and I have some tips I want to know.
Great video, perfectly explained. Thank you.
I'm a button mashing, hack and slash person at heart, so it is going to take some effort for me to enjoy this combat. I made the mistake of expecting it to be just like Tales of Berseria, so when I found out I couldn't put a chain of artes on each button, I wasn't very happy. I'm playing other games right now, but hopefully, I'll get back into Tales of Arise soon
I hope so! I always say that if a good game doesn’t click now, then perhaps later it will! That’s how I’ve been treating the Souls games!
THANK YOU! You're the 1st to mention how Alphen's Boost atk downs enemies.
That's nuts! It's super important to know that!
Just got the game, this is so good! Thank you!
You’re very welcome!
New to jrpg. Great video. Love the.chapter recaps
Considering all the options you have in combat, I feel like they did an incredible job mapping the default control scheme. Like having L2 bring up not only your reserve party members, but your reserve artes as well feels simple yet very clever. Great video! My copy should be arriving in the next couple hours and now the wait is even more painful lol
It really is clever, isn't it? The L2 button does a lot of work to make this battle system work!
@@BacklogBattle How do you choose or set the reserve artes ?
@Pierre Frigault Do you have it unlocked yet?
@@Vidred007 Yeah that'll be something you'll unlock naturally at a certain point later in the game.
Dude you should be hired by BamCo and use this video as an in game tutorial. Super clear and very newbie friendly
Thank you so much! Glad you found this helpful!
I checked out the demo for this game and didn't really get a sense for all of this depth, but this video makes it sound really cool
I think it's partly because they didn't talk about a lot of the stuff I went over! You can pretty much take a lot of what I said in this video and apply it to the demo and a lot of it will work!
Great explanation man. Really appreciate it. I usually play turn based rpg, so when I started playing tales of arise, I was like - what on earth is happening on my screen, LOL. Anyways thank you again for the consice explanations.
No problem! Glad I could help!
I’m happy you can do Mystic Artes a lot simpler on here unlike Tales of Berseria. It was soooo tough to do them on there.
I love the changes in Arise! That’s a great change
Just picked this game up and this video was super helpful.
Fantastic! Glad to have helped you with the game’s combat!
Thanks for this, I didn't even know that I'm able to switch characters mid animation basically
Rinwell it is. Great guide overall, thank you!
You’re welcome!
This was really helpful, thank you!
Some of the most well structured game tutorials. You should be way more popular.
Thank you so much! I'm just glad I'm able to help out!
Thank you for this video. I am brand new to this type of game. Definitely subscribing
You're welcome! I'm making two more guides, which are coming out in the next couple of days!
I’m new to the Tales of Series. I picked this up because I was interested in it’s sort of fast paced combat. This guide should help. I’m still getting use to attacking with the R1 button. I’m playing on PS4. Thanks for the tips man.
You can also remap R1 should you wish!
I remapped the artes attacks to triangle, r1,r2 and made a huge difference
as mentioned here, boost attack really powerful. i recommend anyone who started to prioritize learning the boost skill so you can extend your combo longer
Boost Breaks are super useful! Definitely helps extend combos!
i didn't expect to like the Semi-Auto mode so much, it's not bad to be able to pay more attention to combos, and what the enemies around you are doing.
It’s one of the reasons why they put it there!
Most of the game I feel like I'm poking at the enemy. Thanks for the tip! I didn't know you can switch out party members mid battle. That'll definitely help!
You're welcome!
This is my first Tales game and I'm coming here as a fan of the Xenoblade Chronicles saga. I love my action based fighting RPG's but I never felt like I actually understood what was going on during battles and was just fluking it along. When I had to fight Dohalim, I managed to win on my 1st attempt, but only because I abused my healing items. So I deliberately kept restarting the fight until I won through skill. It's at this point I came to your video because for me to enjoy this game I want to know and understand what it is that I am doing during the fights and not just button bash and hope for the best. I will take on what you said in this video and hopefully enjoy my battle encounters going forward. Thanks
This is my first Tales game. Tried the demo first and didn't like the combat because I didn't understand the mechanics. Saw this video and now I think is one of the best combats I've ever played in an rpg. Thanks man.
You're very welcome! Hope you enjoy the game
Thanks alot with this video! Didn't realize the semi auto is the reason why my character have to run up to the enemy to use the skills, thought that's how the game works and got annoy by it until I watch this video.
I knew that was going to come in handy! Glad to be of help!
yeah... same case here
Im still fairly early in the game, just in the 2nd city/cyslodia but so far i felt like i didnt get the full potencial out of the combat which seems way simpler but deeper than the 2 previous games.
A friend recommended me this vid so time to learn
Hope my video helps you out!
My tip: Reigning Slash, Reigning Slash, Reigning Slash, Reigning Slash, Reigning Slash, Reigning Slash, Reigning Slash.
I've already plat. the game so I'm not sure why I'm here but still...great video! Very useful.
Thank you for making this video
No problem!
General tips for those new to the series: as tempting as it can be, do not charge head on to the enemy. Roll your way to their rear and smack the normal attack until enemy in break status then spam those artes! Rinse and repeat.
If things gets too spicy for you, know that theres a craftable accessory substat that makes enemy target you less often. Imo, the enemy NEVER target you at all with that . Idk its just me or i just like to smack them from the rear lmao.
Im playing in hard mode and doing good at it. Normal mode should be a breeze for newcomers as long as you follow the tips given above. Cheers
Great tips! Thank you for posting!
@Paul W you’re correct! So you boost their evasion Windows and their corresponding activations!
Dodging counts as an action for the purpose of maintaining your attack string, while allowing you to recharge your AG.
This is most apparent with casters using the skill that reduces casting time based on combo length, as long as your constantly dodge when your not casting, you’ll retain your short cast times. The big casts that take 2 seconds or so can be dropped back to back with .5 second cast times, and because of this rinwell becomes one of the most powerful characters
I feel like a dummy for not finding this before buying the game 12 hours ago….very well put together and simple to follow I can’t figure out how to switch threw enemies so I’m hoping this video covers it
You hold the L1/LB button then press Left or Right on the D-Pad
@@BacklogBattle thank you sir!!
@@BacklogBattle oh ya do you have a video about what skills are the best to unlock? Do you get to unlock all of them? Is it better to unlock all 5 of 1 to get the extra (plus 10 attack) or (plus 20 defense) and so on?
@@cliftonsargent1572 I do have a guide for Skills! Just go to my channel and it’ll be there!
Great video. I personally think the combat is a huge step down (but tbf Zestiria and berseria are too) but there's still fun to be had
Hoi are ons of the very few that thinks that is the case. Almost all find it the logical step in the tales series as fas as combat is concerned.
This could also be titled "Things you wish you knew about Tales of Arise before putting 30+ hours into the game."
That seems to be the case for several people in the comments 😅
Rinwell and Alphen have both clutched it when the whole party die when fighting boss monsters in quests. I clutched it with the wind monkey and fire dragon in Menancia with Alphen and Rinwell respectively.
This was very helpful, thank you.
You're very welcome! Glad to have helped!
I though you would've explained the nuance of each character special feature (Scorching attack for alphen, grenade ammunition for shionne, artes stacking for rinwell, awakening for law, guarding with kisara and rod extension for dohalim). It is essential to learn to use these feature when playing each character to maximise their potential and it's also very fun to vary gameplay.
Dodging in between hits with alphen restores 1ag
Start SB, dodge then attack with the second hit of your basic attack. You'll regain 1ag while still keeping your combo.
wow it looks so crisp. i wish i had more free time to catch up on all the amazing jrpgs this year
It's the Backlog Battle!
I am a veteran and my advise is beleave in your self and learn from your mistake and your enemy’s movements
Wow I didn't know u can switch in real-time, thanks for the tip now I can extend my combos and get pass hundred hits
thank you, im at the 4th lord and having a great time, but finding some of the systems are not explained well in game. thanks for clearing them up for mw~
You’re welcome!
I love this format, it's a bit different from what you usually do but I really like it, it's very easy to understand.
I have one question though do long combos have other benefits that experience points?
Longer combos and low enemy health make it easier to trigger Boost Strikes!
Thanks! This was awesome
Glad to help!
2:38 Not being able to not cancel artes has always frustrated me. I played both Tales of Arise plus Berseria and it had these problems where i would try to combo the opponent, but then my unfortunate timing happens where the enemy does a super armor attack that i cannot dodge due to no animation cancel which causes me to then take damage or even getting KO'ed..
Still, i do appreciate a well made guide on the game though. Nice job!~ 😇
Thank you very much! 😊
Great video 👍
Thanks!
The fact that you can't get away with button mashing is exactly why I love combat in the Tales series so much. I hate it when I'm playing an ARPG and I'm pressing buttons yet hardly feeling like I'm in control of what I'm doing
I’ve been told that the original creators were inspired by fighting games and even though they removed some of the more fighting gamey aspects in previous games, I can still feel that spirit in Arise. I mean Shionne’s Boost is literally Iron Man’s Proton Cannon in Marvel! LOL
Same. Battle gameplay that offers instant-gratification when it comes to attacking doesn't have as much impact compared to ones that require strategy/skill.
I find button-mashing games fun just for a very short while.
I think its also worth noting that when you're in the recovery state after your attack string, you can't attack, but you can still dodge, so you're not entirely vulnerable.
This is actually not true in all instances. It all depends on the last attack that triggered the state.
@@BacklogBattle really? nice to know. I'll have to keep that in mind when im experimenting with new arte mixes
OK this is definitely gonna be helpful when I get the game next week and the fact that you can swap characters in if they have a gauge filled up....... It's going to be so much fun comboing in this game evil laugh! Anyway not bad for a very 1st School lesson and can't wait for the next ones........ Currently imagining Shinonne and Kisara as teachers and Rinwell as a student aww!
There's so much to master in this game! I'm trying to get up to a 200 hit combo right now!
@@BacklogBattle Oh yes the famous 200 hit combo or even further beyond that AKA what all of those really good combo videos keep doing and almost feel like that they're mocking you that you can't do it....... I definitely know it'll be possible to do it in this game especially without cheating.
The only thing that the tutorial didn't teach me was that I'm able to switch party members in real time during combat which is game changing
I learned so much from this video.
Glad to have helped out!
Somethings not mentioned fully
1. You need to break an enemies guard to launch them into the air. They recover guard the second the word break disappears
2. The combo counter is based on the enemy not the player. Meaning the combo counter goes up as long as someone is hitting that enemy. This lets you hit 100+ combo easily
3. Combo damage decreases if you repeat the combo. So use a different Art each time when you string combos
I somehow got 100 hits by just beating on this one guy because they took so long to kill
And it was just a regular enemy, not an elite or boss
One minor thing to point out as a Manual player. while the game auto targets and shifts the camera for you, that does not mean moving forward will stay on target.
In Manual control, holding forward while attacking means you might push past your target. To remedy this, don't input a direction when you commit to a combo. Your character will automatically attack in the target's direction if none is inputted.
All around good tips, though I might need to watch it twice to digest some of the more technical points.
Great tips! And thanks for watching!
This helps IMMENSELY, especially with Law and his incredibly tiny range (and how easy it is for him to miss attacks).
@@RicochetForce I'll bet, but as you likely know, getting combos is very easy with Law when you can consistently land hits. glad it helped.
Does anyone have any tips for leveling up Shionne's aerial artes? I don't really play her but want her attacks to be stronger.
Awesome guide thx 🙏🏻
You’re welcome!
15:30: anyone can help here?
Ok for L1: I change my controlled character with d-pad and also change the target with the left stick by holding L1 down.
But indeed NOTHING happens when I try to „swap“ as described in the video. So this „reserved character boost“ doesnt work for me. Whatever I do with L2, it does not react 😩
What do I miss here please? Sorry. 😬
