Traxxas Revo 3.3 | Stay Nitro or Go Electric?

- Опубликовано: 10 фев 2025
- The Revo 3.3 has given me no mercy, mostly due to my lack of knowledge on nitro. The EZ start system was not working, there was smoke coming from the EZ start motor. There was also no power going to the glow plug, and at times to the EZ start motor. If I decide to stay nitro, I will remove the EZ start system completely which will fix most my issues. Don’t get me wrong I love nitro, but nitro doesn’t love me back.
Comment if you’d like to see an electric conversion to a Castle Creations 2000kv or 2200kv 4s/6s motor. Or would you like to see the EZ start system removed, and a OS carb.

I’ve received several comments on what could be wrong, haha I’ve answered this a lot so I figured I’d just pin this for everyone. The issue was no power to the glow plug, the wire was open somewhere causing a no start. Thank you to everyone for the help, you guys are all awesome.
Appreciate your videos, I got the same Revo, been hard work trying to keep this thing running, Australia 🦘
I just got us Revos 3.3 and 1/16 VXL for me and Son. Still in boxes for Christmas.
Can’t wait… Like your vids with your kids.
That’s awesome, you guys will love them for sure. If you have a clicking issue down the road with the Merv check out my repair for it.
That’s exciting man enjoy and merry Christmas 🛻💨💯
@@redbanditracingThere’s a great informative tuning vid by Invisible RC channel. Very detailed….
Merry Christmas!
I was an electric guy for years. For me it got boring. So I left the hobby and sold all my cars and gear. I got the itch for RC again but went nitro. I have 3 now and find that over time you learn how to handle the little quirks that make nitro seam hard. I have a T Maxx classic I got nearly new for half the cost on eBay. So much fun I bought a new revo3.3 and then on a whim the slash 3.3. Anything else I get will be electric just for ease of use. Don’t get rid of your nitros. Eventually I think you’ll regret it.
Thank you for the comment, I have a few different nitros I wanna try in the future.
I like nitro, but now I mostly run 6S Arrma. I have been able to do things that I could not with nitro, and not brake parts. The amount of power on tap, reliability, maintenance, has no match.
The only nitro I run, and it is called by the rc pilots, glow engines which is really the correct terminology, are in rc airplanes, tank, prop and engine, easy.
With nitro rc cars there are too many variables that go wrong, and half the time I come back not even running them because some stupid thing.
Electrics I just slap a battery and off we go bash them until the wheels fall off
Great video. I just got the T-MAXX 3.3. Stay nitro. I started with nitro. I've had electric , there's nothing like the smell of nitro. It is a pain in the butt. But once u got it running good ur good
I agree, after getting the Losi 8ight I’ve started liking nitro. I think the break in process Traxxas recommends is what hurt that 3.3 I used a much better break in procedure and it paid off.
@redbanditracing I just finished the break in cycle. I feel they are going to discontinue all nitros they really don't come out with new models. I do like the Traxxas link that's a cool option
Their Nitro support is very bad as well, and that doesn’t make people wanna buy their nitros. And yeah they have made any new models, or improved the motors.
@@redbanditracing yea it is I had more help from the hobby shop I bought it from
Cool to see no matter what. You guys have a good Rc channel thanks 4 all the videos 💯👍
Thank you, really appreciate it
First thing I do to all my nitros is change the ez start/roto start to pull start
Use the dynamite lipo glow igniter. Miles better than the other standard ones. Fires some of my engines up when the standard ones won’t. Also lasts a lot longer and charges so no batteries to deal with.
You will figure out the tuning and how to get the engine running better. Give it time and practice. When in doubt, return the carb to stock settings and adjust one needle at a time and see how it reacts. return the needle back and try the next one. You will learn.
Make sure the filter is clean. Clean the outside of the filter tube before removing. You don’t want any dirt or crud going into the carb.
Change the glow plug to an OS plug either #8 or lc3 or lc4
Once she starts running right and you get more comfortable with working on it, and that two speed keeps hitting…you’ll be hooked
Great information thank you. I am using the OS ic3 glow plugs. The replacement engine I got had a pull start come with it, so I’m going to install that for sure this weekend. I’ll look into that igniter for sure.
Keep it nitro dude! It can be a hassle at times, but dont let it defeat you.
I have a Revo that I bought dirt cheap from someone who gave up doing a brushless conversion. It had the tekno mounting hardware already, and after selling some of the old parts I didn't need it cost me about $50. I Did the 2nd gear mod to the transmission, switched to a single servo, and installed a blx 100 and 3200kv motor and it absolutely rocks on 3s. 12t 50t gearing seems perfect for playing with my dog in the yard. Lots of power to spin the wheels from a standstill. It already had Rpm arms all around and I have it set to the lowes ride height and it handles great. I have an Arrma Granite aswell and the Revo is becoming my favorite car, especially being so much easier to clean.
Sounds like nice setup, I was going to go electric before selling the Revo. Of your on IG send us some pics of your RC.
That losi 8 you got now sure runs better than the revo ever did
Use a glow plug igniter it works better with easy starter
Just ordered me a Revo 3.3 hopefully i can get it figured out.
To be honest it’s preference, I started with nitro and loved the smell of fuel and also the noise when tuned just right, I didn’t like the mess and the engine tuning every time you took it out. I converted to electric a few years ago and havnt really looked back. So much fun so much speed and the versatility was a win for me, downside is cost of lipos and chargers, parts, and time spent wrenching lol but it’s worth it for the fun factor alone 😂 I have so many cars now that they are taking over but I wouldn’t go back to nitro if m honest. Electric is just the way forward imo
I agree, I will be giving it a few more attempts. At least when I get frustrated and can’t run the nitro, I can just plug a battery in my Sledge and blow off steam at 50+MPH haha. Thanks for the comment, I’m sure electric is the way I’ll be going.
My ez start did the same thing I got mad and took a hammer to it and it fixed it lol🎉😅
Scared it straight haha
Back in the day I had a lot of problems with a jato 3.3 . I have kyosho usa 1 nitro I have to admit the Kyosho nitro motors seem very easy to tune and keep good temps. Brother the usa 1 is on sale now the thing is a beast
I’m gonna check that out for sure, thank you
@@redbanditracing everybody loves this thing the scale look is amazing and it's fun as hell to drive because its a solid axle monster truck . it did have some problems with the 3 speed but kyosho fixed alot of the problems
When the Day feels like it gonna be hot Rich it & when the Day or evening when it feels chilly .. then Lean it .
OS11k and save the headache also ditch the blue wire and put an actually ignitor on it and run OS for plugs i have this same truck almost COMPLETELY rebuild the way it should have come as an option... because the cost is not cheap... most important CLEAN THAT AIR FILTER EVERY HOUR OF RUN TIME... your running stock plug and stock carb settings and it's fouling the plug because it's to rich.... it needs a hotter plug and leaner carb... the OS stuff will DEFINITELY BE A VAST IMPROVEMENT
Great advice, thank you. I was going to switch to the OS11K because of all the positive reviews.
I've personally converted a few of the Revo 3.3 models and 2.5 models, I used the Tekno conversion kits on all the conversions and did the single speed lockout on the transmission. I did these conversions for other people that I work on RC's for after they had seen that I had converted two of mine to electric. After doing all the conversions, I will say it is fun to do and Is something different but that's about where the food stops. Traxxas did not build the drivetrain components on any of their earlier brushless model RC'S to be able to handle the abuse of the torque from a brushless motor, add a weak Transmission from the Revo 3.3 to the mix and now you have an even weaker drive line. I would recommend just keeping this one nitro and possibly keeping for a changeup every now and then when you might wanna run nitro or sell it and buy you a RTR brushless rig or even better a brushless kit.
OS 11K carb will be better for sure. you can always put in dynamite engine as well it is a little more expensive but it is the entire engine. That engine is very reliable. In nitro a glow plug ignitor is a must. dynamite has a lipo ignitor. I have had good luck with it
I have a few nitros, including a Jato 3.3, that I certainly will keep around. I’ve since bought electrics, but I’ll fire up my nitros again at some point.
I will eventually get back into it, wasn’t happy with the quality from Traxxas or the support.
Nitro vet here, there's very little smoke coming from the exhaust which tells me your needles are set too lean. Set your low speed needle so the engine stalls after 5 secs when you pinch the fuel line. Make each adjustment in 1/8th turns. Then set your high speed needle so the engine is running around 230 degrees F and make sure you have a trail of smoke when you are wide open throttle.
Bump boxes are magical...you have to out a bigger flywheel on it though...
I’ll look into one, that Dynamite motor needs to drop more to work I heard.
Great video sir. I can only assume the easy start didn't work at first cause the motor was last turned off in the pinch zone (tdc). Did the flywheel move by hand when you tried to spin it? Try richening the high speed needle 1/4 turn cause it seems to be running lean. I know you want to go with the pull start but check your ground wire to the motor or make sure your spur gear didn't make contact with any wires.
The vehicle is always at BDC after running, the EZ start was having issues for sure. Found no power to the glow plug. I picked up a nice igniter, had the pull start ready to install, and a subscriber of the channel purchased the Revo. I will say I’m not giving up on nitro, my next nitro will most likely be a Losi Eight T. Thank you for the comment
@@redbanditracing Thanks for the update. I'm a fan of all types. It's all about having fun.
Nitro is a hassle for sure, but fun. Id say keep the nitro for now and hopefully things get easier. Though I would buy a spare pull starter. I remember breaking the cord a long time ago and then doing at that work to have fun and drive it for nothing....good luck!
Will do, this weekend should be better.
I got 7 Nitro and 4 electric Rc's.I prefer Nitros but electric Rc's are sure less of a hassle to maintain.
Just enjoy RC😊
also before you give up on nitro try another vehicle such as kyosho. Their rtr motors are easy to tune and are reliable. my first nitro was a t-maxx 2.5 back in 2003. I almost gave nitro up due to the issues with that engine. I am glad I did not throw in the towel on nitro. I run nitro, electric and gas rc and they all have there positives and negatives
I don’t know man, I myself really would love to get a nitro car as I have never had one. They look so fun to tinker with.
But I have 4 little electric ones and they are so easy to just pull out an play.
I bought an igniter, I’m gonna remove the EZ start system and try that. If it helps all the trouble I’m having I’ll update everyone. But yes after owning a nitro, I love the electric side a lot more.
get the OS carb it will make you feel good about nitro agiain minimal needle adjustments holds the low end tune a lot better the 3.3 cab gives too much or too little fuel on the low speed and gives you wonky tunes
also can keep the electric start ease of the ez start just use your own glow ignitor and ditch the blue and yellow wires
can do that for now and hold off on the carb or just do it and you will not regret it
looking forward to updates
Just did revo 3.electric myself
No more headaches with nitro
Electric because nitro is just too much of a hassle you have to buy fuel get it tuned right Plus they don't like starting in cold weather
Very true, I will be removing EZ start system this weekend and trying it again. But it would be cool to run on 4s/6s. Plus the suspension on that truck is very nice, it would rip on a track.
They make engine heaters that go around the cooling head. Makes for very easy cold starts. Or I just bought a cordless heat gun because it’s also a great tool for the house. 20 seconds or so with a heat gun it will fire right up
@@redbanditracing don’t give up on that revo, i’ve had a few..i do a few things. I install hot racing aluminum 3-shoe clutch setup with M2C clutch nut(M2C1082). O.s 11k carb, use vp fuel 25/9, lc3 or Lc4 glow plug and they run great no issues. Low oil content does not damage the engine. You can use fuel with 8-12% oil content. The lower the oil content the easier to tune. I stay away from traxxas fuel altogether, i’ve heard their fuel has 16-18% oil content meaning too high and harder to tune. If you feel more comfortable with a pull-start, by all means.
I know this is an old video but STAY NITRO! If you want electric, buy electric and have both.
Thank you, check out our Losi 8ight. Revo was a loss, but we did get another Nitro.
Where are my Nitro people at ? .. I hear all these electric, going around ..I’m sure they take there cars to mechanics 🧰 😅 . I’m sticking to nitro , I’ve had electric back in the 80’s . And it was alright.. I couldn’t wait to own a Nitro or fuel Rc .. I’ll say I prefer nitro I have nitro 4 tec / Revo 3.3 / electric classic Bruiser converted to a Crawler .Bruiser is the latest catch brought back from the 85 era in to the Future conversion . 😅
Nothing wrong with Nitro, they are awesome. The things is people don’t wanna do the maintenance, electric is faster, and cheaper. We gotta grow the Nitro community
Nitro Rc cars are a pain to deal with.
So does electric. 3 batteries dead In a year...
Why did the batteries die?
@@redbanditracing overheating.
Sounds like mixture not prep right and 3 rd gear is stuck needs to be adjusted
I would like to see how troubleshooting
I don’t know anything about gas rc
Thank you
Running Revo this weekend, I’ll do my best. Thank you
FYI What is happing is your receiver battery is low so it will stop your glow plug from igniting !!!
Read the comments, it’s the power wire to the glow plug. It wasn’t received power to ignite, probably an open in the wire. Was gonna switch it to a pull start with an igniter.
OK did you perform the after run oil procedure ? and is your battery fully charged in the starter unit ?
The EZ start failed, there was no power at the glow plug.
@@redbanditracing That sucks I have had my Revo for about 1 1/2 years and no problems so far !!!
Nitro just seems like a major pain in the ass. You spend more time worrying about how it’s going to run than actual having fun
You really gotta love it, cause your 100% right
Nitro or nothing. Yes electric can be fun but not for long. They just get old. No soul to it
I ditched mine becuase it was too much upkeep and not enough runtime to enjoy it. if you like adjusting, cleaning, and pulling your hair out get a Traxxas nitro.
Stay nitro, the Revo transmission cannot take modern brushless systems. And nitro is much better anyway!
This small block traxxas motors are really finicky to run and tune. I’d recommend a proper 8th scale truggy, like a losi 8ight t rtr. Big block nitro motors are way easier to tune and run. Once you learn how to tune with precision, I’d then go back to these traxxas motors.
I’ve heard nothing but good things about Traxxas 2.5, and Losi Eight T nitro. I might wait and try the Losi, a friend has that model and runs great.
Electric has it's place but it's like driving an automatic sports car. Nitro is where the real men go to play. Sure you might be faster but you sound like a really strong hair dryer.
I agree and disagree haha I like the comment though. Hard to be a man when your Nitro is being destroyed by a Sledge or XMAXX. And that’s if your even on the track yet cause your stuck tuning it. I’d agree 💯 if we’re talking American muscle Vs EV
@redbanditracing Forgot to mention, the Jato 3.3 with some mods is no joke. 70+ mph
nitro in my opinion sucks now, even on the best day it's mostly cons, people still go nitro in spite of the cons, not for any of the pros, cuz there isnt any anymore, nitro is all cons, everything nitro does can be done better, cheaper, faster, more reliable with electric. i'm not bashing on nitro folks, your kids will run nitro with you, but no children want to endlessly faff about trying to get it started and then spend 30 mins fighting to keep the truck running for 5 mins without cutting off, not when a brushless system will run a nitro truck over and out perform it by a lot for less money and time wasted on it (nitro engines never ever run right after the first few months) nothing wrong with liking nitro, but it's 100% dead now, just a few hold outs left, i would say buy a nitro, build it out the best it can and then you can at least have a legit reason for having a shelf queen RC truck, Nitro looks cooler (imo) i'm trying to find one rn used but they are all trash by the time someone sells a nitro, they got sick of tuning and wrenching and run it leaned out until they cant start it up ever eventually. like every single used nitro is bad lol i just want a old rustler but, people want 400$ for a decent shape one or 175 for one thats destroyed.
The Losi 8ight runs great with near no tuning so far. For those not familiar with nitro and fighting tuning an already bad motor, doesn’t inspire anyone to stay nitro. Gotta spend the money on a decent model.
The cylinder was vacuum locked
Not vacuumed locked, no power to glow plug
weak battery? It might be running to rich
Open power wire to glow plug
id so electric
