  • Audiophiles lend us your ears. The Neumann U67 is a microphone hallowed for it wonderful sound. Now you can listen to it with different tubes to see the effect. Turn up your speakers and let the knowledge flow.
In this video we listen to five different EF86 / 6267 variants in the newly manufactured Neumann U67. Introduced in the spring of 2018, this resurrected tube microphone defined the sound of the 60s. The tubes in this shootout are:
    Neumann selected, Russian made EF86
    1950’s Holland made Amperex EF86
    1960’s German made Valvo EF86
    1950’s British made Genalex Z729 / EF86
    German made Telefunken EF86
The U67 tube microphone was connected to an API 512C microphone preamp and then directly into Pro Tools HD. No signal processing was used. The sound you hear is straight from the microphone with no EQ, no compression … nothing.
Can you hear a difference between the different tubes? Let us know what you think. We look forward to your thoughts.

lol swap all the tubes you want. You'll still be hearing a Taylor guitar.

I know, right! Of all the great guitars out there and they record that POS to 'audiophile-measure' a world class mic?!?

I changed mine to Telefunken after trying Valvo and the Russian tube it comes with, greater lo end and silkyier hi end, second best the Valvo. This shootout confirms my experience.

They all sound a little different, but I can’t say which is best! All good options

I think I preferred the Valvo EF86. Next would be the telefunken. Seemed though the valvo has more bottom (or low mids) and that seemed to be what this mic lacks in the other shootouts compared to vintage ones.

My choice (at least in this demo) is the stock tube, or the Tele. So many variables, but at least here, I thought all the other tubes sounded pinched with added unpleasant harmonics on the Valvo and British tube. Tele sounded the beefiest and fullest, but cheers to the stock tube, for it sound the most like a 'record.' A little more compressed and mid-forward that the Tele.

Tubes are linear devices. There can be great deviances between tubes, even from the same manufacturer and batches. You just have to find a tube that sounds good. There's nothing magical about them. As long as the right designs are followed you can have good tubes.

I favored the Telefunken tube, to my ears it sounded the most balanced, the other tubes also sounded good but I didn’t like the frequency of the other tubes, Tele EF86 for me.
I just bought a backup 1969 replacement Tele for my vintage u67, like butta

Honestly nothing wrong with the stock tube. Sounds great. I also like the amperex. My feeling about tubes is there are so many variables that in order for a real fair comparison you would need to compare 10 of each model with varying degrees of use and pick the best of each and then redo the comparison. Tubes I think tend to sound better with more use and you can have two of the same brand tube and one sounds great and one unuseable and everywhere between.

definitely telefunken sounds best, it's the most balanced and least harsh, original tube sounds pretty strident, if I was going to spend 7-8K on a mic I'd be getting the telefunken, mics of this cailbre are worth it.

I think the telefunken was the best hardly any thing in it between the English tube and telefunken, the English tube had better separation but the output was lower so with some adjustment I would say the English tube.

A valve doesn’t do much on low volumes. You need a strong vocal or drum overheads to hear the difference 😂😂😂😂

tube mic should be hung upside down.
The heat after a period of time can warp the diaphragm from heat rising to it...
Telefunken had a fuller lower end and sweeter highs... IMO

    • @Fos3tex
      @Fos3tex 3 года назад +3

Actually, the reasons that tube mics like the U47 were hung upside down was because the heat from the tube dried out the PVC M7 capsule's membrane faster than normal. The other reason was so that a performer could read from a music stand easier.

I like the Brit as well as the Tele... Clarity and full sound that was crisp, clean.
    German
Then the Russian one sounds dead inside, wasn't as responsive.

"Distinctly British sound" has the audacity of sounding exactly like all the other tubes.

Can't really tell a huge difference, If i were to make a brash judgement, i'd say the Telefunken actually sounded the worst (relative). The Valvo sounded the cleanest. But all sounded respectably the same.

Valvo is great considering the price, EH EF86 is worst of them all. All NOS sound similar to me with slight differences, British and Telefunken are way overpriced compared to other two.

Not a test, Too much human error possible. Also RUclips audio compression, would only be valid from a synthetic generated source, and oscilloscope as test results.
