    Advanced Audio microphones are the ultimate balance in quality sound, price, and useful features for any size studio.
    The familiar look, and solid construction gives professional musicians and engineers the confidence that they are getting the best possible sound.
    The Original Vintage Neumann U67 is Known for its legendary midrange presence. Which have made it the preferred workhorse microphone since it was used on vocals for the Beatles, The Bee Gees and for the famous Glyn Johns Drum Micing Technique.
    It's a great mic if you have $15,000 to spend.
    But why risk the investment on a microphone that old, that may easily start to crackle and need to be refurbished?
    Enter the CM67se which features Advanced Audio’s own AK67 capsule with a response matched within 2dB of the original Neumann K67.
    Advanced Audio has kept the original sound available for today’s musicians with the CM67 being the preferred choice for Fall out Boy’s Guitars and Anna Kendrick’s Vocals in the movie Pitch Perfect II.
    It’s upgraded 6072a circuit provides a lower output impedance with slightly more headroom than the original U67.
    The Dual bobbin output transformer provides faster transient response, less distortion than the original and a flat frequency response down to 20Hz for a more transparent frequency extension.
    The microphone body features a 80Hz HP filter and a -10dB pad 9 polar pattern feature - on the power supply$895 with robust shock mount and aluminum road case.

    This video just confirms what I basically felt with the AA CM67SE. I bought one last year and ended up swapping in a 3U Audio K47 capsule because I just didn't like what it was doing in the high-mids and highs.. The new capsule made it much more usable and sounding more like the U67 here, which sounds super smooth and takes to EQ so well. Thanks for taking the time to post the vid!

      I can say the same about my cm87. Something about the high-miss n highs has me thinking of swapping in a Peluso capsule.

    • @MattDavid
      @MattDavid Месяц назад

      @@demodeiowa I ended up putting the original capsule in and grew to appreciate it. While I don't like it as much as the U67 (at least, the one in this video) I still find it to be a really decent mic and I've been able to use it on a bunch of projects that turned out great. I guess at the end of the day, it's a tool to get a particular result, and I found a way to get the most out of it. Potentially the AA capsules aren't the greatest, I think they'd probably be the weakest link in the chain with these mics, so it would be interesting to see what results you'd get by going with a Peluso capsule. You could also look at OPR, Beesneez, Maiku and 3U capsules as viable options too,

    The Neumann has more midrange detail, realism, and depth with a smooth, almost compressed presentation. The Advanced Audio sounds harder, brighter, and more one-dimensional.
    I’m curious why the vocals and guitars were so distantly miked? In the vocal only examples, there were some boxy room reflections that muddied things up. It might have been helpful to hear more of the direct sound and have the singer work the proximity effect to taste. Just my two cents.

    • @legendaryrocklive4289
      @legendaryrocklive4289 3 года назад +2

      Agreed. These mics both perform best with proximity, and you would have heard the dimensionality of the 67SE which shines from 6" in.

    If Dave Thomas makes it, buy one. Or two. I have operated a studio for 40 years, and have owned (and in some cases still own) vintage Neumann, AKG, Sony and classic Royer, Coles, Shure, etc. and my go-to mics are always Advanced Audio. I own 4 of his 'Swiss-Army-knife' 414s and use them constantly, while my vintage AKG 414s sit in my mic closet. I bought his CM-49, and a few weeks later sold my Neumann 149. My CM-67SE sits on my Latch Lake mic stand as my go-to vocal mic. It sounds wonderful, and pairs perfectly with any good preamp (I have used it with Neve, Millennia, API, Trident, SSL, Dean Jensen Twin Servo, UA, Focusrite, Advanced Audio). Best price/performance in the industry..

      I've never been big on 414s but Dave's sound fantastic on everything, I reach for them way more often. Will have the 414 comparison up next week.

    The u67 definitely has a more airy top end. Whether that’s what one wants is up for debate I suppose. Having a flat mic is probably never a bad thing. Ditto with having enough money left over to pay your rent for the year

    Thanks for the shoot out! I was fortunate enough to get my start in '96 at 5-room facility w/a Mic Locker that had at least 4 of everything. If you put 3 vintage U67's head to head through 3 identical preamps, you'd get 3 different results. AA Mic's have a formula that works and at a very good price point. I took a chance on the CM800T. My clients could not tell difference between the C800G or AA's version. I can hear a difference, but it works well enough for people not to pay 9K for the Sony.

    • @rylandweet7750

      Hey I’m super interested in the cm800t , what are the differences between the Sony and the cm800t that you hear? I have a good ear with mics, kinda my specialty but I don’t hear much on the cm800t to really want to buy quite yet

    • @copetill7896
      @copetill7896 3 года назад +1

      @@rylandweet7750 I'd pull the trigger on it. I worked at Westlake in the '90's and we had 2 or 3 of them as well as 3 of every Mic you'd ever need. Most of the Artists that came in to track were Pop/R&B/Hip-Hop. It has a hint of a U67 and that nice high end boost around 8.5k that keeps going up. It's not sibilant like so many tube mics. I've pulled up a few Mixes that I worked on when Assisting for Death Row then compared it to a guy I work w/who has that kind of old-school sound. The results are just as good IMO. It's got all of the character of the C800 and when Clients hear themselves through the cm800t - BAE 1073 - LA2A they sing/perform better. I told a friend in LA to shoot out Mic's at VK-LA. He preferred the C800 then purchased one from AA and he'd swear it's the same mic. I prefer to the U87, 414eb, Mojave's flagship LDC, Telefunken's Alchemy Series. The next step up would be the Manley and my current favorite would be the Chandler REDD microphone. I've dealt w/many boutique builders that are a pain. Mine came w/a tube by a new co. in the US that was faulty within 3 hours. Dave FedX'd me a replacement. It was easy to swap out. I paid big money for a U47 copy by an independent builder who is great & the tube was soldered in w/no schematic. I'm an Engineer/Tech, but only about 5 guys come to mind for repairing condenser mic's. As soon as I got the Mic, COVID hit and Im re-opening my place in 3 weeks.

      Bought the cm800T n a few others and I can say the same. My cm800T is just slightly less bright than the c800G, but that’s nothing a little maag eq can’t fix if need be. Beautiful mic

    I have the CM67se. Its the Best mic I have so far. The Neumann sounds like it has more windings in the Transformer or runs on a slightly higher voltage. Would be interesting to find out if these specs are true. Call Dave and record it for a video, He will be glad to talk for hours about his mics.

    The Advanced Audio doesn’t sound bad but it also doesn’t sound like a U67. It has the same problem all the U67 clones have and that is with the high end. The Neumann has more presence and detail in the high end. It seems like a lot of the clone manufacturers are so focused on the midrange that they neglect the high end. It’s like they’re so afraid of the high end being too hyped that they cut it altogether. It sounds like there’s a roll off at around 10kHz. It’s sounds almost identical to Warm Audio’s WA-67. Not a bad microphone at all just missing that little bit of magic that makes the U67 the legend that it is.

    • @heythere6983
      @heythere6983 2 года назад +1

      I wonder if this was done on purpose to give the clone more warmth than what it has. It already sounds brighter, I wonder how much brighter it sounds up close .
      I believe I read the u67 was made to be sung closer up aswell.

  • @BJDalong
    @BJDalong 2 года назад

    the differences might acutally have a lot to do with the mic placement in the vocal part, watch closely the singer isn't really singing into the center of the these mics, and if anything the upper mic would pick up more details compared to the bottom mic from her singing angle.

  • @SingItLouder6

    Which mic do you prefer? I think because of cost I prefer the AA 67

    • @legendaryrocklive4289
      @legendaryrocklive4289 3 года назад

      The 67SE is a far more versatile mic than the vintage, because you can easily roll off high end to gain midrange focus if you want that, but it is much harder to add high frequency response that is not there without also adding artifacts. AA CM67SE is one of the top mics in Nashville, and for very good reason. They sound incredible on both male and female vocals or just about any other source (just ask legendary producer Chuck Ainley). At the relative price point, it's a no-brainer.

    • @benjamind.1539
      @benjamind.1539 2 года назад

      Have you bought the AA CM67se?

  • @EandVEntertainment
    @EandVEntertainment 2 года назад

    The CM67SE is based on a modified U67, so it doesn’t have the de-emphasis circuit. What you get is a substantially more open microphone than a U67, which could be a good thing or a bad thing. A Peluso P67 or Warm WA67 get slightly closer to the real U67 sound. Still, Neumann’s capsules really do sound better than most of the knock offs, providing great detail without harshness, but even a reissue used will run you $6,000 if you’re lucky.
    I wish the singer was a touch closer. U67s were designed for close singing and the sweet spot is right in front. Once you pull away more than 12” they can lose some of the midrange that makes them special.
