I've just discovered these, after hearing Dr. Z talking about stocking his Tweed style amps with them. Amazing, and I love the prices! These are probably going to replace my 12ax7's in my Fender circuit conversion/build, BF bandmaster to blonde bassman.
One of my favorite amps I ever built was a 50w Plexi circuit with just an EF86 and a phase inverter. Tone control and presence… that’s it. Super punchy!
I have an EF86 preamp connected to my standard Vox AC30 with Alnico blues. This is mainly to reproduce the sound and tone of the lead guitar on early UK Shadows instrumentals in the early 60s with my 62 Stratocaster. The preamp has an original NOS Mullard EF86 in the preamp. Clean tones are a world part between the EF86 and the 12 AX7/ECC83. The EF86 has a much more creamy and controlled treble. The ECC83 is a harsher and more clipped trebly tone, not as pleasing to the ear. It is a bit more difficult to tell the difference with the slightly overdriven tones you are demonstrating but thank you for demonstrating the differences.
When Rose Morris profile came i was like: "Wow, I have new worship amp, it sounds amazing".. When I heared and tried new cub amp, I just simply changed my mind because it sounds even better than Rose morris! Thanks guys.. :)
Proves EF86's can be quiet in guitar amps, it just take knowledge to implement it properly and choosing right tube which is normally cheaper than most expensive NOS. Biasing it for gain of 200 doesn't work well.

EF184 ( 6EJ7 ) also works great as a preamp tube .I had great results using that tube and the tubes can be found for pennies on a dollar .
