I had a serious accident last year, and lost most of the use of the use of my left hand; I will never pick up a guitar ever again - I have been playing almost 15 years. Steve is and always be my favourite player. His music got me through the early months of my new disability, and losing my career too. Thanks, Steve
Sometimes guitar playing can feel competitive and the 'musical' aspect gets a bit forgotten. Steve is the exact opposite of that, such a beautiful player.
So many guitarists seem to believe that the only measure of how ‘good’ they are is how fast they can play. Chill out guys, it’s music not an arms race!
Steve Rothery is a vastly Underrated Guitarist 🎸. His playing defines the Sound of Marillion. His guitar playing and the effects that he uses, make Marillion a Unique Band.
I don't know what rock I've been under, but SO glad you Gents introduced me to Steve and Marillion! Really enjoyed this episode and Steve has a new fan.
Thank you for doing this. Steve Rothery has been one of my biggest influences since I discovered Marillion during the Marbles album, and then subsequently listened to their back catalog. Describing their longer songs as chapters put together is an eloquent way of putting it, I always felt a song like Ocean Cloud was a collection of movements. And songs like The Great Escape have brought me to tears many times. Truly a remarkable band and amazing guitarist, and I respect them for their approach to music.
The first concert I saw was Marillion at Liverpool's royal court at the tender age of 14, I'll never forget it, this was the time when they rolled out some of the Misplaced Childhood songs before they were released. I'm a lifelong fan, thank you Steve, for your moving and soulful guitar style...
Steve rothery is so underated as a guitarist.the man can move you to tears with his solos. Glad you invited him on your show guys.interesting watch.thankyou.😊
Along with Alex Lifeson and Andy Summers, Steve Rothery has been such a guitar inspiration to me since I was a kid, and especially since I first bought Misplaced Childhood in 1986. His clean, chorused arpeggios made me want to master that style of playing. And I think I nearly have done! Thanks to Steve for decades of brilliance!
Marillion brings together my favorite bass player and guitar player in one band. The chemistry in Marillion is magical. I have loved this band my whole life.
Seasons End is such an important album for me. The songs are wonderful but are elevated by the tone and feel and musicality of this man’s playing. Hooks in You has a hall of fame riff and there ate magical solos and flourishes across the whole album, for example I still get chills from some of the parts Steve plays on The Space. Thank you for such a precious gift, Steve.
I love that comment, "ah you should have Steve (Hackett) up here, I'll mention it to him!" awesome. This is a pure guitar tech goldmine and some soulful playing to boot
Killer show!!! A player that plays to serve the tune not his ego. music with substance that you can listen to over and over and hear something new you missed all the listens before.
Such a legend and inspiration! Steve Rothery plays every note like his life depended on it and there’s never a wasted note. Such emotion in his playing! Thank you for this!
Ah "Sugar Mice" right at the start. This guy deserves so much more recognition than he gets. Awesome guitarist. Caught both "Clutching At Straws" and "Season's End" tours.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any better than your Johnny Marr video you pull this out of the bag. Absolutely brilliant. Steve Rothery is the sweetest of guys and a musical genius. Loved every second.
Steve Rothery is one of the few true masters of the guitar! I’ve probably listened to his solo in Incubus a thousand times and it still gives me shivers down the spine…… Amazing player 🙏
Awesome video guys! I've been waiting all my life for an interview like this. Marillion has been part of my life soundtrack and Steve one of my guitar heroes and influences for the past 30 years❤❤❤❤❤🤟👏👏👏

Great interview. I watched Steve play with Fish-era Marillion, way back in ‘83 and ‘84, they were a great live band. Seeing this, 4 decades on makes me fully realise what a guitar inspiration he was to me in my early days: the clean arpeggios and those soaring leads! Lovely player.
The sun is shining, it's warm, the sounds of Steve Rothery are drifting through my living room. I'm transported 😂 Thanks for having Steve on. Can't wait for more.
Spent my Friday evening in the backyard with my Strat, a slide, & a Boss headphone set, enjoying the beautiful weather, the flowers & a few cold pints. What a fantastic way to close out a fulfilling night, but with two of my favourite Gents having a superlative conversation with Steve Rothery. Wow!!! Thanks Gents!!
At the Zénith de Paris 1985, in full majestic solo, the plate of his Strato reflected a light, pierced the ceiling of the room to pick a star and illuminate all the hearts united as one in a weightless dream... and sometimes tears at the turns of a phrasing whose economy of note makes all the power.. brilliant this Mr. Steve! The most fantastic guitarist after my 50 years of experience with this instrument.. Eternal respect and happiness in his life..
Ooof my ultimate guitar hero. I was about 15 or 16 when seeing marillion at the Hammersmith odeon. Steve you are the reason I picked up the guitar at that tender age! I am still in awe.
The underrated guitar player. The humble man. The master of expression! The guitar solo of Easter is the most expresive that I've ever heard, it realy tells us a history! Long life to the great master Steve!
My first dive into the MIJ Squiers was when I had to replace my 95 MIM that was stolen. I found an 87 E-series 57 Style but with the Floyd rose type system for the bridge and nut. I decided to work it into a true 57 style with the six point bridge, new electronics, etc., so I dove in and did a lot of work to get it right. When it was finally set up, my mind was blown! The easiest guitar I ever played, hands down. The neck, however, was significantly played and therefore worn and definitely in need of fret replacement soon. While talking to luthiers about it, I was also looking for replacement necks. Very soon, I found an 86 E series neck that was complete 57 spec and barely played! I now have an 86/87 hybrid that, like Steve’s, is heavily modified but, like he says, it’s the wood. These guitars are every bit as good as any top line strat style guitars I’ve ever played. They sing even without amplification. It’s been a very worthwhile project and partner. Get one if you can. Love this show!
Steve Rothery is in a class of his own. I was lucky enough to see Marillion twice - best concerts of my life. Wish I can see them again. Thank you so much, guys. One of my top favorite bands.
I'm a big fan of Marillion and love Steve Rothery's work. He is my biggest influence and continues to surprise me emotionally over the years. Long live to Marillion!
Well what can you say about Steve Rothery, as when I hear him soloing tears come dropping. He is the greatest for me, and the one who has this deep beautiful touch no one else has.
Steve is my absolute favourite guitar player. Slightly further down my list there's Gilmour and Lattimer, their influence on Steve is unmistakable. Thank you guys so much for getting Steve on! ❤
Loved this. Was introduced to the "Hogarth" era Marillion about 5 years ago by a good friend of mine and have become a huge fan of the band. A great live band too.
A fan and guitarplayer for 30 years over here. Thanks for giving this gem of a present on Friday. Fell in the Misplaced Childhood album at the age of 12 when being in difficult times in my own childhood, that band got me through a lot of tough situations. Their storytelling let me escape and I could drift away on the notes flavoured by that reverb, chorus etc. These are “just” pedals and sounds, but for me much more; the sound of stories, fantasy and freedom. Now Steve tells he sought after the sound in his head; LP and Marshall. He put his own sound in my head, I now and then trying to create on my own set up at home and in band settings So thankfull for that. Keep going this great show guys.
I've got a "few" years on you and have often felt that Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws were practically autobiographical for me - bad breakups, drug & alcohol abuse, dealing with childhood abuse, feeling existentially lost, etc.
Finally got round to watching this . What a privilege. I’ve loved Steve’s work right from the very beginning. World class player and for this forum, a world class tap dancer! Thanks for this TPS.
Great episode!! As a huge Marillion fan and Steve being an influence, it's great to see him on the show.invite him back and have him bring the double neck Steinberger!!
I really hoped for some words on Andy Latimer. And I wasn't disappointed :) His playing has some of the most fluid phrasing among guitar players. I strongly recommend everyone pick up albums like Nude, Stationary Traveller, Moonmadness, or Dust & Dreams-amazing work.
Absolutely, Andy is one of the best ever. I hope he gets well again, and it would be unbelievable to see him interviewed here. Rothery is an all-time master as well - very glad they had him on. 👌
So cool to see an awesome guitar great like Steve R. on this show. I discovered him back in 83 and have followed Marillion to this day. I've always marveled at his talent and his tones. They are both epic! Chasing the Marillion sound has been a never ending task for me and many other fans. You could do a whole show on his use of reverb too. Thanks for making this happen. Keep up the excellent content. Much appreciated guys!
Honestly, this guy is amazing. I’ve been a massive fan since the early 80’s. His playing is the definition of serving the song and leaving ego outside. He is so talented and makes every note count. Thank you for getting Steve on the show. A beautiful and humble and ridiculously talented man. My top 4 favourite guitarists including Marr and Rothery. Please get the other two, Gilmour and Knopfler
Fantastic interview Gents! Rothers is such a tremendous talent as are all the fellas in Marillion! I think I'm on my 7th Marillion weekend! They just keep getting better and better! Thank you again! Brent, VT
What a great show. Such a quietly confident, well spoken guy too. It’s clear in his voice the passion he has for melody. And some of that 80’s gear he was talking about regarding racks etc… they really were the sound of the 80s. When people ask me of the chorus sound .. I think of him. Kudos! Would love to see a part 2 with the fridge gear 😊
Three absolute Leg-ends! This is a major coup Mick and Dan - getting Rothers onto the show is an epic achievement! One of my favourite players of all time, and a huge influence on prog and post-prog, math rock, and anything a bit tricky. What a treat!
Love that Pedal Show. What a great player. A real understanding of the sound and what’s needed for the part. I need to listen to some Marillion this weekend.
Bumped into Steve just the other week in Berkeley 2 rehearsals studios in Glasgow, He was gracious and lovely ..One of my three favourite guitar players and a huge influence ! Great Interview chaps 👌👍👍
This guy has been my guitar teacher since I was 15.I’ve spento so much time learning how to play guitar from my beloved Marillion records!Steve Rothery has such a amazing style!
Oh God, what a joy ! Clutching At Straws was my first ever CD, back in the late 80s, it remains one of my absolute favorites, and the Sugar Mice intro (well, pretty much everything from the Fish era) is one of the main reasons I became a guitar player (and did it for a living)... Such an amazing player, distinctive tone and unbelievable phrasing, up there with Dave Gilmour in my book. Thank you so so much for this !!!!
This is why the mid 80's MIJ '57 and '67 Reissue Fender Stratocasters are such great guitars. Many of them were built in the same factory using same or better quality materials than those used on the Squiers. And indeed, Fender Stratocaster through a chorus pedal into a Roland JC-120 (or just using the JC-120 stereo chorus) is one of the classic sounds of all. And few Stratocasters look better than all black with a solid maple neck and silver chrome hardware. Beautiful !!!
What an absolute legend. One of the most expressive players ever to grace a guitar. He has the ability to create the most sublime music that invokes so much emotion. When coupled with the sonic magic of Marillion, it’s unsurpassed. For anyone in any doubt just give the latest album a listen. It’s a masterpiece. If you are not moved by ‘Care’ then you’re dead inside..!!
What a treat! Steve is easily one of the most underrated talents in the history or Rock music. Spectacular player and songwriter. Marillion is for me a top 25 band in the history of rock = and nobody else on my personal list is creating great music presently. I have been enjoying Steve's playing for about 40 years. Thank you for this Gentlemen!
Well, that was an absolute joy. I have been very fortunate to have seen Marillion many times through the years. The solo gigs for Ghosts of Pripyat were fantastic also. Anybody who hasn't discovered this music so far, what a treat awaits you!!
I specifically go for cheap guitars and amps, and get a glorious sound, that on about 7 earlier nearly deafened me (gotta remember earplugs when turning up with this beastie, just found a short to ground and got her working last night). If I bring 2 cabs to the gig I'm pushing 300 watts, nobody needs that much noise, lol. You guys have hella good ears, so you might detect something in my tone that you found distasteful I suppose, but after 50 years of playing if there's anything there, I'm not hearing it. 300 million albums with a less than 200 quid guitar speaks volumes, and thanks for inviting Steve, great show as always.
The man himself. Underrated. Under the radar. Supremely gifted.
I had a serious accident last year, and lost most of the use of the use of my left hand; I will never pick up a guitar ever again - I have been playing almost 15 years. Sorry to hear about the accident and the effect it’s had on your playing. Sending you the very best of wishes for adapting to what comes next. Cheers!
Oh man :( that's heartbreaking
Steve Rothery, the reason I first picked up a guitar 37 years ago. Thanks so much for this one, guys. Such a melodic, lyrical player ❤
Steve is the sound of my childhood, early teens. The Brave album is still one of my favourite guitar albums. 🎉
I love that there’s still a place in music for tasteful guitar playing that serves the song.
One of my absolute favorite guitar players. Textbook feel over technique. Every note just hits ❤
Sometimes guitar playing can feel competitive and the 'musical' aspect gets a bit forgotten. Steve is the exact opposite of that, such a beautiful player.
Yes - I've never really understood this - music is collaborative - it isn't a competitive sport - it's an art.
Nobody can play exactly like you.
Having five virtuosos in the band, none of whom overplay is very rare. A band where evem the lead singer is a world class session keyboard player!
So many guitarists seem to believe that the only measure of how ‘good’ they are is how fast they can play. Chill out guys, it’s music not an arms race!

Legend. One of the players that have informed every note that I have played on a guitar.
Three absolute Leg-ends! This is a major coup Mick and Dan - getting Rothers onto the show is an epic achievement! One of my favourite players of all time, and a huge influence on prog and post-prog, math rock, and anything a bit tricky. What a treat!
Big love and respect to Mr Rothery! One of my all time favourite guitarists. Clutching at Straws tour, Newcastle City Hall was an amazing gig
I was there too! Amazing gig.
As a huge fan of Marillion, especially the Fish years and the first four albums with Steve H. This was a very special episode. Thank you so much.
I've always been jealous of that "clean" sound but have never got near it. Such a lyrical lead player too.
Cool pick guys, completely forgot about Steve but was a huge fan from 1985 to 1990 or so
Awesome show guys, Steve's sound and feel on the guitar has been a huge influence on my playing over the years.
Thank you so much for getting Steve in - he is the main reason I picked up a guitar in the 80's, and such a nice guy!
