For travel in Canon my holy trinity is f/2.8 L but for Sony I do have smaller 16-25/2.8 and 24-50/2.8 but also 70-200/4 and 24-105/4. Also have the RF 50/1.2, 85/1.2, and 135/1.8 so you’ve convinced me that kit is not built for travel. Nice thinking. Will have to decide if I should swap in the 14-35/4 L and 70-200/4 L lenses and restructure my kit Thank you and take care.

I would bring the RF 16mm, 28mm, 50mm stm, 24-105mm and the 100-400 for intimate weight savings and enjoying your trip with whom ever your going with. If I am going alone with the focus on street and landscapes I would also bring the 14-35mm and the 70-200 f4 and leave the RF 100-400mm home unless I am doing wildlife photography. 😊

Excellent video. The Nikon equivalents for travel are very close to Canon. For travel I only ever take two lenses... a 24-120mm f4 as my primary lens and a 14-30mm f4 for more street and interior shots. Both are lightweight versatile lenses that are of excellent quality and don't break the bank.
For travel light weight versatility is king. You are usually stuck behind fences and unable to pick and choose where you stand when taking a photo, so being able to frame images with the zoom is key.
You are usually shooting landmarks and scenes so wider angles are usually required with the odd zoom in for people and detail shots.

Nice! sounds like we're on the same page. Glad to hear someone confirm that the Nikon options are similar. Thanks for watching!

It all depends on where you are going and what you are shooting. Last time in Japan I had a 24-240mm, a 16-35mm F2.8 and a 35mm F1.8 with 2 bodies. It worked pretty well. Honestly I think people don't appreciate a 24-240 as much as they should. It really gives you the true flexibility to not miss a moment (great glass is only great when you have the right lens attached). How big you need to blow it up anyways (my OG A7 with 24-240 - I printed to 20x30"). I really think the trick for travel is getting from wide all the way to tele in a whole kit, and then choosing a prime that you are going to use in the evening, ideally close focusing for detail shots. Personally I like 28 or 35mm for the prime, and it's nice to have that focal length covered in all lenses (because you start to see in that focal length).

having one lens with that range (like 24-240) combined with a single prime with wide aperture is definitely another approach you can take

@@cafeandpassportsHi Chris. Thanks for sharing your input. Much appreciated.
I’m inclined on taking the 14-35mm regardless as I think I will have many possible shots close to large and wide buildings (like the Parthenon). So, the question is which longer zoom I should take.
Did you wish you had a longer focal length than 70mm during your Japan trip? In my case, I think I may need the extra reach given the landscape in Greece, especially in the islands. So I am inclined to go with the 24-105mm. Combined with the 14-35mm, they weigh less than 3 lbs ( 2.94 to be precise). If I take the 24-70 like you did, however, it adds about half a pound (3.41 lbs). Not much.
      Again, thanks for your feedback.

Very good points made and well done Chris! channel subscribed.
I just spent a week in Nayoga and 80% of the time I used the 85mm F2, while the rest 16mm F2.8

Thanks for the sub! An 85 and a 16 is a cool package

Thanks for making this video! Total photo noob here, also going to Japan next month and have been trying to figure out if the lenses I currently have (Sigma 16mm and 30mm) will get the job done for city and countryside exploration. I appreciate the breakdowns and things to consider!

Hi Chris... excellent process and overview. Love the way it was segmented and the thorough process around it. Which lenses you ended up brining to Japan?
Like you I have a big trip coming up (2 weeks in Greece) and I have all of the 4 lenses you have on the "checks all boxes" category. But I want to bring only 2. Given Greece has a lot of monuments, architecture, mountains, beaches, etc., I am debating which two I should bring:
    14-35mm F4 + 24-105mm F4, or
    24-70mm F2.8 + 70-200mm F4
Not intending to bring any throw-ins though. Just want to be light weight, versatile and minimalistic but covering all the scenarios typical of a vacation trip to a place that has so much history. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Hi! Thanks for watching! I ended up bringing the 14-35 f/4 and the 70-200 f/4. The 70-200 is my favorite lens and i kept that one on about 85% of the time for both street photos as well as distant landmarks/landscapes like when i went to see Mt Fuji, and i was glad to have the 14-35 to swap to whenever i saw a particular shot i wanted, especially indoors in tight spaces or with a big landscape scene i wanted. I guess i would recommend thinking about what kind of shots you want to prioritize and what situations you envision yourself in. I think those two lenses personally gave me the best coverage of what i was looking for. Hope that helps! But dont worry too much, you cant go wrong with either combo youre thinking of. But im biased towards having the 70-200 as an option =]
