New Catch Basin Changes Yard Drainage as we know it making all Catch Basins before it Obsolete

  • Let's talk about our new catch basin and how we got to this point. After 35 years in the drainage industry, we've seen what works and what doesn't. We experience the common struggles as a contractor first hand. And one struggle we had, was finding a catch basin that was easy to install and that kept the drain from clogging.
    So we started with a 12 in. square basin that was supposed to be the mack daddy of catch basins. No doubt, it's always caught more shingle gravel than any other basin. But we also know you need to dig a really big hole to put this in. Plus I question the size of the sump and it's ability to hold debris. Also, in Michigan, this catch basin freezes solid so you can never leach all the water into the subsoil. It's a real problem for drainage contractors and homeowners.
    So then we tried a smaller 9 x 9 basin because it's so easy to install. But there was no sump whatsoever to catch the sediment and debris. Also, it has less of a gap to shoot water through, so you don't catch as much gravel. We still needed a gutter catch basin that was easy to install and that kept debris out of the drain line. Contractors that are doing this for a living know exactly what we're talking about.

    Cool product! Can we connect to PVC fitting instead of multiple 1.5"-3" fittings?
    Would using a deep 4" cross capped at the bottom work?

    I really like this design! I have one downspout that needs to be connected into my existing system and this looks like exactly what I need to get. With it able to be closer to the surface, I think it’ll be easier to have the slope correct right from the get go.

      @@FRENCHDRAINMAN I was measuring today. It’s 20’ from the downspout to add it to my existing drain system. Already have the connection spot waiting for this line to arrive. I had a tree squash my gates, and since there’s a pool back there, I gotta get the gates back up asap, then that downspout is getting addressed.

    is a pop up required on the end of the pipe or could I just cut it on a 45deg with a sawzall and let it flow?

    • @FRENCHDRAINMAN
      @FRENCHDRAINMAN  9 месяцев назад +5

      No. You can do what you are suggesting as long as the grass doesn't grow over the outlet

    • @jmackinjersey1
      @jmackinjersey1 8 месяцев назад

      The only thing about an open end is either grass growing over and into the open end or dirt/debris clogging it or even critters moving in during the dry season. More importantly, it becomes a trip Hazzard, and a hole can be an ankle breaker if it is a straight down situation. But if it is coming out of the side of a slope, then as long as there is some rocks around it to give warning and location, then that is, we'll, a warning of the location.

    Just curious, what are the problems with recycled plastic in basins? Do they deteriorate faster?

    • @FRENCHDRAINMAN
      @FRENCHDRAINMAN  8 месяцев назад +2

      When molding a basin the material needs to flow as one for best results so it doesn't split or crack. When using recycled materials you need special additives to hold the recycled materials together. It's definitely one of the most debated topics in the industry weather or not it's as strong as virgin non recycled HDPE. Some say with the right additives it's fine. I'm not a subscriber to that theory.

    So does the size of the grate not really matter? I'm about to put in a huge order, but I have a 2 foot wide river from houses up the street. I figured a 20" catch basin at the start of it would help catch more of it.

    • @FRENCHDRAINMAN

      We run double solid 4" pipes off a catch basin that size. So that being said, that will work as long as you run (2) 4" pipes off of it.
