What's the best way to install catch basins?

- This customer had already waterproofed his basement foundation with a waterproofing spray, french drains, and gutter downspout piping. Unfortunately, the installers used that black slinky pipe called corrugated pipe. This pipe is inferior in every way (but it's cheap and easy to install). After several years the flow had dropped and the system was no longer carrying water away, which caused flooding in his basement. We installed a few catch basins to collect surface water off the hill and caught several gutters to carry water away. We only use solid schedule 40 (not thin-wall) PVC and glue all joints together. I also talk a little about the hydrology of installing catch basins and proper techniques.

Bob, same here. I just did a project connecting one existing system to another - the first system's existing outfall was in a location I could no longer use - and because the beginning and ending points were already established, I could only fall 10.5" over 74 feet, about 1/8 bubble, just over 1%. I can't wait to see how it flows in a downpour.
@@DaddyBeanDaddyBean Around here some of the land has 0 inches of soil above the water-table so I prefer to install 6 inch or larger b/c it can have .5% slope & still be self cleaning. The problem I'm finding now is that if the pipe isn't below the natural compaction layer then large trees can send roots under the pipe & lift it.
@@SlackerU I’ve heard of sand bedding under the pipes that allows the tree roots to grow without lifting pipes. But I’ve never seen it or read any case studies proving it works.
@@alanostner I'm having to move a 6-inch pipe b/c a white-oak has roots lifting it. I originally cut some large roots but when doing it I felt it'd fail. I wish I could install it under the roots but I don't have the elevation so I'm moving it a few feet over. In my citizen-science we're basically forced to install below the compaction-layer b/c on the compaction-layer is where the tree-roots travel. My French-Drain with bottom-holes has small tree feeder-roots all the way down it, they don't lift it but they're there.

I have a home in the country in Upstate NY...rural area with no sewers but natural drainage ditches ...I have a basement sump pump system...But on the south side of my house is a farmers field that has a low spot and water settles and backs up into my rear yard...They're is a existing field drain pit with lines coming in and are buried about 3'. Everything was draining at front of my property...But over the past few years when public water lines were installed they disturbed the pipes and now I believe it's causing backyard field drain pit to back up...I have 2 gutter downspouts and sump pump tied into existing system...So most videos deal with slab footer drainage...But your video kinda shows what I want to do...remove surface water and connect gutters and sump pump to a system similar to this project... Question??? Why did you go with solid verses pipe with holes ( French Drain Lines) and only use catch basins? Wouldn't French Drain Lines ( Solid with holes ) along sides of house be added benefit besides catch basins? Thank You ✨👍 ( I don't want to mess with existing lines as they are deep...But would like to do a similar system as you did....I have no problem with standing water in front or sides...Just the rear ..About 20'-25' behind the house I would like to install shallow system like yours and then level low settled areas with catch basins... Should I run solid pipe between basins ...Or could I use solid with holes between basins and then solid to exit like your system?

When installing yard drains like this how deep to you cut your trench and does the frost line matter? I really like the idea of only having a few catch basins vs the gravel filled french drain systems. I appreciate the professional insight!
You want the pipes deep enough so you maintain fall. We don't have a frost line here so it depends on your soil type and how much the subsoils move.

@@bpdp379 Yep he is just doing it the easy way low bid plus they have sandy soil down there too but in the end BIG BOX pipe does not last very long .
Love your channel! Question: Do you ever install drainage system around pools? We want a pool but concerned about drainage in the area.
Yes we do. You’ll want to find water sources around the pool and get those contained. Also set in a channel drain and not one of those micro ones.
Curious if the corrugated pipe that failed was perforated or not? Did it collapse or just release previously collected water back into the soil?
Any thoughts about installing a basin right after the downspout goes underground on each downspout? So run the downspout underground, into the basin from the side, then run the actual drain out the opposing side. Just trying to kep the pipe as clean as possible.
How much could a project like this range from?
If I use schedule 40 pvc, how would I connect to the 3x4 gutter adapter to the 4" schedule 40. In all the stores I look in, the gutter adapters are in the schedule sdr 35 sewer drain size and not schedule 40.
I just insert the gutter into a coupler.
How do you clean out the sump of the catch basin when its full of stone?
Someone suggested filling a catch basin with cheap paver bricks, up to the bottom of the outlet pipe - the basin will fill with water faster, and start draining faster, and bricks vs gravel for ease of cleaning.
I thought about drilling weep holes in the bottom of my catch basins, but worried about it eroding underneath or something. Guess that's silly. What do you drill, 1/4" holes? 1/2"?
I think you're good either way. We drill something like 3/16" holes but it's not critical the size.

What type of PVC do you use? Local irrigation supply store said Schedule 40 is overkill and recommended that I use SDR-35 instead since it's better than D2729. What is your opinion on this? I do not live in area that rains a lot or freezes.
Curious if any of the RUclipsrs can help select a pipe. Here in my area Schedule 40 is $7 per linear feet vs $4 for sdr and $2.50 for d2729. It would be super helpful if anyone had any guidance here so I know what to ask for. Thank you so much 🙏
@@doffazz Schedule 40 will stand up against tree roots the best if sealed properly. Once a pipe cracks roots will grow into it, eventually clogging it or breaking it altogether.
Are the pipes near where large tree roots can reach it?
I see now they make those square catch basins were you can adjust the height of the hole by removing tabs, then sliding it in the brackets, which avoids covering and drilling another hole.
The problem is it's dead space between the bracket and the top. We just did a catch basin like that and I had to cut it anyway because we had such little fall to work with.
Can anyone (at all) please tell me whether Shawn usually uses Schedule 40 4 inch or 5 inch pipe? It is hard to see from the video. Anyone? What about for French drains, the same?
I use schedule 40 4" pvc for almost everything. I occasionally use 6" PVC and use 1.5" for pumps.
Do I want to put anything on the outlet pipe to prevent bugs or critters from crawling up pipe?
If you use a white pipe they are usually too bright inside to attract critters. The smooth wall also doesn't let them pack any debris or build a nest. This is because the pipes flows so well that water blows out that debris.

All these RUclips videos on underground downspouts never seem to run into nasty roots when digging. Just nice easy soil. I run into pain in the arse roots whenever I try to dig. It’s not fair😖
We hit roots all the time. Check out my latest video where we had to chop tons of small roots out for a sump pump line.
Oh good. I thought I was just cursed. Thanks for responding. Here in Georgia we have Bradford pear trees with a root system from he||. Went through about 10 sawzall blades to get a tree stump out which was planted right over a sewer line and right in the middle of two underground downspout lines. Who plants a tree in a spot like that? Stupid developers. Nobody should ever plant a tree that close to the house. If you ever have a job near a Bradford pear tree you will encounter roots from he||. Those trees are demon trees.
Would you still drill weep holes in the basin if it's going under a gutter right next to your foundation
Downspouts get connected directly into a pipe. If a catch basin is needed, it would be set away from the house and the ground would be pitched away from the house.
That outfit that did the foundation waterproofing should have dealt with the surface rain water better. Package problem requires package solution. Really too bad for the homeowner. Great system GCFD!!
They may not have been hired for that. These jobs are not cheap, and so often homeowners will not spend on a "total solution" even if it is discussed.

@@hungvu8480 It would still flow without them. Its not a closed system like you have in your house. The gutter outlet on the roof would basically act as your vent.

What’s the point of the catch basin if it has to fill up to drain? Does the water just sit at the bottom?
During a rain the basin will fill up and then start flowing out of the pipe. There are holes in the bottom so the residual water eventually drains out of the basin.
Catch Basin is a collection point for bigger objects other than the water, like leaves, etc. Otherwise, no catch basin means bigger chance of clogging your entire sewer pipe
Catch Basin literally means to Catch, so there is a manhole or cover which you need to open and regularly collect the big Dirt and throw out.
Word of advice anything that falls inside the catch basin make sure you empty it out so it stays clean

So, driving on this lawn at a later date, with shallow drain pvc is out of the question?

If you have corrugated or thinwall PVC (schedule 30) I would not recommend driving over your system. In this case that's exactly what happened to collapse the previous existing system. Once collapsed, no amount of snaking or cleaning can make the system flow again.
This system is 4" schedule 40 PVC, the same pipe that is used for the main sewer line from the house to the city sewer. It's more than strong enough to hold up to being driven over, regardless of how deep it's buried. I can drive my excavator over a piece of this pipe on pavement and it won't break - which is why I recommend using the highest quality pipe on these systems.
I would wait a little while and let the disturbance settle down before driving over the system because the pipes are all positioned to have good fall. The catch basins are also rated for 1000 lbs, but again, I wouldn't really want to park a vehicle on them.

do you really need excavator for this?
You can easily dig these by hand. Some jobs I bring the ex and some we did by hand. I guess it just depends on how big the job is.

Hahah that homeowner had already spent 10 grand on waterproofing that did nothing. He was very attentive to what we were doing to the point where one of my guys handed him a level so he could check everything and stay out of the way. This was an early project of mine and I gave it away, cost wise!!!!!
I don't get it...What's the point of putting catch basin if the drain is at the bottom ? All the sedimentation running in the pipes is just gonna keep running through .. The purpose of a catch basin is to trap the sand and junk at the bottom of the catch basin and the drain suppose to be at the top and drain the over flow.. But you're suppose to clean regularly the bottom of the CB... Open one (CB) on the city street and look inside..! The way it's been done in this video , might as just put a long bend pipe and forget the CB.
