- We're going to talk about Downspout Drainage Dos & Don'ts for 2024. We're going to show you how to drain an underground buried downspout system away from the home. We're also going under a sidewalk and removing some tree roots.
If you want to protect your home from water damage you have to get your roof runoff system underground. I'm going to answer all the most frequently asked questions about underground buried downspout systems. First, everybody wants to know how far away should we run our downspout system away from the home? Keep in mind you can have capillary action up to 20 feet away. What that means if you discharge the water, say 15 feet away, the soil that's in your yard is going to wick that water.

Very educational tutorial.. Thank you. We have underground french drains. We are now getting new gutters and spouts.. The mechanism that you use to connect the spouting and tubing seems elaborate. What is it called and where can we buy them? We are going from 2 by 3 inch to 3 by 4 inch down spouts and the cortex tubing has a simple horizontal flap that the downspout fits into....we cannot find them anywhere so we cant go forward with our project until we find the 3by4 "flaps" . Are they available anywhere too? thanks for you response as we really do need help.

Looks like a great catch basin. I have a question; At about the 3:43 point in the video, isn’t the pop-up emitter installed “backwards”? Should it be rotated 180 degrees? Maybe I am wrong; isn’t the notch by the pop-up the hinge point? If so wouldn’t the way it’s installed direct the water more toward the house?
That's the catch basin top. It has a solid plug in the middle of the plate.
Great videos! I'm curious about the gutters themselves. Is it safe to assume all the debris will make it to the downspout? Mine have a tendency to accumulate a little bit of debris in the gutter at the downspout which can eventually lead to very slow drainage. It's usually because of a stick or two.

thanks for this. I live in the north, why do you recommend the inline vent oppose to the solid. wouldn't the vent get covered and freeze over as well ? or does this need to be brushed and wiped off all winter? im running your downspout adapter underground but its going under a patio walk way (not installed yet) is it okay to put the inline vent 15 feet away? or is the adapter cleanout vent enough?
Downspout clean out vent is enough. The bottom line is a Downspout with no underground attached freezes up in the winter. The only way to avoid it is with heat cable. To do that right is very expensive.
We ship the in line catch basin in the kits with a solid cover for health reasons because Mosquitoes can breed in that large of a catch basin.
in a cold climate where it’s definitely gonna freeze, can i put some hardware cloth/bug screen in the vent area of the downspout clean out leaf filter? in its stock form, the vent openings look like the perfect size for wasps to create a hive in there. thanks! my FDM video binge continues…

3:44 is it best practice not to backfill the dirt here and use larger gravel at the base of the downspout? I thought your other videos mentioned best not to backfill with dirt. What is the best way forward at this section?

Do you glue or tape the risers to the catch basin?
Neither. We dry stack it. No glue, tape or tools.
I just ordered some catch basins but they don't look like that; am I getting an older model? if so, any difference? I believe from the pic the sump part went deeper
