So happy I found this page ! Just finished a diy 200ft retaining wall and French drain, getting round rock this week to finish the job. So happy I watched these videos so I don't have to replace everything in a few years ! Huge help 🙏
Robert. I enjoyed the video. You provide great information. I have a backyard that slopes away from my house towards a green belt. I have 3 down spouts out back. 1 on each side of the house and one off my back patio porch. Was planning to install this type of system within the next few weeks. My back has a severe slope and wanted to know if I would still need to install a catch basin and just use a popup at the end. Am also planning to use a y connection on 2 of my downspouts that would connect to a popup.
Here's is what I know, the shingle gravel builds up in the 90° at the bottom of the downspout. Basically it falls off the roof and gravity takes it to that point where it then sits and builds up. A catch basin installed 3 ft off the house is a good idea. We have a new one coming out next week. It holds 5 years of shingle gravel. That is what I recommend.
This channel is great! Had a quick question. Just had a sump pump installed in my crawl and a new discharge line installed in my front lawn. The contractor only buried the discharge line 18inches deep. We had a cold day here in the 20s and I noticed my pump was discharging from the frost discharge. Was this because the line froze? Should they have installed the line deeper than 18 inches, especially since frost depth in Michigan is 42 inches? Thanks!
Nice video. Thank you so much. I have a small home, not much space from the downspout to the in between home runoff area, which is rocks. Should I just put rocks and let it end under the ground? Or have a downspout in The Rocks. In between the homes, there's not much space. I'm also putting in a sidewalk, so it needs to go underneath the sidewalk. And then up, but it's almost level, not much slope.
I have a 1.5 acre property (169 x 400). The backyard does not drain well. The clay soil makes it very difficult for surface water to soak into the ground. I was thinking of running three 3️⃣ six inch solid corrugated pipe with catch basins spaced 20’ apart. The separate three lines (East - West) would connect to a perpendicular output line. The output line is very long. I was thinking of using .8” slope. 100’ would have 12” of downgrade. I could have intermediate catch basins to manage the downgrade. I could also add a sump pump as well. Please give me your feedback on the proposed project.
Would this type of setup work in MN with a sump pump discharge? I don’t have a good spot to daylight to and keep the correct grade. Otherwise I’m looking at contracting someone to burrow under our driveway and tie into our storm drain. Thanks for the help!
A flooded basement is something I don't wish on anyone. We had a 100-year rain during a power outage when we were up North in 2009. When you have a roll-off dumpster in front of your house and you're throwing all your belongings away, you don't have any problem paying a contractor to go under a driveway.

How far from a shrub or small tree do you try to put the inline catch basin? Will the roots still go after it if you drill holes in the bottom and it drains after a rain event?

I would tape ever connection on a wooded lot. If the tree trunks are near the line don't run any knife cut. Solid pipe all the way to the pop-up emitter.

Tropical storms are sometimes measured in feet and not inches. A full 3 inch System can be done. You will need minimum of 3 discharge lines for 8 downspouts. If you put 2 on each 3 inch discharge line to the street it would be a total of 4 discharge lines to the street. Sometimes there is a gutter that is not responsible for much roof top water that's why I mentioned 3 per main line can be done. Walk outside during a downpour with a Umbrella.......seriously this is the only way you will know the volume of water each is responsible for. Divide it up so you don't have 2 downspouts with EXTRA HEAVY volumes of water on the same line.

It was a hole in my yard when U had the modular house placed on the lot .I have 6 incvh gutters since the house is 100 feet long and 32 feet wide with a basement . The basement is dry and I want to keep it that way . My front yard to the road is 400 ft and has a 30 degree slope with a septic tank and leachfield in it also . 6 downspouts 3 at the back 3 on the front . The drainage works great but no caps on any of them , Just an elbow I have over 3 acres and only wooded lot that goes to a horse farm behind me , The horse farm slopes down from the wooded lot that is over 600 feet back from my house only a small portion belongs to me . Want kind of drain top can I use that won't fail . I also have zosia grass , It was the best grass for a slopping front yard

I don't want a french drain . Ijust want to run the water from my gutters down my sloping front yard . I need a cap at the end that does not fail everyone I have bought has failed or doesn't fit properly . Now I just have a elbow coming out at the bottom of the solid drain pipe .. It works OK but I have to be careful with my ride on mowers , I have over 3 acreas . I am replacing the corrugated pipe around my 5 thousand gallon koi pond and it is going out 40 feet to a large rock filled pit that is 100 feet long and 40 feet wide and rocks are all from my property and the rocks are are 30 feet deep .
