Tip. When draining a unit always remove the fill plug first. If it doesn't come out and you have already drained the unit you are stuck and can't move your machine.

Mechanic here, drive it ahead until the drain is on top put in 9.5 of a quart. now you can use it until you have time to mess with the other plug. You would not survive out in the country miles from a repair shop. Think outside the box..

I’ve always heard this and generally do it this way but I’ve never had one stuck before. I’d be more diligent if I knew I wasn’t the first one to remove it, meaning it could have been cross threaded or over torqued by someone else.

Ceramic brakes do not work well on larger trucks like this super duty. They cannot handle the breaking demands. That’s why a semi metallic pad is still used on these trucks.

I feel your pain regarding wet soil conditions on your road. I started a road back through my property in February to access some huge aspen trees that had fallen adjacent to my pond. I started spreading sandstone shale on the access to provide a base since limestone prices are out of sight. Then came the heavy rains in western PA as you point out. We can't get enough consecutive dry days to get back on that project. My problem is compounded as the soil is spoil piles, flattened out after the property was stripped back in the 60s. When it rains, the access road turns to soupy mud when I take the skid steer or excavator back to try to work. I too got greedy a while back and got the wheeled skid steer stuck up to the under belly. Fortunately, I was able to rescue the skid steer with the excavator.
I enjoyed the excavator maintenance topics and the subsequent helpful comments provided by other subscribers.

I have found that changing the oil in the final drives of an Excavator more frequently will pay off in the long run. As you said Mike a lot of travel moving those piles of brush is a lot of wear and tare on the drives. One more tip, when the plugs are tight and it's hard to get them loose, a brass punch and hammer, give them a wack and they will undo easily. 40 years as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic, has taught me a lot.

    • @davidmorse8432

If you want to ever put a food plot species in, do not put rye grass in. You could put rye grain or oats and that would be a good start. Clover would also be a good place to start as it will fix nitrogen into the soil and come back year after year. It just requires a few mowings a year. You'll want to spray the field with glyphosate then you can broadcast seed right onto that. I have a no-till drill I use to plant corn, radishes, rye grain, and sun flowers but you can get clover growing just broadcasting it onto soil you've sprayed.

    • @wolfpack4128

A chipper that wiil handle your brush and logs up to 15" while not inexpensive will always maintain it's value if maintained is good for your land's soil and creats a product for your customers that is in demand when accompanied with delivery. Something about chipping a log and or brush is memorizing and fun while helping your land, enviroment, and increasing sales. To me this fits in with your operation in that none of the capital equipment you have is fully utilized but demonstrates what is possible as DIY. Ray

I bought a new Corvette in 2010. Drove home from the dealership (50 miles) brand new car. The brake dust was THICK on both the front and rear pads. I actually thought something was wrong with the brakes! I immediately ordered some PowerStop pads. Problem solved! Pads make a difference.

You probably already know about this Mike, using straw for erosion control and soaking up wetlands. I haven't seen you use it yet but here in NW Washington State, we probably have more rain on average than y'all get there. Maybe that sawdust could have a purpose too? Love that you are back working heavy equipment in your field again. That movie, Civil War gave us the same feelings as you, social experiment.

Just saying that you know that there's a cover that goes between the rum and brake rotor to keep the brake dust off the rims

Hi Morgan's when you greased the swing gear. I'd never heard that term. I'm from Scotland and we call it a slew ring. The act of swinging left or right is known slewing here. Another great video glad to see Melissa in this one. Blessings 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Hi Mike, thanks for the tip on the movie "Civil War" as it will save me from going. When it comes time for brake pads on the Ford try the ceramic pads as someone mentioned. before. You will still get some dust but not near as bad as you are getting now and they don't fade during heavy braking. I've been using them on my "04 Silverado for a while now.

Ceramic pads and never put after market wheels on the truck. Brake dust washes right off if you stay on it and you do.

You want to have no break dust. This is what you need they are a little pricey ceramic break pads I have a Ranger XLT 2009 original owner and I am coming up on my third set. No dust and better breaking ❤😊
