  • The National Weather Service has warned that a heat wave is expected to hit the East Coast and Midwest, lasting through at least Friday. Around 150 million people may experience temperatures above 90°F, with more than 76 million currently under heat alerts. Areas from Iowa to Maine, including cities like Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Boston, and New York, are affected. Over 100 record highs are possible from today through Saturday, with temperatures soaring 10-25 degrees above average, reaching highs in the 90s to near 100°F.

As a paraguayan, i wish. Last year was summer all year long, 36 degrees with tons of humidity (also most people here do not have air conditioner), it was actually unbearable. Although tbh if we get actual cold here (our winters are usually 15 degrees with 3 at the lowest like two times per year), a lot of people are gonna die from hyperthermia, maybe even i will. We are completely unprepared for 0 degrees for more than like 3 days.

As a weather nerd I need to point out that dew point is the more useful metric to judge how comfortable the air feels. Dew points above 65F become uncomfortable; above 70F is tropical. The highest dew point ever recorded was 95F in Saudi Arabia, which is a heat index of 178F. I see on Weather Underground the London station recorded a high dew point of 45F this week. That would be a remarkably pleasant day in the SE USA lol.

It’s common advice in the U.S. to “try to get 20 minutes outside every day!” Walking outside is like some special and extra activity for them.

  • @Amyym

I still don't see how the "we don't have AC and the correct infrastructure" is reasoning for people in the UK not being able to handle heat. I grew up in rural Wisconsin in the 90's and was friends with people who didn't have AC in their rundown houses nor proper insulation for the heat. Our house was a popular house with friends because we had AC and they didn't. Our summers regularly get into the 90's due to extreme humidity, the air is literally thick to breathe. Part of my middle school was under construction one summer and we had no AC, the building was not built to stay cool without AC. There were no overhead fans and the windows barely opened. It was not fun but it wasn't a heat crisis. I also lived inland in southern California without AC and my second floor apartment got up to 92° inside. Sure that was dry heat but it's still sucks. The no AC argument doesn't really make sense because modern AC is still a relatively new thing. I mean my parents generation and all the older one's in America lived during a time where it was commonplace to not have AC in homes or cars. I may be ranting and bitter cus we've been experiencing 90°+ days here since summer started and my AC just broken in my car 2 weeks ago lol. I wish the base temp was only 78° and with the heat and humidity index a few degrees higher. That would be a relief for me.
