This tragedy was 99.99% preventable and the fact that it wasn’t, sends absolute chills down my spine. Those poor students they didn’t deserve that.
no, you mean maybe 100%, they were told to stay inside the dorms so they could escape themselves, the kids that disobeyed survived, the kids that listened were good kids
I hope that when the cowards that left the kids to die finally die themselves that in their afterlife they are made to drown in cold water again and again like the children that they left to die. That would be justice.
Attention: Coast Guards of The World and Concerned Leaders: I computed 30 helicopters supported coordinated with 1 life boat each (buddies), with each saving 10 pax, easily saves 300 people. Do this 2 times say 30 minutes per travel, will save 600 people, in 60 minutes. I believe the emergency was detected at 830AM. Vessel sank 11AM. Available time of 120-150 Minutes. Time is of the essence and an organised rescue technique tactic strategy is a standard for rescue operations especially for marine SOS. It is so horrifying and devastating how the lack of concern and competence killed many lives just like that. I am not even from Marine or Navy, at all. Just an ordinary concerned citizen. I believe every passenger from now on should have access to calling the Marine, Navy, AirForce and Coast Guard Hotlines.

Fun fact for those who don't know: the Titanic's captains all made a conscious decision to go down with the ship just so they could get as many passengers to safety as possible.
Not sure if that decision was specifically for passengers’ safety.

I hate the fact that the U.S Navy offered them help and they refused. This tragedy disgusts me, I literally cannot believe how a person can do such things.
The japanese did the same with flight 123.
Hubris and pride are very powerful bedfellows. There is probably more to this than that, like the government had actual knowledge of how this ship was used and regularly overloaded. It seems like they were trying to keep prying eyes out.
It’s insane how they think their pride and reputation is more important than lives. It’s so immature.
Yes! They wanted to help for that flight.
@@jaynekranc8607You mean JAL123?
This was straight up murder!! No efforts to rescue these kids, straight out LYING about the passengers!? And not even caring that they are literally drowning beneath that ship? This is so infuriating I could cry, I feel so strongly for those poor families and the innocent souls that lost their lives on the ship…this is just a disgrace and would have been so preventable….
What's even worse is that there were US and Japanese vessels nearby. Upon hearing over the radio the ferry capsized, they raced to the scene to offer help. The local government not only refused to accept aid but ordered the vessels to leave and mind their own business. Those kids could of been saved if one or both vessels said 'screw it' and forced their way in to help. Political fallout can be dealt with later but at least those kids would of been saved and able to go home alive.

As a Navy sailor one of the first things we are taught out at sea is when and how to evacuate the ship. If the ship is sinking, staying put is the same as saying you want to die.

Ten years later, and the world still mourns this loss. Tyvm for this beautiful tribute to those beautiful lives.

Important info for all people still watching - if you are ever in a sinking ship - NEVER put you life jacket on inside the ship - ALWAYS put it on when you are fully outside. In many ship sinking cases people died because they put their life jackets on while still inside. A life jacket will always push you up and if the water level gets to high you will not be able to get out of the ship because you will be unable to go under water and f.ex. swim outside the ship. Secondly ships tend to have narrow corridords, windows and doors - you will not be able to go out in a life jacket.
This is a type of a tip that can literally save your life - ALWAYS PUT YOUR LIFE JACKET ONLY WHEN YOU ARE OUTSIDE THE SHIP
Thx ! It's logical when you think about and better think about and get aware of this before the case happen !! Wasn't aware till yet , so thx !! 👍👏🙏🫂🤞🍀
It's the same for airplanes as well. During a ditching (landing on water), it is imperative that you *don't inflate* your lifejacket until *outside* of the plane, or there is a possibility that you could get trapped inside the cabin.
@@sacapuntass 👍🫂🤞🐞✌️
Very good to know. The captain musnt have known this. I know some situations wont survive impact during certain situations however only good reason to not wait to inflate would be so perhaps ur body can be retrieved or atleast thats what i would think. I think this because certain impacts force alone would kill, or frigid waters too and if no chance of survival atleast ur loved ones would have a body to bury. Thoughts?
The fact that an alive student was facing the divers and they didn't bother to save her is so sickening.

That fact that they refused the help hurts me, like why why would you let them die. It’s horrible.
The women telling her boyfriend that she cant talk, because her phone was low on charge and some students still needed to call their parents broke me. All these innocents and heroes being betrayed by the assholes in charge makes me so mad

They could’ve been 26 this year. It’s so depressing. These children deserve better and I hope they’re in a better place.
They might’ve had the chance to get married.
Maybe they would have children.
This realisation just hit me and I’m crying even more for them now especially because I’m their age and would’ve done so many of the things they did
They would have been my age that's wild
the fact that they could've been alright had the offer from the us navy was accepted.
those parents crying over their children is the most heartbreaking thing I've ever seen. They're crying and wailing is just so raw and so primal. It breaks my heart. It's horrible. This is just the most disgusting display of bureaucratic failure I've ever seen. Since when does a countries reputation outweigh the lives of hundreds of children.
I hope that every party involved who stood back and just waited for instructions on what to do. Next is, feels the most intense guilt ever. I hope they wish they perished on that boat with those children. Those actions are not things that you can just get over having the blood of 100s of children on your hands must be the heaviest guilt to walk around with every single day and they deserve it. Any sensible person would have taken action immediately if they had even an ounce of empathy in them it seriously breaks my heart and I wish there was someway to go back and save every single one of those kids on board because it is just horrible. It is tragic and it is painful to even hear about years later.
This video made me cry multiple times. I am in the US and had never heard of this until last night and then came along this video. It’s so sad.
What sad was, when that one tiny submarine full of 5 or so millionares got lost, a lot of people took action even if it was a dumb idea in the first place. But when this ship full of children was at risk, no one took responsibility, no one double-checked or triple checked on them. Captains were supposed to sink with their boat but that captain(if you can even call him that) is a coward. And the way they also gave those parents hope are just disgusting, my mom would always be paranoid if I will be home late and when we don't answer her calls, just imagine what those parents were filling during those times where their children can't answer their phone.
The boy who never got to call his parents because he was talking to the emergency services breaks my heart. He's such a hero but I'm so sad he never got to say goodbye to his loved ones. Rip to everyone who passed away.
that kid broke my heart. He had the option to call his parents but chose to speak to emergency. God bless that kid's soul❤

Yeah when she said that they didnt have any communication because most of tze crew had left i just knew that he was the only reason they still had some communication
i feel the same, it’s so sad 💔
I watched all of the news as it was happening 10 years ago - watched the videos as it streamed, watched at messages and info about phone calls to families flooded the internet. He was the first to call the authorities, but I didn't know until this video that he remained on the communications with the authorities.
Then, in the months after the tragedy, the news was about "coast guards etc were tipped off about a raid and deleted files" that were related to the Sewol ferry was all over the internet. I honestly had not realized until today - if Choi's call was so long, where is the transcript of it? If it was so long, it must have been on those deleted files. And how vile and disrespectful must that person or those persons be to wipe evidence of a boy's desperate call for help when he and his friends futilely and publicly died waiting for it. The people who deleted evidence and videos from the coast guard or marines, or whatever offices they did it from have to be ashamed of themselves, and no punishment is enough for their part in covering this tragedy.
When that student said " Mom dad don't let my little brother go on school trip " that just broke my heart. Like how was the captain so heartless
Spring day
Yup this and other reasons are the reasons I will never get on to about or a plane it is way too dangerous and it doesn't seem like the government really cares and there's not much they can do Then if they do care it's still so risky
I really just don't want to leave my house.
Call me coward if all you want but I was terrified when I first got to know about this.
And also the Itaewon tragedy.😢

seems.the Supreme leader should be jailed than put in a cage ans subnerged into dark cold water until he breaths water soaked in deasil fuel. Same with captain and the crew that fled. Why would the captain tuen the dangerous boat over to idiots that obviously didn't have a clue.. the lies is what got me. Poor children and family.. that American Navy ship and crew could have taken over and saved those poor souls.
The way the situation was mishandled, the delayed response, and the selfish captain compounded this heartbreaking tragedy. Those ruthless and heartless hinds were the reason of people’s sorrow and grief. Yet, we cannot ignore the courageous and selfless 16y.o students who were sacrificing their life jackets just to ensure their classmates’ and teachers’ safety; this act reflects the solidarity arising at times like these. They were the brave compassionate ones instead of the adults whom they’ve trusted to guarantee their safety
As a seafarer, it blows my mind how 99%-100% of lives that could've been saved were not saved because of the incompetence of the crews especially the ship's captain. The chief mate and captain didn't even did an inspection regarding the ship's stability prior to departure.
For context, I worked for a cargo ship before, and before we depart from the port, we make sure that the ship is stable, if not, we fill the ballast tanks with water depending on how much the ship is tilted. We make sure all cargoes are tied up and stable as well.
This is very a heart wrenching story to hear. The fact that they made an announcement that killed all those students, I can't even imagine how horrifying was it for those children that didn't evacuate because of that announcement..
Why do an inspection when you know the vessel has so many issues that you would rather ignore??

Knowing a lot of US military men, I cannot imagine their heart break learning that these kids weren't saved and they were so close.
Wen though I don’t know any military men I agree with you it disgusts me SO much and it hurts me to.
I've got a few cousins in the military. It would gut them.
I think smth similar happened with Japan Airlines Flight 123. They crashed into a mountain, the US had military helicopters and rescuers hovering on site ready to help, but the government was like "nah we got this bro" and the Japanese thought "yo ain't no way anybody survived that" so they launched the rescue next morning instead.
500+ people died, but there were 4 survivors.
The locals and survivors said they heard voices at the crash site all night, but in the hours that followed, they slowly disappeared...
National pride is such a stupid excuse to deny foreign aid. 😢
@@silverdandylmao Jesus that's horrible! It's the US military for Gods sakes, hands down the best military in the world, let them help! Who says no to help from marines??
My husband is active duty and I know a lot of military and veterans over the last 19 years.. it would absolutely destroy them. They’d risk their lives to save those kids. Horribly heartbreaking 🥺
“Refused to escape with cowards.” I couldn’t have said I better myself.
i remember this, a friend of mine's cousin was in the navy and at the time he was on that certain vessel. most of the workers were ready to help, like she said in the video, THEY ARE TRAINED FOR THESE THINGS! I remember him saying he felt devastated when the news came to him in the end. He felt upset about everything and so did the people who were around him. this is upsetting really because the marines would've definitely DEFINITELY saved everyone on that boat. I wish the marines would ignore their word and went in to help them.
The navy’s help was likely refused initially because it would reveal internationally exactly how unsafe, incompetent, and preventable this situation was.
Yea..
The government knew if the navy got involved there would be an extensive military investigation, that's the norm for anything where the military is involved, whereas if it was denied the government could hide it behind an incompetent internal investigation. The reason simply that investigations into the ferry company would reveal extensive corruption that went all the way up to that b-tch President daughter of a dictator Park Geun Hye.
they should have taken the help and learned from them. at least lives would be save. how frustrating
@@orange-ranger7089 Exactly. Even children would do that with that idea in mind. So fucking incompetent and stupid.
That’s my suspicion too but I feel like they could’ve swallowed their pride and made an excuse. For example, the Navy had the numbers and were closer than our coast guards so we let them help us. It would’ve looked better publicly that they saved the most people than refusing their help to save face.
The kids that managed to survive were the ones that didn’t listen and refused to just stay in their rooms and die. They went against the captains orders and went up to the top of the boat where they got rescued by civilian boats. The other kids that stayed all unfortunately died because they were failed by the adults they had been taught to trust and save them. That’s why it’s important to teach children to think for themselves, it can be life or death. May they rest in peace.
Well said!!!👐🙌👏
The thing that frustrates me here is that in a normal rescue that follows proper protocol, it is actually best to stay in the room you’re expected to be in. Because it can impede staff and rescue efforts to have a throng of people on deck and following proper evacuation procedures, when conducted, is the best policy.
But when those procedures aren’t followed, your stateroom is the most dangerous place to be, as we see here.
Edited for clarity.
This is exactly why you don't want leftists teaching your children. All they ever learn is to believe whatever they are told and follow the herd.
I wish they had named the teachers that forced the kids to stay in their cabins. They directly caused the deaths of the majority of the students. Sure some teachers helped. But some caused their deaths. Yeah those teachers died too but I don't think that should be overlooked.
@@WhitneyDahlin I’m sure they didn’t know what to do either. Those teachers probably thought they were doing the right thing based on the instructions they heard.
Hearing your voice shake broke my heart. I could tell you were on the verge of tears. Thank you for being so respectful in your story telling.
As an American, I remember this story. There was a small outage about this(here). No where near enough but a noticeable amount. People (in America) were angry at our government for not finding a way to intervene. The ship was RIGHT THERE and the Navy ship just watched. Though reports from the Navy said the soldiers were begging to do something. The higher ups said their hands were tied because intervening could start a war. It just didn't feel like enough.
The fact that those children were abandoned because of the politicians wanting to "save face". So heartbreaking hearing the children tell their parents they love them.

Can you imagine a child who had an older sibling or cousin who'd previously taken this trip? And told them how much fun they'd had and what an experience it'd been. The anticipation and excitement of a 15 or 16 year old young person yearning for excitement and experience and a little freedom from home and schoolwork and their parents. Probably from the older sibling who'd maybe teased or talked up the trip. For some of the kids it was probably one of the most exciting deals they'd had to that point. How terribly, terribly sad. And they were let down and subsequently abandoned. It's an absolute outrage!
The sacrifices of innocent women, men and children for the pride of a few politicians is the craziest thing on earth to me
Right?? And how on earth did they think this would be the better outcome rather then sucking up their pride, admit their mistakes and let other people help them? They must’ve figured a tragedy like this would be the outcome, and that they wouldn’t be able to keep this many deaths a “secret”??? I just don’t understand

Pride takes many lives. Their pride allowed these kids to die slowly and horrifically. It’s heart breaking. The rippling effect just as heartbreaking as well. I’m shocked at the details. I can’t help but cry for those children.
this level of negligence is honestly SICKENING I can't even begin to imagine the feelings of the parents. The sheer and utter disrespect of the government and that terrible "captain" is enraging. Absolutely disgusting behavior.
The fact that the captain just left the ship DISGUISED AS A PASSENGER knowing he is killing so many students with such a bright future right there and then is SO DISGUSTING. This has to be a joke. The government even tried hiding it. Disgusting. My deepest condolences to the passengers on the cruise and the families that had to go through the loss of their children.
Thank you for the terrible, sad truth.Ten years later, and we can still mourn those wonderful kids, and the dead heroes, and keep their families in our prayers.
It sucks but it'll keep happening until we bring the system down.
What system? This happened by avoiding the system
And WHAT exactly has he been trying to achieve? Life in prison or capital punishment? Such a behaviour, out of an old man, seems to be quite retarded!
@@debrahanes4439I'mma say it happened because bad people are the most powerful, good people get taken advantage of, the system will always be flawed as long as bad people can use it. They people will support other bad people when it is convenient, it doesn't matter what is lost as long as they keep their power. They were dirty climbing their way up the latter and stay filthy to keep their spot.
I keep choking back tears, but when the civilian said “ if I had saved everyone, then I would’ve felt proud of myself” had me. Omg this is horrific and so sad. Bless all those who actually helped those students.
Truely it's literally horrific
I don’t usually cry for these sad stories but this one actually got me especially since so many young compassionate ppl died but the older crew were selfish and survived

The worst part of this tragedy is that they could've been saved, the fact that pride, and cowardliness had killed 350 students is both devastating and disgusting.
A fisherman managed to save 25 people all by himself. Yet the coast gaurds and army, and marines didnt save a single person except the coward captain and his 6 crew members. This story is so traumatizing and heartbreaking. I cried listening to this video. The goverment is a complete failure. These poor children and their families. RIP 😔

I had goosebumps all over my body listening to this
I wish there were 20 fishermen, then x 25 = 500 saved all. The heart saves lives. Ego and greed kills, indeed.
Win fisher men 👏
He committed because he couldn’t bare the fact that he couldn’t save more students from that ferry he heard their cries every night and their pleads for help
Having a trip THAT unorganized and unsafe, while knowing there were KIDS on board screams murder to me

I actually started crying when hearing about the 6 year old girl. I have a younger brother and the thought of him going through something like that broke me. Not to mention how the 7 year old and the parents didn’t make it. Those were young children who were left to die by the authorities, people they are taught to trust, and instead had to take matters into their own hands
This tragedy infuriates me because it was 100% PREVENTABLE. Not 5%, not 70% not 99.9998%, 100%. These families were ruined and destroyed because of willful incompetence and selfishness. Stephanie, you always do these stories, however tragic, such justice especially for the victims😊
same here
Agreed 110%. Devastating and infuriating.
Yeap. They just needed to rush everyone outside, give info about amount of passengers and estimated time of sinking. Government asking USA marines for help. I'm sure there would be victims still, but not in hundreds...
I ❤ watching her videos. This was the 1st video she made 2 make me cry. What made me bust in2 tears was when she translated the lyrics 2 BTS’s Spring Day song. 😢😢😢😢😢
It was preventable in multiple ways. Before it started and after. That’s what’s hurts
As a Navy sailor, I can say with full confidence that every single person would have survived had the offer been accepted. Especially with the number of Marines on board and the number of rescue swimmers that every Navy vessel is required to have. Since there were Marines on board I figure it was an aircraft carrier, which also has 2 rescue boats on board ready to be deployed at all times. This catastrophe was ENTIRELY avoidable
There were more than 2 marines for every passenger. The casualties would have been single or max double digits, only people drowned because they were stuck somewhere with no air. This is one of the most insane cases ever. Titanic as nothing on this
Exactly!!! As soon as she said the declined the marines I was livid!!!! Those kids would still be alive. I’m not to the end yet but I really hope the captain and whoever else on the crew went to jail this was criminal.
My jaw dropped when I learned they declined help from the US. The US Navy is considered one of the finest and most skilled in the world. I can't believe they said no.
@@GH23d7sL45It's still much better than no help at all. Plus, there was a japanese ship nearby too.
It’s insane because the US is supposed to be south koreas BIGGEST ALLY!
If there was ANY military in the world that would save these people, it’s the US!
This is the most abhorrent story of human tragedy, human suffering & capacity for evil I have ever heard in my 43 years on this earth. It is incomprehensible.
this was negligence, this was egoism, this was murder, I think no one in this world can believe that so many people let so much students live, they had a life to live and lack of organization and negligence deprived them to. It's an horrible tragedy, I can't imagine what families and friends of the victims felt.
This wasn’t ineptitude, this was criminal.
The one that gets to me is the kid telling his parents to never let his younger brother go on a school trip and end up like him. That boy will always remember that his older brother’s last thoughts were looking out for him.
it was actually a little sister in the translation of the 20 minute long video but yeah his point still remains clear that he does not want his younger sibling to go on a field trip
One thing that chills me to my core is that the kids were around the same age as me when they passed. These kids could’ve finished college, joined the workforce, got married, created families, and been well on their way into adulthood by now. So many lives unnecessarily robbed. It just breaks my heart.
A literal history changing amount of people died it’s devastating
Same here
My blood boils thinking of the ones calling the shots not doing shit.
The ripple effect of not only the families of the victims being severely affected by this tragedy, but also the people who tried to help. Like hundreds if not thousands of people had their lives changed drastically due to the guilt, heartbreak and trauma from this tragedy. 💔
"Created families?"
so that more people would suffer and die yeah let's just promote Pronatalistsm more so that way more bodies will keep piling up!
The way you tell these stories has me on the edge of tears. You're an excellent story teller.
I have never cried so much so much in my life, may those children and adults who tried to save the students rest in peace.
The kids joking about it being the titanic struck me. You can sometimes get sort of detached when hearing stories like this, but those comments and jokes makes you realize how relatable and heartbreakingly human this was. And then to officers eating ramen. No words can explain the hatred I feel towards the captain and those officers
Exactly. I can’t imagine the amount of jokes made to calm their anxiety and fear. It’s awful.
It’s heartbreaking. They had the chance to save more people. But they ran away from the responsibilities of their jobs. Cowards.

That boy giving up his chance to say goodbye to his parents in order to give as much information as he could to emergency services is so heartbreaking

"Crew goes out last" made me tear up at work. How selfish were the cowards that jumped ship first. May they know the terrors they put the passengers through.
That's why they should all be getting the death penalty. They should not have sacrificed all of those children to save themselves.
I wouldn’t care if the cowards left first but at least tell the passengers to get out of their rooms!! Turn off the announcement!!

@@davidbaires-miranda5860 thank you, yes. The divers too. I hadn't finished the video yet.
Especially because those people weren't trained to do this. While the firefighters who were lost on 9/11 obviously didn't deserve to die, or be traumatized for those who survived, there is an expectation with the job that you will risk your life. They knew that. But these teachers and students were just going on a trip. The crew who didn't flee were just doing a routine job on a cargo ship. They shouldn't have even had to consider the idea of dying, and yet they gave so many more sacrifices because nobody got it together to save them, and they had to give their lives to save just the few peers who managed to escape.
...not quite. But ok. 😂

As an architecture and design student, the twin towers didn't fall because of the plane like everyone thinks. There are many videos that say the say the tower just sunk means there was weak points on the foundation and it crumbled like a demolished building. There are talks that say the government planning this years ago and placed bombs in the basement of the tower.
The idea of all these parents grabbing blankets so their kids wouldn’t be cold when they saw them makes me cry. It breaks my heart knowing that those kids never got those blankets.
That part also made me cry. So incredibly hard to watch
it was also used to cover themselves because the survivors said they didnt want people to take pictures of them after a very traumatic event

I think they didn't want to owe anything to the other countries too but I don't know really
Wait the us navy and who else ?
It’s common for countries to refuse help in times of disaster in order to not seem like they don’t have it together. The USA has done the same. At first the USA refused help after Hurricane Katrina. But days later when all hell broke lose the govt had no choice. They even allowed the Mexican Marines to enter the country in a caravan of trucks to feed people. Since the Mexican and USA war that the Mexican army hadn’t touched foot on American land.
I started bawling hearing about the little girl who was saved but lost her brother and parents. She had a beautiful family and ended up an orphan even without a sibling.
I felt this same way the other day reading an article from a flash flood in Pennsylvania were a mom, grandma, toddler and infant got swept away. The grandma was found and survived. The husband and an older child managed to survive. But they've found the bodies of the toddler and the mom. They haven't found the infant yet, but I'm not holding my breath on that.
