I've noticed that a lot of survivors of these tragic events (e.g. school sh00tings) often go into the medical field to help others and ensure that they don't go through what they did. They didn't have to do that. It's extremely commendable
Trauma changes people. Knowing the right thing to do comes easy for ✨ some ✨. Of course it helps to have a conscience, it must be hard for people who want to hurt others to feel empathy for other humans.
my dad died when i was very young and the years prior he was very distant due to severe mental health problems. i used to want to be a therapist to help people like my dad but it's simply too close to home for me and it would be too triggering. so the fact these people have the strength to confront themselves with their trauma every day is so incredibly strong to me

Yes, but its also beautiful. It's much better to take something out of a tragedy and turning it into something good then dwelling on what could have been. My cousin passed away on his way home from school late at night as he was hit with a car. He was a bright guy and was doing amazing work in the ROTC. His twin sister went on to join the ROTC and carry on what he couldn't do and wants to join the army after college in his honor just because he couldn't. I watched this just now and I had a talked with my father, he said that in a situation where your life is in danger, no one would think of saving you but yourself. Also, being stickler to the rules might put you in a disadvantage sometimes, they shouldn't have listened.
It's scary to think about that. I imagine what I would do in their position and I would've probably done what the adults were telling me, because as kids we trust our elders to be wiser and to protect us. What happened to those poor kids is so frustrating and tragic😔
I remember following this story as it happened. I remember videos and pictures from the kids’ phones being released. I remember the air pockets being checked and the announcement that no survivors were found. I remember the parents sitting in a gymnasium looking at a screen with descriptions of a child and they could go check if they thought it was theirs. This tragedy hit me so hard. I am so mad and sad and I truly hope the people responsible feel guilty every single day of their lives. They don’t deserve peace after abandoning all those children. 💔
Those coast guard divers either lied or were incompetent. A lot of the times they said “no we couldn’t find anyone, including bodies”, only later to be proven to be liars when civilians divers found bodies in the exact places the coast guard claimed to have looked… Useless govt at the time. A rescuer risked his life to save those children. But he couldn't save them all. He committed suicide because he always hear those students' cries and screams needing help whenever he saves another student. REST IN PEACE.
Ko Chang-Suk was a teacher who put his students lives before his own. i'm tired of seeing comments like: "the kids should've ignored the captain and just escape" "many of them would have survived if they didn't listen to the captain" "i would've just jumped" it's easy to say that because you weren't there. i bet only very few of you would actually jumped. consider this: - they are high school students - they have no exact idea of what was happening, the current condition of the ship, how fast it's sinking, they only know that it's tilting badly - none of them have the proper knowledge on what to do in that situation - the sea is cold and the weather is quite bad - can't escape through windows because of the water pressure those factors are the reason why they listened to the captain. obviously, they thought the captain knew what's best and what they should do to increase the rate of survival. they thought the captain was doing something to rescue them but in reality, they were being abandoned. even if there were students who ignored the captain and jumped to the sea way earlier, it's unlikely they could've survived hypotermia. blame the selfish captain and the crew who abandoned them. blame the authorities that rejected the help offer from US and Japan who were nearby. blame the government who didn't send help immediately, the students were rescued by nearby fishermen and the divers were civilian volunteers. do not ever, "blame" the students for listening to the captain.
@@Lee_Juyeon yes and even the civilian divers whos trying to rescue possible life//redeem the bodies of the deads were stopped by the authorities. I think it’s fair to comment on cultural differences that played a role in students listening to authority figures in Korea. There is zero chance as a high school kid that I’m hanging out in the bottom of a ship that is titling. In the US, we learn to challenge authority, critical think and make decisions at a young age. No one is blaming the kids.
I agree completely. I was 25 on my first cruise/ferry and the boat is so huge that, depending on where you are, you have no idea what’s happening to the boat from the outside. I’m sure if the kids had a bird’s eye view of the ship, they’d have tried to escape sooner, but when you’re in one room of a huge vessel and told that rescuers are coming, it makes sense that the kids would wait for them, then try to escape once water hits their level (which would likely be too late to be able to navigate the boat while it’s already submerged in the darkness of the ocean). I’m sure lots of them made it to stairways or the larger open halls/rooms of the ferry but when the whole thing is sideways, how are they supposed to navigate? I could never put blame on the poor children for “not attempting to escape”. I’m positive they did but the reason why it seems like they didn’t try was because none of them survived their attempt.
@@tidi4898 I'm talking about cultural differences of 2 countries: US vs Korea. Are you from either? I'm from both. Born in Korea and raised in the states. Why do people feel like they are experts in other countries? It's very odd. Let me get this clear: we aren't raised to respect authority in the US. We are bombarded with challenging the norms and doing stupid stuff. These are the things we did in before 9th grade: cut school, roamed mountains without parents, vandalism for fun, smoked cigs, drank alcohol, tried weed, egged houses, threw snowballs at cars, sneak out at night when staying over a friends house (and this is the stuff I remember). And we grew up in the suburbs of an East coast city and were in the top 20% of our class grade wise. In Korea, no one does this kind of stuff unless you are a troubled kid. Its just not part of their norms to challenge authority blatantly. ( Oh yeah, I've actually taken a ferry from Incheon port.)
I was living in Seoul at the time and remember dreading waking up to the news. Watching that death toll count go up was absolutely heartbreaking and the incompetence of the government was infuriating.
A body was found on April 22, 2014, it was discovered that he and his girlfriend, had tied their wrists together with strings. The diver who found their bodies was moved to tears. The knowledge that these two 16-year-olds, when faced with the realities of their deaths, had taken steps to ensure that they weren't separated even as they died, was overwhelming.

The parents of the deceased had their hearts broken twice that day. Once when they heard about the accident and worried about their kids. But then they were told everyone was safe and felt relief. Then again, when they realised they had been lied to and their child is likely dead.
third time to find out that their children could have survived but didn't due to corruption (the boat was overweight but authorities were bribed and ignored it, US offered help but was refused due to korean governemnt trying to keep it downlow, the president was missing during the period to give any commands, the ship was slowly sinking but they pumped air to sink it faster to cover their tracks)
only now i knew about this in detail, this is the most bizarre accident that ever happened. The students told to stay put, the captain fleeing, the cost guard not helping, the cover up. Poor souls.
I dont really remember but many people think its sacrifice for a cult, so this ship company is owned by rich people which is father of wife JYP. The father is the leader of cult. Former president said shes missing when this happen apparently shes doing cult. Thats why investigation not done properly because of the president
@No Name erm I don't think any of the cult stuff is linked to jyp, but I do remember hearing mentions about how a cult was linked to the people incharge (as in the people who built it etc, like it's company) of the boat. The theory certainly did not mention anything about jyp, but something about a runaway criminal or a very dangerous criminal who had been incharge of either the company or the cult, I can't remember exactly...
I still remember a video from a girl inside the ship joking and saying "let's all meet up when we get out of here"... It's so heartbreaking.. Never forget these angels.. Died bc they followed instructions... How selfish was the captain... 😭
Because society ingraved in our brains the saying "Always respect, listen, and obey your elders" and that's why they stayed there and just put their trust in their elders and keeps telling themselves to stay put and help will arrive soon but really, they're just being made sacrificial lambs and thought as dead weight. The crew probably thought to tell them to evacuate yet fear came over them as how the ship is so tilted and they just left.

All of the crew, especially the captain are uneducated and untrained! I bet their were no safety orientations given to the passengers after embarkation. In an emergency situation, all crew should have led the passengers to the muster stations and usher the passengers' embarkation on the lifeboats and liferafts. AFTER DONNING THE LIFE JACKETS, THEY COULD HAVE WENT TO THE MUSTER STATION AND COULD HAVE BEEN ALL SAVED IF THE CREW WERE TRAINED!

The worst part is when they escaped the boat was barely sinking. They had plenty of time to get everyone off the boat! The captain and crew escapes and waited for the boat to sink. Also they refused help from a US navy ship AND the Japanese coast guard! And because of that refusal of help both the US and Japan had to just watch this tragedy happen as well. Not only did they turn the help away from US and Japanese ships who were close by and ready to help who could've saved all the children but they also hindered the VOLUNTARY divers from retrieving more bodies, making up excuses that they can't dive even though the divers had seen that some of the children were still alive and at the windows and wanted to dive back down to help them :(
Do y'all remember the video of the girls surviving a few days in the sunken ship and even sending signals that they were alive but nobody rescued them? This was on purpose. They killed them and it is so heartbreaking and till this day it makes me furious. They took away their lives, their future.
What video is this? So the girl survived inside the Sewol for a few day? I've seen a lot of video regarding Sewol Ferry but I don't think I've ever seen this one

BluePeach 0214 Apparently a girl was surging in an air bubble for days after the accident and said she was alive on Facebook. Her parents saw but authorities simply insisted it was an imposer.
One of the things about this tragedy that breaks my heart and still gives me nightmares when I think of it is this: there were air pockets in the sunken ferry as it layed on the sea floor. Students were alive in those air pockets waiting for help. I've seen some say they lived up to 5 days after it sank. One womans daughter had changed clothes and they had sent messages via Facebook saying they were still alive, please help. One students body, once retrieved you could tell the upper body had not been submerged. Like the student was standing in water inside an air pocket. The government wants you to think it's not true. It is! The guy with the diving bell who was willing to go down and rescue any people still alive and retrieve bodies was turned away and also had his hydraulic lines cut on his bell. Its absolutely horrible to think about.
@@user-id8ih yes, sadly, and also the Captain and staff of the ferry that were cowards and fled instead of staying behind to help the passengers however they could. A true Captain goes down with his ship, he doesn't survive while his passengers die.

The fact that these students were only teenagers breaks my heart. They had so much to live for but all that was stripped away by incompetent crew members of the ship. I wonder how these people sleep at night knowing that they caused the death of so many students .
What I know about this accident is that they were held by an order. "Do not move , the rescuers are coming" After 10 minutes no rescuers came. A student filmed everything. They were all joking and laughing around in the video. It's sad to see young lives joking about their death. They could have been adults now. Plus the fact that the person in charge of the rescue lied about the situation. He said that something about the situation being completely solved. That everyone was saved but in reality everyone is sitting their butts on that sinking ship. Parents hoped that their children were safe.. they thought everyone was alive. I can't forget the cries of the parents when they saw the bodies of their children. No one is immune to the cries. It's heart breaking. Many of the survivors of this tragedy didn't get the chance to live their lives normally. And one of the rescuers committed suicide after that accident. His family said that he always hear the cries of the children. They're screaming for help.
Alfredo orfanel BTS BLACKPINK fanboy. Sorry but... I’m guessing most of the people who died followed the rules, they stayed where they were and did nothing.
i totally agree with you, even in the last moment they hoped for the instruction of help to come through. they are being kept and instructed to stay in their room, and most of them not knowing the whole situation out there which is the boat is really sinking, i can remember clearly how these students film theirselves happily and even joking of telling their parents their last message. they aren't aware of the whole situation, and most part of it all, the help that they hoped for didn't come as they wished expected, also as far as i know the first boat that ever attempted to rescue is a fisherman's boat not a rescue boat, rescues came after when all was too late.
It’s almost like it was planned. No way the government wouldn’t have saved the the passengers unless there was a underlying reason. Any other country would’ve helped. I seriously doubt that after all these calls and distress signals that the Korean government chose to ignore it for no purpose

The disaster was a tragedy and could have been averted. Sadly the captain and the crew didn't even think about saving the passengers. But because of such tragedies, good changes often occur, such as new maritime rules are created to prevent something like this happening again.
What's is more sad is even with the captain and crew fuck ups, they could still be saved, but the incompetence of the government right then with political agenda, forbid the americans and japanese who have specialized equipment and manpower at the ready and requested permission to help, but denied, it took 2 days before even the government tried to act, what kind of fucking shit is that.
@@gustlightfall I am just too angry at this and if it is planned whoever did it I think must be someone with power and money. It's obvious that the captain and crew said nothing and tried to get away it looks like they were silenced with something and I think the president of s. Korea is involved in it. Like why does the rescue team take days when other countries offered help? They denied the request as well. This must be connected to something.
The thing is that this tragedy should not happen in the first place as this is not the first time it happen. Titanic was the first to major change maritime law for lifeboats and in 1987, MS Herald of Free Enterprise capsized make way for law on operating for ferry ship. Thus some ship tragedies is well known in the past and already prevent another but greed, corruption and ignorant can't prevent that fateful day.
Worst part of this is that those students knew that they won't make it out alive but instead of being sad they wished happy life to people they love. They said 5 are missing. Imagine being a parent, learned your child mostly died and you don't even have the opportunity to get the body to have a respectful goodbye to the one. Imagine being a survivor and then watching the people who are drowning, your friends or not from the news. The captain deserves nothing in this world, absolutely nothing (in term of happiness and good. he can live the rest of his live thinking of all the screaming children he had left behind). He let young, innocent children to die. The government can go in hell, they had help from USA and Japan, yet the said they had anything under control when they were probably having a good laugh when children were dying. God bless the volunteers who helped to safe the children and many other people on the boat. How many of them thought there were safe because the captain said everything thing is fine while he escaped but they were lied to and all the hope went away the minute they released this is worse than what they thought it was. Imagine all the trauma the ones who went through this and had to leave with that for the rest of their lives. All the futures that were lost just because some did this for a sacrifice (a strong theory).
Not just the captain.. his crew that left with him, the authorities that refused help from nearby countries that were willing to help, the government/higher ups that neglected them and just tried to cover the incident :-:
It was said that this was all a sacrifice due to some cult that is said even high status people are in, i think the even the president was in it too.. fortunately through the people's voices the pres was taken away from her status and position
Some of the survivors also felt too much guilt and one of the civilian divers faced trauma and even the vice president of the school all committed suicide later...

Some evil villain type of shit. It would have took 2 seconds to make that announcement and half the boat was still above water. It really is disturbing
He straight up murdered them. It would have been better of him to have said nothing at all and let the kids decide for themselves than for him to order them to stay in their cabins to be drowned.
This tragedy is so unbelievably heartbreaking and rage-inducing. It took two hours for that ferry to sink. If ONE person who was a part of that crew, would have told them to get to the upper decks, literally no one would have died. Instead, those kids sat below deck for two hours, waiting for someone, anyone to give them information and save them, all while the ship slowly got darker and darker and the water levels rose. None of them should have died. According to the coroners and investigators, many of the students had broken fingers because they spent their last moments fighting so hard to get out of the ferry. To climb and hit so hard that you break mutliple fingers? Unreal. They fought so hard. I hope every person who failed these children live with guilt for the rest of their lives. I hope they're haunted every day. Those kids deserved to live.
Exactly. These children suffered so much before dying while trying so hard to escape something that a single person saying “head up to the top deck” could have prevented. I can’t even imagine being the families and friends of those people.

They believed that they will be saved. They listened to captain and stayed inside of the cabins. They waited for instructions when no one was there to give them instructions and they didn't knew that. They asked if the teachers were okay. They joked there laugh there (for sometime) believing that they're gonna walk again on ground untill they experienced the water filling inside of the cabins, they're holding eachother tightly hugging eachother and crying and screaming, when they can't breathe anymore, they are remembering everything they left on home or left to do, remembering their loving ones suddenly when they can't hold their breath anymore and everything went black. REST IN PEACE
I’m not even a South Korean, but this tragic incident will forever pain my heart. I cannot even begin to imagine how the victims must have felt when they realised the help they were waiting for all along was never going to arrive. The pain and sorrow their loved ones will carry for the rest of their lives, knowing the cruel fact that their children were brutally left to die in the sinking ship. The guilt they are not responsible for but will carry, for telling their loved ones to obey instructions for their safety. I’m not sure about this, but I read that there was a recent re-investigation into the case, and I hope it finally brings the truth to light, and finally give closure to all that need it to move on. I don’t want to wish evil on anybody, but I sincerely wish that those responsible for these children’s deaths are prosecuted, and may they rot in hell, and even then, it will never be enough compensation. I am not religious, but I pray and hope that these students are in a better place, and they can rest in peace, somehow. Lastly, though it will literally not make any difference, I will make it a point to visit the memorial site when I’m in Korea one day, and let them know that I’m just one of the many who will remember their lives. 🕯🙏
Me too. I'm not South Korean, but I would definitely visit the memorial. This sad story brought tears to my eyes..... I can't believe the captain. I hope he ends up in Hell. But like you said, even then, it's not enough and it's not going to bring the hundreds of lost and missing lives back.

Respect too all the families for tragic loss lost in this awful sinking. RIP. But also respect to all the rescuers who also died but never get mentioned. RIP.
It's extremely sad to know that even after the ship has sunken, the government still refused and tried delaying the rescue of the students for days when some of them are still alive in the air pockets. They manipulated the news shown to the public that they are trying all ways when they actually did absolutely nothing apart from deterring volunteered helps. Something is so very wrong.
Actually, there is another RUclips channel that did a documentary on the sinking and 1 of the civilian divers who volunteered to dive and rescue people said there was no air pockets. Later during the trial someone familiar with how the ferry was designed said it wasn't designed to leave air pockets once it sinks. Someone testified/admitted at the trial that the authorities only claimed there were air pockets and spoke of a "rescue" operation to make things look good for the media. Another lie the authorities told was that they were sending down a hose to pump air into the ship. But the guy who was in charge of that said when they sent the hose down they could not find a window or open orafice on the ferry to put in so the end of the hose just laid on the outside of the ferry releasing the air/oxygen into the open sea. That documentary interviewed 2 of the few divers who volunteered to help "rescue" students after the ferry had completely sunk. Sadly, one of those 2 divers interviewed committed suicide I believe before the film was released. He only retrieved dead bodies from the ferry; no one was alive. His family said the images of the dead students underwater haunted him.
@@femmebrulee5053 Thank you for your sharing, which brought me thinking of some questions. I'm wondering whether the person who testified the design of the ship was being manipulated by anyone. Regarding the one diver who mentioned there wasn't any air pocket, was it at the early stage when the ship sank that he found that out or later stage, ie many days or weeks later. It will be quite impossible for just one diver to determine that for all the cabins. On the other hand, if there are air pockets, they will be eventually leak away slowly? I hate it when they disregard helps, eg the diving bell. Whether or not there was any air pocket, a tiniest hope is still a hope. They should have tried everything possible but instead the diver was being rejected time and again, and having his operation sabotaged.
The truth was that that ship was made a certain way where there would be NO air pockets and the government after viewing the layout on that first day KNEW this and did not tell parents or public.
@@zariballard I read about that, but have been wondering whether that truth is really the truth. Other experts also did mention there are possibility of air pockets.
One of my bestfriends brothers lost his girlfriend in the disaster. She was his first love and he still blames himself for her death. It completely shattered me when he told me i'm really similar to the kind of person she was
The reason this hits me so hard is because the tragedy was completely preventable. The ship was sinking really slowly, if the stupid captain had atleast let the children evacuate instead of lying and telling them to stay put they could’ve survived. If he and the crew wanted to be selfish they could’ve atleast gotten their own lifeboats but still TOLD the students what was happening. They could’ve atleast been decent enough to let them know what was going on. Heartbreaking.
Yes. I'm in the U.S. and I remember when it came across the news as a ferry accident. I went to sleep and woke up and he news said it's still sinking. The authorities had plenty of time to help everyone off but they failed. I can't imagine living, knowing my family member died just because the authorities did nothing. When a boat is sinking with that many people and cars on board you need to immediately start getting everyone off because the weight of all the passengers and cargo will cause it to sink quicker. Like I'm confused as to what those in charge thought was going to happen? I listened to the communications among the top officials and it just sounded insane. They were worried about getting the wording correct on a written notice about the situation instead of taking action. This is what happens when unqualified people are in charge.
Not only that but they actually sunk the ship all the way. It wasn’t completely sunken but the next day when the president at the time was taken out to the scene, they actually sunk the ship the whole way and murdered anyone still alive

(His name is Moon Jae-In) Press is restricted, the market is manipulated by the gov, and the voting system is rigged. Like for real. Millions of people aren't using internet voting systems anymore as they are easier to rig and it's almost certain the gov is rigging them- what kind of democratic country has its people struggling to cast a real vote? go ask some other korean for more info

i'm tired of seeing comments like:
"the kids should've ignored the captain and just escape"
"many of them would have survived if they didn't listen to the captain"
"i would've just jumped"
it's easy to say that because you weren't there. i bet only very few of you would actually jumped.
consider this:
- they are high school students
- they have no exact idea of what was happening, the current condition of the ship, how fast it's sinking, they only know that it's tilting badly
- none of them have the proper knowledge on what to do in that situation
- the sea is cold and the weather is quite bad
- can't escape through windows because of the water pressure
those factors are the reason why they listened to the captain. obviously, they thought the captain knew what's best and what they should do to increase the rate of survival. they thought the captain was doing something to rescue them but in reality, they were being abandoned.
even if there were students who ignored the captain and jumped to the sea way earlier, it's unlikely they could've survived hypotermia.
blame the selfish captain and the crew who abandoned them. blame the authorities that rejected the help offer from US and Japan who were nearby. blame the government who didn't send help immediately, the students were rescued by nearby fishermen and the divers were civilian volunteers. do not ever, "blame" the students for listening to the captain.

One of the things about this tragedy that breaks my heart and still gives me nightmares when I think of it is this: there were air pockets in the sunken ferry as it layed on the sea floor. The disaster was a tragedy and could have been averted. Sadly the captain and the crew didn't even think about saving the passengers. But because of such tragedies, good changes often occur, such as new maritime rules are created to prevent something like this happening again.
But its unfortunate thing that it always requires a disaster to show people that there is a problem and we need to change.

Instead, those kids sat below deck for two hours, waiting for someone, anyone to give them information and save them, all while the ship slowly got darker and darker and the water levels rose.

She has spoken about it nonstop for over 5 years as a speaker, in front the distraught families no less. I believe here she wanted to be collected and speak the truth for the world to understand the injustice. We already know how heartbroken they all are.
She is ALWAYS crying, inside her heart, for *SIX YEARS* . HOW you aren't crying if at april 16, EVERY YEARS, those traumatic event back to haunting you. Those friends who cried for help, & watching with your own eyes your friend slowly die. No more tears out bcz she think she & others need to dealt with this unfair matters with stone-heart. If not, they maybe silenced by some "important people". NO ONE know how deep her scar inside her heart. It will never fully healed.
Respect too all the families for tragic loss lost in this awful sinking. RIP. But also respect to all the rescuers who also died but never get mentioned. RIP.
not me crying about people i don't know, but when i saw the video of them waiting, my heart broke, we will never forget you
rest in peace!
Honestly I’m so heartbroken about it and I’m just finding out about it today.:(
Same I just found out today and I keep crying Everytime I see this
It’s because you have a heart and care for people who had to go through this

@@femmebrulee5053 watch the documentary diving bell on this - there were def air pockets there was a picture of one.
It completely shattered me when he told me i'm really similar to the kind of person she was
im so sorry

Tell him to not say that!! It's the captain's fault. He just left
the notes from family members at the end broke my heart
fly high angels ❤️🩹
Not to mention that the US and Japan both had ships nearby and offered help and were turned away because “it wasn’t necessary”
Not only that but they actually sunk the ship all the way. It wasn’t completely sunken but the next day when the president at the time was taken out to the scene, they actually sunk the ship the whole way and murdered anyone still alive
@@tokioobsessee20 the Government silenced everyone talking about it, not listening to the protests. The captain should suffer the hardest punishment ever, we can’t stand and wait until he gets what he deserves, it’ll kill us. For those who had died, they will never forgive him.
"Once the cold winter passes, it will be spring in Korea once again"
That sent shivers down my spine because that line is actually from one of my favorite songs made about this tragedy
once i found otu about what the song was about, i don't listen to it the same anymore. My prayers go to all the families and may the souls rest in peace. I hope they're in a better place now
when did she say that

I can't imagine the pain and trauma when she felt her friends swept away in the wave..
i literally cried so hard because i absolutely could not imagine how they felt fighting for their life until the last moment and how young these students were, and the impact on their friends and families…
I herd this once "If the ship goes down, so does the Captain." I thought that was like a pledge Captains did. Guess this guy shouldn't call himself a Captain.
he is nothing but a monster
like the titanic captain

Something very similar happened in a fire known as Karamay fire incident at a theatre in China Xinjiang 1994 where 288 young students died together with some teachers because they were told to remain seated to let 20 visiting high ranking communists officials to leave first. The incident was largely covered up for many years. A documentary was later made in secret to give the victims a voice in this event. The documentary can be located in RUclips

The fact that all the students’ family was told that everyone was safely out and then to receive many reports afterwards that it was not the case and many students were still on the boat. I can’t imagine what the families were going through. Absolutely heartbreaking. May their beautiful souls rest in perfect peace🎗💛
why are THEY LYING
It’s now been 9 years since the event and 3 years since this video I hope they continue to Rest In Peace 🥺💛🎗 and then in 2022 another similar tragedy happened so sad
